Norma Bennet Passes Away

Norma Jean Bennett, 91, of Rossville, died on Wednesday, July 16, 2025 at Rossville Health and Rehab surrounded by her family.

Norma was born on February 18, 1934, in Lillis, KS the oldest daughter of Leo and Teresa (Skoch) Reicherter. She attended local schools and graduated from Seneca High School.

Soon after graduation, she met Kenneth Bennett and they were married on July 6, 1955, in Topeka, KS at Assumption Catholic Church in Topeka.

Norma and Kenneth lived for many years in the Rossville community and raised their family there. She was a devoted member of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church. Norma loved to sew and enjoyed spending time working in her garden.

Norma is survived by her husband, Kenneth, son, Mark Bennett, 7 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren numerous nieces and nephews, and sisters, Margaret Feldkamp and Connie Kroemer.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her daughter, Yvonne Pollman, two sons, Randy and Dennis Bennett, 2 brothers, Charles and Doug Reicherter, her sister, Mary Ellen Fangman, sister-in-law, Carolyn Reicherter, and her brothers-in-law, Ernie Feldkamp, Norman Kroemer and Richard Fangman.

A funeral mass will be held at 11:15 AM on Tuesday, July 22, 2025 at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church, 703 Main St., Rossville KS 66533. A visitation and rosary will be held an hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will follow in Rossville Cemetery. The family would like to invite friends and relatives to a luncheon at the church after the burial.

Carolyn Jeanine Thompson Passes Away

Carolyn Jeannine Thompson, 89, of St. Mary’s and formerly of rural Topeka, died on Sunday, July 13, 2025 at the St. Marys Manor.

Jeannine was born on December 17, 1935 in Rossville, KS the oldest daughter of six children to Joe and Donic (Patton) Parr. She attended local schools and graduated from Rossville High School in 1953.

Jeannine married Calvin D. Crow in June of 1953 and they were blessed with 4 children; they were later divorced. Later, she married Charles “Ed” Thompson in 1969 in Topeka. This blended union included Ed’s children, Bernie, Lori and Tangela.

Jeannine retired from the State of Kansas in 1998, working in Data Entry. Jeannine was a member of the Citizen Band Potawatomi Indian Tribe.

She loved crafts, crocheting, and spending countless hours gardening and enjoying her grandchildren’s company. She also enjoyed attending Ed’s many performances with his country western band.

Jeannine is survived by her children, Donola (Doug) Fairbanks, Debra (Aaron) Sebring, and Denise (Tim) Hersh; stepchildren, Bernie and Tangela Thompson; grandchildren, Holly (Jeff) Wehner, Melody Baker, Brad (Beth) Fairbanks, Ryan (Melissa) Fairbanks, Nicole (Ben) Long, Amanda Crow, Shannon (Shane) Price, Ashley (Todd) Sage, Josh Hersh, Shelby (Dan) Dellaporta, Brian Thompson, Brent Thompson, Dustin Jones, Logan Crow and Abby Hersh. She had 16 great-grandchildren, 2 step great-grandchildren and 13 great-great grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Joleen Parr and brother, David Parr, and sisters-in-law, Carol Parr Fair and Elizabeth Parr.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her ex-husband, Calvin Crow and former husband, Ed Thompson, three brothers, Thane Parr, Larry Parr, and Clyde Parr, her son, Doug Crow, step-daughter, Lori Davis, granddaughter Janelle Barber and great-granddaughter Grace Long.

A funeral service for Jeannine will be held at 10:00 AM, Friday, July 18 at Piper Funeral Home, 714 Maple St. in St. Marys; a visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow in Rossville Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Marys Manor Activity Fund and may be left in care of Piper Funeral Home, 714 Maple St., St. Marys, KS 66536.

Donald Jacobson Passes Away

Donald J. (“Jake” and “Ole Papa”) Jacobson, 90, passed away on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, at Stormont-Vail Hospital surrounded by his family.

