Dawgs Lose War On 24

    The Dawgs winning streak ended tonight with a 36-28 loss to Silver Lake.  The Eagles got two quick TDs in the first quarter and the Dawgs had to play catchup the rest of the game,  never getting closer than 8 points.   The 8 poin difference was a result of a muffed extra point try and the holder ran the ball in for a 2 point conversion.

Football Stat Leaders

    Jacob Bradshaw is one of the football rushing leaders in the area, averaging 188 yards per game.    He is also among the leaders for passing,  having completed 47 of 66 for 631 yards or 132.8 yards per game.   Cole Schumacher is the Dawgs leading receiver tallying 303 yards on 21 receptions for a 75.9 average thus far this year.

     The RHS volleyball team beat Riley Count on Tue. afternoon  by scores of 25-20, 25-18 and 25-17,  25-23 to up their Mid-East league record to 2-2/

ROSSVILLE — For the fans of Rossville and Silver Lake, the War on 24 showdown can be the game of the year, one that makes or breaks a season.

That’s simply the nature of rivalry games, particularly ones as fierce as this one. And when they enter the game ranked No. 1 and 2 in Class 3A as Rossville (4-0) and Silver Lake (4-0) do, the stakes for the game seem to be even higher.

But for Silver Lake coach C.J. Hamilton and Rossville coach Derick Hammes, Friday’s clash is merely the next game on the schedule, the midway point of the 2016 season. While grasping there’s no way to downplay the build-up for the game, they also know that it can’t become the season-defining contest.

“Any time you play Rossville, it’s going to be what it is,” said Hamilton, the state’s all-time winningest coach with 394 victories. “It’s going to be intense and very emotional. But the thing of it is, both teams have seasons well beyond this game. If you put too much riding on one game, forget about the rest of the season.”

Hammes agreed.

“We honestly try to prepare the same way week in and week out no matter who we’re facing,” Hammes said. “Obviously the fact this is such a big rivalry, you get a good week of practice out of your kids. If you emphasize one game over any other, then I don’t think you have the consistency we have.

“The Silver Lake game is not just another game, but in terms of how we get ready for it, it really is. What we do in preparation is respect everybody we play and get ready to do what we need to do to win that game.”

Rossville enters Friday’s showdown riding a rare three-game winning streak in the series. The Bulldawgs swept the Eagles on their way to the Class 3A state title in 2014 and last year rode a herculean effort from All-State quarterback Tucker Horak (384 yards rushing 7 TDs) to a 56-35 victory, which clinched a third straight Mid-East League title for Rossville.

Lost in Horak’s gaudy stats and the final outcome was the fact that for much of the game, Silver Lake answered every Rossville blow with one of its own. The Eagles actually led 17-14 late in the second quarter and trailed just 35-29 late in the third quarter before Horak delivered three unanswered touchdowns to put the Eagles away.

“It was back and forth through the first half and the final score wasn’t an indication of how close the game was,” Hammes said. “It was another one of the great games in the series and we expect it to be that way again this year.”

Silver Lake’s Dalton Dultmeier threw for 299 yards in the loss and has enjoyed a big start to the 2016 season, throwing for 648 yards and six touchdowns in the Eagles’ 4-0 start. The senior has spread the ball nicely with four different Eagles having at least 116 yards receiving with Wyatt Heiman’s 13 catches for 342 yards leading the way.

Perhaps the biggest key is the ground game the Eagles have developed around Dultmeier, who has also run for 272 yards. Mason Jones, who started at guard last year, has made the transition to the backfield well and has 298 yards and five touchdowns, coming off a breakout game against Rock Creek where he ran for 117 yards and three scores.

“He and Garrett Huske both have done a nice job,” Hamilton said. “He’s made the transition really well and both backs have contributed maybe a little bit beyond expectations. We like to be balanced and they complement each other.”

Last week’s 49-26 win over Rock Creek was Silver Lake’s closest call of the season, one in which the Eagles have outscored their foes 202-42. Silver Lake trailed early but exploded for 29 second-quarter points and overcame a sloppy second half.

Despite the apparent ease in which the Eagles have moved to 4-0, Hamilton said his team has been tested and knows the ultimate test, thus far, will come Friday.

“I felt like teams played pretty well against us, so I think we’ve been tested,” he said. “We got behind against Rock Creek and you never know how you’ll respond, even though it was in the first half. But you just never know so that was a good sign. (Friday)’s a good opportunity for us to measure where we’re at.

“It’s always a good opportunity when you’re facing a good team. We’ve got a ways to go and I’m sure they’ve got a ways to go and this prepares us for that.”

Rossville, meanwhile, has faced plenty of adversity in its 4-0 start, one that’s extended its state-best winning streak to 32 consecutive wins. The Bulldawgs had to make a defensive stand in the final seconds of the opener to fight off Marysville 27-20 and then fell behind 14-0 after one quarter the following week against Rock Creek before rallying for a 41-26 victory keyed by a 20-0 edge in the third quarter.

Last week, the Bulldawgs fought off a tough challenge from Wabaunsee in a 28-6 win — their third straight game without the services of standout linebacker-running back Dawson Hammes and senior lineman Jackson Reeves. Both players are questionable for Friday’s game with Hammes suffering a fracture in his left thumb which required surgery.

What hasn’t killed the Bulldawgs has made them stronger, Derick Hammes said.

“It helps and that was certainly one of the question marks about us at the beginning of the year — how would we respond to adversity and react when we’re in a tough situation?” Hammes said. “We’ve certainly had that in several games to this point in the season and our leadership has responded well and our play has been good enough when it had to be.”

