Rossville Sectional Football Preview

D3 No. 1 Rossville (10-0) vs. D1 No. 1 Riverton (8-2)

Last week: Rossville defeated D4 No. 2 Nemaha Central, 32-12.

This week, Rossville will host another No. 1 seed in Riverton, a program three hours away enjoying their best year under fifth-year head coach Johnny Mallatt. 

Although Rossville's staff knew they've been in the postseason in the recent past, the game plan took shape over the past week as they broke down the film. 

Averaging 32.1 points per game and giving up 14.7, Rossville head coach Derick Hammes pointed out the possession, run-oriented offense that was led by a big line up front. 

"As a unit, the line has good size, moves people and they fit off of them," said Hammes. "Their fullback is a good runner, think that's a go-to back for them.

"Their style of play is going to lean towards a possession game, our style of play is the opposite. Two ends of the spectrum so to speak, that'll be an important part of the game. Are we going to have a high possession game or is it going to be a grind it out type game?"

Defensively, similar to last week, Hammes said Riverton can throw multiple looks on that side of the ball but it was a new scheme to prepare for, nothing that the size o the defensive lineman stood out as well.

He also added they can cover space well, and attacking space is something Rossville's offense likes to do.

Similar to last week, and any game, Hammes pointed out the need to protect the football but added a few more keys to a victory.

Keys to the game from Hammes: When you’re run-oriented it doesn’t mean you can’t pass. Play action off the runs, our ability to take care of play-action will be key.

Silver Lake will host undefeated Wellsville, a program about an hour away, that averages 43.9 points per game and gives up just 6.4.

Offensively, they're led by junior running back Nash Money, who has 1,497 yards and 29 touchdowns on the season. The team, as a whole, has rushed for 2,788 yards and 45 touchdowns.

Corey Catron Steps Up

 ROSSVILLE, Kan. (WIBW) -Corey Catron has been a star in the backfield.

“I got all the confidence in the world in him.” Derick Hammes, Rossville head football coach, said.

His number was called to step up when another Dawg went down.

“Him coming out late at halftime kind of shocked us all, but kind of had to get my mind right with going in at quarterback and try to help out our team as much as possible.” Corey Catron, Rossville quarterback/running back, said.

In the War on 24, Rossville’s electric quarterback Torrey Horak went down with an injury. In his place, Catron took control.

“You’ve got to trust the guys around you and trust that they know what they’re doing and our line helped out a big part with that game,” Catron said. “After those first few drives, we really stepped it up and decided to start playing again.”

The running back turned quarterback full time. And Catron’s helped to keep the Bulldogs undefeated.

Riverton High is Next Dawg Opponent

The Dawgs will play Riverton this Friday night at Rossville in the next step in the 2A playoffs.

Amanda and Caila Hill At KS Wesleyan

Sisters Amanda and Caila Hill from Rossville were in Kansas Wesleyan's 78-62 win over Evangel U. on Nov. 6.  Amanda had 11 points and 4 rebounds in 30 minutes as a starting forward.  Caila had 5 points, 4 rebounds, 1 steal, and 2 assists in 21 minutes of reserve duty.

D3 No. 1 seed Rossville remained perfect, improving to 10-0 with a 32-12 win over the D4 No. 2 seed Nemaha Central at home. 

Rossville senior Corey Catron had 254 all-purpose yards, going 11-19 for 149 yards through the air with a touchdown and interception while adding 105 yards on 30 carries for three touchdowns. 

Senior Tagen Kippes had three catches for 56 yards to lead the team while Kaden Brown added two for 27 yards and the touchdown catch. 

Defenseively, Catron (13) and senior Raphael Cooney (4) led the team in total tackles while senior Tagen Kippes had an interception. 

Rossville will host D1 No. 1 seed Riverton (8-2) on Nov. 12 in the Sectional round, Riverton beat D2 No. 2 seed Osage City on Friday, 28-22, in overtime.

Jerome Werick Passes Away

Jerome Patrick Werick, 38, passed away Thursday, November 4, 2021, at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City.