Donald was born on April 12, 1935, in Topeka to John and Catherine (O’Connor) Jacobson. He grew up in the Delia community and attended school in both Sacred Heart and Rossville High School, graduating in 1953.

He met Genevieve Andrick while attending high school in Rossville and they were later married on September 11, 1954, in St. Marys. After high school, Donald served his country honorably in the Kansas National Guard.

Donald worked for a short time as a linemen for the Santa Fe Railroad before taking a permanent job at Goodyear Tire and Rubber factory in Topeka. He worked there for over 40 years, including many years as an area manager in the Banbury department.

After retirement, he pursued one of his bucket list dreams and took a role as an usher for Notre Dame football games. For over 16 years, Donald made the trek to South Bend, IN, and never missed a single home game. He started out at Gate D taking tickets but was promoted to the university level suites where he rubbed elbows with several celebrities including Rudy, Regis Philbin, Muhammad Ali, Jon Bon Jovi, Joe Montana, Chris Christie, Tommy Lasorda and many others.

Donald loved to run and participated in many marathons including the New York, Chicago, Dallas, Kansas City, Pikes Peak, Las Vegas, and several other notable races.

Donald was a devoted family man and loved to spend time with his kids and grandkids. He was seen at most of their sporting and school events and coached sports for many kids teams. He and Genevieve opened their home to a foreign-exchange student, Macy, from Brazil, who they considered like a daughter.

Donald and Genevieve loved to travel, as a couple and with their children, and fondly remember their trips to places like Ireland, several Caribbean islands, London, Wales, and Scotland.

Donald is survived by his wife, Genevieve of Rossville, two sons, David (Connie) Jacobson of Topeka and Thomas (Angela) Jacobson of Lawrence; daughter, Robin (Jeff) Lampe of Topeka; 9 grandchildren, Gabriel (Cindy), Caitrin, Lydia, Locke, Emily, Joe, Dalton (Bailey), Darby, and Sam; and 3 great-grandchildren, Presley, Emma, and Tristan. He is also survived by 2 siblings: sisters, Dorothy Lloyd and Betty Lambotte.

Donald was preceded in death by his parents, siblings, Bobby Jacobson, Johnny Jacobson, Kay Wild, Rosemary Pauley, and Billy Jacobson, daughter, Debi Jacobson, and grandson, Dusty Bronaugh.

A funeral mass will be offered for Donald at 10:00 AM on Friday, July 11, at Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church, 3601 SW 17th St., Topeka, KS 66604 with a luncheon following mass for family friends and guests. Private family burial will take place at Rossville Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to either the Capper Foundation or to Helping Hands Humane Society and may be left in care of Piper Funeral Home, 714 Maple St., St. Marys, KS 66536.

Arlis Stach Passes Away

Arlis Elaine Stach, a beloved figure and lifelong resident of Rossville, Kansas, departed this world on June 13, 2025, at the age of 96. Born on March 14, 1929, in Silver Lake, Kansas, to her parents Fred and Kate (Rankin) Hundertfund. Arlis filled her days with an unwavering spirit of joy and a love for her family that was palpable to all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Arlis wore many hats throughout her life, notably serving as a dedicated homemaker and a farmer's wife. She was the heartbeat of her home, embracing the role with an infectious enthusiasm that made the simplest moments feel extraordinary. Her outgoing and friendly personality drew people to her effortlessly, and she had a remarkable ability to make everyone feel welcomed and loved. She will be missed dearly by all who were touched by her kindness and generosity.

Christmas was a time of year that brought out Arlis's joyous spirit. With great pride, she would lovingly prepare over 400 Christmas cookies, all exquisitely crafted to perfection. Her famous coconut balls were a holiday staple that left a sweet imprint on the hearts of her family. Every Christmas, she insisted that each person open one gift at a time, savoring the moment as she watched the expressions of joy and surprise from her loved ones. These cherished memories reflect not just her passion for the season, but her deep love for her family.

