on Friday night in Rossville. They will challenge Silver Lake
for a trip to the state championship game.

The Dawgs (10-1) face Colgan (8-3), a perreniel 2A power that has
moved up to 3A this year, on Friday night on the Rossville home field.
The Dawgs have been in the playoffs for 11 straight years and have
reached the semi-finals in six of those years. But getting past the
quarter-finals and into the semi-final, where they will likely face
Silver Lake again, will be a tough chore as evidenced by Colgan's two
playoff victories so far this fall. Rossville is slightly favored by the
Capital-Journal to make it to the semi-finals once again.

Former Rossville resident Cleo Winsor Pearl, age 82, passed away Nov. 5
in Ft. Collins, CO.
Cleo was born Sep;t. 5, 1930 in Eskridge and moved to St. Marys where
she later met and married John "Jakc" Pearl in 1951,
Upon retirement in 1985, they moved to their family home NW of
Rossville. After Jack's passing away in 1991, Cleo maintained two homes,
the family farm in Rossville and a second home in Loveland, CO., until
2003 when she sold the farmhouse formerly known as Buttermilk Station and
Neddo's Hotel.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 3:00 on Monday, Nov.
12, 2012 at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in St. Marys with burial
at the Mount Calvary Cemetery. She will lie in state at Piper Funeral
Home after 6:00 PM Sunday, Nov. 11.

Rossville was down by 13, but were able to come back to force
their second round playoff game into overtime. Striking first with a TD,
Sabetha came right back to also put one on the board. However,
they attempted a 2 point conversion which failed to give the Dawgs a
victory and chance to next play Colgan.

The Dawgs scored on their very first play from scrimmage and racked up
34 points in the first half enroute to a 41-0 victory over Pleasant Ridge on
Tuesday evening.
Nick Ressor started the scoring with a 72 yard
ramble on the first play. The Dawgs broke the game open in the second quarter
asDalton Catron added
three rushing TDs and Marcus
Dalton returned a fumble 15
yards for another TD to jump to the 34 point half-time lead. Nick
Ressor added another pass
reception TD in the third.

The Blue Jays (5-5) knocked off Riley County 28-8 in their playoff round
on Tuesday and should present a challenge for the Dawgs.

— Rossville’s
only loss came to Mid-East League rival Silver Lake, 32-12, and the Bulldogs
won a wild shootout with St. Marys 49-36 to clinch the district title. Dalton
Catron threw for 287 yards and four touchdown and has 1,394 yards this season.
Pleasant Ridge knocked off Atchison County 28-20 behind freshman Nick Holmes,
who ran and threw for a touchdown and had two interceptions on defense.

The playoffs for the 3A football championship begin Tue. night (Oct. 30)
for the 32 qualifying teams. The Dawgs will entertain Pleasant Ridge on the
home field and if they win, as expected, will then play the winner
of the Sabetha-Riley County match-up on Oct. 3.
Other games of interest include Saint Marys at Silver Lake, Sabetha at
Riley County and Wabaunsee at Linden in 2A.

Rossville came in 8th of the 13 teams competing at the 3A Regional
Cross-Country meet. Riley Co,, Sabetha and Silver Lake will advance to
the State meet. Clayton Rubio came up just short of a spot at the state
meet finishing 13th with a time of 18:57.

Clarence Joe Martinek, 86, of Topeka, passed away at his home, Sun.,
October 21, 2012. Clarence was born Nov. 20, 1925, in Rossville to Steven A. and Mary (Bravens) Martinek.
He married Betty Bond January 17, 1948 at Holy Name Church. She
survives. He was preceded in death by three children, Daniel Martinek, Cindy
Scott and Mark Martinek and his great-grandson, Jacob Cain.
He co-founded Martinek & Flynn Siding and Windows in 1957.
Clarence had assisted people with their taxes for 63 years beginning his
sophomore year in college. He hunted and fished as a younger man, but was most
known to be a hard worker.
Survivors include his wife of almost 65 years, Betty Martinek,
Topeka; their children, Deb Flynn (Rick), Darrell Martinek (Brenda) and Tina
Hunter (Shane); 20 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
Family will greet friends Wed. at Mater Dei Holy Name Catholic
Church from 4 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m. followed
by family sharing memories. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10
a.m., Thurs. at Mater Dei Holy Name Catholic Church. Memorial contributions may
be sent to Mater Dei Parish, Midland Hospice, or Helping Hands Humane Society

Scott Winfield
Kelsey, 92, of Edmond, Oklahoma, formerly of Rossville, Kansas, passed away
October 12, 2012 with his family at his side.
Scott was born
in Topeka, Kansas on August 29, 1920. He was the son of Scott and Iva Carothers
Kelsey. He graduated from Topeka High School in 1938 and from Kansas State
University in 1942 with a degree in agriculture. He was a farmer and
farmed with his dad and two brothers in the Oakland, Silver Lake and Rossville
communities. He married Faye Townsend on February 19, 1943. They would
have celebrated their 70th wedding
anniversary in February 2013.
He was active in
many organizations in the Rossville community and was a member of the Rossville
United Methodist Church for over 50 years. He was also an integral part of
getting the new church built in 1992. He was a member of Topeka Lodge No. 17,
Topeka Scottish Rite bodies, Arab Shrine, Topeka chapter of the Sons of the
American Revolution and past president of the Kansas Society of Sons of the
American Revolution. After his retirement, he volunteered for the V.I.T.A.
program of the Internal Revenue Service for 17 years.
In 2007, at the
age of 87, he and Faye moved to a retirement center in Edmond, Oklahoma.
They made many new friends and continued to be involved in many activities. He
was a faithful member of Crossings Community Church in Oklahoma City, where
everyone knew he would be sitting in the 5th pew by the left aisle at the 9:30
service every Sunday morning!
Scott was
predeceased by his parents and his brothers Dick and Sam. He is survived
by his wife, Faye, of 69 years; daughter, Linda Kelsey Wise, Edmond, OK; son,
Douglas Kelsey (Darlynn), Honolulu, Hawaii; grandchildren, Shandy Condie,
Gilbert, AZ; Jereme Wise, Leander, Texas, Heidi Reeder, Edmond, OK; Leisha
Johns, Queen’s Creek, AZ; and Ja’NeyMesquitta, Boston, Massachusetts and 7
great-grandchildren, Logan Johns, Jackson Condie, Jacob Condie, Keelie Wise,
Ella Jane Reeder, Grady Reeder and Georgia Mesquitta.

