Shirley Marstall Passes Away


St. Marys—Shirley J. Marstall, 84, passed away Tuesday, December 3, 2019 with family by her side.
 She was born February 21, 1935, in Walnut Township in Marshall County, Kansas the daughter of Elton B. and Lela M. Cox Godfreson.  Shirley graduated from Waterville High School in 1953, where she was the Homecoming Queen.  She also graduated from Brown Mackie Business School in Salina.
 Shirley worked at Southwestern Bell in Topeka until she started her family.  After raising her children she worked at the St. Marys Star and Dr. Verne Claussen’s office until her retirement.
 Shirley loved to cook and sew.  She was a Girl Scout leader and Den Mother.  She served on the Election Board for many years.  Shirley was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and was a very active member of the Altar Sodality helping with the church picnic and funeral dinners.  She was a member of the St. Marys Literary Club.  She and her husband Norman, whom she met through CYO, wintered in Texas for over 20 years.
 On October 1, 1960, she was united in marriage to Norman F. Marstall in Marysville.  He preceded her in death on September 26, 2018.  She was also preceded in death by her parents and an infant brother.
 Survivors include her children, Tony (Amy) Marstall, Eskridge, P.J. (Jana) Marstall, Emporia, Beth (John) Martinson, Maple Hill and Dave Marstall, Topeka; 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
 Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 A.M. Friday, December 6, 2019 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.  Interment will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, St. Marys.  The family will receive friends on Thursday, December 5th from 5:00 until the rosary at 7:00 P.M. at Piper Funeral Home in St. Marys.  Memorial contributions may be made the St. Marys Literary Club for scholarships or Avalon Hospice and sent in care of Piper Funeral Home, 714 Maple Street, St. Marys, Kansas 66536.  To leave online condolences go to www.piperfuneralhome.com.

NEKMEA Honor Band Groups

Rossville will be well represented at the Northeast District of the Kansas Music Educators Association this Saturday, December 7th. In addition to a great number of students being selected for honor groups, Rossville Director of Bands and Choirs, Mr. Garrett Jones, is the recipient of the 2019 NEKMEA Outstanding Young Band Director Award.

The following students will be performing with their honor ensembles on Saturday. Choir rehearsals and concerts are at Topeka High School, while Band rehearsals and concerts are at Topeka Seaman High School.

Sara Shinn (17) Makes President's List

Sara Shinn, a sophomore at Highland CC was on the President's list for the Spring semester of 2019.  To make the President's List,  the student must have a GPA of 4.0

Stacy Keithline (18) On Dean's List

Freshman Stacy Keithline of Rossville was on the Dean's List at Highland CC in the Spring 2019 semester. To attain the Dean's List,  the student must maintain a GPA of 3.5 - 3.9

RHS Boys Basketball Preview

Coach: Eammon Bradley (3rd year).
Last year’s record: 2-18 (1-8, 6th in league).
Postseason: lost in 2A sub-state first round.
Returning starters: (4) Kaleb Badura, G, 5-10, sr.; Tyree Sowers, F, 6-0, jr.; Bo Reeves, C, 6-4, jr.; Kaiden Brown, G/F, 5-8, jr.
Other returners/newcomers: Randy Morelli, F, 6-2, sr.; Aiden Garcia, G, 5-10, so.; Raphael Cooney, G, 6-1, so.; Brody Lietz, G, 6-1, so.; Eddie Brockamp, C, 6-3, sr.
Outlook: Bulldawgs struggled with young team with lone wins coming against Oskaloosa and Wabaunsee. ... Leading scorer Taegan Sumner (16.7 ppg) graduated but almost everyone else returns. ... Sowers is lone returning all-league performer and averaged double-digit scoring.

Streit and Rabe each averaged 3 ppg. ... Bulldawgs will have to rely on freshmen to contribute right away.

Susan Anspaugh Passes Away

Susan Marie Anspaugh was welcomed into the arms of Jesus on November 20, 2019. She was born on November 15, 1954 to John and Stella (Holler) Cain in Holton, Kansas.

She was married to Glenn E Anspaugh on November 18, 1973 and together they had two children, Tanya Marie and Craig Ryan. She was blessed with two beautiful grandsons that she adored, Ryan Ross and Carson James. Susan and Glenn were divorced on September 6, 2019.

Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, November 27, 2019 at Rossville Christian Church. The family will be welcoming friends on Tuesday, November 26, 2019 at 6 p.m. also at Rossville Christian Church.

Rossville Wins 2A State Cheer Contest

On Saturday,  Rossville  took first place in the 2A  class at the  State Cheer competition in Topeka. Rossville came out on top by about 3 points with a score of 84.00. Lyndon finished third with a 79.00 score in the finals.

Glen Broaddus Passes Away
