Dawgs Picked Over Rock Creek

    The Capital-Journal picks the RHS-Rock Creek game this Friday as one of the top games in NE Ks.  

    Rossville was impressive in its 2020 season-opening clash with Class 1A No. 1 Centralia. Using their wide array of weapons, the Bulldawgs jumped out to a 21-0 lead and rolled to a 42-6 victory that vaulted them to No. 1 in Class 2A. Junior quarterback Torrey Horak ran for 93 yards and three touchdowns and threw for 144 yards and two scores, while Woodrow Rezac and Tyree Sowers accounted for just under 200 yards of total offense and scored a TD each. Rock Creek will make its 2020 debut after having its opener with Silver Lake canceled late last week.

Class Notes: Norton and Garden Plain move into the top-5 in the poll after losses by Nemaha Central and Pittsburg Colgan. Also, Cimarron and Osage City suffered losses. Garden Plain with a big jump after a 14-13 victory versus rival Conway Springs, and Rossville a strong victory versus Centralia, the defending 1A champion. Silver Lake is expected to start in Week 3 after COVID-19 concerns.

Beulah Weeres Passes Away

    On September 4, 2020, Beulah Louella Weeres passed away at age 83 after a brief illness. 
Beulah was born and raised in Saskatchewan, Canada. She lived on a farm and had eight siblings. It was a hard but good life.
    Beulah married in 1957 to Vince Weeres. They had six children. Two sons have preceded her in death, Steven and Paul Weeres, who resided in Canada. Her husband, Vincent, also preceded her. She is survived by four children: Michael Weeres: Kitimat, B.C., Canada, Brent Weeres: Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada, Leane VanderPutten: Rossville, KS and Janice Weeres: Rossville, KS. She is also survived by 28 grandchildren and 43 great-grandchildren.
Beulah lived a very full life…
    After her marriage, in her twenties and early thirties, she worked as a Nurse’s Aide for 13 years at the Grey Nun’s Hospital in Regina, Canada. She did not have her driver’s license so she would walk the mile to and from work. They were poor, so the money was needed. She spent the years after she left her career, caring for her growing children.
A few years following their move to the U.S.A. (in 1990), at the age of 62, after studying and working hard, Beulah received a Doctorate in Naturopathy. She used these talents, along with her giving and generous heart, to care deeply for her family and neighbors. She did this not out of obligation or for monetary gain, but because of who she was. She was always the first to offer help. No matter how ill she felt herself, or what worries she was experiencing, she always ensured that every person who crossed her threshold left feeling safer, healthier, and happier.
Beulah’s Catholic Faith was her driving force in everything she did. It was the foundation of her life and she spread that hope and joy to whoever asked her for advice….and there were many. The daily Rosary and daily Mass was her lifeline. She arose early in the morning to pray and each day was dotted with conversations with the Blessed Mother and her Beloved Son. Beulah’s faith, perseverance and devotion will echo through her children and grandchildren and the Faith that they also carry in their hearts.
    Beulah spent her remaining seven years in an apartment attached to the home of Vince and Leane (her daughter) VanderPutten in Rossville. Those remaining days she shared her heart and her home to her family and friends and her family took loving care of her. She was surrounded by her loved ones at home, singing and praying, as she crossed the threshold into the next life….
Rest in peace Mom/Grandma/Great-Grandma. We love you and you will be greatly missed!
 

Dawgs Move To #1 Ranking

The Capital-Journal top 5 teams in 2A  moved around a bit as a result of the Nemaha Central loss to Holton.  In 1A, Centrailia dropped from #1 to #3 because of their 42-6 loss to Rossville.    Silver Lake didn't play because of Covid-19 issues at the school.

Notes — Defending 2A champion thought it had its game with visiting Holton won when the Thunder blocked a last-second field goal attempt on third down to preserve a 13-12 victory. But Holton was given a chance to re-kick and nailed the game-winner for a 15-13 win. Nemaha has appealed the outcome with the KSHSAA.

