Richard F. Keys Passes Away

Richard F. Keyes Jr., passed away Saturday, July 15, 2017 at St. Joseph Medical Center in Kansas City, MO.
He was born January 23, 1948 at Wauseon, OH., the son of Richard F. Keyes Sr. and Phyllis M. Hanson Keyes.  He grew up in Oaktown, Indiana.  Richard served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War.
Richard and his family moved to the St. Marys community in 1979.  He was a circuit engineer for Southwestern Bell Telephone Company in Topeka.  Richard was a member of St. John Vianney Catholic Church in Maple Hill, the Knights of Columbus and was a forth degree member of the Thomas A. McNeive Assembly.  He had been a member of the St. Marys Fire Department for many years and had served as a reserve officer for the St. Marys Police Department.
Richard was preceded in death by his father, Richard F. Keyes Sr.
On August 19, 1972 he was united in marriage to Judy Fryzelka at Traverse City, MI.  She survives of the home.
Other survivors include his mother, Phyllis Keyes; his children, Richard Keyes III, Michael Keyes, Thomas Keyes, Robert Keyes, Monica Kazda and Anna Bayer; three brothers, Steve, Kurt and Rob Keyes; 13 grandchildren.
Requiem Mass will be at 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, July 19, 2017 at St. John Vianney Catholic Church in Maple Hill. Interment will be in the Maple Hill Cemetery.  Mr. Keyes will lie in state and the family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M. Tuesday, July 18, 2017 at Piper Funeral Home in St. Marys where a rosary will be recited at 7:00 P.M.  Memorial contributions may be made in Mr. Keyes name and sent in care of Piper Funeral Home, 714 Maple St., St. Marys, Kansas 66536.

Rachel Lord (15) on KSU Dean's List

Rachel Lord, of Willard, was on the Kansas State University Dean’s Honor Roll for the Spring 2017 semester.

Youth Baseball Clinic

K4 Sports and the Rossville Rattlers are teaming up! 

Join us on July 16 from 1pm to 4pm for a baseball/softball skills clinic with the Rossville Rattlers! They will be working with your boys and girls on hitting, fielding, catching, and more! You do not want to miss this opportunity! We look forward to seeing you all there!

Cost for this clinic is $70 for non-members and $53 for members. This cost includes a t-shirt.

    Therese VanderPutten of Rossville was on the Wichita State University Dean's Honor Roll for Spring of 2017.

Andrea Rietcheck (15) On ESU Dean's List

    Andrea Rietcheck  of Rossville was named to the university honor roll and College of Liberal Arts & Sciences dean's list at Emporia State University for the spring semester.

Cowdin Inducted Into Hall Of Fame

    The Shawnee Co. Baseball Hall Of Fame had their 2017 Induction ceremony Thur night.  Bret Cowdin, former Rossville High baseball coach,  was one of those inducted.  You can read about, and also see video, of the event at:

Hill and Foster Get PEO Scholarships

Reed Miller (17) To Boys State

     Reed Miller from Rossville High participated in the 2017 session of the American Legion Boys State of Kansas Leadership Academy on June 4-9 at Kansas State University in Manhattan.

Rattlers Defeat Midwest Athletics

    The Rattlers went 5 innings without a score,  but they got two runs in the 6th, 7th and 8th innings to defeat the Midwest Athletics 6-4 at Joe Campbell Stadium on Wed night.

Cowdin Induction In Hall Of Fame

    The Shawnee County Baseball Hall of Fame will induct its 2017 class  at 6 PM on Thursday, July 13,  at the Downtown Ramada Inn and Convention Center. Tickets are $25 and available at the Shawnee County Parks & Recreation office (785-251-6885) and Seabrook Apple Market.
    Among the new inductees is Bret Cowdin, former coach at Rossville High and Manager of the Rossville Rattlers.  Cowdin coached at five Shawnee County high schools and  launched two college-age summer baseball programs before his death in 2013. He coached at Highland Park, Hayden, Topeka West, Rossville and Washburn Rural high schools.   Cowdin also founded the Topeka Golden Giants and Rossville Rattlers that now play in the Mid-Plains League.  His No. 14 was retired by both the Rattlers and Golden Giants.  The Mid-Plains League championship trophy is named the Bret Cowdin Cup.  A  graduate of Topeka West and Washburn, Bret coached 29 players drafted by major-league franchises.
