Bulldawgs Roll Over Caney Valley

Rossville put up eye-popping numbers in its win against Caney Valley on Friday. What makes the totals even more impressive is that they were almost all accumulated in the first half.

Jacob Bradshaw rushed for 369 yards and three touchdowns, and the Bulldawgs scored on every possession of their 67-31 Class 3A section win to reach sub-state for the third straight season.

All of Bradshaw’s yardage, and all but 13 of Rossville’s points, came in the first half, and a running clock was implemented just four minutes after halftime, with the Bulldawgs up 61-12.

Rossville (11-1) will host top-seeded Nemaha Central (12-0) next Friday.

“We had a couple good schemes we were able to take advantage of,” Rossville coach Derick Hammes said. “It’s a group effort. Kids were blocking really well up front, we had some good ball fakes and the tempo we play at. You put all that together, and good things can happen.”

It’s been no secret the Bulldawgs’ gameplan centers on their senior quarterback. The state’s touchdown leader started the game with an 80-yard run and capped the three-play opening drive with a touchdown.

Caney Valley answered with a score of its own, as Benjimen Thornton dumped a short pass off to Cole Griffin, who leapt across the pylon to make it 7-6.

“We had some early issues defensively,” Hammes said. “I don’t think we were quite in tune to what we needed to be.”

While it appeared early on the Bullpups and Bulldawgs might engage in a shootout, Rossville quickly showed it had far more firepower.

Bradshaw ran for a 69-yard score on the next possession, and Caney Valley’s next drive ended on a blocked field goal.

Another 50-plus-yard run by Bradshaw set up a Dawson Hammes touchdown and gave the Bulldawgs a 21-6 first-quarter lead.

In the second, Bradshaw had rushes of 54 and 65 yards and added passing and rushing touchdowns. Hammes scored again before halftime, in addition to a pair of 2-yard touchdowns from Trevor Balch and Perry Foster.

With several backups in and the clock running, Caney Valley cut into the margin considerably. Baylor Mechiori extended a drive with a 25-yard run on a fake punt that led to a touchdown, then the Bullpups recovered two onsides kicks and added two more touchdowns to make it 61-25.

After earlier interceptions by Reed Miller and Trevor Balch, Cole Schumacher returned a third Bulldawgs’ pick 50 yards in the fourth quarter to stop the bleeding.

A 40-yard run by Foster on 2nd and 35 helped run down most of the clock before a 10th and final touchdown put Rossville back ahead by 42.

“We’re here, and that’s where you want to be obviously,” Hammes said. “I always feel like you need to make improvements, and I feel like this group still has some potential left in them.”

Nemaha Central Next Up For Dawgs

SENECA — Up 14-6 after one quarter, Nemaha Central outscored Wellsville 21-0 in the second and third quarters to blow open Friday’s Class 3A quarterfinal game for a 42-14 win, earning a berth in the state semifinals for the first time in more than two decades. The Thunder (12-0) will travel to two-time defending champion Rossville (11-1), which blew past Caney Valley 67-31.

Ryan Hasenkamp threw for 260 yards and four touchdowns and ran for another score for the Thunder. Hasenkamp hit Luke Haverkamp on scoring tosses of 49 and 58 yards and also connected with Trenton Henry on an 8-yard score and Dylan Enneking for a 35-yard strike. Mitchell Henry added a 13-yard touchdown run in the third quarter to help stretch Nemaha’s lead.

Wellsville finished 10-2 as Trajen Smith threw for 149 yards and a touchdown and Reece Williams ran for a score and caught the touchdown pass.

Bulldawgs Get Big Win Over Caney Valley

    Jacob Bradshaw had 349 yards rushing in the first half to spearhead a  54-12 half-time Rossville lead.  The Dawgs finished the game with a  67-31 victory.

Walter Brown Obituary

      Walter Wayne Brown went to be with the Lord on Monday, November 7, 2016. Walter gave the gift of life by donating his organs. 
      Walter was 80 years young and is survived by his wife, Jeannine; six children; 18 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren.

Football Playoff Capsules

CANEY VALLEY (9-2) AT ROSSVILLE (10-1) — Rossville cleared a major hurdle in its quest for a three-peat, outlasting Sabetha 34-28 on the road last Saturday. The Bulldawgs rode a huge game from Jacob Bradshaw to the victory with the senior quarterback rushing for 269 yards and throwing for 207 yards with three total touchdowns, pushing his state-leading combined rushing and passing touchdown total to 44 this year. Cole Schumacher had 11 catches for 159 yards and a touchdown, pushing his season stats to 897 yards and 15 touchdowns. Caney Valley rolled past Osage City 43-16 as Baylor Melchiori rushed for 190 yards and four touchdowns and Matthew Sampson added 132 yards rushing.

