Nida (Mogus) Austin Passes Away


Nida Mae Austin, resident of Ponca City, passed away on Friday, March 15, 2019, surrounded by her family. She was 77 years old. 

Nida was born on December 1, 1941 in Manhattan, Kansas to Andy Mogus and Beth (Chapman) Mogus. She attended Rossville Schools. Nida and her family moved to Bartlesville where she met the love of her life, Bob Austin. They married in 1970. In 1971, they moved with their 4 kids to Ponca City. In 1976, they opened Bob’s Picture Box and together they operated the business till Bob’s death in 1998. Then, Nida began employment with Albertson’s Inc. till retirement. Nida enjoyed long lasting friendships, traveling , bowling, ceramics, making crafts, sorority, and spending time with her grandkids and family. 

Nida was preceded in death by her mother Beth, spouse Bob, and two children Kathy and Mike. 

She is survived by her father Andy Mogus, son Rich Cantillon and wife Pam, daughters Candy Karpe and Kristy Alexander and spouse Jammer Jones. She has 11 grandchildren, Chance, Austin, Taylor, Nichole, Maggie, Jimmy, Colby, Kyle, Tucker, Reed, and Brandon, and 10 great grandchildren with one on the way. 

A rosary service for Nida will be held at Trout Funeral Home on Monday, March 18, 2019 at 6:00 pm with Deacon Dick Robinson officiating. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, March 19, 2019 at 10:00 am at St. Mary's Catholic Church with Father Carson Krittenbrink officiating. Following the ceremony, Nida will be laid to rest next to her husband at Odd Fellows Cemetery. 

Casketbearers will be: Chance Cantillon, Austin Cantillon, Colby Cantillon, Kyle Karpe, Tucker Alexander, Reed Alexander, and Brandon Alexander. 

Memorial donations may be made in Nida's honor to Peachtree Landing, 105 W Hazel Ave, Ponca City, OK 74601.

Nida was a member of the RHS class of 1960 but did not graduate from Rossville.

WU Splits With Emporia State

    Washburn University played two softball games against Emporia State on Sat.
    Washburn won the first game 6-3.  Taylor Kirk had two hits, 1 run, and 3 RBIs.   One of her two hits was a double.  Her three RBIs accounted for half of the WU scores.
     In the second game,  Taylor had one hit in two at bats and scored the team's only run in a 9-1 loss.  Taylor scored after hitting a triple and being able to score on Bri Frances' ground out to the pitcher.

Marvin Ellis Passes Away


Marvin Dean Ellis, 90, Maple Hill, passed away Friday, March 15, 2019 at the Rossville Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center.
He was born February 15, 1929 at Soldier, the son of Roy J. and Dorothy C. Mallen Ellis. Dean grew up in the Soldier, Manhattan and St. Marys communities. He attended St. Marys High School. Dean served in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict.
Dean was a truck driver for Kincaid Truck Line in St. Marys. He owned and operated the B&B Café, Mr. D’s and D&W Snack Bar all in St. Marys. He managed the Nickerson Farm’s at Paxico. He was a district manager for Highway Oil. Dean cooked at Puffy’s in Maple and the St. Marys Sale Barn. He was a member of the St. Marys Bible Baptist Church, and was a member of the Maple Hill Senior Center.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother Ronald K. Ellis.
On July 25, 1959 he was united in marriage to Winnie L. Richards. She survives of the home.
Other survivors include two sons, Larry D. (Ellen) Ellis, Springfield, MO, and Steven W. Ellis, Delia; a daughter, Lynette L. Muller, Manhattan; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren;
Funeral services will be at 11:00 A.M. Thursday, March 21, 2019 at Piper Funeral Home. Interment will be in the Valley View Cemetery, St. Marys. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. Wednesday, March 20, 2019 at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Marys Bible Baptist Church or the American Diabetes Association and sent in care of Piper Funeral Home, 714 Maple St., St. Marys, Kansas 66536.

