Dorothy Mergenmeier Passes Away

    Dorothy Mergenmeier, 92, who lived most of her life in St. Marys passed away Nov. 12.  She may be known to some Rossville people as she worked at Katie's Corner and Floor Devader Covering.

Anthony Viergever (64) Passes Away

Anthony “Tony” John Viergever, 72, of Grove, Oklahoma, passed away on Thursday, November 8, 2018.
He was born January 9, 1946, in Silver Lake, Kansas, the son of Andy and Lula (Simmons) Viergever.

He graduated from Rossville High School in 1964. In 1967 he joined the Kansas National Guard and was deployed during the Vietnam Conflict with the U.S. Army. There he earned National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Sharpshooter with M-14 & M-16 and 1 Overseas Bar.

Tony was a chef and owned and operated two pizza restaurants in Missouri for many years.

He enjoyed fishing and boating as well as training horses.

He married Judith Elaine Walthall in the late 1960s, together they had two sons, Rodney Lynn and Duane Steven Viergever. They later divorced. On April 25, 1980, he married Dolores Elayne Lovell in Miami, OK. She preceded him in death on August 18, 1997. Then on June 8, 1998, he married Leota Faye Fry in Miami, OK, she survives. Other survivors five sibling: Don Viergever, Auburn, KS; Rose Marie (Jo) Anderson, Auburn, KS; Larry (Janet) Viergever, Sarasota, FL; David (Karen) Viergever, Morton, IL, and Darrell (Debbie) Viergever, Mayetta and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Helen and Kathy Viergever; a brother, Glen Viergever and son, Rodney Lynn.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 15, 2018, at Parker-Price Cremations, Funerals, and Receptions, 245 NW Independence Ave., Topeka, KS. Interment will follow with military honors at Dover Cemetery, Dover, KS. The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 14, 2018 at the funeral home.

Eight On District Honor Band

Congratulations to the following students who auditioned on Saturday, November 10th and were selected to the 1A-4A Northeast Kansas Music Educators Association (NEKMEA) District Honor Band.  We set a school record with 8 students making the band, and 1 alternate.  They will meet and rehearse ONCE with about 70 other high school musicians from NE Kansas at Topeka-Seaman High School on Saturday, December 1st, giving a concert that afternoon at 2:00 PM.

Making the District Honor band also allows them to audition on Saturday, January 5th at Salina-Lakewood Middle School for a spot in the 1A-4A All-State Band that performs on February 23rd, 2019 at the Century II Performing Arts Center in Wichita.

Horak Gets TD In PSU Win

    The Pittsburg State Gorillas won their final regular season game of the year 41-0 on Nov. 10.    They will now go into NAIA playoffs.
    The running back trio of Tucker Horak, Keynan Scheurich and Tyler Adkins all found the end zone in the contest. Horak carried the ball 11 times for a game-high 81 yards with a three-yard touchdown on the Gorillas' opening possession of the game.

Humboldt Rallies For Win Over Dawgs

ROSSVILLE — On a field dotted with snow, Rossville was done in by a two-headed attack of Humboldt, its season ending with a 24-22 defeat in the sectional round of the Class 2A playoffs.

Enduring a 20-degree temperature at kickoff, the Humboldt Cubs saw senior quarterback Dagen Goodner and junior tailback Conor Haviland account for all but 35 of their yards from scrimmage.

Rossville jumped to an early 10-0 advantage, but the visitors kept chipping away. After the Bulldawgs went up 16-8 early in the third period, Humboldt answered with a scoring drive, seized momentum and held on.

The teams traded two touchdowns apiece in a wild third quarter. The difference in the game turned out to be Humboldt’s ability to succeed on two-point conversions, while Rossville failed on both extra point attempts in the period.

Goodner carried the Cubs for the first half and finished with 116 yards rushing and two touchdowns. But it was Haviland, quiet in the first half with just one yard on seven carries, who turned the game around. When Goodner was shaken up on a carry, Haviland took direct snaps for runs of 27 and five yards, scoring on the second rush. He then ran in for the conversion to tie the game at 16-16.

On the ensuing Rossville possession, Haviland picked off a pass and returned it to the 18. Humboldt scored on the next play and never relinquished the lead. Haviland ran for 70 yards on six carries in the second half.

Rossville, which saw its six-game win streak snapped, finished the season with an 8-3 mark. The Bulldawgs were led by senior quarterback Garrett Carver’s 101 yards rushing and 83 yards passing.

Sophomore Tyree Sowers, who opened the game with a 5-yard touchdown run, caught an 18-yard scoring toss from Carver late in the third period that pulled the Bulldawgs within two. But Rossville failed to run in the conversion and the third quarter ended 24-22 in favor of the Cubs.

Rossville only possessed the ball twice in the fourth period, and failed to pass midfield on each possession. Humboldt chewed up the clock with a long drive that stalled at the Rossville 39. The Cubs then threw Rossville for losses on three consecutive plays and the Bulldawgs failed on a fourth-and-27 attempt.

Humboldt, one of four teams with perfect 10-0 records entering the sectional round, will take on Riley County, which upset Silver Lake in overtime.

