Tall Corn Festival Starts Friday
The annual Tall Corn Festival begins this Friday at 6 p.m. The Friday events will all be in the vicinity of the Joe Campbell Stadium or city park with the corn-spitting, tall corn contests, the corn-on-the-cob eating competition, petting zoo, free hot dogs, community challenge volleyball, Cub Scouts car races, a talent show and a junior high dance.
Saturday’s events start with a pancake breakfast and 5K and mile fun runs at 7:30 a.m. and softball tournament at 8 a.m. The T C F parade on Main St. will be at 10 a.m., preceded by a children’s parade at 9:45 a.m.
At 11:30 a.m., Scott Helmer will perform rock, pop and country music. Other events Saturday include a noon barbecue, mini-train rides, silent and live charity auctions, bingo, chicken dinner at 4 p.m. and a beer garden and street dance at 7 p.m. Performers that evening include the Aaron Woods Bands at 7:30 p.m., YouTube musical parody sensations Peterson Farm Brothers at 9:45 p.m. and the Jared Daniels Band at 10 p.m.
Sunday’s schedule includes a community worship service at 8 a.m., with doughnuts and juice provided, and turtle races and garden lawn tractor pull at 1 p.m. in the Rossville City Park. The festival ends with the Splash Bash at the Pool at the Rossville swimming pool.

Clinton Kerwin Passes Away
Clinton E. Kerwin, 86, passed away Saturday, August 3, 2013 at the Rossville Healthcare & Rehab Center.
He was born August 4, 1926 at Delia, the son of Robert E. and Mary A. Hanrahan Kerwin. Clinton graduated from Delia High School with the class of 1944. He lived most of his life in the Delia and Rossville communities.
Clinton worked for the Union Pacific Railroad for over 40 years. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and a past member of Knights of Columbus Council No. 657.
On October 17, 1956 he was united in marriage to Winifred L. Yocum Besta. She preceded him in death on October 1, 2011. He was also preceded in death by his parents, an infant brother, Aloysius, and by brothers Robert and Kenneth. He was preceded in death by a step-son, George “Eddie” Besta and a step-daughter Theresa Marney.
Survivors include a son, Bob (Susan) Kerwin, Topeka; a step-son, Bennie Besta, Rossville; his daughter, Terri Kerwin, Topeka; a step-daughter, Mary C. (Ron) Cowan, Rossville; a brother, Leo (Virginia) Kerwin, Wellsville; 18 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, August 7, 2013 at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Rossville. Interment will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, St. Marys. A rosary will be recited at 6:00 P.M. Tuesday, August 6, 2013 at Piper Funeral Home in St. Marys where the family will receive friends from 6:30 until 8:00. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Harden Hospice or St. Stanislaus Catholic Church and sent in care of the funeral home. Reporter Article on Richard Kelsey
The Topeka Junior Chamber of Commerce has named Richard D. Kelsey of Rossville the outstanding young farmer of the year.
Kelsey, 30 has been farming for eight years. He operates a partnership project of 750 acres, 360 of which is irrigated, and specializes in hybrid seed corn, hybrid milo seed, and certified seed wheat, and uses a deferred feeding system for cattle.
He was graduated from Kansas State College and is a member of the Farm Management Association No. 4 of Northeast Kansas, of which he served as president for one year and secretary for three.

Rattlers Win U19 NBC National
The Rattlers posted wins in the semi and final games of the NBC U19 National Championship tournament in Topeka on Thursday, July 25. In the morning, they sluggd their way to a 10-0 win in just four innings against the Wichita Sluggers. In the afternoon, they defeated defending champion Davy Jones Cardinals 8-0 in just six innings for their fifth win in a row to take the tournament championship.
Team coach Brett Cowdin has decided to retire on this very important winning occasion so that he could "go out while on top."

Rattlers Moving Up In NBC Tournament
The Rossville Rattlers are two wins away from claiming the National Baseball Congress 19U National Championship.
The Rattlers advance to the National Semi-Final game at 11:30 am Thursday morning by beating the Butler County Cubs last night 5-1. Rossville will take on the Wichita Sluggers 18 Blue team who defeated the Wichita Sluggers 17 Blue team last night 8-0.
A win for the Rattlers means they are guaranteed a spot in the National Championship game at 4:15 Thursday afternoon. If the Rattlers lose the semi-final game, they would play in the final game of the Loser Bracket at 2:00 pm. The winner of that game would then advance to the National Championship game at 4:15 pm and would have to win twice in order to claim the Championship.
Kansas State Pitcher Levi MaVorhis will get the start this morning for the Rattlers.

Old St. Stanislaus Church Torn Down
Rossville's Roman Catholic church, St. Stanislaus was torn down July 23. The previous church was built in 1899. It was enlarged a few decades ago has been replaced by a new church to the south of old one.
Opal Noland Passes Away
Opal Mae Noland, age 84, of Rossville, KS formerly of Hoyt, passed away July 22, 2013 at Plaza West Regional Health Center.
She was born November 1, 1928 in Onaga, KS the daughter of John Thomas and Ruth (Summerville) Edman.
Opal attended Onaga High School. She was a homemaker and housewife. She had lived in Jackson County since 1967 and previously lived in Onaga, Manhattan and Topeka. Opal was a former member of the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Mayetta and had recently been attending Midland PACE. She was also a member of Holton Eagle s Auxiliary #1427.
On May 28, 1951 she married Boyd Eugene Noland in Holton. He preceded her in death on February 16, 2003. She was also preceded in death by 3 sisters, Beulah Gatson, Viola Harvey and Golda Dillman and 3 brothers, Donald, Andrew and Elton Edman. Survivors include 3 daughters, Connie Glenn of Topeka, Mary R. Johnson (Patrick) of Rossville and Wilma Chancellor (Lewis) of Holton; 4 sisters, Gladys Schlarman of Topeka, Valerie Brown of Wichita, Florence Ashman of Seneca and Peggy Eisenbarth of Seneca; 1 brother, William Edman of Lawrence; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-granddaughter.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 26, 2013 at the Mercer Funeral Home in Holton. Burial will be in the St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Hoyt. Family will greet friends from 6:00 7:30 p.m. Thursday evening. Memorials may be given to Midland Hospice c/o Mercer Funeral Home P.O. Box 270, Holton, KS 66436. Rattlers Pick Off Midwest Bruins
The Rossville Ratters topped the Midwest Bruins 7-2 in bracket play on Tuesday at Jerry Robertson Field as they continue their quest for the NBC 19-under national championship.