Haley Brown Headed To MSU

Haley Brown as recently offered and accepted a graduate position at Missouri State University in Springfield, MO.  She is currently in the process of getting admitted into the university and graduate program (Master of Applied Science in Sport & Fitness Management).  She will graduate from KSU this spring.

Washburn Loses To U. of MO, St. Louis

The Washburn U. softball team had trouble generating offense and suffered two losses in a doubleheader against Univesity of Missouri--St Louis on March 14.    They lost game game one 1-0 as they only had 3 hits and scored no runs.  Taylor Kirk had one of the three hits.  Game two was only a little better as they only found three hits,  but they did score one run.  Taylor did not get a hit in game two, going 1 for 6 for the day.

Nicholas Bawden Passes Away

Nicholas Michael Bawden, 18, passed away Monday, March 11, 2019 at his home.
He was born December 11, 2000 at Onaga, the son of Brian K. and Diane VandeVelde Bawden. Nick lived in the Emmett community all of his life. He had worked at St. Marys Lumber.
Nick was preceded in death by his father.
Survivors include his mother, Diane (future step-father, John Wehner); brothers Christopher David Bawden, Hoyt and Charles Alexander Bawden, Rossville; sisters, Stephanie Bawden Kerr, in Nebraska, Joanna Nicole Bawden, Rossville and Barbara Christine Bawden, New York, NY.
Burial will be at Noon on Wednesday, March 20, 2019 at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Nicholas will lie in state and the family will receive friends from 6:30 until 8:00 P.M. Tuesday, March 19, 2019 at Piper Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made in Nick’s name and sent in care of the funeral home.

    Sharon (Davis) Pierce (Class of 1960) is having serious health problems.  Her husband - Mike - is home taking care of her & Hospice is being called into their home at Paulden, AZ  Wednesday to see if they can help out. Paul Borcherding (17) On Presidents List

Paul Borcherding of Rossville was on the President's List for the fall 2018 semester at Allen County Community College.  The President's List is for students achieving a 4.0 GPA.  Paul is a sophomore majoring in Music Education and plans to attend Washburn University next year.

Linda Kelsey (62) Wise Passes Away

Linda Kelsey Wise, passed away on Tuesday, February 26, 2019. She is now our angel in heaven alongside her parents watching over us.

Linda was born in Rossville, Kansas to Scott and Faye Kelsey on September 18, 1944. She graduated from The University of Kansas in 1966 and loved her Jayhawks. She was a wonderful stay at home mom who provided unconditional love and guidance. Being a mother was her most rewarding job. After her children were grown she worked a number of years at St. Anthony’s Bone and Joint Hospital in Oklahoma City and later as a hospice nurse where she touched lots of families. She was a friend to many and loved by all. There has never been a more amazing mother, grandmother, daughter, sister and friend.

Linda’s nurturing and compassionate nature called her to volunteer at Project 66 Food Pantry in Edmond and was an active member of Crossings Community Church in Oklahoma City.

Linda is survived by her son, Jereme and Jennifer Wise of Austin, Texas. Daughter, Heidi and Brian Reeder of Edmond, Oklahoma. Brother Doug and Dar Kelsey of Mesa, Arizona. Grandchildren – Keelie Brei of Austin, Texas - Ella Jane and Grady James of Edmond, Oklahoma.

A celebration of her life will be held on March 15, 2019 at 2:00PM – Crossings Community Church, 14600 North Portland Ave. – Oklahoma City, OK 73134

Washburn U. Softball Team Adds 2 Wins

    Washburn added two more wins to their record on Fri, Mar. 8.
    They first defeated Lindenwood  7-5 in which Taylor Kirk from Rossville had one hit, one RBI, and one walk in three at-bats.
    In the nite-cap, they added an  easy 7-2 win as Taylor  had two hits, one run, one RBI in three at-bats.
