Amanda Hill Article in College Basketball Times
A national championship cancelled, online classes, an emergency room beyond capacity, multiple quarantines, making up missed clinicals and playing basketball in an empty gym, masked
It was an 18-month grind for Amanda Hill.
Any one of these situations could be a struggle for the average person, but Kansas Wesleyan University’s do-it-all star has proven well beyond average.
Prior to the pandemic shut down of college sports, Hill was a full-time nursing student with a demanding schedule, playing a leading role for the NAIA KWU Coyotes.
“Nursing school was the toughest thing I have ever done,” Hill said as she reflected on her years as a student-athlete.
She was only one of three remaining students from her original freshman class to graduate from the nursing program she began in 2018 at KWU. The nursing school grading scale is less flexible than the rest of the academic programs at KWU, so a grade of 79% or lower means you fail.
During finals week, she also had two games. “I had to take finals all day (even take a final early), then go play a basketball game. Then I stayed up all night to study and took finals the entire next day,” Hill said.
Hill has been relentless in basketball and her nursing program, and brings a selfless approach to both.
In her junior year, Hill and teammate Kelcey Hinz approached coach Ryan Showman on senior night to ask if one of them could not start the game so that a senior reserve player could have the moment. It was an important game as the Coyotes were playing for a conference championship, but Hill was more concerned with putting her teammate first.
“I thought that was the most selfless act anyone can ever do,” Showman said.

Schaefer True Blue Student Of Week
The news simply couldn't wait. So even though Elizabeth Schaefer had just left her house on Oct. 15 for volleyball practice at Rossville High School, her mother, Jenny, called her.
"I told her, 'You might want to put the car in park and check your e-mail,'" Jenny said.
Without hesitation, Elizabeth knew the news she was about to get. And judging from her mother's voice, she knew the news was good.
"She didn't tell me," Elizabeth said. "But I kind of knew."
When Schaefer opened the e-mail, she learned that years of hard work and preparation had paid off. The Rossville senior has been selected as a member of the 2021 All-National Concert Band by the National Association for Music Education.
Schaefer was one of nine flutists from across the nation chosen for the prestigious honor. She is the first student in Rossville history to make the All-National Honor Band. Last year, only four Kansans made the honor band, all from Class 6A schools in the Kansas City metro area.
Needless to say, achieving her goal impacted Schaefer, who is this week's Capitol Federal True Blue® Student of the Week.
"I don't remember much of that volleyball practice," Schaefer recalled. "It was exciting, but I also didn't believe it. It took like a week or so for me to realize I had made it and it wasn't a dream or fake."

Hammes MIAA Defensive Player Of Week
Emporia State's Dawson Hammes earned MIAA Football Defensive Player of the Week honors for his efforts in the Hornets come from behind win at Fort Hays State.
Hammes led Emporia States defense with 12 tackles in the Hornets 15-12 win at Fort Hays State. Two of his tackles came on the Tigers final drive while they were driving for a potential game tying or winning score. He had a touchdown-saving tackle after a 29-yard gain on second down with under a minute left and then was in on the third down stop with 25 seconds left.
As a team the Hornets held the Tigers, the second ranked passing team in the MIAA, to under 150 yards passing.

Friday Night's FB Games
Rossille will host #9 ranked Nemaha Central Friday night at 7 PM in the round of 16.
The Dawgs will also be very interested in their next opponent which will be decided by the Osage City (8-1) and Riverton (7-2) game.
The Dawgs will also be watching the results of #2 Wellsville (9-0) and Humboldt (6-3) game and of course the St. Marys (5-3) and #4 Silver Lake (7-2) will of much interest.

Amelia Foster At 3A State Meet
Rossville's Amelia Foster finished 45th of the 97 runners at the 3A Cross Country State Championships. The lone Rossville runner had a time of 22:45.8.

Rossville hosted their first round playoff game against Republic County-Belleville on Friday, Oct. 29. The Dawgs had little trouble coasting to a 35-0 halftime lead.

Gene "Pete" Allen Passes Away
Gene G. “Pete” Allen, 84, passed away Monday, October 18, 2021, at his home on the Allen Farm in Valencia.
He was born August 20, 1937, at Topeka the son of Ross and Lavina Johnson Allen.
He was raised in the Silver Lake community and graduated from Silver Lake High School. He graduated from Kansas State University with a degree in Industrial Engineering.
Pete worked as an Industrial Engineer and foreman at a dairy plant in Green Bay, WI. until moving back to the farm in Kansas in 1975. Pete was a member of the Rossville United Methodist Church. He was a board member for the Kaw Valley electric COOP, he also served on the Dover Township Board and Valencia Cemetery Board.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Gary Allen. Pete and Ginger Shannon (RHS 1959) were united in marriage at Rossville in 1961. She survives at the farm.
Other survivors include two daughters, Debra (Lance) Rezac, Onaga and Suzy (Stan) Thompson, Rossville; a brother Bruce Allen; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
A Celebration Of Life will be at 11:00 A.M. Thursday, October 28, 2021 at the Rossville United Methodist Church. Memorial contributions may be made to the Silver Lake FFA and Rossville FFA. Memorials may be sent in care of Piper Funeral Home, 714 Maple Street, St. Marys, Kansas 66536.
