Torrey leads the passing stats with 35 completions in 63 attempts for 560 yards in the first six games.

With a team made up mostly of freshmen and sophomores,  the future looks bright for the Rossville girls.

War On 24 Coming Friday

There’s never really a question about whether anyone from Rossville or Silver Lake is ready for their annual War on 24 showdown.

That’s simply the nature of the rivalry. Particularly when both teams are undefeated, as they are this year, and ranked No. 1 and 2 in Class 2A, as they are this year.

But when No. 1 Rossville plays host to No. 2 Silver Lake on Friday night, both teams are truly ready for the test they will receive. After three straight weeks of minimal challenges, a showdown of this magnitude is exactly what both need with the postseason only two weeks away.

Delbert Faulk Passes Away

Delbert E. Faulk Jr., 85, of Rossville, passed away Tuesday, October 13, 2020.

He was born August 31, 1935, in Topeka, Kansas, the son of Delbert and Nettie (Jacobs) Faulk. He graduated from Dover High School in 1954. He was a US Army veteran, serving from1957 until 1960. After his time in the service, he worked at Rossville Truck and Tractor until 1967, and then worked at Santa Fe Railroad as a machinist for 30 years, retiring on October 29, 1997.

Mr. Faulk was a member of the Rossville Presbyterian Church, American Legion Post #31 in Rossville, and a 49 year member of I.A.M. Union.

On December 21, 1954, he married Leona Badura in Rossville. She preceded him in death on September 28, 2020. They were married 65 years and had five children: Marlene (Tim) Coder, Emilie (Mike) Fangman, Dale (Brenda) Faulk, Dean (Oliver) Faulk, and Jewelie (Brad) Ullery. Other survivors include grandchildren, Scott (Ali), Chris, Jennifer (Rodney), James (Deirdre), Laura (Matt), Aaron (Nick), Luke (Jenna), Josh (Abby), Trey (Shellie), Audrey (John), Sara (Mitch) and Holly (Skip); great-grandchildren, Gabe, Ashlyn, Kyler, Kolbi, Evelyn, Breanne, Ayden, Jocelyn, Rylee, Mercy, Avery, Gabby, Karah, Maelee, Reagan, Emma, and Andy; and three siblings Nadine Kelly, Willis Faulk, and Linda (Ken) McDonald.

Delbert and Leona enjoyed camping and traveling; one of their last trips on a motorcycle to New England to see the fall colors.

He was an avid woodworker, making several items for their home, in addition to gifts for his family, from a baby cradle and crib to a china hutch, as well as toys and stepstools for his grandkids and great-grandkids.

He also enjoyed hunting, mostly duck and pheasant, making yearly hunting trips to western Kansas with friends and family; fishing, birdwatching, and working jigsaw puzzles. He did many remodeling projects for neighbors.

As his children grew up, he strongly encouraged music, and began accompanying them on his accordion while they sang at church and family reunions. He and Leona never missed an opportunity to hear their children sing.

Funeral services will be 10 am Saturday, October 17, 2020 at Parker-Price Funeral Home, 245 NW Independence Ave, Topeka. Burial with military honors will follow at Czech-Moravian Cemetery, north of Rossville. Visitation will be 5-7pm Friday, October 16, 2020 at the funeral home.

Silver Lake Volleyball

    The Lady Dawgs split their match with Silver Lake on Oct. 13, winning the first 26-24, 26-24 but then losing 21-25, 25-22, 22-25.  Rossville is 6-2 in the MEL and 22-6 overall.

    Rock Creek took over sole possession of first place in the Mid-East  with its sweep of St. Marys on Tuesday. Rossville's split with Silver Lake caused the Lady Dawgs to fall a match behind the Mustangs in the standings.

Notes: The key 2A game of Maur Hill and Nemaha Central never occurred as Maur Hill went into COVID-19 quarantine. Garden Plain won at Kingman, 14-10, in a thrilling district game when Kingman nearly scored late. Osage City won at Wellsville, 45-20, and has quietly delivered a massive offensive turnaround. OC is second in 2A scoring offense behind Rossville with only a 22-15 home loss to Lyndon in Week 1. The huge game this week in the annual War on 24 with Rossville and Silver Lake, both in the same district. An upset occurred when winless Wellsville beat undefeated Eureka, though Wellsville plays in a much tougher league. Thomas More Prep is 5-1 and has the first winning season in nine years. With another win, Haven will have its first winning record since ’01.

Torrey Horak Video On WIBW

 ROSSVILLE, Kan. (WIBW) - This is the Horak experience. Big plays are bound to happen.

And that name has been dazzling the Rossville gridiron for years.

“Those days were different, man." Horak said. "There was a lot of fun to watch those guys play football.”

Torrey Horak - a junior QB with the Bulldogs - always knew football was where he belonged.

“As soon as I started playing the game," Horak said. "I fell in love with it.”

He saw the blue print for success from home, just watching his older brothers play.

“It’s like I was born into it.” Horak said.

Horak’s two older brothers - Tucker and Thatcher - were vital members of the 2014 and 2015 back to back Rossville state championship winning teams.

“Yeah, those guys, they were definitely our idols growing up," Horak said. "I mean, especially my older brothers. I mean, I always looked up to them, but it was just, you look at those guys differently when they’re up there winning like that.”

Torrey’s adding to the Horak legacy.

“It’s obviously my family,” Horak said. “It’s been a big name, especially around here, but I’m not really trying to leave my Mark or anything. I’m just doing what it takes to get it done. Obviously the ultimate goal is to go win a state championship with my guys.”

Fiedler Nominated For Area Athlete Of Week

 JAYCEE FIEDLER, ROSSVILLE VOLLEYBALL PLAYER

Fiedler led the Bulldawgs to a big Mid-East League sweep of Wabaunsee that earned Rossville a tie atop the league standings. Fiedler had six kills in the first match and then came back with 11 kills in the second as the Bulldawgs swept both matches in straight sets.

Dr. Robert Stach Passes Away

Dr. Stach passed away on October 11, 2020 at 3:30 p.m. at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Silver Lake, Kansas and grew up on a farm north of Rossville, Kansas. He attended Rossville High School. Dr. Stach graduated from Kansas State University with a BS in Agriculture and a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Stach practiced in the Raymore/Belton area for forty-six years. He was a member of the AVMA, KVMA, MVMA, and KCVM. He was a past Board of Director, Vice President and President of the KCVM.

He was preceded in death by his father Benjamin and his brother Benny.

He is survived by his wife, Marilyn Stach of the home, his mother Arlis Stach, three sons Ryan (Jessica), Justin and Chris, three step daughters, Kim Taylor, Michelle Perkins (Greg) and Kelly Gebauer (Michael), ten grandchildren Arlis, Eli and Chris, Zach and Josh, Kaylyne and Trenton, Taylor, Keaton and Lauren and one great grandchild Drayden. He is also survived by his sister Sherri Gannon (Vern) and many nieces and nephews.

A burial service at Czech Moravian Cemetery in Rossville, Kansas at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to Kansas City Hospice and Palliative Care, 1500 Meadow Lake Pkwy, Ste 200 Kansas City, Missouri 64114.
