Capital Names Donovan and Badura To Watch List

Donovan and Badura Named By Capital- Journal as players to w during the 2024-25 basketball season.watch,

Jack Donovan is a Junior who was on the First Team All Mid East League last year while scoring 14 points and 3 rebounds per game.

Kameron Badura is a senior who has the ability to score at the rim and also shoot 3 pointers.

Nora and Rylee Named in TopSportsNews

 NORA BURDIEK, Rossville

Burdiek, a 5-foot-11 sophomore forward, had a breakout season for Rossville as a freshman, earning TSN All-Shawnee County Second 10 and All-Mid-East League second-team recognition. Burdiek averaged 15 points, 9 rebounds and 3 steals per game last season as Rossville posted an 18-4 record. Burdiek earned all-county first-team honors in volleyball this fall.

A junior, Dick had a big sophomore season for the Bulldawgs, helping Rossville post an 18-4 record. Dick, a 5-foot-6 guard, received TSN All-Shawnee County Second 10 and All-Mid-East second-team honors last season after averaging 15 points, 3 assists and 3 steals and shooting 36 percent from 3-point range.

TopSportsNews Player To Watch This Year

 JACK DONOVAN, Rossville

A 5-foot-11 junior, Donovan made the All-Shawnee County Top 10 for the first time last season after being named the co-newcomer of the year and receiving honorable mention as a freshman. Donovan averaged 14 points, 4 rebounds and 2.4 assists for the 15-7 Bulldawgs while setting a school record with 59 3-point baskets. He was a first-team All-Mid-East League pick. Donovan is also a standout in football and golf for the Bulldawgs, earning All-Shawnee County first-team golf honors.

Kelly Cowan Passes Away

 

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Kelly Cowan, age 58, on November 25, 2024, at his home in Topeka, Kansas. Kelly Eugene Cowan was born on May 11, 1966 in Topeka, Kansas, to Ron and Mary (Besta) Cowan.

 Kelly was raised in Rossville, graduated from Rossville High School, attended Emporia State University and worked for Custom Wood Products in St. Marys for more than 30 years. Kelly was an avid and loyal sports fan and loved following and discussing his Rossville Bulldawgs, the Kansas State Wildcats, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, the Kansas City Royals, and the Kansas City Chiefs. He loved being outdoors, whether he was fishing, hunting, riding motorcycles or just driving.

 Kelly is survived by his daughters, Jericka (Aaron) Barber, of Delia, and Annalyn Cowan, of Holton, grandsons Easton, Bowen and Ryatt Barber, his father, Ron Cowan, of Rossville, his brothers John (Brigette), of Topeka, Rodney (Deana), of Maple Hill, Kevin (Valerie), of Wichita, and Shane (Kelly), of Allen, Texas, and his many aunts and uncles, cousins and nieces and nephews. Kelly was preceded in death by his mother, Mary, and grandparents John and Grace Cowan, Edward Besta, and Clint and Winifred Kerwin.

 Kelly battled many challenges in recent years, but he was proud of his family and friends, and loved them very much, and they loved him. Kelly was happy to “hang out” and “shoot the breeze” with friends and strangers alike, and he will be missed by many.

A memorial visitation will be held from 5:00-7:00 PM, Tuesday, December 3 at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church, 703 Main St. in Rossville with a rosary following at 7:00 PM. Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, December 4, also at St. Stanislaus. Burial will follow in Rossville Cemetery. 

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Piper Funeral Home, 714 Maple St., St. Marys, KS 66536 to be used for a future education fund for Kelly’s grandsons.

Pamela Pasley Passes Awway

The world bids farewell to Pamela Jean Pasley in Rossville, Kansas, born in Topeka, Kansas, departing on October 13, 2024 at the age of 66.

S.he was predeceased by: her father Donald Pasley; and her brother Ronald "Ronnie Joe" Pasley. She is survived by: her mother Grace Pasley; her sisters, Susan Gragert (John) and Christa Teel (Sean); her daughters, Brandi Ruse (Shane) and Mandi Randall (Ronnie); and her grandson Zachary Ruse. She is also survived by nieces and nephews.

The family requests those who wish to express sympathy to consider making a donation to Rossville Healthcare & Rehab Center or Interim Healthcare & Hospice in memory of Pam

Centrailia Wins 1A Sub-State

Half-time sccore is 14-3 in favor of Panthers.   The first quarter was scoreless.  Centrailia scored TDs with 11:06 and 24.8 remaining in the second.  The Dawgs hit a FG with 1:45 left in the quarter after missing one in the first quarter.

Nether team scored in the third quarter.  

In the fourth, Tayson Horak threw a TD pass to Jack Donovan and Centrailia scored their last TD at 3:38 remaining  to go ahead 22-9.  Rossville failed on a two point conersion.

Rossville Sub-State Football At Centralia

Rossville and Centrailia are ranked in the Top 4 along with Smith Center.  The winner of the Rossville-Centrailia will play Smith Center for the 1A State Title next weekend

Martha (Wood) Rezac Passes Away


Martha Jane Rezac (Wood), born on October 13, 1934, in Topeka, Kansas, passed away on November 18, 2024, in Rossville, Kansas. A daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Martha leaves behind a legacy of love and dedication to her family.

Martha graduated from Rossville High School and began her career working at Bell Telephone in Topeka. 

Martha was married to Ernest Rezac on December 13, 1952 in Rossville at the Rossville Christian Church. He preceded her in death in January of 2018. 

She devoted her life to her family, serving as a devoted homemaker while also working long hours alongside her husband, Ernest, on their family farm north of Silver Lake. Her commitment to her family was evident in every aspect of her life, and she took pride in creating a nurturing and loving environment for her children and grandchildren.

Martha was known for her vibrant personality. She possessed a genuine love for her grandchildren, which deeply enriched her life. As an amazing cook, she delighted her family with delicious homemade pies and often shared this joy through her generous spirit. Her passion for gardening also brought her immense satisfaction, as she maintained a big garden that provided for both her kitchen and her family gatherings.

She is survived by her daughter, Janice (Dennis) Prior, and her son, David (Vicki) Rezac. Martha's love extended to her six grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren, who will remember her warmth and culinary prowess.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Mary Wood, husband, Ernest Rezac, her daughter, Nancy Dickerson, and her brother, Frank Wood. Their memories will remain cherished within the hearts of those who knew her.

Visitation will be held at Piper Funeral Home in St. Marys, Kansas, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM on Thursday, November 21, 2024. A graveside service will take place at Rossville Cemetery on Friday, November 22, 2024, at 10:00 AM. Memorial contributions in Martha's name to Piper Funeral Home.