Arlis was known for her adventures to Topeka, where she would treat herself to her favorite hamburger at "The Pad" restaurant. Her laughter, filled with delight, was a melody to those who shared those joyous moments with her. In later years, she garnered the affectionate nickname "Stachie," especially from her granddaughter Nicole and her family, who adored her cooking, particularly her kolaches and jaternice.

Her community involvement included being a longstanding member of the Rossville Presbyterian Church, where she served as an elder, taught Bible school, and contributed to the Rossville Presbyterian Ladies Organization. Arlis also played an integral role in the Glasco, Kansas Bohemian Lodge #9 and dedicated many years as a volunteer at the Czech Moravan Cemetery. Her devotion to her church and community left an indelible mark, showcasing her deep-seated values and commitment to service.

Arlis's final days were spent surrounded by her loving daughter Sherri, granddaughter Nicole, Brett and the wonderful staff at Homestead Assisted Living. This comforting environment allowed her to transition peacefully, enveloped in the love of her family.

She is survived by her daughter Sherri Gannon; granddaughter Nicole (Brett) Wright; grandson Ryan (Jessica) Stach; grandson Chris Stach; daughter-in-law Marilyn Stach; and great-grandchildren Bailee, Kolter, Arlis, Eli, and Chris. Also held dear is her special nephew Richard (Pattie) Hundertfund, her dear friend Myrna along with numerous extended family members who will carry her memory with them forever.

Arlis Elaine Stach leaves behind a rich legacy filled with love, joy, and cherished memories. Her spirit will continue to shine brightly in the hearts of those who knew her. A visitation will be held at Piper Funeral Home in St. Marys, Kansas, on June 18, 2025, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM, followed by a graveside service at Czech-Moravan Cemetery in Rossville on June 19, 2025, at 10:00 AM. May she rest in peace, forever cherished and deeply missed by all. James Mees Passes Away

James Lawrence Mees, a steadfast pillar of the St. Mary’s community, passed away on June 11, 2025, after a sudden illness, leaving behind a legacy of kindness and service. Born on December 23, 1943, in Oakland, California, he later journeyed to Kansas, where he would carve out a life that touched the hearts of many as the second of five children to Lawrence and Mary (Tenbrink) Mees.

After graduating from St. Marys High School in 1962, Jim pursued higher education at Emporia State College, earning a degree in business that would set the foundation for his successful career as a Certified Public Accountant. His professional journey took him through roles in Topeka and Kansas City before he devoted himself to the St. Marys State Bank, where he dedicated many years until his retirement.

Jim’s contributions extended far beyond his professional life. He was a fixture in the St. Mary’s community, eagerly volunteering his time and energy to various initiatives, all while nurturing a deep commitment to the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Virginia Glotzbach Passes Away

Virginia H. Glotzbach, 85, of Paxico, died on Saturday, May 24, 2025 at University of Kansas St. Francis Health Center surrounded by her family.

Sandra Humston Passes Away

Sandra J. "Sandy" Humston, 79, of Topeka, died on Friday, May 23, 2025 at Stormont-Vail Hospital surrounded by her family. 

She was born June 6, 1945, in Emporia, KS, and was the second daughter of Allan C. and Arlene L. Jevons. She graduated from Emporia High School in 1963 and Emporia State Teachers College in 1966, at which point she moved to Topeka to teach kindergarten at Rochester Elementary School. She remained at Rochester for 35 years and even spent a year maintaining a second classroom while teaching kindergarten at both Rochester and Indian Creek Elementary School. Known throughout the community as “Mrs. Humston,” she retired in 2001, continued to get her “kid fix” as a substitute teacher for 15 years and most recently enjoyed helping as a para at Mathis Early Learning Center. She spent a total of 59 years in the Seaman USD 345 School District.

Sandi was married to Edward “Eddie” A. Humston, Jr. on June 1, 1968, in Emporia, KS.  Ed graduated from Rossville High in 1959.   She is survived by her husband Edward, Silver Lake/Topeka; daughter Kristi R. Humston, Shawnee, KS; and grandchildren Talin Frey (Madison Bruhns), Meriden, KS; and Kaitlin Torres and Tristan Torres, Shawnee. She was preceded in death by her parents and sister Marcia (Frank) Arndt, Olpe, KS. 

