Britnee Douglas Receives WU Awards


Rossville High School senior Britnee Douglas was recently honored at a recognition reception held on Washburn University’s campus on Wed., April 27, 2016. She was among over 200 Shawnee County seniors receiving awards. Each received a certificate and computer bag with the Washburn University insignia. Britnee was awarded an Academic and Presidential Scholarship based on her GPA and ACT scores. Both scholarships are renewable for all four years she attends Washburn. Britnee will be playing softball for the Ichabods while she is pursuing her degree in Nursing.

Lawrence Bowers Passes Away

Lawrence A. Bowers Jr., 76 passed away Thursday, May 12, 2016 at the St. Marys Manor.
He was born February 1, 1940 at Topeka the son of Lawrence A. Bowers Sr. and Christina L. Thompson Bowers.  Mr. Bowers was raised in the Delia community and graduated from Delia High School.  He served in the United States Marine Corp Reserves.
Larry was an electrician and had worked for Santa Fe Railroad and Jeffrey Energy Center before he retired.  He was a member of Our Lady of Snows Catholic Church on the Potawatomi Indian Reservation.  He was a member of Jimmy Lillard Post No. 31 of the American Legion at Rossville and was a member of Local No. 304 Electrical Union.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
On November 9, 1963 he was united in marriage to Marla Brooks at Great Falls, MT.  She survives of the home.
Other survivors include his son, Fr. Larry Bowers, Osage City; two daughters Theresa (Glenn) Swisher, Emmett and Christine (Mike) Kuestersteffen, El Dorado; a brother, John Bowers, Joliet, IL; three sisters, Christina Brennan-Rezac, St. Marys, Ruth Ann Walker, Auburn and Diane Budden, St. Marys; a sister-in-law, Ann Bowers, Chapel Hill, TN; grandchildren, Morgan (Siera), Mattie, Benjamin, Joshua (Elizabeth), Caleb, Zachary and Anna; two great-grandchildren, Carter and Philomena.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 A.M. Saturday, May 14, 2016 at Sacred Heart Conservatory in Delia. A rosary followed by visitation will be at 9:00 A.M. Saturday.  Interment will be in Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery, Emmett.  Memorial Contributions may be made to Our Lady Of Snows Catholic Church and sent in care of Piper Funeral Home.  To leave an online condolence please go to www.piperfuneralhome.com

Lady Dawgs Are Mid-East Champs

    The Lady Dawgs softball team picked up their eighth straight win on Tuesday when they defeated Rock Creek 2-1 and 12-0.  The team now stands at 10-0 in the Mid-East League and 17-3 overall.

Dawgs Win Two Against Rock Creek

    The RHS baseball team picked up two more wins by defeating Rock Creek 6-2 and 3-2 on May 10 at Joe Campbell Stadium.
    The Dawgs are 7-3 in the Mid-East league and 12-6 overall.

Isaac Luellen To Become A Loper

Rossville High School Senior Isaac Luellen has signed a National Letter of Intent to wrestle at University of Nebraska-Kearney. The UNK Lopers are a NCAA DII power house wrestling program. In the past 10 years they have been National Champions 3 times and National Runners up 5 times. While at Rossville High, Isaac has been a 3 time state qualifier and 2 time state finalist. In his sophomore season, Isaac placed 2nd at 171 pound. Last year as a Junior, Isaac won the 182 pound weight class after battling back from a dislocated elbow he suffered in the state championship football game. He finished last season with a 20-0 record and currently has a 94-23 career record in high school. Isaac has put a lot of time in the wrestling room outside the high school season as well. The past two summers he has competed in the Asics Fargo Junior-Cadet National Championships, which is one of, if not the largest national tournaments in the summer. At Fargo, Isaac has earned “All American” honors by placing in the top 8, 2 times in freestyle and 2 times in Greco which is a pretty major feat. He was also an All American at the Cedar Falls National Folkstyle tournament last spring.

