Rattlers Trying To Play

    The Rossville Rattlers lost their opening game of the season on May 27 against the Junction City Brigade by a score of 5-2.
    Th double header scheduled for May 28 was canceled because of field conditions.  Been a little wet lately.
    The next home game for the Rattlers will be June 5 at 7:00 PM

RHS ANNOUNCES TOP 10 SCHOLARS

Rossville High School announced the Top 10 Seniors of the Class of 2015 at graduation exercises on Sunday, May 17, 2015. The following seniors were recognized for their academic accomplishments: 

    Haley Brown, Lauryn Catron, Makayla Crow, Danielle Glotzbach, 

Breanna Hill, Rachel Lord, Nicholas Reesor, 

Andrea Rietcheck, Lake Schultz-Pruner, and Ethan Woodcock.

Tim Cheek (84) & Denise Dresch (82) Marry

    Timothy Cheek and Denise Dresh both attended Rossville High.  After Denise graduated in 1982,  they didn't see each other for over 30 years.  Denise returned to Rossville when her mother was ill and  they met again in 2013.  They married on April 1, 2015 and now live in Topeka.

     If your class year ends with a 5 or a 0,  your class should have reunion plans under way.   If not,  the time is short.  Most classes have them at the same time as the Tall Corn Festival which will be the first weekend in August.

Jason Logan At Butler CCC

      Hailing from Rossville, Kansas is our featured spotlight for today. Jason Logan grew up on his family’s commercial cow/calf operation where he actively participated in the day-to-day activities of maintaining the operation. During his tenure in the 4-H program J-Lo was an experienced showman exhibiting all four species but it’s not surprising his passion lied in showing cattle. Like many other young livestock enthusiasts, Jason began judging through his county 4-H program throughout grade school prior to Butler. Jason’s academic perfection in high school led him to numerous honors including being the President of the National Honors Society and leadership roles within his FFA Chapter.
       He plans to attend Kansas State in the fall to pursue a degree in Agricultural Technology Management with a minor in Animal Science and Agronomy. During his judging career here at Butler, Jason will value the memories made at the National Western, his favorite contest. “The miles and memories we had on the road traveling and practicing for the next big contest…” are what he will truly miss and he takes pride in being a member of the BuCo Family. To next year’s Sophomores, “Cherish every moment that you have together. You are an extremely talented team that will see your share of success, but the banners and plaques fade with time but the people you meet along the way will last a lifetime.”
      The Butler Family will miss you next year J-Lo, good luck in your future successes!

    Holly Frost of Rossville was a senior at Manhattan Christian College this year and was a forward on their basketball team.

Vincent Wiltz Passes Away

      Vincent G. Wiltz, 89, passed away Tuesday, May 19, 2015 at the St. Marys Manor.
      He was born November 3, 1925 in rural Nemaha County Kansas, the son of John and Helena (Christman) Wiltz.
      Vince served in the United States Army during WWII in the South Pacific and in Germany.  He retired from the Kansas National Guard in Topeka.  After his retirement, he and his wife Pat owned St. Marys Surplus Sales for many years.  He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in St. Marys and a member of Jimmie Lillard Post No. 31 of the American Legion at Rossville.
      He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, Joe, Eddie, Bernard, Leo and Nicholas; a sister, Mary and a granddaughter, Lily.
      He was united in marriage to Maxine M. “Pat” Hulsing on January 17, 1951 at Sabetha.  She survives of the home.
      Other survivors include 6 sons, David, Steve (Deana), Mike and significant other (Tammy) and Doug all of St. Marys, Dan (Tammy) and Don Wiltz all of Topeka; a daughter, Pat (George) Stewart, Columbia, MO; two sisters, Millie McElroy, Louisville, KY., and Cecilia Hudelson, Ashland City, TN; 12 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
      Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1:30 P.M. Saturday, May 23, 2015 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in St. Marys.  Interment will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, St. Marys.  Mr. Wiltz will lie in state from 4:00 until 7:00 P.M. Friday, May 22, 2015 at Piper Funeral Home in St. Marys where there will be a rosary recited at 7:00 P.M.  Memorial contributions may be made to the Pottawatomie-Wabaunsee Regional Library, St. Marys Branch or St. Marys Senior Center and sent in care of Piper Funeral Home, 714 Maple St., St. Marys, Kansas 66536.

Norma McDiffett Passes Away

Norma Jean McDiffett, 86, passed away Thursday, May 21, 2015 at the Rossville Health Care Center, Rossville.         She was born August 24, 1928 at Alta Vista, the daughter of Gilbert and Margaret Rodgers Beagel.  She was one of a family of seven children and lived most of her younger years on the Beagel homestead west of Alta Vista. She graduated from Dwight High School.            Norma was united in marriage to Pat McDiffett.  Together they had two children, Bob and Patti.  She was always involved in their lives in one way or another.            She retired from American States Insurance Company.  Norma loved camping and cooking (She was the best pie maker around).  She joined the Wheathearts square dance club and was a 15 year member.  Her love was square dancing and also round dancing.  She loved her family dearly.            Mrs. McDiffett was preceded in death by her parents Margaret and Gilbert Beagel.  Her husband Pat; two grandsons, Dwight Meade and Daniel McDiffett; two sisters, Eleanor Modig and Virginia Beagel; three brothers, Dwight, Donald and Robert Beagel.    Norma is survived by a son, Bob (Elaine) McDiffett, Wamego; a daughter, Patti (Chuck) Meade, Rossville; a brother, James (Terry) Beagel, Chicago, IL; three grandsons, Jared Meade, John McDiffett and Russell McDiffett.; granddaughters, Tonya Hatina, Debbie Boyle, Donna Gill and Doris Rollo; great-grandchildren, Erika & Emily Hatina, Giauna Meade, Jaci, Kelsey and Kyra McDiffett, Tiara Boles, Johnny Gill, Ben Rollo and Sheldon Rollo.            It was Mrs. McDiffett's request to be cremated.  Memorial services will be at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, May 30, 2015 at Piper Funeral Home in St. Marys.  In Lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Norma J. McDiffett Memorial Fund and sent in care of Piper Funeral Home, 714 Maple St., St. Marys, Kansas 66536.