David C. Millenbruch, 53, died at his home in Maple Hill, Wednesday,
October 10, 2012.
He graduated from Rossville High and was employed by Goodyear Tire in
Topeka.
David was preceded in death by his mother Louise M. Millenbruch on March
28, 2008.
Among survivors include his children, Joseph, Marcel, Ambrose and
Elisabeth; his father Mim Millenbruch; sisters Rita Hansfor and Evelyne
Armstrong.
Requiem Mass will be at 10:00 A.M. Monday, October 15, 2012 at
St. John Vianney Catholic Church in Maple Hill. Mr. Millenbruch will lie in
state after 6:00 P.M. Sunday, October 14, 2012 at Piper Funeral Home in St.
Marys where there will be a rosary recited at 7:00 P.M. Interment will be at the
Marysville Cemetery, Marysville, KS. at 2:00 P.M. Monday.

Harold O. Irwin, 93, Alma, formerly of Rossville passed away Thursday,
October 4, 2012 at the Alma Manor.
He was born August 30, 1919 in Jefferson County the son of the
late Wm. B. and Alice Ertel Irwin. Mr. Irwin had lived in Rossville most of his
life and had been an auto mechanic, welder and owned Harold's Machine Shop in
Topeka. He was a member of the Rossville United Methodist Church.
He was married to Mildred P. Newman on June 5, 1941. She preceded
him in death on May 7, 1997. Harold was also preceded in death by an infant
daughter, Cathy Sue and a son, Harold E. Gene Irwin; a brother and 2 sisters.
On February 14, 2001 he was united in marriage to Twila Corbin.
Survivors include his wife Twila of the home; a daughter Sharon Kay (Steve)
Fannin; a brother, Wm. E. (Mary) Irwin; 9 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren
and 22 great-great- grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 1:00
P.M. Monday, October 8, 2012 at
the Rossville United Methodist Church. Interment will be in the Rossville
Cemetery. Mr. Irwin will lie in state an hour before service time on Monday at
the church. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Grace
Hospice and sent in care of Piper Funeral Chapel, P.O. Box 642, Rossville, KS.

Sydney Marney captured
first place for individual honors at the Silver Lake Invitational Golf Tourney
with a 41 and led the RHS team to a third place finish. The nine
hole tournament was played Oct. 1 at the Cypress Ridge GC.

Phil Quinn, a
Rossville resident and softball coach at Wamego High School, has written
"Release Point," a book about two girls who are rivals in the
competitive environment of fast-pitch softball. They collide during a game as
pre-teens, leaving one of them injured and unable to compete for several years.
The uninjured girl becomes a star on her high school team. The other girl works
in her family's barn and develops into an amazing pitcher, who tries to make a
comeback her junior year on a team that has had several losing seasons.

Area fire crews
battled a blaze at a house Saturday night in Rossville in which two children
were able to
escape unharmed.
Silver Lake and
Rossville firefighters were dispatched at 7:14 p.m. to 414 Pine Street in
Rossville on a report of a fire that possibly was electrical in nature.
The first emergency
personnel arrived on scene 2 minutes later and reported smoke was visible. The
first fire apparatus arrived at 7:21 p.m. and reported flames were visible,
according to Shawnee County dispatch.
A Shawnee County
emergency dispatcher said two children were inside the home at the time of the
fire but were able to make it out OK.
The fire was
declared out at 8:50 p.m.
The Shawnee County
Sheriff’s Office asked the local chapter of the American Red Cross to provide
relief for two adults and four children.
The single-story
home is owned by Michael Failer, according to Shawnee County appraiser records.
The property was valued at $66,250.

Beverly Ann Gentry, 75,
passed away on Thursday, September 27, 2012 at Stormont Vail Hospital in
Topeka.
She was born Jan.
15, 1937 at Sabetha, was raised in Centrailia and moved to Topeka where she
graduated from Topeka High. She lived in Rossville for many years
after marrying Billy G. Gentry June 12, 1955 and raised sons Rick, Ron, Steve,
and Chad.
Funeral services will be at 10:00 A.M. Monday, October 1, 2012 at
the Rossville Christian Church. Interment will be in the Rossville Cemetery.
She will lie in state and the family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00
P.M. Sunday at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to the Rossville
Christian Church and sent in care of Piper Funeral Home, 714 Maple St, St.

Valley" at the Royal Valley Invitational and finished in second place.
The team was led by a third-place finish from Sophie Dalmasso
(16:41). Mattie Swisher added a sixth (17:07) and Amanda Hurtig was 12th
(17:41).
Clayton Rubio narrowly missed the top 10 for the boys team,
taking 12th.

Leo and Sue Badura of Rossville will celebrate their 40th anniversary on
Sunday, Sept. 30th with an Open House at the Citizen Potawatomi
Nation building from 2:00 to 4:00.

Carol Jean Schott, 74, passed
away Thursday, September 13, 2012 at her home in Rossville.
She was born August 21, 1938 at Oak, NE, the daughter of Carl and
Hazel Comstock Striggow. She grew up in Nebraska and graduated from Nelson High
School, Nelson, NE, in 1956. She had lived in the Rossville community since
1977.
Mrs. Schott was a bookkeeper and had worked at the Rossville
Grain Company and later for the Shawnee Terminal Elevator in Topeka. She was a
member of the Topeka Reformed Presbyterian Church.
Jean was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Charles
Striggow and a son-in-law, Philip Taylor. On October 14, 1956 she was united in
marriage to Donald Eugene Gene Schott at Oak, NE. He survives of the home.
Other survivors include three daughters, Tracey Taylor and Tami Eustice, both
of Rossville, and Teresa (Brad) Holmer, Silver Lake; her siblings, Bonnie
Colgrove, Salina, Allen Striggow, Lacey, WA, Mona Hansen and Shirley Jacobitz,
both of Hastings, NE, June Andelt, Crete, NE, and Larry Striggow, Superior, NE;
grandchildren, Chris (Kristin) Eustice, Stephen (Jacy) Taylor, Rachel Taylor,
Jenni Holmer and Derek Holmer; great-grandchildren, Anthony, Jordan, Tucker,
Trey and Taylynn.
Funeral services will be at 1:00 P.M. Thursday, September
20, 2012 at the Topeka Reformed Presbyterian Church. Interment will be in the
Rossville Cemetery. Mrs. Schott will lie in state after 2:00 P.M. Wednesday,September
19, 2012 at Piper Funeral Chapel in Rossville, where the family will receive
friends from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. Memorial contributions may be made to Midland
Hospice or Topeka Reformed Presbyterian Church and sent in care of the Piper
Funeral Chapel, P.O. Box 642, Rossville, Kansas 66533. Online condolences may

