Mitch Buhler (11) Leads WU to Lop-Sided Win

    Mitch Buhler threw 3 TD passes  and was 16 of 29 for 273 yards  as Washburn U throttled Nebraska-Kearny 58-13 on  Thursday night in the season opener.

Linda (McCoy) (58) Seitz Passes Away

Linda Ann Seitz, 72, of Ottawa, Kansas passed away Thursday, September 5, 2013 at her home.
Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 A.M. Monday, September 9, 2013 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
Rosary will be said at 5:00 P.M. Sunday, September 8, 2013 at Dengel & Son Mortuary, followed by a family and friends visitation at 5:30 P.M.
Interment Highland Cemetery, Ottawa, Kansas.
Linda was born on Sunday, October 13, 1940 in Wamego, Kansas. She was the daughter of Robert and Lura (McNay) McCoy.
She lived in Ottawa since 1968 moving from St. Mary’s, Kansas where she lived since 1959.
She graduated from Rossville High School with the class of 1958.
On April 11, 1959 Linda was united in marriage with Albert Seitz in St. Mary’s, Kansas. He survives of their home.
Other survivors include her three daughters, Sharon Van Horn and husband Gene of Wellsville, Kansas, Ronda Seiwert and husband Paul of St. Mark/Colwich, Kansas, and Brenda Wray and husband John of Ottawa; nine grandchildren, Greg Van Horn, Gary Van Horn and wife Amanda, Amy Strenth and husband Mike, Jordan, Katie and JohnPaul Seiwert, Mark Wray and wife Lacey, Erik and Amanda Wray; two great grandchildren, Dylan and Austin Strenth; sister, Lois Lacock and husband Tom of Rossville, Kansas.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Linda was not only a wife and mother but also worked as an assistant preschool teacher for East Central Vocational Cooperative in the late 70’s and early 1980’s, Franklin County 4-H Leader, and was a realtor for Prestige Real Estate for seventeen years, retiring in 2010.
She was a member of the Sacred Heart Church, Ottawa Women’s Golf Association and treasurer of Friday Night Couples Golf at Ottawa Country Club.

Brook Hartshorn Turns To Real Estate

    Brock Hartshorn has joined  Coldwell Banker Griffith and Blair American Home in Topeka as a real estate salesman.   The Rossville resident has worked in the education field for 12 years, mostly in the area of special education.   His most  recent posts were as a special educator in Baldwin City and St. Marys.

Girls Golf Team Outlook

    The RHS golf team has already started their season under the guidance of coach Greg Marney.  The team is led by senior Sydney Marney and juniors Makayla Crow, Staci Van Druff and Rachel Lord.  Sydney placed in the top five in all but one meet last year with three of those being wins.   She has qualified for state all three of her previous years.  Makayla and Staci also qualified for state last year.

Abernathys Have a Girl

Thomas and Rachelle Abernathy of  Rossville are the proud parents of a new baby  girl born  Sept. 4 at Stormont-Vail.

     The Dawgs put their first football game of the season in the winning column by defeating Chapman 55-14 on the Rossville field on Friday night.

First Cross Country Meet




    The Rossville/ St. Marys (Kaw Valley)  cross country team is off and running for the 2013 season by opening the season at the Mission Valley Invitational. The girls team placed fourth with Medalists Sophie Dalmsaso placing  2nd and Mattie Swisher placing 5th.
    The boy's placed 2
nd as a team and Clayton Rubio placed 2nd and was the lone medalist. Brady Mulligan missed a medal by 1 place with 11th place finish.

RHS Volleyball Outlook

    The RHS volleyball team is coming off a 15-20 record under the tutelege of coach Angie Bittner.  They are led by junior Taylor  Kirk who was honorable mention All-Mid-East League last year with 128 kills and 20 blocks.  She will move from middle to outside hitter spot.  Junior Taylor Brecheisen had 237 assists.    Lauryn  Catron is recovering from  ankle surgery and will miss early part of season.   The team opens this year at the Central Heights Invitational on Sept. 7.  With the team heavy in juniors,  they can be expected to be stronger next year.

Football Team Outlook

    The Dawgs are getting prepared for their Sept 6 opener against Chapman on the home field under the guidance of first year coach Derick Hammes.  Hammes  spent past the last  seven years at Washburn Rural and replaces longtime RHS coach Steve Buhler, who replaced Hammes at Rural.   The Dawgs are coming off an 11-2 season with both losses  to  rival Silver Lake, including a 35-14 loss in state semifinals.
    Last year Nick Reesor ran for 950 yards and 15 TDs.  Dalton Catron had 2400 total yards last year  and  top candidates to replace him  are  senior Zack Nitsch or sophomore Tucker Horak.  Leading receiver from last year is  Thatcher Horak had 9 TD catches.   Nick Reesor was also the leading tackler for the defense as sophomore with 102.   Linebacker Tagen Lambotte is expected to use the strength and moves  he developed as a three-time state wrestling champion.
