Horgan and Brecheisen Honored by KWA

   RHS Girls Wresting Coach Courtney Horgan has been named 4-1A Girls Wrestling Coach of the Year by the Kansas Wrestling Coaches Association.   Curt Brecheisen was named 4-1A Girls Wrestling Administrator of the Year by the same organization. 

Nina Lafrinere Passes Away

 Nina Ruth Lafrinere, passed away Monday, March 6, 2023, at Rossville Healthcare and Rehab.

She was born January 7, 1951, in Grant Township, MI, the daughter of Steven and Fay (Crippen) Lafrinere. 

Nina was a passionate dog fan and had an immense love for animals. She was proud to have been instrumental in founding the Leavenworth Animal Welfare Society (LAWS), which serves to reduce the pet overpopulation, find a home for every pet, and to end to euthanasia of adoptable animals. Nina was a hard worker and enjoyed gardening, motorcycles, and spending time with her family.

​Survivors include two sons, Jesse (Julie) Sherer, Topeka, and Steven Lafrinere, Kansas City, MO; two sisters, Sharin Clairmont and Yvonne Lafrinere; a brother, Dennis Lafrinere; and five grandchildren, Ariel, Alexander, Alivia, Madison, and Jaxon.

Family will receive friends beginning at 2:00 PM Sunday, March 19, 2023, at Piper Funeral Home followed by a memorial service at 2:30 PM. Charla (Teske) (70) Diederich Passes Away


Charla R. Diederich, 71, passed away Saturday, March 4, 2023 at the Midland Hospice House in Topeka.

Charla was born March 4, 1952, in Onaga, the daughter of Lawrence A. and Vera “Bernadine” Cameron Teske.  She was raised in the Delia community and graduated from Rossville High School in 1970.  She married Russell G. Freel in Vallejo, CA.  After living there six years they moved to St. Marys. They would later divorce.

Charla worked at the B&B, the CO-OP hardware store and in the CO-OP offices.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Larry Teske.

Survivors include her son, Donny (Whitney) Freel, Rossville, their children, Bryson & Nolan; her sister, JuDee Turner, St. Marys, two nieces, Deana (Robert) Core, St. Marys, and Lynn (Zach) Haver, Omaha, NE; longtime family friend, Beverly Rogers.

A Celebration of Life will be from 10:00 A.M. until 12:00 P.M. Saturday, March 11, 2023, at the St. Marys Senior Center.

Private inurnment will be in the Valley View Cemetery, St. Marys.  Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society and sent in care of the Piper Funeral Home.

Dennis Clayton Passes Away

    Dennis L. “Denny” Clayton, 79, passed away Thursday, March 2, 2023, at his home after a short brave battle with cancer.
    He was born September 10, 1943 in Sioux City, Iowa, the son of Donald and Maude “Blanche” Hickmon Clayton.  Denny graduated from Sloan, IA, High School.
    He was a pipe fitter retired out of Local 441.  Denny loved his family. He enjoyed reading and fishing, especially with his brothers Steve, Big Donnie, Kevin, EV, his good friend Ron. He also liked to sit and have a beer with family and friends. Denny had a great sense of humor and a soft heart.  He was married to Judy Lakings, they divorced and remained friends.
    He was preceded in death by his father and brother Greg (EV). His in-laws, Dale and Carol Luttig, and his brother-in-law Dave Luttig.
    He was married to Cathy Luttig in Emmett on April 28, 1984.  She survives at their home.
    Other survivors include his mother, Blanche (Roger) Jenkins, Sloan, IA, his children, Donald (Sharon) Clayton, Omaha, NE, Christine (Will) Akins, Lincoln, NE, and Amanda Clayton, Rossville; siblings, Donna Zuetlau, Sloan, IA, Donald Clayton, Jackson, NE, Kevin (Cathy) Clayton, Salix, IA, Roxanne (Bob) Hyden, Galveston, IN, Jan (Steve) Hubert, Salix, IA; grandchildren, Megan (Paul) Thole, Samuel (Kayla) Akins, Matthew Akins and Chloe Clayton; great-grandchildren, Jaxon, Zachary and Belle Thole. He also had many nieces, nephews and cousins that he loved to tease.
    Memorial services will be at 11:00 A.M. Boys Substate Basketball

   The RHS boys basketball team lost their first game at the 3A substate tournament to Bishop Ward by a 56-32 score. 
    Rossville finished the season 7- 13 overall and 3-7 in the MEL.

Girls Substate Basketball

    The Silver Lake girls earned their second straight trip to the 3A state tournament.  They defeated #8 seed Royal Valley 7-32, #4 Maur Hill 63-28 and #3 Rossville 46-26 in the championship game. 

    Rossville defeated Perry Lecompton 66-14, Jeff West 60-32 before losing the game to Silver Lake.

Willis Clark Passes Away At 93

 Willis “Wayne” Clark, 93, of Paxico passed away on Sunday, February 26th. Wayne was born to Fred & Mabel(Miller) on December 23rd, 1929 in Maple Hill, Kansas.  He attended Maple Hill High School, graduating in 1947. Wayne served in the Signal Corps of the United States Army Reserve for 12 years. In 1952, Wayne married Darlene O’Donnell in Rossville. Together they had two children.

Wayne worked as a maintenance mechanic for DuPont for 35 years. He retired 1985. He then worked as a maintenance mechanic for Flexel until 1992. Wayne will be remembered for his hobbies of fishing, hunting, and raising cattle. Every Tuesday, he would go to the Sale Barn at St. Mary’s.

Preceding in passing are his parents; brother, Russell; two sisters, Ava Nash & Sybil Deiter; grandson Eli Clark; great-granddaughter Grace Clark; and his wife of 67 years, Darlene.

Surviving Wayne are two sons, Philip (Susan) Clark of Paxico, KS & Douglas (Ginny) Clark of Tecumseh, KS. Also surviving Wayne are 9 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from 9 to 10 a.m. on Friday, March 3rd, at Davidson Funeral Home, 1035 N Kansas Avenue. A Funeral Service will follow. Burial will take place at Bethlehem Cemetery in Paxico. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Bethlehem Cemetery.

Mid-East And Big 7 Leagues May Merge

Wabaunsee and Rock Creek are planning to leave the Mid East League that was formed back in 1948.

Four teams are not a viable league.  Merging with another is a likely result, and the Big Seven seems a likely destination.

Girls Defeat Rock Creek In Double OT

    The RHS girls basketball team finished their regular season on Feb 21 with a double overtime 61-52 win over Rock Creek.  The girls are 14-6 overall and 5-5 in the MEL. and begin post-season play with the Rgionals starting Feb. 27.

    The team was led in scoring by Emma Mitchell with 15.4 points per game and Rylee Dick at 12.6 ppg.  Shyanne Haehm led the team in 3 point shooting hitting at  50%  success.  Emma Mitchell led in free throw percentage with 82.1%.  Kinsey Perine led the team in rebounds (6.5), steals (6.5) and assists (7.6).