The Dawgs scored twice in the first half and held Abilene scoreless
until the last quarter to post a win in their homecoming game on Sept. 7.
Dalton Catron and T. Horak each scored on one yard runs and Taylor
Hartshorn kicked the two PATs.
The Dawgs rushed for 141 yard to Abilene's 148. Abilene led in
passing with 15/39 for 151 yards to the Dawgs Dalton Catron with 9/16 for
95 yards and two interceptions, but the Dawgs had 4 interceptions to stop
Abilene drives.
Dalton Catron led the Rossville rushing attack with 88 yards in 21
attempts. Nick Reesor had 45 yards in 11 carries and T. Horak carried 5
times for 8 yards. On the receiving end, T. Horak led the team
with 4 catches for 44 yards. Morris had 2 receptions for 25 yards and
Corbin Horak, Trace Davis and Nick Reesor each had one catch for 14, 11, and 2
yards respectively

The RHS Girls Golf team was one of four entered in the West Franklin
Invitational meet on Sept. 6 which was held at Lamont Hill Golf Club.
The RHS girls came in first with a score of 235, followed by Santa Fe Trail at
246, West Franklin at 258, and St. Marys at 285.
Sydney Marney came in first with ascore of 50,
a six stroke advantage over the second and third place finishers.
Other RHS individuals placing wre Makayla
Crow, fifth with a 60, Brooke Channel, sixth with a 61, and Staci Van Druff, 9th ith a 64. Rachel Lord had a 73.

RHS volleyball team competed in a quadrangular meet at Emporia High on Sept. 4
against much larger schools. They were outmatched by Washburn Rural and
lost their match to them by 8-25, 10-25 scores. They kept Emporia High
close but lost 19-25, 17-25. But, their match with Topeka High
brought the season record to 4-4 as they put the Trojans away with 25-17,
25-19 scores.

town for the Friday night football game. There will be a parade at 2:00 PM
and the crowning of the Homecoming King and Queen will take place prior to the

John C.
Miller, 99, of Topeka, passed away Monday, September 3, 2012. John was born
September 12, 1912, in the West Union community, son of Albert and Josephine
(Wilson) Miller. He attended West Union grade school and graduated from
Rossville High School. John farmed in
Shawnee & Wabaunsee County for all his life, until his health declined in
2008.
He was united in marriage to Violet Margaret McRoberts on
February 19, 1938, and to this union, four children were born. John is survived
by his four children, Donald D. (Betty) Miller, Ellen K. (Norman) Coyle, Ruth
Dukart, and Albert L. (Carolyn) Miller, 21 grandchildren, 32
great-grandchildren, a sister, Ruby Hatch, and loving companion, Helen Conway.
He was preceded in death by three wives, a brother, two
great-grandsons, and two great-granddaughters.
Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 8, 2012,
at Dover Federated Church, Dover. Interment will follow at Dover Cemetery,
Dover. John will lie in state after 2:00 p.m. Friday, September 7, 2012, at
Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel, Topeka, where the family will greet friends from

Harold N. Keener, age 99, passed away Mach 9, 2012. He was born
Aug. 22, 1912 in Rossville, KS, to Newton and Rene (Martin)
Keener.
He was preceeded in death by his wife Doris, one sister and one brother.
He is survived by daughter Loretta Miles of Clay Center and son Larry
Keener of Clay Center as well as five grandchildren and ten
great-grandchildren.
Interment was at Greenwood Cemetery in Clay Center.

The volleyball team took third place at the Prairie View Invitational by
downing Humbolt 25-21 and 26-24. They began the tourney with a 25-10,
25-23 win over Metro Academy but fell in three games to Burlington 12-25,
25-22, 21-25. They then took care of host Prairie View 25-21, 21-25,
25-20 but fell to Wellsville 20-25, 20-25. That put them into the match
for third place against Humbolt.
The team stands 3-2 at this juncture of the very young season.

victory over Nebraska-Kearney in an MIAA football game Thursday evening at
Yager Stadium in Topeka.

Naomi R. Sumner, 86, passed away Friday, August 24, 2012 at the St.
Marys Manor.
She was born February 21, 1926 at Delia, the daughter of
Lindsay Vance “Lynn” and Emma Mullinix Keller. She grew up in the Delia
community and graduated from Delia High School.
Mrs. Sumner was a nurse’s aide for nearly 20 years at the
St. Marys Manor. Naomi was a member of the Rossville Bible Church. She was a
past member of the Delia Presbyterian Church and the Rossville Christian
Church.
Services for Naomi will be at 10:00 A.M. Monday, August 27, 2012 at the Rossville Bible
Church. Interment will be in the Delia Cemetery. The family will receive
friends from 6:00 until 7:30

Marlene Ann Kokenge, 67,
Rossville, passed away Thursday, August 16, 2012 surrounded by her family.
Marlene was the first child born to Wayne and Creta McMillan. She
is survived by her husband Elmer; three children, Deanna, Larry and Chris;
grandchildren, Deran and Krista; and her siblings, Richard, Alan and Kathy.

Washburn University begins football practice
Thursday, Aug 9, looking for a new quarterback.
All-America quarterback Dane Simoneau graduated last Spring
holding nearly every school record and a runner-up finish for the Harlon
Hill Trophy. Coach Craig Schurig has a pair of replacements,
and there will be a battle during the fall camp to determine this year's
starter.

Butler Community College transfer Joel
Piper emerged from spring
practice in a dead heat. Buhler saw some time last year as a true
freshman behind Simoneau. Piper also is a sophomore, redshirting one year
at Butler and seeing limited action as a back-up last year.
Fall camp will sort out who will be the starter and who will be
the back-up, though Coach Schurig has indicated that both might see
considerable action.
Washburn had a 10-3 record last year and gained an
NCAA Division II playoff berth.

Ronald Lee Kesinger, of Rossville, peacefully passed away Thursday,
August 2, 2012, on his 63rd birthday. He was born in Topeka, KS
on August 2, 1949, the son of Pete and Jean (Dick) Kesinger.
Ron graduated from Highland Park High School. He spent his entire
life in the Topeka and Rossville area.
He married Ann Sassaman on December 19, 1975. She preceded him in
death. His parents, and one brother, Gary Kesinger, also preceded him in death.
Survivors include one brother, Steve Kesinger (Kathy), nieces Amanda Kesinger,
Sara Simon (Marco), and nephews Travis Kesinger and Kayden Simon.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, August 9th, at East Side Baptist Church, 4425 SE
29th St., Topeka, KS. Private inurnment will be at a later date. Memorial

Southwestern Bell retiree who does substitute teaching, said Christian
instruction should return to K-12 public schools.
"That's a huge
deficit that we have in the public schools today," she said. "Allow

Corbet, owner of
Ravenwood Lodge hunting facility, said he would seek state investment to
promote tourism.
"Hunting in
Kansas could be the Pike's Peak of Colorado," Corbet said. "Pike's
Peak is just a rock in Colorado. They've promoted the heck out of it."
Childers worked for
the Shawnee County Clerk's Office and sheriff's department for the past 20
years. She said her management skills were exhibited while bringing stability
to Auburn Township's board.

