KSNT Article On Softball Team

ROSSVILLE (KSNT) – The Rossville softball team enters the Class 3A state tournament on Thursday afternoon with a perfect (20-0) record. The Lady Dawgs are Mid-East League and Regional champions despite a few scares this season.

This is the first state tournament appearance for Rossville softball since 2013. The last, and only, state championship came in the year 2000.

“We’re focused on our first opponent and there’s a lot of great teams that are going to be in Manhattan and we’re focused om Thomas More Prep,” said Rossville softball coach Adam Roorbach.

“We have three more games to go win for a state championship,” said Rossville senior Lora Shinn. “That’s kind of been our thing all year. One game, we won, great. Now it’s time to move on.”

“I think winning the state championship would really give us, all the girls in the community, a boost,” said Rossville junior Ariel Sherer. “A lot of people talk about football and basketball but I think bringing softball back into the equation it would really give us and the community a huge confidence boost.”

“We all work really well together,” said Rossville senior Sara Shinn. “I think we mesh really well as a team and I think working as a team helps us finish the goal of being undefeated.”

“We have talked about winning a state title all year,” said Roorbach. “It’s been our goal. Some teams just want to run from it, but we chose to run toward it. We wanted to win every game, win a Mid-East League title, win a regional title, win a state title. We’ve checked a lot of boxes and we have three games left.”

Rossville begins it’s state tournament with a quarterfinal game at 5:00 p.m. Thursday against Thomas More Prep at the Twin Oaks Softball Complex in Manhattan. The semifinals and championship games will be played on Friday afternoon.

Morgan Cahill Receives Award

LAWRENCE – The University of Kansas mathematics department recently recognized its undergraduate and graduate students and faculty for outstanding academic and teaching achievements at its 60th annual honors banquet.

Two students received certificates and Jayhawk statues from the Kansas Algebra Program for their outstanding contributions to teaching, tutoring and extra duties. Winners were Morgan Cahill, a senior in biology from Rossville, and Rachel North, a senior in journalism from Overland Park.

A message from Toby McCullough, the principal of Rossville Jr.-Sr. High School: “The RHS Senior Class of 2017 will probably be remembered most as being part of three state football championships but their accomplishments were much more than that. This class of 49 seniors will be receiving over $460,000 in scholarships. Eighty-eight percent of them are continuing their education. The remaining students have careers outlined in the workforce or the military. Seven students have already completed their certification at Washburn Tech.

This senior class has been one of our best academic classes in years. The average ACT score was one of the highest in the past ten years, with 33 percent of the students attaining a score of 25 or higher. Lead by senior leadership, RHS had state qualifiers and state placers in music, forensics, FBLA, FCCLA, and FFA. The dance team and cheer squad won numerous awards. Almost 80 percent of the students participated in three or more extracurricular activities each year throughout their high school careers. And last of all, no students in this class failed to meet their requirements to graduate - 100% graduation rate.”

Alumni Dinner June 3

      The Rossville High Alumni Foundation dinner and program is Saturday, June 3^rd. Social time starts at 4:00 with dinner at 6:00. The party will be held at Dekat Parish Hall. 

       After dinner the winners of the Alumni scholarships will be introduced. This year Morgan Foster, Laura Gillum and Emily Woodcock will each receive $1,500 to be used for their college education.           Mr. Toby McCullough and Mrs. Ann McCullough will talk about their time as teachers and principals at Rossville schools. They are both retiring after this school year. Mr. McCullough will also speak about some of the accomplishments of the students during this past school year. Class roll call, pictures and more visiting will follow.

Softball State Bracket

    The 3A state softball bracket is out.  Rossville is seeded #2.  Riverton is also undefeated and seeded #1.
    The first opponent for the Lady Dawgs will be Hays-Thomas More Prep-Marian.  The game will be at 5:00 PM on Thur, May 25.

Details Of Stephen Snyder (99) Murder

In seeking evidence of contact between slaying victim Stephen Matthew Snyder and defendant Anthony N. Darcy, police said they were seeking call logs from his cellphone to show phone traffic between the two men before Snyder was fatally shot May 1 outside Darcy’s southwest Topeka home, a case affidavit says. 

A Shawnee County District Court judge made the affidavit public Tuesday.

Besides call logs, a Topeka police officer sought photos, video, text messages, a contact list and other data from the flip phone owned by Anthony N. Darcy, according to the affidavit application seeking a search warrant.

Darcy, 81, is charged with premeditated first-degree murder, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and aggravated endangering of a child younger than 18, according to court records.

During a homicide trial or hearing, a police officer specializing in gleaning evidence from cellphones often testifies about whether messages were recorded, who placed and received a call, the time the call was placed, and where the defendant was when he placed the call. Sometimes the number of calls made between a defendant and victim also may be important.

Snyder, 36, was shot May 1 outside Darcy’s house at 3031 S.W. 33rd.

On the day Snyder was shot, Darcy called Snyder saying it was OK for him to come over to the house about 6 p.m., according to the affidavit. Snyder had left a message a day earlier on Darcy’s phone saying he would like to drop by the house to look at it and take some measurements for changes.

The shooting of Snyder was reported by Darcy to a law enforcement dispatcher at 6:08 p.m. As Snyder and his 8-year-old son approached the house, the affidavit said, they were confronted by Darcy, who had a gun. Witnesses said they saw a man running from the residence, heard loud noises and saw him fall.

The caller told the dispatcher he had just shot someone because “he was tired of his (expletive,)” the affidavit said.

Darcy told the dispatcher the unloaded firearm was on a counter in the house. Snyder suffered multiple gunshot wounds, a statement issued by District Attorney Mike Kagay said.

Snyder and an unidentified person had closed April 27 on Darcy’s house, but Snyder had allowed Darcy to continue living in the house for two weeks with a move-out date by May 10. During that time, the buyers were to have access to the house as long as they contacted Darcy first.

On the day before the sale, Darcy presented a lease without the language allowing the buyers to visit the house. The buyers didn’t sign that lease, and Darcy, who wasn’t “happy about them wanting to paint some rooms in the house,” indicated he might back out of the deal, the affidavit said.

But during the sale, Darcy “had not complained” about the buyers visiting the house, the affidavit said.

“Mr. Darcy was not upset about those terms until after the sale,” the affidavit said, and Darcy told someone after the sale “that he was not going to let anyone in his house.”

On Wednesday, Darcy remained in Shawnee County Jail in lieu of $1 million cash or professional surety bond, a jail official said. Darcy’s preliminary hearing is scheduled for June 23.

At Darcy’s first appearance, a judge appointed the public defender’s officer to represent him after he said Social Security payments were his sole source of income.

Brett Cowdin Into SCBHOF

    Among the 2017 Shawnee County Baseball Hall Of Fame  inductees  is former Rossville High coach Brett Cowdin.  Cowdin coached at five Shawnee County high schools and also launched two college-age summer baseball programs before his death in 2013. He coached at Highland Park, Hayden, Topeka West, Rossville and Washburn Rural, and was the Scots’ first coach in the early 1990s. Cowdin also founded the Topeka Golden Giants and Rossville Rattlers summer semi-pro teams. Cowdin’s No. 14 was retired by both the Rattlers and Golden Giants. Cowdin, a graduate of Topeka West and Washburn, coached 29 players drafted by major-league franchises.
