Daryl Dannefer Wins Grassland Award

    Daryl Dannefer of Rossville was the recipient of the 2013 Shawnee County Soil Conservation District Grassland Award.

Rattlers Add Four More Players

ROSSVILLE - The Rossville Rattlers would like to announce the signing of four more players for the 2014 season.

 

We'd like to welcome two players from the University of Nebraska-Omaha, the defending Summit League Champions. Last season, UNO sent three Division I players to the Rattlers and we are excited to add a couple of Mavericks back in the fold.

 

Cole Maharry (LHP - University of Nebraska-Omaha) Maharry is a 6'4, 195 lb left handed pitcher from Des Moines, Iowa. Currently a freshman at UNO, he's a 2013 graduate of Roosevelt High School in Des Moines.

 

Tim Schaareman (2B/SS - University of Nebraska-Omaha) Schaareman is a native of The Netherlands; he's a 5'11, 155 lb freshman infielder with the Mavericks. Tim played for the Dutch National Team for four years, spending two years apiece on the U-18 and U-16 programs. He helped his team win the European championship in 2011.

 

The Rattlers are also excited to welcome in players from New Mexico Highlands University, a Division II member of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. This is our first year of working with New Mexico Highlands.

 

Andrew Ratterman (OF - New Mexico Highlands University) A native of Dixon, California; Ratterman is a junior outfielder for the Cowboys. Ratterman played last season for Shasta College and hit .258 while collecting 33 hits, driving in 17 runs and stealing 8 bases for the Knights. Andrew is a left fielder that can play center and will be a great addition to the Rattlers outfielders.

 

Trent McDougall (LHP/1B - New Mexico Highlands University) McDougall is a raw Left-Hended Pitcher from Traverse City, Michigan. The 6'4, 215 lb freshman is a former hockey player who spent last season playing for the Florida Eels of the Eastern Junior Hockey League. McDougall also tired out for the Topeka RoadRunners of the North American Hockey League last July. After not making the RoadRunners, McDougall turned his full attention to baseball.

 

The Rattlers season kicks off May 28th as they travel to St. Joseph, Missouri to face the Mustangs. Rossville's home opener will be on May 29th versus the Joplin Outlaws in Rossville. Mid-Plains League play begins June 6th for the Rattlers as they travel to Peculiar, Missouri to take on the Midwest Athletics.

Tagen Lambotte In US Army Metro Classic

The Rossville Booster Club would like to congratulate Tagen Lambotte on all his success as a Rossville Dawg! Best of luck next school year as an Iowa Hawkeye.

Metro Classic Information from the US Army Metro Class Wrestling Committee --

Tagen Lambotte has been selected to wrestle in the US Army Metro Classic on March 11th at 6:30 p.m. at Kansas City Kansas Community College.  Come watch Tagen wrestle in the 145 pound weight class against Grant Leeth of Kearney Hill High School.

Congratulations to Rossville High School and Tagen Lambotte for this honor from the US Army Metro Classic Wrestling Committee.

RHS Girls Win First Round

    The RHS girls won their first round sub-state  tournament game again Pleasant Ridge on Tue. night at Rossville by a 58-44 score.

RHS Boys Win First Round

    The RHS Boys won their first round game at the Sub State tournament with a 52-48 victory over Pleasant Ridge.    They next face Rock Creek on Thur., March 6 at Silver Lake.  Rock Creek destroyed St. Marys (1-20) 57-20 in their first round game.