A fire that apparently started in their attached garage burned the home
of David and Tracy Wyatt at 6944 N. W. Carlson Rd completely to the ground,
leaving just one wall standing. The fire was first reported
at 5:40 PM on Tuesday evening. All were able to evacuate the house
without injury.

Melvin P. Deiter, 87, formerly of Maple Hill passed away Sunday, July
29, 2012 at St. Francis Hospital in Topeka.
He was born August 4, 1924 at Paxico, the son of Francis P. and
Verna M. Stone Deiter. He was raised in the Maple Hill community and graduated
from Maple Hill High School in 1942.
Melvin served as an army corpsman in WWII and worked for
Morell's Meat Packing aftr returning to Maple Hill. He also worked at the
V.A. Hospital was a farmer and rancher. He was a member of St.
Stanislaus Catholic Church in Rossville and the American Legion.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 A.M. Thursday, August 2,
2012 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in St. Marys. Interment will be
in the Maple Hill Cemetery, Maple Hill, Kansas. Mr. Deiter will lie in state
Wednesday 5:00 until 7:00 P.M. at Piper Funeral Home in
St. Marys where there will be a rosary recited at 7:00 P.M.

They were bounced from the championship round by Davy Jones of Colorado
in the first game of the day. But a win against the Wichita Prospects
gave them another chance against Davy Jones in the evening. However,
they were one run short in the 4-3 loss.

The Rossville
Rattlers are potentially two wins away from claiming a national championship.
The Rattlers won
two games Wednesday at the NBC Summer Nationals at Bettis Family Sports Complex
to reach the winner’s bracket finals of the 19-under national tourney.
Rossville opened the day with a 1-0 victory against the Wichita Sluggers 18’s
then topped the Rawlings Red Prospects 4-1 Wednesday night.
Credit the
Rattlers’ pitching for much of their success.
Luke Bordewick and
Matt Wivinis combined on a two-hit shutout against the Sluggers, and Wivinis
and Aaric Woodyard teamed up in the nightcap to keep the Red Prospects at bay.
“Our pitching has
been outstanding,” Rossville manager Brett Cowdin said. “We haven’t hit the
ball as well as we’d like, but I saw some signs of it coming around tonight.
“We’re battling.”
Perhaps no one
battled more than Bordewick. The Washburn Rural product and Pittsburg State
outfielder hadn’t pitched for the Rattlers all season, but he shut down the
Sluggers for five complete innings.
“He was nails,”
Cowdin said.
In the nightcap,
Rossville’s Sam Reesor belted a two-run double in the fourth inning to give the
Rattlers a 3-1 lead that proved more than enough cushion for Wivinis and
Woodyard. Shawnee Heights product and Washburn catcher David Gauntt added a
solo home run one inning later to complete the scoring.
The Rattlers’
championship quest will continue at 11:30 a.m. Thursday in the winner’s bracket
finale. If they win that game, they will advance directly to the Summer
Nationals championship game at 4:15 p.m.
If Rossville loses
at 11:30 a.m., it will play in the loser’s bracket finale for the right to
advance to the title game.

The Rossville Rattlers took another step in the NBC Summer Nationals
by beating the Wichita Sluggers 18 team on
Wednesday morning in a 1-0 pitching duel.
Rossville now gets a rematch with the Red Prospects Wed. evening at 7:00 PM at Lake
Shawnee. The Red
Prospects are the only team to defeat the Rattlers thus far in the
tournament, and that was by a narrow 3-1 margin.
The Rattlers are 3-1 in the tournament which ends on Thursday.

The Rossville
Rattlers opened their quest for a national championship with a bang Monday
morning, pounding out 16 hits in a 16-9 win against the Kansas Intimidators
during pool play of the NBC Summer Nationals at Bettis Family Sports Complex.
The Rattlers (17-7)
jumped to leads of 5-0 after the first inning, 8-0 after the second and 13-2
after the fourth. Tyler Patty stroked two doubles and single and J.D. Garetson
added a double and single to lead the hit parade.
“They did most of
their damage early,” Rossville manager Brett Cowdin said of Patty and Garetson.
“They got us off to a good start. We
hit the ball pretty well.”
Patty, a
right-hander, also pitched five innings to earn the win.
The Rattlers will
continue pool play at 9 a.m. Tuesday,
with bracket play expected to begin late Tuesday or Wednesday. The Summer Nationals tournament features
players 19 years old and younger. The double-elimination championship will
conclude Thursday.

The Rossville Rattlers plan to participate in the 2012 National
Baseball Congress Summer Nationals at the Bettis Family Sports Complex at Lake
Shawnee on July 23 - 26th. The Summer Nationals is an open national tournament
for teams featuring players 19-years old and younger. The winner of the
tournament will be crowned National Champions for that age bracket.
Teams are divided into four pools for games Monday and Tuesday,
then the pool winners
advance to a double-elimination bracket.
The Rattler's current roster features players from 18 and older.
However, the roster will be reduced to fall within the rules of the
tournament so no player over the age of 19 will be eligible. The
tournament roster can have up to 17-players.
The Rattlers are currently 15-7 on the season, with one game
remaining against the Lee's Summit Monarchs on Sat., July 21.
The Rattlers will Sunday off before starting the 4-day, double
elimination tournament on Monday, July 23rd at 9:00 am, against the Kansas
Intimidators.

Ali is a graduate of Hayden High School (2004) and is a

Kenzie Cordt and Dane Olejnik were united
in marriage on October 22, 2011, at the First United Methodist Church in
Wamego.
The bride is a 2007 graduate of St. Marys High School and the
University of Kansas. She is the daughter of John and Cindi Mitchell, St. Marys
and Chuck Cordt, Lawrence. She is the granddaughter of Larry and Peggy Yingling
and Louise Fry (all of Topeka ), Kay (and the late Ray) Mitchell of Frankfort
and Walter and Betty Cordt of Leavenworth .
The groom is a 2004 graduate of Rossville High School and
Washburn University . He is the son of Bob and Kathy Olejnik, Rossville and the
grandson of Bill and Tina Olejnik and Dolores (and the late Joe) Floersch, all
of Rossville.
The couple now lives in Lawrence where both are employed by Payless
Shoesource.