Rossville Wallops Centrailia 42-6

Rossville had all kinds of fun at Centralia’s expense Friday night. In a matchup of highly ranked teams — Rossville began the year No. 2 in Class 2A while Centralia opened ranked No. 1 in Class 1A after winning last year’s state championshikp — the Bulldawgs took control in the first half and never let up in an impressive 42-7 rout.

With preseason 2A No. 1 Nemaha Central falling 15-13 to Holton on a last-second field goal, Rossville will move to No. 1 next week. And the Bulldawgs looked every bit deserving of owning that ranking.

Bo Reeves Player Watch

At one point Rossville’s potential quarterback of the future, Reeves has instead settled in quite nicely as the Bulldawgs’ go-to receiver over the past two seasons. After having 24 catches for 381 yards and four touchdowns as a sophomore, Reeves upped his production to 26 catches for 512 yards and eight touchdown catches last year as a junior, helping Rossville to a 7-3 mark. He’s also run for 317 yards over the past two seasons and defensively has picked off three passes, earning All-Mid-East League honors.

Centrailia Football Game

Dawgs up 28-6 at the half against Centrailia.
In the first quarter,  the lone TD was a Horak to Reeves pass of 27 yards.
In the second quarter,  the scoring started with a Horak to Woody Rezac pass for 41 yards.
After Cory Catron recovered a fumble, Tyree Sowers ran for a 41 yd TD.
With 3:37 left in the half, Centrailia completed a pass into the end zone,  but their 2 pt conversion attempt failed.
With 3:18 left in the half, Torry Horak had a 53 yd run to bring the score up to 28-6
The Panthers had a nice drive going but Kaden Brown cut it short with an interception at :34.

There was no scoring in the third quarter.
In the fourth,  Torrey Horak scored on a 3 yard run with 10:44 remaining. 
With 6:44 left, he scored on a 16 yard run.
Reeves was 4/5 on PATs and was sending kickoffs almost to the goal line.
Final score 42-6.

Dawg Runners Win Mission Valley Meet

Congratulations to the Dawg XC Runners competing at Mission Valley yesterday, Sept 3.

The Rossville ladies brought home the team championship, led by a 2nd place finish from Julia Streit. Other top-ten medalists included Amelia Foster (4th) and Cassie Fund (6th).

The boy's team was led by Sam Twombly who finished 5th.

Makenna Hensley and Gabe Fund ran their first junior high 2-mile race as 7th graders, and Gabe brought home a 3rd place medal.

Class 2A is the most wide open of all Kansas high school football title races. Rossville is the favorite but only just; the Bulldogs haven’t won a title since 2016 when they won three straight. Nemaha Central beat Rossville in lsat year’s regional round 29-21 on its way to the 2A crown.

Dawgs Face 1A Champ Centrailia

The 2019 football season couldn’t have gone much better for Centralia

The Panthers went 12-1, rolled to another Twin Valley League title and captured the program’s fourth state championship in the last 10 years with an 18-14 win over Smith Center in the Class 1A state title game.

Only one thing kept it from being a perfect season. A 28-8 loss to Rossville in the season opener.

Indeed, while the season-opening loss to Rossville might have been the only blemish on the Panthers’ record a year ago, it also might have been a catalyst for their run to another championship. coach Glatczak and his staff learned plenty about their team in that loss and the changes they made coming out, not to mention the competition they saw from the Bulldawgs, paid big dividends the rest of the season.

Centralia gets a shot at a little payback Friday night when Rossville comes to town to open the 2020 season. Both teams begin the season with serious title aspirations — Centralia is ranked No. 1 in Class 1A, while Rossville is ranked No. 2 in Class 2A.

Rossville finished last season 7-3, falling in the second round of the Class 2A playoffs 29-21 in overtime to eventual champion Nemaha Central. The Bulldawgs return most of the key figures off last year’s squad, including their entire cast of skill players, and are looking to win their first state championship since claiming three straight Class 3A crowns from 2014-16.