David Wiltz Passes Away

Born on July 5, 1951 in Axtell, Kansas, David was the oldest of Vincent and Maxine (Pat) Wiltz’s 7 children. As a very young child, he lived in Sabetha, Kansas and Silver Lake, Kansas. The family moved to St. Marys in 1957 and David spent most of his life there. David attended Immaculate Conception Grade School and graduated from St. Marys High School in 1969. 

He then enrolled in the Manhattan Area Vocational-Technical School where he completed a program in auto mechanics. David worked for many years as a mechanic at the St. Marys Farmers Union Coop and later opened his own auto mechanics business. David had many interests, from the high school rock band he played in to racing cars and teaching karate. He enjoyed camping and fishing and, most of all, singing karaoke, especially songs by Willie Nelson. He also loved animals, particularly cats, and always had at least one as a pet. 

David was preceded in death by his parents, Vince and Pat, and his niece, Lily. He is survived by 5 brothers: Steve Wiltz, Wamego; Mike Wiltz, St. Marys; Dan Wiltz (Tammy), Topeka; Don Wiltz (Steve Luoma) Topeka, Doug Wiltz, Emmett; and one sister: Pat Stewart (George) Columbia, Missouri, plus many nieces and nephews. 

A private inurnment will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions in honor of David and his love of cats may be made to Helping Hands Humane Society in Topeka.

Mark Luedke Passes Away (Revised)

.APRIL 10, 1952 - MAY 18, 2025

Mark Chase Luedtke, known affectionately by all as Coach, embodied the spirit of leadership, unwavering dedication, and an infectious sense of humor. Born on April 10, 1952, in Emporia, KS, he set forth on a journey that would inspire countless lives until his peaceful passing on May 18, 2025, at his home in Rossville, KS. Coach Luedtke's legacy is a testament to the power of passion and perseverance. Coach's early years in Emporia laid the foundation for his exemplary path. A proud alumnus of Emporia State University,where he played cornerback for the ESU Hornets, and pursued secondary education with a vigor that would become his trademark.

His commitment to learning and growth was not just a personal mission but a gift he imparted to every individual he encountered. Mark's coaching career was nothing short of remarkable. Beginning in Rossville, from 1992 to 1995, he led his football teams to an astounding 29-4 record, capturing two league championships and propelling Rossville to their first state appearance with a runner-up finish. His talent for coaching was undeniable, and his impact on the field was only matched by the influence he had on his players off the field.

In 1996, Coach took his talents to Emporia, where he continued to break records and build champions. The pinnacle came in 1997 with a Centennial League Championship, a victory that echoed Coach's unwavering belief in the potential of his teams. His stint in Wathena was equally transformative, leading them to their first playoff appearance in 15 years and securing a DVL league championship in 2007.

Coach concluded hisillustrious high school coaching career at Wellsville (2008-2012),where he maintained an impressive 33-20 record. His guidance brought home two league championships and three district championships, further cementing his status as a coaching legend. Even after an accomplished career in high school football, Coach's passion for the game and youth development led him back to Rossville to coach the Junior Dawgs from 2017 to 2019. There, his expertise and enthusiasm helped the Dawgs secure two league championships. His influence extended far beyond the scoreboard,shaping the character and lives of young athletes. Away from thewhistle and playbook, Coach was an avid outdoorsman. The vast expanses of Western Kansas were his sanctuary,where he found joy in hunting quail, turkey, pheasant, and deer. His adventurous spirit was contagious, and his stories of the hunt were as captivating as his game-day speeches. Spirited, friendly, and adventurous – these words encompass the essence of Coach. He approached every challenge with a smile, every set back with a lesson, and every victory with humility. His spirit was a beacon that lit the path for all who had the privilege to know him.