Barbara
A. Haines, 74, passed away Sunday, July 08, 2012 at her home in
Rossville.
She was born December 5, 1937 at ElDorado, the daughter of Orval George
and Naomi Evelyn Danner Rose.
Barbara was united in marriage to Victor Eugene Haines on March 8, 1974
at Independence. He preceded her in death on October 7, 1996. She was also
preceded in death by her mother, a sister, Sandra Lemon and a brother, Kenneth
Rose. Survivors include two brothers, Larry and George Rose both in ElDorado; a
sister, Connie Welch, Anchorage, Alaska.
Barbara joined the Catholic faith on April 3, 2010 and was a member of
St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Rossville. Mass of Christian Burial will be
celebrated at 10:00 A.M.
Wednesday, July 11, 2012 at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Rossville.
Interment will be in the Penwell- Gabel Cemetery, Topeka. A Rosary will be
recited at6:00 P.M. Tuesday,
July 10, 2012 at Piper Funeral Home in St. Marys. Memorial contributions may be

Leaving the Manhattan Mercury has been an
extremely difficult decision. Leaving the journalism field as a whole has
arguably been the toughest decision I’ve ever faced, but it was a decision I
needed to make. In two weeks, my time with The Mercury will be finished as I
have accepted a job in Kansas City. I will still free-lance whenever I get the
opportunity to, but outside of that, I won’t be a full-time writer anymore.
I will undoubtedly miss the industry and the
people I’ve worked alongside for the past three years. First, I’d like to thank
my editor Josh Kinder. I was fresh out of college, and he worked tirelessly to
get me hired full time at the Mercury. I was incredibly lucky to be afforded
such an opportunity. Here I was, a 22-year old right out of Kansas State who
was given a tremendous opportunity to cover K-State athletics. It was a dream
come true and I will be forever grateful for it.
There are so many memories. As crazy as it
sounds, my favorite memory is the trip to Salt Lake City with Josh for the
third and fourth rounds of the NCAA tournament. What a fun ride that season
was. That ride to Salt Lake, not so much. We hit a blizzard, got snowed in at a
Holiday Inn in Wyoming, which jacked its rates up knowing we couldn’t leave. We
woke up at 5 a.m. the next day knowing the snow had stopped for hours and
figured the roads were open. After all, we had a press conference that
afternoon to make in Salt Lake. When we went to leave, the hotel receptionist
told us the roads weren’t open. We proceeded to argue with her how ridiculous
it was that they still weren’t open. Hours later, when we finally did get on
the road, we learned why. We nearly flew off the icy road probably 50 times,
encountered around a 1,000 semis all annoyingly attempting to pass each other
at the same speed. And then after a couple of hours of driving, we encountered
a massive wreck that shut the highway down, resulting in a lengthy delay. Josh
hated Wyoming so much he searched online how to get a “I hate Wyoming t-shirt”
and became one of four members on facebook to join the “Wyoming sucks” facebook
group. But we made it to Utah the night before the game and took in some
thrilling basketball games.It was a trip filled with laughs.
I will save you the expense of other stories
and will wrap this up soon. I’d like to thank all of my colleagues I’ve gotten
to know well in the industry — all of whom I consider friends. That includes:
D. Scott Fritchen, Rob Cassidy, Tim Fitzgerald, Kellis Robinett, Austin Meek,
Kevin Haskin — all writers I have an immense amount of respect for. I’d like to
thank Manhattan Broadcasting employees Rob Voelker, John Kurtz, Matt Walters
and Tyler Dreiling. I consider all four of them friends, and I would like to
thank them for allowing me to be on the radio with them from time to time over
the past three years. It was something I really enjoyed doing. I’d like to
thank K-State sports information members Kenny Lannou, Tom Gilbert, Randy
Peterson, Ryan Lackey and David Wiechmann for being a huge help to me during my
time.
Finally, I would like to thank my fiancee, Vanessa,
for being my backbone during all of this. The life of a journalist can be a
crazy schedule, and she has put up with it over the past 18 months (as has our
black labrador retriever, Maverick). Also, thank you to my parents as well as
my future in-laws and my closest friends for all their support (you know who
you are) and to all the coaches and administrators I’ve worked with.
When you get right down to it, I’m a really
lucky guy. For the past three years I’ve gone to games for a living. I absolutely
loved it. I will certainly miss it. But like I said, this is an opportunity I
couldn’t pass up. It’s a new challenge and something I must take on. Remember,
it’s not as if I’m moving to some inhabited land. I will only be a couple of
hours away and will still be in Manhattan often.

The Bulldawg Booster Club is preparing for another busy
year. As a member of the Booster Club your membership donations ($20.00 per
family/alumni - $50.00 per business) are the hardest working dollars you’ll
spend.
Attached is an application for for membership which you can download and
return.
During the 2011-2012 school year the Booster Club provided
breakfast during summer weights, gave gifts for state bound teams, purchased an
ad in the Shrine Bowl program congratulating Gage Steckel and started a
Scholarship fund. In addition, Booster Club purchased pizza for the Snake
Dance and junior high Fall Dance. We also provided Bulldawg apparel for our
bulldawg fans! .
For the upcoming 2012-2013 school year we are looking for
special projects to help show our support for our students and student
athletes. If you have any ideas, please attend our booster club meetings
on the second Wednesday of every month at 7:00 pm in the High School Commons
Area beginning in August.
We are looking forward to an exciting year ahead and we
hope that you will join us in supporting these great students and
athletes! If you are interested in volunteering for any of the Booster
Club events, there will be sign-up sheets at school enrollment or you can
contact an officer.

