CAPITAL-JOURNAL AREA ATHLETE OF WEEK: ISAIAH LUELLEN, ROSSVILLE | WRESTLING SENIOR AND RILEY TUBBS, WABAUNSEE | WRESTLING SENIOR
LUELLEN’S PERFORMANCE: Battling back from a knee injury that threatened to end his wrestling career, Luellen capped a perfect 23-0 season with a dominating 12-4 major decision win over Plainville’s Jordan Finnesy for the Class 3-2-1A state championship. The title was Luellen’s second straight, and he finished his career with a 130-18 record, two state titles, a runner-up finish and a fourth.
TUBBS’ PERFORMANCE: After beating returning state champion Ryan Johnson, of Norton, 9-6 in the 132-pound semifinals at the Class 3-2-1A state tournament, Tubbs had no trouble securing his second state title, beating Scott City’s Kaden Wren 5-0 in the championship match. Tubbs also won a 126-pound title in 2016 and posted two runner-up state finishes, going 45-3 this year and 169-11 in his career.
