KSNT Preview of Dawgs

ROSSVILLE (KSNT) – It’s tough to top an undefeated season that ends with a state title, but the Rossville football team says winning never gets old.

If the Dawgs want to repeat as state champs they will have to fill the holes of last year’s senior stars Bo Reeves and Woodrow Rezac.

One thing that hasn’t changed for their team, however, is their quarterback: Torrey Horak.

WIBW Article About Bulldawgs FB

ROSSVILLE, Kan. (WIBW) - The Rossville Bulldogs return to the field in 2021 with a massive target on their backs.

They dominated last season, finishing a perfect 13-0 and winners of the 2A state championship.

Eleven starters from that state title winning group are back, headlined by all-state quarterback Torrey Horak.

He put up 55 touchdowns in 2020.

“Obviously that’s always the goal but especially winning it last year,” Horak said. “I think that’s where we’re setting our goals, and we’ve got enough guys. We’ve got plenty of athletes to go around. I think we’ve got a good shot at it again.”

The ‘Dawgs know in order to repeat, they’ll have to fend off everyone’s best effort to beat them.

“The kids have been warned that we will have a target on our back this year and we will get everyone’s best shot,” head coach Derick Hammes said. “So, you know that’s something as a returning state champion that you’ve got to deal with. You’ve got to be ready to deal with that because it’s a reality.”

Rossville kicks off 2021 on the road against the Centralia in our Kansas Prep Zone Game of the Week.

KPZ kicks off Friday night on 13 NEWS at 10:00 p.m.

Video of Torrey and team can be seen at: WIBW Video of Bulldawgs

3. Beloit (5-7)

4. Hoisington (12-1)

5. Nemaha Central (8-3)

6. Garden Plain (9-2)

7. TMP-Marian (7-2)

8. Osage City (9-2)

9. Pittsburg Colgan (7-3)

10. Kingman (6-3)

By far, War on 24 Rivals Rossville and Silver Lake paced 2A in scoring offense. Rossville led with 52.2 points per game, and Silver Lake was second at 51.1. Outside of those two, only Maur Hill (42.7) scored more than 36.6 points a contest. Rossville and Silver Lake each return elite quarterbacks with Torrey Horak and Daigan Kruger, respectively. Horak is the defending 2A Offensive Player of the Year. Beloit has among CIK’s top OL units paced by junior Grady Seyfert. Hoisington has been highly consistent under coach Zach Baird and has not lost a regular season game since Oct. 10, 2018. Legend Robinson is expected to step into the leading RB role, and Cole Gilliland should be among 2A’s top OL/DLs. Osage City paced 2A in scoring defense at nine points a game. While Rossville/SL is the definite East favorite, the West is significantly more wide-open. Kingman was No. 5 in scoring offense and sixth in defense and is a darkhorse contender.

Annual Hog Tournament in 42nd Year

ROSSVILLE, Kan. (WIBW) -In 1980, a softball tournament was started to help fundraise and raise awareness for Muscular Dystrophy, and more than 40 years later, the tradition still continues.

“We are raising money for an excellent case, it Camp Milton in Linwood, Kansas, it’s a camp for kids ages 6 to 17 that suffer from Neuromuscular diseases and so all of the money that we raise at this tournament go to the camp and helps send kids to the camp and they love it,” said Sandy Becker.

Generations of families step up to the plate, hoping they will make a difference in a child’s life when they leave the field.

“It’s just like family, a lot of these teams have been around since the very beginning we are actually on the third generation now,” she said.

Each time they are playing for more than the name on their jerseys.

“Everyone knows how important this is mainly because Mia comes and visits us every year and that brings it home, Mia is a little girl that suffers from a muscular dystrophy disorder and she 9-years-old and we actually met her, she came to the first time we had this tournament, she showed up and our hearts just fell for her she has had some struggles this past year with her illness but she is doing better and we hope she continues to stay healthy,” Becker said.

The reason the players join the tournament is for kids like Mia, and Sunday afternoon, they showed her what an inspiration she is to many.

“The team Brass Rail, Mia is in all of our hearts and special to all of us and they decided to do something special for her so they had their team all autographed a bat with her name on it and it was great,” she said.

Overall, the teams raised over $47,000 and more information on Camp Milton can be found here.

Steven Guyle Is WIBW Hero

Steven Guyle will be honored by Rossville as Marshall of the Tall Corn Festival Parade Aug. 7

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) -Steven Guyle has served his community for nearly 40 years as not only a paramedic for AMR but as well as an assistant fire chief for Shawnee County.

His journey began in 1977 when he noticed emergency medical services were limited in the town of Rossville.

“All we had was fire suppression equipment working auto accident and we weren’t able to help anybody and there was a couple of us that saw a strong need for our community to expand our scope of practice and venture out to the ems world so we became the first responders out of Rossville as well as the fire department,” he said.

This was the first time Rossville had its very own ambulance.

“What stemmed us to bring it to the Rossville community was there was a couple of calls that we have ran, it was fatalities involved and we couldn’t do anything and we didn’t have the training and the equipment and we unfortunately just watched people die and so we knew there was a big need,” Guyle said.

Throughout his career, he says he witnessed anything and everything--including a tragedy that happened in 2007.

“I just finished a call on the interstate for a rollover semi and the call came out for a capsized canoe in the river, and it was down at the reir and all I was able to do was stand by and wait to see if we can have a rescue, there were actually two people that made it through, they did have life jackets on and we got to treat those two individuals but the school teacher did not make it and there was two of them that didn’t make it and there was four people total in that accident,” he said.

After 35 years of giving the Shawnee County community his all, Guyle decided it was time for a new chapter, he retired from both jobs on July 31st

“I have looked at the calendar and seen how many years I have put in and how many years that I may have left, and of course I have family that has suggested that maybe we should spend a little more time together,” he says.

His two sons, who have looked up to their father strive to follow in his footsteps. As both of his sons, Jason and Michael are volunteer firefighters.

“It is a great honor just to know that there is a great devotion to mankind knowing you have someone that sees that you have made a difference in the community and lives of others,” he said.