Vena Mae Thompson, 87, of Rossville,
passed away Tuesday, July 3, 2012 at he Rossville Health & Rehab Center
with her granddaughter and great-granddaughter by her side.
She was born February 5, 1925 at Rossville, the daughter of Dewey
and Florence Higgins Countryman. Vena was a 1943 graduate of Rossville High
School and was the senior class president. She had lived most of her life in
the Delia community. Vena was a homemaker and raised Limousin-Angus cattle
until she was 80. She worked for the Jackson Co. Water District No. 2 for over
30 years. Mrs. Thompson enjoyed playing cards and dominoes, dancing, and
spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Vena was a member
of the Delia Presbyterian Church and participated in their quilting group.
She married Christopher Donald Thompson on September 11, 1945. He
preceded her in death in 1986. She was also preceded in death by her parents, a
daughter, Janet Mulanax, son-in-law, Irvan Mulanax, and son, Donald Ray
Thompson. Survivors include grandchildren, Gary (Shelly) Mulanax, Hoyt, Janie
(Kenny) Quiett, Delia, Brian Thompson, Rossville, and Chris (David) Mulanax,
San Francisco, CA; great-grandchildren, Chelsey Quiett, Jeffrey Lyda, Zachary
Quiett, Jaycob Mulanax, Dalton Quimby, Madison Mulanax, Samantha Thompson,
Wyatt Lickteig, Alyssa Thompson, Hunter Quiett, Jenna Thompson and Jessica
Thompson; a great-great granddaughter, Ava Quimby; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 10:00
A.M. Saturday, July 7, 2012 at the Delia Presbyterian Church. Interment
will be in the Adrian Cemetery. Mrs. Thompson will lie in state after 2:00 P.M.
Friday, July 6, 2012 at Piper Funeral Home in St. Marys, where the family will
receive friends from 6:30

Betty Joyce Dick, age 70, of Willard, Kansas, passed away July 1, 2012.
She was born May 29, 1942 in Pettis Township, Missouri, the
daughter of Sam and Nettie Clark.
She was preceded in death by her husband James Dick, her parents,
3 brothers; Charles Clark of Pleasant Valley, MO, Bill Clark of Parkville, MO,
and James Clark of Cameron, MO, 3 sisters; Lillian Pennington of California,
Helen Bledsoe of Kansas City, KS, and Pauline Slaughter of Belton, MO, and a
grandson Dominic Needham of Redlake, MN.
She is survived by her son John Needham and wife Marsha, and
grandson Joshua Needham of Redlake, MN and 3 great-grandchildren, 1 brother
George Clark of Excelsior Springs, MO, 3 sisters; Donna Campobasso, Parkville,
MO, Nancy Decker, Foster, MO, Sharon Clark, Butler, MO and several nieces and
nephews.

Connie Sue Mulanax, 53, passed away, Sunday, June 24, 2012 at St.
Francis Hospital in Topeka. She was born December 17, 1958 in Topeka, the
daughter of John Vernon and Bonnie G. Groff Keller.
Connie grew up in the Delia and Rossville communities and
graduated from Rossville High School in 1976. Connie had worked for St. Francis
Hospital and Medical Center from 1980 until 1995 and later for Blue Cross and
Blue Shield of Kansas from 1997 until she retired for health reasons. She was
an avid KU fan and loved to do cross stitching, play cards and board games.
Mrs. Mulanax was preceded in death by her parents, an
infant sister, Cindy Lee Keller and by her sister Bonnie Bush. On August 30,
1980 she was married to David Jeanneret, they divorced. She married Donald R.
Mulanax on December 17, 1983 in St. Marys. He survives of the home. Other
survivors include her children, Erin Jeanneret-Lacey, Emmett, John Jeanneret, Topeka
and Levi Mulanax, Emmett; two brothers, Lindsay Skip (Karen) Keller, Emmett and
Michael V. Keller, Rossville; four grandchildren, Jayden, Emma, Landon and
Lilee; along with many nieces and nephews.
She will lie in state after 2:00 P.M. Wednesday at the funeral home where the family
will receive friends from6:30 until 8:00 P.M. Funeral services will be at 10:00 A.M. Thursday, June 28, 2012 at Piper Funeral Home in
St. Marys. Interment will be in the Delia Cemetery. Memorial contributions may

Ardeth Lehman, 74, died Sunday, December 18, 2011 at her home in Ft.
Worth, TX. Memorial services will be Wednesday, June 20 at 4 p.m. at the Auburn
Cemetery, Auburn, KS. Ardeth
was born March 23, 1937, daughter of John and Cleo Maus. She grew up in the
West Union community and graduated from Rossville High School in 1955.
Survivors include brothers Paul Maus of Emmett, Ewelyn Maus of Lawrence and
several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and
sisters Julia Smith of Harveyville and Paula McClure of Topeka.

The
third annual RHS alumni dinner and dance was held Sat. June 2, 2012 at the
Citizens Potawatomi Center in Rossville. Enjoying the catered dinner were
115 alumni and guests. Several other alumni attended the social hour
starting at 4:00 p.m. A short business meeting was held after the
meal. Former RHS cheerleaders came forward and led the group in the
School Song. Election of officers and a vote on a revision of the
Foundation by-laws was held. The winners of $750 scholarships given by
the Foundation were introduced. Dylan Brown and Ashley Brummer each gave
a short speech thanking the group and telling of their future plans. Also
introduced as guests were two members and two coaches of the RHS girls
track team. This was the third year in a row to win the Class 3A
state track championship. The meeting closed with a roll call
of all alumni at the dinner. The oldest alumni attending were two
classmates of the Class of 1939. They were Luella Olson Sage and Dale
Davis. Visiting and a dance followed. The 4th annual
celebration will be held June 1, 2013.

With 6 runs in the first three innings, the Rossville Rattlers
took an early lead and coasted to a 14.2 victory over the Kansas Titans on Thursday at
Joe Campbell Memorial Stadium.
The Rattler's Alex King (Barton CCC) racked up four RBIs on three hits
-- a double in the fourth, single in the fifth, and a homer in the
sixth inning.
The Rattlers scored five runs in the third inning. The
home team added another three runs in the fifth. Derek Hammer's
(Highland CC) double started the offense by knocking in Sam Reesor (RHS)
and Dylan Backman (Neosho CCC). King then brought Hammer home with
his single.
Rossville added five more runs in the sixth..
King's three-run home run in that inning also scored Mitch Streeter
Pittsburg S. U.) and Trevor Bowers (Cloud CCC).
Alex Pierce (Highland CC) gave up just one hit, allowed no
earned runs, walked one and struck out eight during his three innings of work.

Four Wildcats – Austin Fisher, Joe Flattery, Caleb Wallingford and Matt Wivinis – are playing for the
Rossville Rattlers, who will conduct their inaugural season in 2012… Fisher
went 5-for-8 with a RBI in his first two games of the summer as he registered
two hits against Joplin on Thursday before a three-hit outing against the Midwest
Bruins on Friday… Wivinis started and took the loss Thursday against Joplin
when he surrendered two runs on four hits with three walks and three strikeouts
in 4.1 innings… Flattery and Wallingford have not pitched yet for Rossville,
which is 3-1 in its first four games.

Josh Fank, 30, owner and
operator of Fank’s Roofing and Remodeling, was on his way home to Rossville
from a job when he became involved in a spectacular three vehicle accident on
westbound I-70 about a mile from Carlson Rd. An eastbound Honda
went into the median, flipping end over end, striking two westbound vehicles
including Mr. Fank's.
Five people in the three vehicles were injured, but none of
the injuries appeared life-threatening.

