Esterbrooks Have a Boy

    Jason and Mindy Esterbrook of Rossville are the proud parents of a new baby boy born march 25 at Stormont-Vail.

Rattlers Announce Four More Players

The Rossville Rattlers are proud to announce the next batch of 2014 signees.
 
We welcome in our first player from Truman State University, a member of the Division II MIAA Conference.
 
Tyler Spencer (RHP - Truman State University) Spencer is a 6'3, 195-lb right handed pitcher from Truman State University. The native of West Des Moines, Iowa had a team-high two saves working 16 games in relief as a freshman. He tossed 16 innings with 10 strikeouts and was named to the MIAA Commissioners Academic Honor Roll.
 
We have also signed three local players, building on our commitment to be a destination for area baseball talent.
 
Josh Srna (C -  Metropolitan Community College - Longview) Srna is a 6'0, 180-lb catcher from Westmoreland, Kansas. A graduate of Rock Creek High school, Josh is currently playing for Metropolitan Community College - Longview in Lee's Summit, Missouri. Srna was named to 2012 all Mid-East League team, the 2012 Class 3A All-State team and was named the 2012 Class 3A State Player of the Year.
 
Shane Adams (LHP - Barton County Community College) Shane is a 6'3 left handed pitcher from Barton County Community College. Adams, a graduate of Rock Creek High School, was named to the 2012 All Mid-East League team and was 2012 Class 3A All-State second team selection.
 
Michael Singer (LHP - Washburn Rural High School) Singer is a 6'0, 180-lb left handed pitcher from Washburn Rural High School in Topeka, Kansas. Michael is a 2012 2nd team All-City selection and a 2012 All-Centennial League honorable mention for the Junior Blues. Michael is currently in his senior season with the Junior Blues this spring.

Marjorie Pearl Guerich Passes Away


Marjorie Pearl Guerich, 91, of St. Marys, died March 23 after an extended illness. “Marj” passed away peacefully at the St. Marys Manor surrounded by family members.
Born November 1, 1922, on a farm in Sandy Hook, near Rossville, Marj was the eldest of six children of Thomas M. and Florence G. Doyle Pearl. She attended James Grade School  in rural Shawnee County and was a graduate of Immaculate Conception Catholic High School in 1940.
She studied in East Chicago, Illinois, and St. Louis to become a nationally registered radiologic technologist. She worked at Topeka State Hospital for 27 years before retiring in 1987.
Marj was a longtime member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, the Daughters of Isabella Little Flower Circle, Kansans for Life, the Kansas Authors Club, the Wamego Writers Roundtable, Kevin Club, Kansas Historical Society, Kansas Association of Public Employees and the American Legion Auxiliary. She wrote stories about her life as a hobby and was active as a community hospice volunteer. She also was a frequent visitor of the residents at the St. Marys Manor.
An energetic traveler who toured a variety of national and international venues over the years, Marj was an excellent cook who loved to entertain relatives and friends at special dinners and holiday celebrations in her home.
As an elder of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation, Marj was extremely proud of her Native American heritage. During the Jesuit-Potawatomi Days in October 1998, she oversaw the preparations for St. Marys’ celebration of the 150th anniversary of the local Jesuit mission’s founding. A devout Roman Catholic, she was an avid supporter of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits).
Her children, Ann Marie (Al) Dobson, of Manhattan, and Clement Joseph “C.J.”. Guerich of Lawrence survive. Marj was the proud grandmother of Amy Marie Guerich, Overland Park, Sarah, Michael and Adam Guerich, all of Lawrence and Jenn Higgins and Marcus Dobson of Manhattan. Her great- grandchildren are Jordan Minor and Gavin and Arianna Higgins..
Also surviving are siblings, Robert L. Pearl, of Parma Heights, Ohio; Maureen Harris of Topeka; Sister Virginia Pearl, CSJ, of Concordia, and Gerald (Hildegard) Pearl of rural St. Marys. Marj was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, James B. “J.B.” Pearl of St. Marys.
In addition, she is survived by sister-in-law Dorothy Eileen Pearl, St. Marys, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 AM Thursday, March 27, 2014 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in St. Marys. Interment will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, St. Marys.
Marj will lie in state after 3:00 P.M. Wednesday, March 26, 2014 at Piper Funeral Home, St. Marys, where there will be a Prayer Vigil at 7:30 PM. Memorial contributions may be made to Immaculate Conception Catholic Church or Grace Hospice and sent in care of Piper Funeral Home, 714 Maple, St. Marys, Kansas 66536.     RHS junior Taylor Kirk has been named to the 3A All State Basketball team as an Honorable Mention.

Chester Gardner (64) Passes Away


     Chester "Chet" Oren Gardner, 67, of Topeka, died on Wednesday, March 19, 2014 at Stormont-Vail Hospital.
     Chet graduated from Rossville High School.
     Chet's wishes were to be cremated and a memorial service will take place at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, March 22 at Imago Dei Church, 1201 NW Central Ave., Topeka KS 66608.The family will receive friends at the church from 9:00 a.m. until service time. Inurnment with military honors will follow at Rossville Cemetery. Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel is assisting the family. Mid-East League All-Stars

    The Mid-East League has announced their All-League teams for basketball.   The following Rossville players were named.
    Taylor Kirk  is a member of the All-League girls team and Heidi Nitsch is Honorable Mention.
    Thatcher Horak made the boys All-League team and his brother Tucker Horak was named Honorable Mention.

Davis Warton Signs LOI

    RHS senior Davis Warton has signed a Letter of Intent to play football at William Jewell College in Liberty, MO.

Rattlers Add Four More Players

The Rossville Rattlers are announcing the next batch of signees for the summer of 2014.
 
We are excited to build a new relationship with the University of North Dakota, members of the Division I Western Athletic Conference.
 
Zach Heaser (SS - University of North Dakota) Heaser is a 5'9, 168-lb. short stop from Eyota, Minnesota. Heaser shows good bat speed and pop and makes consistent contact. Defensively, he has solid actions with a quick transfer and release. He has good footwork, reads hops well at short stop and makes plays. He will be a freshman at North Dakota University in the fall.
 
We also welcome in two more members of Independence Community College to the Rattlers. These two will join 3rd year Rattler and current Pirate Ethan Beckett this summer.
 
Garrett Weber (OF - Independence Community College) Garrett is a 6'2, 210-lb transfer from Emporia State. He'll play as a Catcher/Outfielder this spring for Independence Community College. Garrett lettered three years in baseball and 2 years in football for Mound City HS. Weber was a second-team all-league catcher his senior season.
 
James Hinnen (RHP - Independence Community College) James is a 5'10, 180-lb strike throwing, right handed pitcher from El Dorado, Kansas. Hinnen is playing for Independence Community College this spring. He throws in the low to mid 80's with some off-speed pitches.
 
Rossville will also welcome in our first player from Fort Scott Community College.
 
Bobby Pierce (LHP - Fort Scott Community College) Pierce is a 6'3, 180-lb left handed pitcher from Oklahoma City, OK. A graduate of Southmoore High school, Bobby has a very loose arm with plus off-speed. Pierce will be a starting pitcher for the Greyhounds and throw lots of innings for them this spring.

M. Myron Leinwetter, D. O., of Rossville,   is on the executive committee of the Kansas Association of Osteopathic Medicine.   The Association will be having their state convention  April 10-12.

Cole Brecheisen Plays for Pittsburgh State

   
    Cole Brecheisen of Rossville is a freshman at Pittsburgh State University and is on their baseball team.  He is the son on Curt and Candy Brecheisen and plays in the outfield after an outstanding high school baseball career.