Humboldt fumbled on its first two possessions, staking Rossville to an early lead. Sowers scored from 5 yards out following the first turnover. But a penalty wiped out Sowers’ second scoring run, forcing the Bulldogs to settle for a 23-yard field goal by Joao Lovisi.

Trailing 10-0, the Cubs rallied to block a Rossville punt late in the second quarter. Humboldt seized the momentum and mounted a 49-yard drive, highlighted by a 27-yard toss from Goodner to Tucker Hurst and capped by a 5-yard scoring run by Goodner. A two-point conversion narrowed the Rossville lead to 10-8 just seconds before halftime.

Progress Of Dawg-Humboldt Game

First quarter:
Humboldt received the oening kick-off but fumbled during their first two drives.  With the temperature around 20 degrees, handling the ball was problematic.  The Dawgs scored a TD with 3:49 remaining in the first.  In their second drive,  Rossville scored a TD that was called back with a penalty and the Dawgs had to kick a field goal right at the end of the quarter to lead 10-0.

Second quarter:
Rossville's defense was stout against the run stuffing the Humboldt ball carriers for loss or short gain nearly run attempt.  But,  they were able to complete several long passes to keep drives alive and finally scored a TD and 2 pt conversion with 25 seconds left in the half.  Rossville up 10-8 at the half and looking forward to receiving the KO after half-time.

Third quarter:
The Dawgs scored on the second play after they received the kick off  taking only 31 seconds off the clock.  Dags up 16-8.  Humboldt's offense finally started moving the ball on the ground as well as the air and scored and added the 2 point conversion to tie the game,  and then they added another TD to go up 24-16.  The Dawgs added a TD but failed on 2 pt. conversion to end the quarter down 24-22.  A wild quarter with 4 of the game's six TDs scored in that quarter.

Fourth quarter:
The two teams dueled to a standstill during the fourth quarter with neither team scoring.  So the final score remained 24-22 in favor of the Humboldt Cubs,

Football Playoffs Nov. 9

RILEY COUNTY (8-2) AT SILVER LAKE (10-0)

Riley County avenged one of its two losses with a 33-14 win over Southeast-Saline last week in the Class 2A second round. Now the Falcons get a shot at the other team that beat them in Mid-East League rival Silver Lake. The undefeated and No. 2-ranked Eagles led just 10-0 at halftime of the first meeting, but shut down Riley County’s explosive offense, allowing just a pair of second-half touchdown runs by Mikey Waggoner and Deon Barnes. Mason Griffin, meanwhile, threw for 243 yards and three touchdowns in a 31-12 Silver Lake win. Griffin has thrown for 1,758 yards and 25 touchdowns while getting picked off just once and Christian Stoner has run for 1,062 yards and 16 touchdowns. Waggoner has run for 962 yards and 15 touchdowns, while Falcon quarterback Garrett Harmison has thrown for 1,445 yards and 19 touchdowns.

Prediction: Silver Lake over Riley County

HUMBOLDT (10-0) AT ROSSVILLE (8-2)

Last week’s playoff wins couldn’t have gone any differently for Rossville and Humboldt. Rossville started strong, building a 21-7 halftime lead on Maur Hill before holding on for a 21-14 win thanks to a last-minute defensive stop inside its own 10. Humboldt, meanwhile, led Osage City just 8-0 at halftime before exploding in the second half for a 30-6 win. Conor Haviland ran for 192 yards and two touchdowns in the win for the Cubs in their first big test of the season. For the year, Haviland has rushed for 1,533 yards and 30 touchdowns. Quarterback Dagen Goodner has added 1,817 combined rushing and passing yards with 31 touchdowns. Garrett Carver ran for 150 of his 195 yards in the first half last week against Maur Hill and for the season has run for 1,163 yards and 18 touchdowns and thrown for 1,181 yards and nine touchdowns. Humboldt has allowed just 65 points all season, but Friday’s win was the first over a team with a winning record.

Prediction: Rossville over Humboldt

Harold Rogers Passes Away

     Harold Gene Rogers, 90, passed away at home on October 27, 2018 in Middleton, Idaho. 

     Harold was born on October 10, 1928 to Albert and Evelyn Rogers in Kearney, Nebraska. He married Marcia Hagerty in 1952. While living in Nebraska and Iowa they had three sons. The family moved to Rossville, Kansas in 1959, where Harold was the manager at an alfalfa dehydrator plant for over 10 years. Harold loved to raise pheasants and peacocks, hunt and fish. In 1970, the family moved to Winnemucca, Nevada where he worked as a mechanic for the Humboldt County School District. While working for the school district, he met and married Marilyn Lesh in 1976. Harold and Marilyn later moved to Middleton, Idaho where Harold continued to work as a mechanic until he retired.
     Harold is survived by his wife, Marilyn Rogers, brother, Frank (Janet), sons William (Brandis) and Michel (Karen), step-daughter Kay (Blaine) and numerous nieces, nephews and grandchildren
Harold is preceded in death by his parents, son Gary Rogers, step-sons Brian and Carson Clelland, and his sisters Betty, Elaine, Pat and Marlene.
