Cole Brechisen at Pittsburgh State U.


   Sophomore Cole  Brechisen from Rossville is on the Pittsburgh State University Baseball team roster for 2015.  He red-shirted his freshman year but hopes for playing time this spring.

   The fall 2014 Baseball Roster for Highland Community College has three  players from Rossville.      They are:

  Scott Schinn, sophomore,   right handed pitcher.

Volleyball Team Splits With Wabaunsee

     The RHS volleyball team split with Wabaunsee on Oct. 21,  winning the first match in a hard fought victory with scores of 17-25, 26-24, 29-27.  The second match was no so close with the Dawgs coming out on the losing end with scores of 12-25, 24-26.
     The Dawgs are now 3-7 in the Mid-East League.

Emily Amack (11) Gets Nursing Scholarship

    The Stormont-Vail Foundation has announced nursing scholarships for the fall 2014 semester totaling $76,150 for 97 students at the Baker University School of Nursing, Stormont-Vail Campus.   Amond the recipients is Emily Amack of  Rossville who graduated from RHS in 2011.

Mid East Cross Country Meet

    The Rossville cross country team competed in the Mid-East League tournament,  but only as individuals as there were not enough athletes to make up a team in either the girls or boys race.
    In the girls 4K race,  the following Dawgs paticipated along with their finishing position:  # 15, Morgan Foster, #24, Laura Giillum,  and  #27,  Alyssa Thompson.
    In the boys 5 K race,  the following Dawgs competed:  #23 Matt Stillion, #25, Sam Thederahn, #34, Perry Foster, and 47, Fred Schuler.

Abilene Invitational Volleyball

    The RHS volleyball team competed in the Abilene Invitational tournament on Oct. 18.
    Their first match was against host Abilene which the Dawgs lost,  11-25, 22-25.    Their next oppponent was Buhler.  The Dawgs easily won the first game 25-13,   but Buhler came back to win the next two games 18-25, 20-25.    The next opponent was St. Marys and this  match was a close one with scores of 26-28, 25-20, 21-25.  The final match was against Topeka High for seventh place.  The Dawgs prevailed in this match 25-23, 25-10.  

Emporia Volleyball Team Wins

    The RHS Volleyball team played Emporia on Oct. 16,  losing the match by scores of 18-25, 14-25.

Richard Wilson (66) Passes Away


    Richard E. “Dick” Wilson, 66, of Topeka, died October 15, 2014 at the House at Midland Care.
    He was born in Topeka, Kansas on July 10, 1948 the son of Leonard and Violet (Neeley) Wilson. In 1966 he graduated from Rossville High School.
    He served in the U.S. Army from 1968 to 1970. Dick was a machine operator for Hallmark Cards for 32 years. 
    Dick enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, restoring cars especially the 1971 Oldsmobile he was currently working on, and watching football. He was a Black Belt in Karate.
    Dick married Joyce M. Curran in Topeka in June of 1973. She survives. He is also survived by a daughter, Nicole (Scott) Lyons of Shoreline, WA, three grandsons, Lucas, Hudson and Mason, his step father Glenn Hause, a brother, Jim (Jeanni) Wilson, six sisters, Marilyn Holloway, Glenda (Bob) Backerman, Wanda (Ralph) Knight, Lori (Brian) McCann, Julie (Wade) McNorton, Midge Stalnaker, two step-sisters, Kathy Jackon and Amy Wadl, and a step-brother, James Vega. He was preceded in death by his mother, Violet Hause, his father, Leonard Wilson, and step-mother Freda Wilson.
    A memorial visitation will be held at the Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home after 4:00 on Monday, with a parish rosary at 6:00 p.m. A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at the Mater Dei Assumption Catholic Church at 8th & Jackson, on Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. 
    Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to Midland Care, SCARS-Second Chance Animal Refuge Society or the Helping Hands Humane Society and sent in care of Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home, 800 SW 6th Ave., Topeka, Kansas 66603.

Cody Mitchell (64) Passes Away

    Cody J. Mitchell, 68, passed away Friday, October 17, 2014 at the Good Samaritan Home in Wamego.   
    He was born December 22, 1945 at Oxnard, CA, the son of Ray and Molly Kovar Mitchell.    He graduated from Rossville High School in 1964.
    Cody grew up in the Delia community and served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War.  He worked for Santa Fe Railroad in Topeka and later owned and operated the Brass Rail in Topeka.   He moved to Arizona in 1985 and was a bartender at   local casinos in Laughlin, NV.    Cody moved back to Kansas in 2011.   
    He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Clara Winters and Thelma Lowy.    
Survivors include nephews, Vic Poe, Meriden and Wonnie Graves, Rossville; nieces, Tuesday Winters, Emporia and Terry Kirkpatrick, Lowry City, MO; several great nephews and nieces also survive.   
    Memorial graveside services will be at 10:00 A.M Friday, October 24, 2014 at the Rossville Cemetery, Rossville, Kansas.