Rossville High School senior Brittnee Zemek has signed her National letter of Intent to play softball at Wasburn University. Brittnee is a two time All Mid-East league selectee. Last season, she was a 1st Team All MEL selection. Offensively Brittnee finished the last high school season with a .517 batting average and a .571 on base percentage and 7 doubles. She also scored 29 runs and had 28 RBI’s. Defensively she played a very solid and sure handed 2nd base for the Lady Dawgs. She has played summer ball for the Topeka Extreme and most recently with the Kansas Heatwave. Her gritty, hardworking attitude as well as her coachability will make her a great fit for the Lady Bods softball squad.

Golf Team 2nd At Mid-East Meet

The RHS boys golf team came in second just 4 strokes off first place St. Marys in the Mid-East League golf tournament on May 10 at the Stagg Hill course.

Boys Track At Riley Co.

The Rossville boys competed in the Riley County Invitation by combining with St. Marys and competing as Kaw Valley.  The Kaw Valley team came in 2nd of the 11 teams.

    Rachel Day came in 3rd in the 100 M Dash after having the fastest time in the preliminaries.  Taylor Bittner was 4th in the 1600 M run and 3rd in the 3200 M run.

    The RHS boys golf team came in 4th of 10 teams at the Perry-Lecompton Invitational at the Lake Perry Country Club.    Gabe Marney was 6th high individual with an 81.  Andrew Hudson tied for 15th with an 88 stroke total.

Rossville Woman Jailed For Stabbing

A woman was jailed Tuesday in connection with an overnight stabbing during a domestic disturbance in Rossville, authorities said.
The woman, Krystle M. Schreiner, 23, was booked into the Shawnee County Jail at 12:46 a.m. in connection with aggravated battery and aggravated endangering a child.
According to Shawnee County sheriff’s officials, the incident was reported at 11:18 p.m. at a residence at 203 E. Perry St. in Rossville.
Deputies who investigated the incident determined a disturbance had occurred between Schreiner and Jeffrey W. Ard, 35. During the disturbance, sheriff’s officials said, Schreiner cut Ard with a knife.
Ard’s injuries were considered minor, and authorities said he refused ambulance transportation to a hospital.
The Rossville Fire Department also responded to the residence.

Terry Paine (71) Passes Away


Terry Lee Paine, 62 passed away Thursday, May 5, 2016 at a nursing facility in Holton.
Terry was born November 13, 1953 at Ellsworth, the son of Edward E. and Darlene M. Cottrell Paine.  He was raised in the Rossville community and graduated from Rossville High School in 1971.
He was a missionary-pastor/welder.  Terry had worked for USD#321 and USD#320.  He was a welder for many years.  Terry was saved and baptized in 1997 at the Rossville Bible Church.  He served as a missionary and pastor for the Potawatomi, Kickapoo and Yte Tribes.  Terry served as pastor for the Nuuchiu Bible Baptist Church in Ignacio, CO.  He was a member of Easton Baptist Church in Des Moines.
Terry was preceded in death by his parents, and two children, Chad Everett and Laney Noel.
On August 27, 1973 he was united in marriage to Leslie Sumner at the Rossville City Park.  She survives of the home.
Other survivors include his son, Yancy Paine, Topeka; three daughters, Teri Boulet, Long Beach, MS, Katie Paine and Morgan Paine both of Topeka; three brothers. Edward Paine, Topeka, Jonny Paine, Maple Hill and Mark Paine Topeka; his sister, Tracy Paine, Topeka; an uncle Kent Paine, Rossville; five grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 A.M. Monday, May 9, 2016 at the Rossville Bible Church, Rossville.  Interment will be in the Delia Cemetery.  Mr. Paine will lie in state and the family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. Sunday, May 8th at Piper Funeral Home in St. Marys.  Memorial contributions may be made to the Native American Mission % Easton Baptist Church, 5075 NE 23rd Ave., Des Moines, Iowa 50317.