Patrick was born to Kevin and Carol Ekman Werick in Topeka, on August 18, 1983.  He graduated from St. Marys Academy in 2001.  After years of travel and doing odd-jobs here and there, he studied at Kansas State University, Manhattan, and earned a BS in 2009, with a major in journalism and a minor in creative writing.

Patrick was the Vice President and Director of Marketing for Roll Products in St. Marys.  He was a member of Assumption Chapel.    

In February of 2011, Patrick and Amanda Perry were united in marriage at Assumption Chapel in St. Marys.  He was a doting husband and father, and his wife and children were the love of his life.  She survives of the home.

Nemaha Central/Rossville VB Dawgfight

Rossville hosted Nemaha Central in the second round of state playoffs.  The first half was pretty even with Rossville having a 9-6 halftime lead,   But after Kaden Brown scored mid-way through the third quarter,  Rossville dominated the rest of the game building the lead in the fourth to become Regional Champs.

Volleyball Team Leaders

The Lady Dawgs had a successful volleyball season competing with some larger schools and finished with a  30-9  record advancing to the second round at their regional.

Sophomore Kinsey Perine led the team in Kills with 437 tootal, or 4.9 per set.  Senior Briar Gillum was second with 289 and sophomore Kinley Porter had 253.

Junior Brinley Dyche led serving with 66 aces in 415 attempts.

Senior Briar Gillum led the team in blocks with 59 (40 were solo).  Kinsey Perine was second wih 29.  

Senior Caylee Douglas led with assists picking up 860.

Junior Brinley Dyche had 444 digs this season to lead the team and has had over 1,000 in her career.   Kinsey Perine was second with 277 and sophomoe Ryan Leathers had 267.

With several of the most outstanding players being sophomores,  Rossville should have some outstanding volleyball teams.

Michael Paulson Passes Away

 With heavy hearts, we announce the death of Michael Paulsen of Rossville, Kansas, born in Manhattan, Kansas, who passed away on November 3, 2021 at the age of 52. Family and friends are welcome to leave their condolences on his memorial page at the Piper Funeral Home web page and share them with the family.

He was loved and cherished by many people including : his wife Marian Paulsen (Zeller); his children, Michaela Raye Paulsen (Wade) and Bradley Michael Paulsen; his mother Carolyn Paulsen (Rossville); and his siblings, Kim York and Claude "Rusty" Paulsen (Patty). He was also cherished by nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held on Monday, November 8th 2021 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Piper Funeral Home (714 Maple St, St Marys, KS 66536). A rosary will be held on Monday, November 8th 2021 at 7:00 PM at the same location. A mass of christian burial will be held on Tuesday, November 9th 2021 at 10:00 AM at the St. Stanislaus Catholic Church (703 Main St, Rossville, KS 66533).

If desired, memorial contributions may be made to the Paulsen Children's Education Fund and sent in care of Piper Funeral Home, 714 Maple Street, St. Marys, Kansas 66536.

Nemaha Central Visits Rossville Fri Nite

 D3 No. 1 Rossville (9-0) vs. D4 No. 2 Nemaha Central (7-2) 

Last week: Rossville defeated D4 No. 4 Republic County, 56-0, and Nemaha Central defeated D3 No. 3 Pleasant Ridge, 48-14 

Nemaha Central runs a 20 personnel offense that looks to establish run, with Rossville head coach Derick Hammes saying he was impressed with their running back and offensive line.

Defensively, Rossville will be facing a 3-3 stack defense that has the ability to give teams multiple looks.

"My assessment is, this is the strength of their football team," said Hammes. "Their size and length pops, they're active and they get to the ball. Just a good defensive football team from that perspective. Physically they can control the line of scrimmage and have a good core of linebackers that run to the ball."

Keys to the game from Hammes:  Like any playoff football game, if you don’t win turnovers, taking care of the football is imperative and being able to handle the multiple looks they can give us. The preparation part this week will be big for us to block multiple fronts and pick up blitzes. They're pretty unique in how they can do that in comparison to what we've seen this year."
