Silver Lake Defeats St. Marys With Late TD

From the Capital Journal:

It was another epic showdown between Highway 24 opponents. Silver Lake (3-1) edged St. Marys (3-1) 26-20 thanks to a last second rushing touchdown in the red zone by Jayden Waterer. The Eagles went on the road and delivered St. Marys their first loss of the season.

Dysen Schooler set the Eagles into the’ red zone with less than a minute to go in the fourth quarter. The quarterback dropped back and found Dayne Johnson on the far sideline.

Johnson was tackled at the 1-yard line with a few seconds on the clock. Waterer plunged in for the game-winning touchdown on the very next play. It was Waterer’s first carry of the season.

Silver Lake iced the game by intercepting St. Marys on the final play of regulation.

Schooler made some big plays for the Eagles in the win. He found Johnson on a 68-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter for Silver Lake’s first points. He also threw a 31-yard touchdown to Brody Deiter on a great post route in the second quarter.

Allen Lees had a first half rushing touchdown, too. The lone points for the Eagles in the second half came on the short rushing touchdown from Waterer.

Jennifer Lee Darting Passes Away

Jennifer Lee Darting, a beloved mother, daughter, sister, and friend, passed away on September 15, 2024, in Rossville, Kansas, at the age of 55. Born on March 19, 1969, in Topeka, Jennifer was a vibrant presence in the lives of those who knew her.

Jennifer's career as a cook in the school kitchen was deeply intertwined with her passion for nurturing children. This role allowed her to foster her love of children, where she created lasting connections with students of all ages. Her dedication to ensuring that every child had a nutritious meal exemplified her caring nature. In addition to her work in the school, Jennifer also took on part-time hours in the after-school program, furthering her commitment to the well-being and enhancement of children's lives. She enjoyed every moment spent in her sister's daycare as a substitute, often delighting in the opportunity to read captivating stories to the children from the library.

Educated at Silver Lake High School, from which she graduated in 1987, Jennifer carried a bright spirit throughout her life. Her radiant personality was characterized by an ever-present smile and an innate ability to engage in lengthy conversations with strangers, quickly turning them into friends. Jennifer was a joy to be around, filling rooms with laughter and warmth, and creating cherished memories with her family while cooking large meals alongside her sister.

Her love for reading was another significant part of her identity; she could often be found immersed in a book for hours, never allowing herself to go long without diving into another story. Additionally, her affection for animals was apparent in her home, where she lovingly cared for six cats.

Jennifer's pride in her family, especially her role as a mother, was profound. She experienced the joys of motherhood when she welcomed her daughter, Jocelyn, into the world at the age of 40. Raising Jocelyn was one of her proudest accomplishments, and her love for her daughter knew no bounds.

Jennifer is lovingly remembered by her daughter, Jocelyn Darting; her father, Gerry Darting; her sister and brother-in-law, Sarah and Bryant Presley; her partner, Domingo Osorio; and her cherished nieces and nephews, Jeff, Jonah, Abigail, Anna, Isabel Escobar and Carrigan Presley. She is predeceased by her mother, Judy Darting.

As we reflect on the beautiful life of Jennifer Lee Darting, we celebrate the joy she brought to those around her, her unwavering compassion for children, and her ability to connect with others in meaningful ways. Her legacy of love, laughter, and kindness will endure in the hearts of her family and friends forever.

Memorial contributions can be made to Bank of the Flint Hills in care of Jocelyn Darting. All proceeds will go towards Jocelyn's future needs.

Funeral services are pending and will be announced at a later date.

Rossville Names New Basketball Coach

ROSSVILLE — The Bulldawgs will be led by a new head coach this spring, a familiar face to many around the program. Kenny Swart takes over as the head coach of Rossville baseball, the athletic department announced via social media on Monday.

Swart replaces Eammon Bradley, who has been the head coach of the Bulldawgs since 2018. Swart was an assistant coach under Bradley last season as Rossville finished with a 12-8 record. They reached the regional semifinals before losing to Osage City.

"Knowing the boys is going to be a huge advantage for us because you don't come in being the new guy and learning what everyone can and can't do," Swart said. "Being familiar with them definitely helps. I had a couple of their older brothers, too."

Preview of Nemaha Central FB Game

It's been a tough start to the season for the Bulldawgs. Week 1 started with an OT loss to Silver Lake. Last week, they lost 24-19 to St. Marys in their home opener. Quarterback Tayson Horak threw for 143 yards and rushed for 40 against the Bears. Running the ball has been Rossville's bread and butter through the first two weeks, but deep throws against Nemaha Central may be needed to upset the Thunder on the road.

After a disappointing Week 1 loss, Nemaha Central earned their first win by taking down Silver Lake 35-7. The run first offense could not be stopped by the Eagles. Carter Hajek, a junior, rushed for 183 yards on 32 carries and three touchdowns in the win. He also threw for 147 yards on 5-for-8 passing along with two touchdowns. The Bulldawgs struggled to stop the rushing attack of St. Marys last week as they allowed 200 yards on the ground. Expect Nemaha Central to focus their efforts at winning the line of scrimmage and running the ball all evening. Nemaha Central 28, Rossville 13