Jacob Bradshaw has been spectacular in filling Horak’s void at quarterback. The senior has run for 752 yards and nine touchdowns and thrown for 531 yards and nine scores. Cole Schumacher has 21 catches for 303 yards and eight touchdowns.

Cole Schumacher Is Scholar Athlete of the Week

 (WIBW) -- Rossville senior wide receiver Cole Schumacher is this week's Scholar Athlete of the Week.

Schumacher is leading the defending 3A  state champions to a 4-0 record this year. Last week he caught three touchdowns in the first half.

Along with football, Schumacher plays basketball and is a power-lifter. He was honorable mention all-state in basketball last year, and finished third in the state in hang clean.

Schumacher has a 3.8 GPA and is a Homecoming King candidate this year.

He's also a volunteer at Habitat for Humanity and Harvesters International.

Schumacher hopes to attend Emporia State University next year and plans to major in kinesiology.

The #1 ranked Dawgs put their unbeaten streak on the line Friday night against the #2 ranked Silver Lake Eagles.   The game is slate for a 7:00 PM kick-off on the Rossville field.

Doris Fairbanks Passes Away

IN LOVING MEMORY

DORIS PEARL FAIRBANKS

Beloved Mother, Grandmother, Sister

June 3, 1927-September 15, 2016

On September 15, 2016, after a brief illness, Doris passed away at home in Rossville, Kansas. She died peacefully and she was surrounded by her loving family and her loyal pets.

Doris was born on June 3, 1927, in Roswell, New Mexico to Henry and Osie White (nee, Stephens). She was one of fourteen children. Doris married Richard Norris and they moved to Northern California in 1946. Employment opportunities led them to relocate to Southern California. Doris worked as a Certified Nurse’s Aide for over a decade. That marriage ended in divorce.

In 1974 Doris moved to Emmet, Kansas and married Joseph Fairbanks. Together they bought a home in Rossville. Doris and Joe traveled throughout the country and enjoyed their retirement years together. Joe preceded her in death

Doris loved music, especially country western. She played the Violin, Mandolin and guitar. In 1980 she joined two friends and formed a Trio that were billed as “Old Time Fiddlers, Pickers and Singers.” Doris also loved gardening, maintaining her home and the serenity of her small community. A typical day ended with her in a recliner, with popcorn, Pepsi and her dogs, Tatum and Tuffy in her lap. It wouldn’t be complete without her watching a western television program. Life was good!

Doris was preceded in death by three sons: Wendell, Ray and Chuck Norris. Doris was also preceded in death by ten siblings Brothers: Carl, Liniol, Johnny and Henry Jr. Sisters: Versa lee, Ester, Kittie, Ruth, Betty and Helen.

Survivors include, her son, Richard Norris (Carol), Arkansas, and daughter, Margaret Norris of the home. She is also survived by her brother, Dale, Roswell, New Mexico; sisters, Margaret Jo Garrett (Bob), Crescent City, CA. and Betty Jean (Cecil) Gumm, of Titusville, FL.

Doris donated her body to The University of Kansas for the advancement of medical science. A graveside service will be held at a later date, not yet determined. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Humane Society.

Doris loved her country, family and her pets. She was humble, loving and kind. She will be missed, especially, by those who called her Mother.

Darrell Carr Passes Away

    Darrell E. Carr Darrell E. Carr, 88, of Topeka, died September 18, 2016 at McCRite Plaza.
    He was born in Butler County, Kansas on January 18, 1928, the son of William and Mary (Woodburn) Carr. Darrell married Mary L. Burns in Mayetta, Kansas on September 1, 1956, she survives. Darrell was in the Army during the Korean Conflict. After returning from the Army he graduated from Wichita State University with a degree in Education. He worked in credit collection for the ARMCO Steel Corporation in Topeka until 1973 and also in Middletown, Ohio from 1973 to 1990. Darrell previously taught and coached at Circleville. After retirement he worked as a Substitute Teacher for Seaman District from 1990 to 2008. He loved watching sports, square dancing, vegetable gardening, watching his grandchildren and spending time with his family. Darrell was a member of the American Legion and St. Matthew Catholic Church.
    He is survived by his children, Bradley Brad (Mattie) Carr, Topeka, William Bill (Greda) Carr, Aberdeen, South Dakota, Julie (Michael) Dimeo, Issaquah, Washington, Catherine (Richard) Wieder, Chesterfield, Missouri, three grandchildren, Sarah Wieder, Denver, Colorado, Rob Wieder, Tampa, Florida, Dan Wieder, Chesterfield, Missouri, one great grandson Troy Chalcraft, Washington. Darrell was preceded in death by his six siblings Dale, Virginia, Polly, Paul, Jack and Elton and also a grandson Ben Dimeo.
    Darrell will lie in state after 2:00 pm on Thursday at Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 6:30 8:30 pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 am on Friday at St. Matthew Catholic Church. Interment will follow at the Rossville Cemetery in Rossville, Kansas where graveside services will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to JDRF, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, or to the Rose Hill United Methodist Church. and sent in his memory to the Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home, 800 SW 6th Ave., Topeka, Kansas 66603. Lawrence Triangular Volleyball

The RHS volleyball team competed in the Lawrence Triangular.  They lost to Washburn Rural 18-25 and 14-25.    Against Lawrence,  the Lady Dogs were 14-25 and 15-25 bringing their overall record to 3=4.

West Franklin Inv. Girl's Golf

    The RHS girls golf team won the West Franklin Invitational via the tie-breaker after both Rossville and Council Grove finished with a 229.   The RHS girls placed four in the top 12.  They were Emily Woodcock (55) fourth, Danielle Mason (55) sixth, Jesse Sowers (57) seventh, and Kathleen Schuler (62) twelfth.