Preceded in death by his beloved wife, Kathleen Ann Luedtke, his father, Walter Emil Luedtke, and his mother, Tate LaRhea Luedtke. Coach leaves behind a family that extends far beyond blood relations. His players, colleagues, and studentsform an enduring testament to the difference one passionate individual can make in the lives of many. He was a man who walked the talk, who lived life with gusto, and who left an indelible mark on the hearts of all who knew him. As we celebrate the life of Mark Chase Luedtke, let us carry forward the torch of his legacy. Let his story remind us to tackle each day with determination, to face challenges with a smile, and to always be a team player.  In his memory, let us live life with the same passion he had for the game, for his players, and for the community he cherished. Rest in peace, Coach.  Your final whistle has blown, but the echoes of your influence will resound through time. Thank you for teaching us that the true measure of success is not in trophies or titles, but in the lives we inspire and the love we share.

Marcus Muzzy Passes Away

Marcus M. Muzzy, 96, of St. Marys, died on Monday, May 12, 2025 at the Robert J. Dole VA Medical Center in Wichita, KS.

Gene Pelfrey Passes Away

With deep respect and heartfelt remembrance, we announce the passing of Donald "Gene" Pelfrey, who left us on August 14, 2024, at the age of 92. Born on June 20, 1932, in Rossville, Kansas, to Everett and Ora Pelfrey, Gene was known for his strong moral character and unwavering work ethic.

Gene was married to his beloved wife, Ila "Bernie" Pruessner on June 16th, 1956 in Kansas City, MO.

Gene served with honor in the United States Air Force during the Korean War as a B26 crew chief, beginning his service in Nevada and being deployed to Germany. After being honorably discharged in 1955, he brought the same dedication to his career as an electrical contractor, founding G&G Electric and making significant contributions to homes, schools, and nursing homes.

A respected third-degree Mason and member of the Shrine Arab Temple, Gene was also a founding member and two-time commander of the Rossville American Legion.

Gene was deeply devoted to his family. He found joy in traveling with Bernie and cherished peaceful moments spent on their farm and fishing on Melvern Lake. His love for nature and passion for reading reflected his appreciation for knowledge and a simple, fulfilling life.

Gene's word was his bond, embodying a time when a handshake was as binding as any contract. His legacy of honor, reliability, and quiet strength will be cherished by all who knew him.

Gene's life was marked by a profound love for his family and community. He is survived by his loving wife, Bernie, and their children, Randall (Donna) Pelfrey, Lisa (Rick) Pelfrey, and Les (Amy) Pelfrey. Gene was a proud grandfather to John (Chelsea) Pelfrey, Sara (Lewis)Tams, Brock and Ty Dick, Paige (Saagar) Mehta, Adam Pelfrey, Abby (Kodi) Minocha, and Brooke Pelfrey, and a great-grandfather to Emma and Conner Tams, Harper Pelfrey, and Sai Mehta. Gene now rests in eternal peace with his loved ones who preceded him, including his parents, Everett and Ora Pelfrey; sister, Kathleen (Orville) Stocker; and daughter-in-law, Nancy Pelfrey.

A celebration of life will be held Saturday, August 24th at 11:00am at the Citizen Potawatomi Nation Community Center, 806 Nishnabe Trail, Rossville, Kansas 66533. A private graveside memorial service with military honors will take place at Rossville Cemetery. 

The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Rossville American Legion, Jimmy Lillard Post 31, 442 Main St, PO BOX 338, Rossville, KS 66533 in honor Gene's lasting spirit of service. Gene's legacy of dedication, service, and love will continue to inspire all who knew him.

David Joseph Senior Passes Away

David Joseph Senior, 73, of St. Marys, died on Tuesday, April 15, 2025 at home surrounded by family.

Benjamin Querubin Passes Away

Benjamin Caindec Querubin, 97, of St. Marys, KS and formerly of California, died on Monday, April 14, 2025 surrounded by his family. 

John Pauley Passes Away

John Peter Pauly, age 77, passed away on Thursday, April 10, 2025. He was born on March 30, 1948 to Peter G. and Agnes R (Gros) Pauly in Wamego, Kansas.
