Charles Droegemeier Passes Away
Rossville—Charles G. “Chuck” Droegemeier Sr., died Saturday, January 9, 2021, at the Rossville Healthcare & Rehab Center.
He was born to Carl and Viola Farrington Droegemeier at Ellsworth County, Kansas, on April 2, 1936. The family moved to Burlingame in 1942, where “Chuck” attended rural grade school and graduated from Burlingame High School in 1954. He worked horses and on a dairy farm while he was in high school.
Chuck worked in construction for three years; he then went to work for the City of Topeka in the water department, where he worked for 39 years. Chuck was self-employed as a part-time house painter for 43 years. He had lived in Topeka for 18 years, Maple Hill for 25 years, and then Paxico before moving to Rossville. He was a member of the Rossville Christian Church and the Topeka City Retirees Club.
On January 1, 1957, he and Janice “Jan” Colstrom were married in Osage City. She preceded him in death. He later married Nona Smith on September 21, 2006, in Rossville; she preceded him in death. Chuck was also preceded by his parents, a sister, Mary Escatel, brothers, Jim and Ralph Droegemeier, and son-in-laws, William Ronsse and Larry Arensman. Chuck then married Helen Decker on June 25, 2010, in Rossville. She survives.
Other survivors include a son, Charles G. “Chuck” (Lynn) Droegemeier Jr., Maple Hill, two daughters, Terri Ronsse and Connie Arensman Topeka; a brother, Gerald Droegemeier, Topeka.; five grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be at 1:00 P.M. Saturday, January 23, 2021, at Piper Funeral Home in St. Marys. The inurnment will be in the Maple Hill Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Rossville Christian Church and sent in care of Piper Funeral Home, 714 Maple Street, St. Marys, Kansas 66536.

James Burkett (71) Passes Away
James “Jim” N. Burkett, age 68, of Topeka, KS, passed away on Saturday, January 9, 2021 at The University of Kansas Health System-St. Francis Campus.
Jim was born the son of James C. and Anna Laura (James) Burkett on October 4, 1952 in Topeka, KS. He was a 1971 graduate from Rossville High School. He served in the United States Military. Jim worked for the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company for 24 years. He enjoyed fishing and riding his motorcycle. Jim will be remembered for always willing to help and lend a hand to anyone in need.
Survivors include his children; son, Derek Burkett and his wife Heather; daughter, Racheal Czirr Alexander and her husband Jeff; daughter, Jennifer Bertels and her husband Loren; daughter, Tawyna Butler and her husband Lee; son, Jason Gillenwater; significant other, Margie Wheeler; sister, Donna Bissonnette and her husband Fred; 23 grandchildren, Gavin, Tre, Jade, A.J., Brooklynn, Jazlin, Jade, Evan, Lindsay, Drake, Christopher, Jessie, Breanna, Colby, Riley, Claire, Cassandra, Adam, Jayden, Stella, Daniel, Paul and Joshua.
He was preceded in death by his parents; grandson, Colby McGrath; step-mother, Helen Burkett; grandparents, Jessie Lee and Medie Sue Burkett.
Cremation has taken place. A memorial visitation will be held on Saturday, January 23, 2021 from 1-3:00 P.M., at the Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home.

Schaefer Selected to All-State Honor Band
A hearty congratulations to Elizabeth Schaefer (A Junior at Rossville Jr/Sr High School) who, despite the many setbacks of auditioning for the All-State Band during a pandemic, has been selected as the 1st Chair Flute Player for the 1-4A Kansas All-State Honor Band.

Late Ottawa U. Rally Nips Ks Wesleyan
Two Caila Hill (SO/Rossville, Kan.) free throws gave the KWU Coyotes a 56-53 with 2:40 left in the game. Ottawa took control, though, by scoring the next nine points en route to a 14-5 closing burst. The Braves outscored KWU 26-14 in the quarter. The final score was Ottawa 67, KWU 61.
Caila Hill scored 13 pts on 4 of o8 shooting and 5 of 6 free throws made. She also had 5 rebounds. Amanda Hill scored 12 points on 5 of 15 shooting, including two 3 pts goals.

Lucinda Mitchell Passes Away
Rossville—Lucinda C. “Cindy” Mitchell, 63, passed away Tuesday, January 12, 2021, near Rossville, from injuries she suffered in an auto accident. The love of her life, Chris, was injured in the same accident.

Sean Bird Receives Award
Washburn University’s Sean Bird, associate dean of university libraries and the Center for Student Success and Retention, was recently presented a national "I Love My Librarian" award by the American Library Association. Bird earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Washburn University in 1991, a Master of Arts in English from the University of Oklahoma in 1994, a Master of Library Science degree from Emporia State University in 2008 and is a certified Kansas library administrator. He began teaching English for Washburn as an adjunct faculty member in 1995, becoming an instructional librarian in 2010 at Washburn University’s Mabee Library, and was promoted to assistant dean of university libraries and the Center for Student Success and Retention in 2014. Bird also served as the director of the Rossville community library from 2008 to 2010.
