Grandview U. and Isaiah Luellen Win NAIA Titles

PARK CITY, Kansas – Grand View University of Des Moines, IA. powered to its third straight NAIA Men’s National Championships title on Saturday, led by three individual champions and 12 All-Americans.

Grand View, which entered as the No. 1 ranked team, scored 209 points, ahead of No. 2 ranked Life with 154 points. Placing third was Menlo, with 95.5 points.

The 5th year senior took the mat for the final match of his career. Isaiah Luellen eyed Kyle Homet of Life University. Luellen landed a shot early, resulting in a takedown and an early first-period lead. Luellen would get charged a stall call, and Homet would see his first point on the board. Luellen would begin to taste his title as he recorded an escape to go up 4-1, a late shot by Homet wouldn't land as Luellen earned his first title after four National Tournament appearances. During his decorated career, Luellen earned 5th, 4th, 3rd, and 2nd  and will end his tenure with a final placing of first at 184 pounds

 ROSSVILLE GIRLS 38, RILEY COUNTY 28

Riley County put up a battle against Mid-East League rival Rossville for most of the way before the Bulldawgs clinched a 38-28 Class 3A sub-state quarterfinal victory down the stretch Tuesday at Rossville.

Rossville led by just an 11-10 margin at the end of the opening quarter and 18-15 at halftime.

The Falcons were still within four points (29-25) at the start of the fourth quarter before Rossville held a 9-3 scoring edge the rest of the way.

Freshman Nora Burdiek paced Rossville (18-3) with 13 points while sophomore Rylee Dick added 11 points with two 3-pointers.

Rossville will face off against St. Marys in a 7:30 p.m. sub-state semifinal Friday night at Riley County.

Lady Dawgs Defeat Riley Co. In 3A sub-State

The Rossville Girls defeated Riley County at Rossville in the first round of the SWub-State3 tournament.

Rossville will play St. Marys Friday night at Riley Co.  St Marys upset the number two seed Nemaha Central36-29 on Tue night.

Dawgs Defeat Riley County In Sub-State Opener

The Rossville boys clamped down on visiting Riley County Monday night, advancing to the semifinals in the Class 3A Riley County sub-state with a defensive effort, 50-37.

Rossville, which hadn’t won more than nine games in nearly a decade, improved to 15-6 and moved on to a matchup with Nemaha Central at 7:30 p.m. Thursday night at Riley County.

“The boys are pumped up about it. And why not? We’re doing things in the program that haven’t been done in God knows how long,” said Rossville coach Brandon McDonnell. “As muddy and dirty and unsure as the game was, generally not the way we play, we didn’t quit playing. We still played together.”

Rossville jumped on the visiting Falcons early to establish a 15-6 lead in the opening period. They continued to add on with sophomore Cameron Miller scoring 11 first-half points. The Bulldawgs led 28-17 at the intermission.

No. 3 seed  Rossville High (17-3)  will host  No. 6 seed Riley County (11-8) in the first round of the 3A Sub-state.   Game begins at 7:00 pm atm Rossville.

Barret Lietz Finishes Second At State

Rossville Boys Wrestling team consisted of  seniior  Barret Lietz whose 22 points were sufficient to place Rossville at #27 among the 62 teams entered in the State 321A Tournament on Feb. 24 

 Barret Lietz (36-9) placed 2nd and scored 22.0 team points. In the match for first place,  Luke Fischer (Larned) 46-0 won by tech fall over Barret Lietz (Rossville) 36-9 (TF-1.5 4:08 (15-0))

RHS Girls Wrestling Team Wins State

KSHSAA Girl`s 4A-1A State Championship Results for Rossville HS 

Rosssville placed firat among the 87teams entered in the State Championship.

115 Keera Lacock (37-3) placed 4th and scored 20.0 team points.
120 Kendra Hurla (38-0) placed 1st and scored 29.5 team points.
145 Madelyn Wonnell (34-15) place is unknown and scored 5.0 team points.
155 Hailey Horton (37-4) placed 1st and scored 28.0 team points.

4321A Girls Wrestling Ranking

This week Rossville High has stayed in second place among the rankings for 4321A Girls Wrestling for the weeek of Feb. 22.    Hayley Horton though has moved from 4th to 2nd in the 155# class.  Keera Lacock dropped from 1st to 3rd in the 115# class.

Jack Donovan Sets Scoring Record

 

A 5-foot-11 sophomore guard, Donovan became Rossville's single-season record-holder for made 3-pointers in Friday's 68-34 Mid-East League win over Riley County. Donovan had 14 points with four 3s in Friday's win after scoring 21 points with seven treys in Tuesday's 72-38 league win over Wabaunsee. Donovan now has 55 3-pointers on the season, eclipsing the previous record of 52 set by Matt Buhler in 2009.
