George Love Passes Away

George C. Love, 94, Rossville, formerly of Wetmore, died on Monday, November 23, 2020 at Stormont-Vail Hospital in Topeka.

George was born on December 29, 1925, in Elmont, Kansas just north of Topeka, the oldest son of Charles and Elizabeth Nissen Love.

George’s family moved to Wetmore when he was four years old; he attended school at Wetmore and graduated from the 8th grade. As a young man he helped his father on the farm. He joined the U.S. Army on September 21, 1944, he stationed in Philippians, and was in the Asiatic Pacific campaign, earning a bronze star. He was discharge on November 29, 1946 from Fort Beale, in California at the rank of PFC. George was employed by E and R Construction in Wetmore for 22 years; he later worked for Wetmore School District as a janitor, until retirement.

On July 28, 1973, he married Mary Wanda Peery Stubbs, at the Nemaha County Court House in Seneca. The couple resided in Rossville; they were married for 45 years before her death on March 2, 2019.

George loved to play the spoons, the harmonica and karaoke. He enjoyed dancing, and did so whenever he got the chance. He often could be found visiting with friends at the local legion in Rossville or wherever he could strike up a conversation. He was gifted at repairing small engines.

He belonged to the Levick-Barrett Post 282 of the Wetmore American Legion and the V.F.W., where he was a life time member.

Besides his wife, Wanda, he was preceded in death by his parents, Chuck on April 21, 1970 and Elizabeth “Lizzy,” on August 11, 1973; his brother, Harold “Joe” Love on October 20, 2009; and his sister, Blanche Eisenbarth on January 10, 2014.

He is survived by Anita Lamberson of Rossville; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Military graveside services will be on Saturday morning, November 28, 2020 at 10:30 A.M. at the Wetmore Cemetery in Wetmore.