Recent RHS graduate Gage Steckel has signed a Letter of Intent to play
baseball this coming year for Washburn University. The All Mid-East
League catcher for the Dawgs had a .328 batting average and .489 on base
percentage this past year, and he was third on the team with 25 RBIs.
Gage is playing for the Rossville Rattlers this summer.

The Rossville Rattlers beat the Midwest Bruins 11-0 in seven innings at Joe
Campbell Stadium on Sunday after a six-run sixth inning to move to 3-1 for the
season--the three wins coming in the last three days.
Luke Bordewick (Pittsburg S.U.) racked up five RBIs on four hits
for Rattlers. He homered in the third inning, doubled in the first and fourth
innings, and singled in the sixth inning. The Rattlers scored two
runs in the first inning on Bordewick's double and led the rest of the game.
Caesar Brown (Cloud Co. CC) had an excellent outing in his two
innings of work, allowing just one hit, no earned runs, no walks, and striking
out three batters.

Rossville
Jr./Sr. High School had two seniors this year who completed the required
curriculum as set forth by the Kansas Board of Regents and earned the
designation of State of Kansas
Curriculum Completer. In
order to earn this distinction, students must have completed 4 years of
English, 4 years of Math, 3 years of Science, 3 years of Social Studies, and 2
years of Foreign Language. The students who met these criteria are Rachel Beiker and Kelsey
Crow.
All Curriculum
Completers are then eligible to be considered for an additional award.
The Kansas Board of Regents on behalf of the Kansas Legislature ranks these
Curriculum Completers based on their GPA and ACT scores. Kelsey Crow was also designated as a 2012 Kansas State Scholar.
Rachel was the
class Salutatorian and Kelsey was the class Validictorian.

life in an auto accident during his Senior year. His classmates and family began the
award in Benny’s memory. It
is awarded to an RHS student who displays many of the qualities Benny

American Legion Jimmy Lillard Post 31 awards two students each year from
Rossville High School with a certificate and medal. The students are
chosen by the faculty based on the criteria of courage, honor, leadership,

The Doug
Perine Memorial Scholarship was
established this year and awarded at Rossville High School during the annual Spring
Awards Night. The Perine family wanted to honor Doug, a long time community
figure, by presenting the $500 scholarship to an RHS student planning to
continue their education in an area related to medicine. Ilona Miller was the
first recipient of the award. She will attend Baker University in the fall to
pursue a degree in physical therapy. Ilona has also receivedBaker academic and softball scholarships.

Mr. Jim Dodge announced the winners of the Kansas
Masonic Grand Lodge Essay Contest at the annual Spring Awards Night
held at Rossville High School. This year’s subject was “Who is the most
prominent Kansas figure from its 150 year history?” Jason
Logan, a Junior at RHS, wrote the winning essay on Dwight D. Eisenhower.
Three runner-up awards were also given: Nathan Julian, an RHS 2012
graduate, wrote on William Allen White; Kelsey Crow, an RHS 2012
graduate, wrote on Robert Dole; and Darcy Smith, a junior at RHS,
wrote on Amelia Earhart.

Kelsey
Crow received three scholarships at the annual Spring
Awards Night held at Rossville High School. She was presented the $150 Pete Darting Memorial Scholarship by Mr. Kenny Darting and Mr. Rod Brown. The Darting
Scholarship was established in 2008 by the Darting family to honor Mr. Darting,
who was an avid supporter of the Rossville Dawgs.
Kelsey had previously received the Custom Wood Products Scholarship. This $1000 renewable scholarship was
established by Donald and Pamela Lake to further Custom Wood’s commitment to
the communities of Rossville and St. Marys.
Kelsey was also awarded the P.E.O. Scholarship. This $300
scholarship is awarded annually to young ladies from each of the area high
schools. She has also received the KSU Leadership Scholarship, the Topeka
Panhellenic Scholarship, and the YWCA Future Leader Scholarship. She will
continue her education at Kansas State University in the fall to study
BioChemistry.

Chris Hadsall received the Kenny Hillebert Memorial
Scholarship at the annual
Spring Awards Night held at Rossville High School. This is a $200 award given
by Ken and Carol Hillebert in memory of their son Kenny. Kenny grew up
and attended school in Rossville and was in a fatal car accident during his
Junior year. The scholarship is awarded annually to someone who reflects the
type of person Kenny was, including showing respect for others and community and
school pride. He also received theRon Monhollon Memorial Scholarship,

Dylan Brown received several scholarships during the annual Spring
Awards Night held at Rossville High School. He was awarded the $200H & R Block
Scholarship, which
is donated by H & R Block of Silver Lake and is based entirely on a hand
written application and essay.
Dylan received the Mathew Gustafson
Memorial Scholarship, a $200 award presented annually by Shirley
and David Gustafson and their family in memory of their son Mathew, who was a
student at Rossville High School. He was also awarded the $500 Cole Arnold Memorial Scholarship,
presented annually by Toby and Ann McCullough in memory of their son Cole who
died in a car accident the summer before his Senior year.
The Rossville High School Alumni Association, represented by Mrs.
Helen Lytle, awarded Dylan the $600 RHS Alumni Scholarship. The
Association was founded in 1998 and has awarded over $7500 to deserving

The Rossville Booster Club began a new tradition
this year of awarding a scholarship to a student participating in a KSHSAA

State University in the fall to major in Athletic Training.

Rebeka
Duran was the recipient of three scholarships at the annual Spring Awards Night
held at Rossville High School. She received the $200 Les Hallmark Memorial Scholarship,
which was established by Dorothy Hallmark and is awarded annually in memory of
Les who was an Art teacher at Rossville High School for many years.
Beka received the Cecile Zlatnik Memorial
Scholarship of
$250. This scholarship is awarded annually to recognize individuals who
demonstrate outstanding character, service, and leadership.
Beka was also presented the Duane Parr Memorial
Scholarship of
$500, which was established by J.D. Parr and his family and friends as an
endowment to honor Mr. Parr, who passed away in January of 2006. Since the
Parr family has a strong interest in music, the recipient must have
participated in high school band. Beka participated in band all four years at
RHS and will attend Emporia State University in the fall, where she plans to
major in Elementary Education and Spanish.

Lee's Summit Monarchs 7-3 Saturday night at Joe Campbell Stadium.
The Rattler offense was led by J.D. Garetson 's 3-run shot in the
7th inning putting the game away for good.
The Rattlers are back in action Sunday afternoon June 3rd, at
1:00 PM, at Joe Campbell Stadium in a rematch against the Midwest Bruins.