Tagen Lambotte Wins Number 4

HAYS — For someone who had just captured his fourth straight state title, becoming just the 31st Kansan ever to accomplish the rare feat, Rossville’s Tagen Lambotte sure had a hard time celebrating.
    Then again, with the lofty demands Lambotte puts upon on himself, the emotion wasn’t the least bit surprising.
    Lambotte appreciated the fact he made history at Saturday’s Class 3-2-1A state tournament in Hays. He just didn’t like the way he went about it, taking a tense 4-3 victory over Centralia’s Andrew Beck in the 152-pound final.
    “I’m not happy at all,” said Lambotte, who finished the season 41-1 and his career 164-5 with previous titles coming at 135 and two at 145. “I just didn’t execute.”
Lambotte was joined atop the medal stand by freshman Bryce Gfeller, who captured the 106 title with a 13-10 win over Atchison County’s Hunter Ostertag. The Bulldogs couldn’t quite make it 3-for-3 in the finals as 170-pounder Isaac Luellen finished second after getting pinned by Plainville’s Dylan Wiesner.
But the day was a banner one for the Bulldogs, who finished runner-up to Norton in the team standings for the highest state finish in the program’s history.
    Lambotte dominated Beck 17-5 in last week’s regional finals but struggled to execute the moves with which he had run roughshod through most of his foes this season. The match was scoreless after the first period and remained that way when Beck was able to ride out Lambotte throughout the entire second period.
    “I didn’t get off the bottom and that doesn’t allow me to do what I do best, and that’s be on my feet,” Lambotte said. “I was close on a couple throw behinds in the first period, but he backed out of bounds. It’s my job to finish and I didn’t do it. But I wasn’t worried because I knew we were going to our feet.”
Lambotte put the match in his faith to get takedowns, letting Beck to his feet to start the third period. Sure enough, he immediately did. After letting Beck back up, he got another takedown and only surrendered an escape in the final part of the match, never letting Beck get close for a takedown.
    Despite the disappointing finish, Lambotte stayed true to form in his quest to always perform at his best when talking about his historic prep run.
    “It’s a check mark on the bucket list,” he said. “Now I have to start working for the next one.”
Before Lambotte could put the wraps on title No. 4, Gfeller began his quest to potentially join his senior teammate as a four-timer.
    It was a wild ride to the title, though. After building a commanding 13-3 midway through the second period with four takedowns and a near pin, Gfeller saw Ostertag charge back.
The Tiger freshman reversed from his back to end the second period, and then took Gfeller to his back with less than a minute to go in the match.
    Gfeller was able to fight off the pin and survived with the wild 13-10 win.
“I was just thinking don’t get pinned, and I was trying to arch as hard as I could,” said Gfeller, who beat Ostertag in three of their four meetings this season. “My coach just kept yelling, ‘Keep fighting! Keep fighting!’”
    Gfeller finished the season at 38-7 and, admittedly, in a much higher spot than he imagined possible at the start of the season.
    “At the beginning of the season, I knew I could make it to state, but I didn’t know how far I’d get,” Gfeller said. “After Basehor, I went on a really hot streak, and from there I started thinking I have a chance.”
And now he’s in position to perhaps duplicate Lambotte.
    “Tagen’s a great inspirational leader, and a lot of the kids on our team look up to him and want to do the same things he’s done,” Gfeller said. “State title’s definitely something I wanted to get done this year and I want to keep doing it.”
    Luellen couldn’t make it three champions for the Bulldogs as Wiesner controlled the match. Luellen trailed 5-0 entering the third period when Wiesner caught him and pinned him with 1:36 to go.

RHS came in second as a team at the 321A state championships with Bryce Gfeller  and Tagen Lambotte winning their classes and Isaac Luellen coming in as runner up in the 170# class.  Jacob and Derek Gentry were also state qualifiers.

    Being #2 in the state is quite an accomplishment.

    RHS  Freshman Bryce Gfeller won the 3-2-1 state championship in his 106 pound class at Hays on March 1.

D. J. Rezac (04) Receives Doctorate

    D. J Rezac is working for Midwest Veterinary Servics, Inc., in Oakland, NE. where he now lives.   He received his Doctorate in Diagnostic Medicine/Pathobiology from KSU College of Veterinary Medicine in December.

Class 3-2-1A Wresting Hays

Below are Friday's results at Gross Colisieum  in Hays, Kansas which include the first 3 rounds of competition.  The finals will be on Saturday, March 1, which will include three from Rossville.  Freshman Bryce Gfeller is a finalist in the 106 pound class after two pins (one in 23 seconds) and a 9-4 decision. Senior Tagen Lambotte (152#), already a three time state champion will be shooting for his fourth will be up against Andrew Beck of Centrailia.   Isaac Luellen (41-8) will  facing Plainville's Dylan Wiesner in the final after picking up one pin and two major decisions on Friday in the 170 pound class.
