Silver Lake Volleyball Tournament

The Lady Dawgs won their last two matches over Sabetha and Chapman to garner fifth place after losing their first three matches.

Evan Jones, age 67, passed away in Ohio. He was in the RHS class of 1967.

Ottman-Cox Marriage

In July,  Shawnee County issued a marriage license to Bethany Ottman, 29, of Rossville, and Jessica Cox, 29, also of Rossville.

1.  Silver Lake
Last: Won 36-28 @ Rossville  
On Friday the second-ranked Eagles traveled to No. 1 Rossville and ended the Bulldawgs’ 32-game winning streak with a 36-28 win. Silver Lake jumped out to a 22-0 lead before Rossville would pull to within 22-7 at halftime. The Bulldogs got a Jacob Bradshaw touchdown run in the third quarter to tighten the score to 22-14. Silver Lake would expand the lead with a third quarter touchdown, then quarterback Dalton Dultmeier’s 8-yard scoring run on the first play of the fourth quarter put the Eagles in control 36-14. Silver Lake had several mistakes late but the defense stopped Rossville twice inside Eagle territory.

2.  Hoisington
Last: Won 32-14 @ Pratt 
 Hoisington scored in each quarter in picking up a key Central Kansas League win, in a game that both teams entered without a loss. Hunter Hanzlick rushed for three consecutive touchdowns to expand the Cardinals’ lead from 13-7 in the second quarter to 32-7 in the fourth quarter. The Cardinals rushed for more than 325 yards on the night led by Cam Davis’ 130-yard effort. Pratt’s second touchdown came in the final minute of the game
.

3.  ROSSVILLE
Last: Lost 36-28 vs. Silver Lake
Rossville’s 32-game winning steak ended with a 36-28 loss against Silver Lake in the annual War on 24. The Bulldawgs tried to come back late with two touchdowns in a 56-second span and then had chances when Silver Lake turned the ball over on three straight possessions late. Rossville had won the last three contests versus Silver Lake. Jacob Bradshaw had 27 carries for 91 yards with a TD and completed 8 of 16 passes for 153 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions.

4.   PHILLIPSBURG
Last: Won 56-14 @ Ellis
Phillipsburg rolled over Ellis, 56-14, in a Mid-Continent League road game. The Panthers scored on four of five offensive plays, including three in a row. Kirk Coomes rushed nine times for 157 yards and scores of 30 and 50 yards. Mark Coomes had six rushes for 105 yards and scores of 32 and 25 yards. Trey Sides had an 86-yard TD run and a 65-yard scoring pass. The Panthers had 390 yards in the first half. Coach J.B. Covington missed part of the week to remove malignant melanoma on his face.

5.  GARDEN PLAIN
Last: Won 56-20 @ Belle Plaine
Garden Plain rolled over Belle Plaine, 56-20. Garden Plain led 35-0 at halftime and 42-0 before the Dragons scored three touchdowns late. The Owls held a 396-310 yardage edge, including 313-144 on the ground. Martin Landwehr scored on runs of 4 and 57 yards and finished with seven carries for 97 yards, both team-highs.

LaVerne Hoffman Passes Away

    LaVerne Hoffman, 85, Topeka, passed away Wednesday, September 28, 2016. 
    She was born February 13, 1931, in Topeka, Kansas, the daughter of James and Viola (Thompson) Adkins. She graduated from Rossville High School. LaVerne was a member of Willard Baptist Church. 
    On July 3, 1948, she married Marvin L. Hoffman in Topeka. He preceded her in death on April 22, 2005. She was also preceded in death by her daughter, Kay Oller, brother, Otis Reed, and twin sister, Lorraine. Survivors include her children: Pam (Harold) Richey; Marvin (Sherri) Hoffman, Jr. and Bill (Coy) Hoffman, all of Topeka; brother: Louis Adkins, Berryville, AR; grandchildren & great-grandchildren: Kim (Mark) Miller and their children, Colton & Ashlyn; Rich (Julie) Deiter; Megan Richey; Traci Hoffman; Jasen (Stephanie) Hoffman and their children, Aiden & Callan; Jared Wright; Lacey (Dustin) Brunin and their children, Quinton & Kensley and Brady (Loren) Hoffman and their son, Hewitt. 
    Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m., Friday, October 7, 2016, at Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel. Interment will follow at Dover Cemetery. LaVerne will lie in state after 9:00 a.m. Thursday, at the funeral home, where the family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Willard Baptist Church, 107 N. Mary Mees Passes Away

Mary Amelia Tenbrink Mees, age 100, of St. Marys,  passed away Thursday, September 29, 2016 at the St. Marys Manor.
She was born May 14, 1916 in the Kuenzli Creek comunity near Alma the daughter of John and Emma Stech Tenbrink.  Mary graduated from Alma High School with the class of 1934.   She taught school near Alta Vista, then graduated from beauty school  and opened her own beauty shop in Alma.