WELLSVILLE (10-1) AT NEMAHA CENTRAL (11-0) — Nemaha Central reached the quarterfinals for the first time since 1997, knocking off No. 1 Silver Lake 21-14. The Thunder scored 21 straight points in the second and third quarters, keyed by David Delaney’s recovery of a blocked punt in the end zone, and then stopped the Eagles inches short of a first down on fourth-and-1 at the Thunder 17 with 1:02 left. Ryan Hasenkamp was held to just 108 combined rushing and passing yards, but scored on a 3-yard run in the second quarter and Mitchell Henry added the game-winner on a 5-yard scoring run in the third. The Thunder meet Wellsville in a rematch of the 1985 quarterfinal, which the Eagles won 7-6. Wellsville advanced to the quarterfinals for the third straight year with a 27-22 win over Galena. Reece Williams scored on runs of 49 and 14 yards, Daryon Winton had rushing and receiving touchdowns and Trajen Smith threw for 188 yards in the win.

    The volleyball banquet will be Sunday, Nov. 13 at 6 PM in the Commons Area at RHS.  Each family to bring a side dish and their own drinks.   Meats, plates, and utensils to be provided.

Local Election News

      Vic Miller,  RHS graduate of 1969, won the 58th district seat with no Republican opposition.  The former Shawnee Co. commissioner defeated two Democratic rivals in a 3 man primary race.

      Rossville librarian Adrienne Olejnik lost to Rep. Ron Highland, a Wamego Republican who chairs the House Education Committee.  The contested district included parts of Shawnee, Wabaunsee, Riley and Pottawatomie counties.

    Walter Brown of Rossville passed away Monday, Nov. 7.   More info will be added when available.

Jeffrey Glidewell Passes Away

Jeff Glidewell passed away Saturday afternoon November 5, 2016 near Rossville Kansas in a hang gliding accident. Jeff died doing what he loved.

Jeff Glidewell, 54, of Rossville was born October 30, 1962, in Topeka Ks, the son of John and Patricia Glidewell. Most of his life was spent in and around Topeka. He graduated from Highland Park High School in 1980, and spent time in the Air Force in Montgomery, Alabama. There he married Carrie Lynn Tardiff, also of Topeka. To this union was born one son, Justin Drew Glidewell, who preceded him in death on June 7, 2014. He was married to Linda Pope on August 15, 1998. Jeff and Linda managed the Rossville Liquor Store.

Left to mourn are Jeff’s parents, John and Pat Glidewell of Topeka, wife, Linda Glidewell, Rossville, Ks, brothers, John W Glidewell (Kim), Jim V Glidewell (Jill), all of Topeka, Ks., Jay C Glidewell (Jan), Meriden, Ks., sister, Julie A Glidewell, Dallas Tx, three grandchildren, Andrew and Aceline Glidewell of Scranton, Joshua Sneden, Texas, two step-sons, Jason (Ashleigh) Pope, Lawrence, Robbie Pope, Hudson Florida, three step-grandsons, a step-grand­ daughter to be born in January, and two lonely cats and a host of friends.

Private inurnment services will be held at the Silver Lake Cemetery.

A celebration of Jeff’s life will be held at the Rossville City Park on Sunday, November 13th from 1:00 until 3:00.

Mitch Doucet Fundraiser

Sat. Nov. 12 5PM -2 AM CST at Rossville Legion Post 31

Our friend, Mitch Doucet, has given so much over the years – to individuals, families, and to our communities. 

We all now have a chance to give back. 

Mitch has been battling throat and mouth cancer for a while now. He has undergone surgeries and is currently going through radiation and chemo treatments. The medical bills and medication expenses have gotten steep and it’s time for us to rally around him and Kim the way our communities are known to do.

In addition to prayers, there are currently two ways we can support Mitch and Kim. There has been a "Mitch Doucet Benefit Fund" set up at Rossville and St. Mary's Banks. All donations will go directly to medical and living expenses for Mitch and Kim. 

The other way to support them is the fundraiser on November 12th. So far, it will include a pulled pork dinner and live entertainment by the band “15 Minutes Late” out of Holton. If anyone would like to help and/or add other fundraising efforts, please contact Penny Jamvold or Melissa Doucet-Caton.