Mrs. Lois Schoemann, age 86, of Topeka since 2002, passed away May 31,
2012.
Lois lived on a farm in the Sandy Hook area about 3.5 miles SE of St.
Marys for 55 years before moving to Topeka. She worked in the teaching
profession for many years in various capacities, including being a 4H leader.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 A.M. Monday, June 4, 2012 at Immaculate Conception Catholic
Church in St. Marys. Interment will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, St. Marys. Mrs.
Schoemann will lie in state after 6:00
P.M. Sunday, June 3, 2012 and
there will be a prayer vigil at 7:00
P.M. at Piper Funeral Home in

Naomi E.
Ganson, 92, passed away Sunday, May 27, 2012 at the Midland Hospice House in
Topeka.
She was
born April 11, 1920 at Union Star, MO, and moved to the Rossville
community in 1943 and to Willard in 1952. She had an antique shop in her home
and had run the Willard grocery store for several years.
Survivors include two daughters, Elizabeth (Pendleton)(56)
Miller, Topeka and Marilene (Pendleton)(59) Stockman, Rossville; nine
grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 10:00 A.M. Thursday, May 31, 2012 at
Piper Funeral Home in St. Marys. Interment will be in the Rossville Cemetery,
Rossville.

RHS senior Mindy Wilson has signed a Letter of Intent to
participate in Track and Field at Ft. Hays State University in Hays, KS for the
coming year. Mindy was won several state championships in her four years
at Rossville in helping the school win the state 3A championship the last 3
years. Her specialties are the 300 hurdles and 100 and 200 meter dashes as well
as being on the relay team.

Vivian H. Parr, 89, of Lawrence, formerly
of Baldwin City and a long time resident of Rossville, passed away Saturday,
May 26, 2012.
She was born December 8, 1922 in Hoyt, Kansas, the daughter of
George and Mayme (Cox) Tolin. She was a graduate of Hoyt High School in 1940.
She attended Strickler s Business College in Topeka. Mrs. Parr was employed by
Kansas Power & Light in Topeka and later worked for Silver Lake State Bank
from 1971, retiring in 1986. She was a member of the Rossville United Methodist
Church.
Vivian married Duane I. Parr on December 20, 1947 in Topeka. He
preceded her in death on January 9, 2006. Survivors include a son, J.D. Parr
and his wife Nancy, Baldwin City, KS; a daughter, Patti Wilmoth and her husband
John, Sanger, TX; her grandchildren, Annie Parr Ammons and her husband, Trey of
Overland Park, Ellie Parr of Baldwin City, Laura Wilmoth of Lewisville, TX and
Kathryn Wilmoth of Denton, TX; a sister, Ferne Morse of Topeka and a
sister-in-law, Mary Tolin of Topeka. She was preceded in death by a sister,
Lorene Williamson; two brothers, Joyce and Gerald Tolin.
A funeral service will be at 1 p.m., Wednesday, May 30, 2012 at
the Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel, 1321 SW 10th Ave., Topeka. Interment will
follow at Rossville Cemetery. The family will receive friends an hour prior to
the service on Wednesday. Memorial contributions may be made to Duane and
Vivian Parr Memorial Scholarship Fund, in care of Silver Lake Bank, 209

Mandy Wilspn and Shannon Parr and their 4 year quest for excellence and how
they claimed three straight 3A State Championships.

Jim and Jan Dodge of Rossville will celebrate their 50th wedding
anniversary with a reception for relatives and friends on Sunday, June 3, 2012,
from 2:00-4:00 p.m. at the Rossville Christian Church, 411 Spruce, in
Rossville. The couple was married on Sunday, June 3, 1962, at the church.
Their children and spouses are David and Colleen Dodge, Topeka,
and Jerry and Karen Manhart, Shawnee. They have five grandchildren: Casey,
Darrin and Danielle Dodge; Abbie and Chad Manhart.
Jim is a retired member of Sheet Metal Workers Union Local #2,
formerly Local #77. He retired from Stevenson Co., Inc., Topeka, in 2001. Jan
retired from the U.S. Bank in 2001.

Behind dominating performances by seniors Mindy and Mandy Wilson
and Shannon Parr, the RHS girls pulled off another 3A State Title in
Track and Field.
Parr's High Jump of 5-10 is the third best mark in the nation this year
for HS girls and followed her win the the 100 Hurdles.
Mindy lost her 300 M Hurdle crown from last year by only .02 seconds in
what looked to be a dead heat.
Mandy won both the 100 and 400 but was edged out in the 200.
Rossville claimed the title with a dominating performance in the
1,600 relay with the Wilsons and Parr teaming with freshman Andrea
Rietcheck to win by more than five seconds in 4:08.80. The Dawgs
accumulated 74 points to runner up TMP-Marians 48 points.

Only 3
events completed on Friday, none of which is important to the Dawgs.
In some of the preliminaries, Mindy, Mandy and Shannon are doing
very well, and the 1600 M relay team was first in the preliminaries.
The finals will be on Sat., May 26, at Wichita.

Though it seems like they’ve been at
Rossville forever, the farewell tour for the Wilson twins, Mandy and Mindy,
finally is here. The duo has been nothing short of spectacular during their
four-year career, leading the Bulldogs to two state titles and combining to win
nine state gold medals. Mandy is looking to complete the career sweep of the
400 and has the top time in 3A this year at 58.2, though Scott City’s Kelly
Wycoff isn’t far behind (58.3). The title that has eluded Mandy is the 100,
where she was third last year, but she’s got the top time in 3A this year.
She’ll also challenge Wycoff in the 200 with Mindy also in the field in both
races. Centralia’s Michael Glatczak is the only boys’ area qualifier in the
100, 200 and 400, but will have his hands full to win any of the three.

Eleanor Baumchen, 94, passed away Tuesday, May 22, 2012 at the St. Marys
Manor.
She was born September 22, 1917 at Delia, the daughter of Peter
and Nellie Grace Lane. Mrs. Baumchen grew up in the Delia community and
graduated from Delia High School.
She was married to Albert Baumchen 2/10/45 in Delia.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 A.M. Friday, May 25, 2012 at Immaculate Conception Catholic
Church in St. Marys. Mrs. Baumchen will lie in state from 9:00 A.M. until service
time on Friday morning at the church. Interment will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery,
St. Marys.

class of male runners in the 15K Spring Burn in Topeka on May 19.
The top three finishers were: 1. Bob Wenger, Topeka,
