Alumni Scholarship Foundation Notice

The RHS Alumni Scholarship Foundation would like to thank all alumni for their generous donations. We have now accumulated $24,894.06, which includes a $1,000.00 grant from the Prairie Band Potawatomi Tribe that will be used towards our scholarships.

We had our first meeting for 2014 to plan our alumni dinner, which is our main fund raiser. The members voted to give two $1,000.00 scholarships . We also voted to keep in reserve $ 988.40 toward future scholarships because of market conditions. We also received $1025.00 in memorial contributions for Maxine Strimple for our 2014 budget.

Remember all donations, memorial contributions and other gifts received are tax deductable.  

Please help us spread the word to any RHS graduate that you may know. We are always looking for email addresses and mailing addresses.

Rattlers Looking For Player Housing

 The Rossville Rattlers summer collegiate baseball club is asking families within the   Rossville, Topeka, and Silver Lake areas who would be willing to become a part of our Housing Program to contact the team.

For the past two years, the Rattlers have relied on local families to take on the responsibility of housing a player and allowing him the chance to work on his dream of becoming a Major League Baseball player while playing for our hometown Rattlers.

From late-May through late-July, the family would have the chance to watch their player develop while giving him the experience of learning about our area and its many unique qualities.

We would appreciate if anyone in the local media could spread our need for assistance both on-air and in-print or through social media channels to allow us to meet our demand. As an organization, we thank you for your assistance.

Rossville Invitational Track

    The Rossville Invitational Track and Field Meet was held on Friday, April 25.
    The RHS girls team was 4th of 13 teams.   No one finished in the top two in any event,  but several 3rd and 4th place finishes gave the team a respectable finish for the day.
    The RHS boys finished 8th of 14 teams.   The Dawgs picking up first place medals were:  Zhaquarius Miller in the 100 meter dash, Kyle Parr in the 110 meter hurdles and also the long jump.  Clayton Rubio was second in the 3200 meter run.  The 4 x 800 meter relay team added another first place finish in a growing string of victories.

Scholars Bowl Team Has Winning Record

     The RHS Scholars Bowl team was 2nd at the Randolph-Blue Valley tournament  and  third in the MEL league tournament this year. They finished  the season with an overall winning record in matches of 21-19.

ROSSVILLE — Given their preferences, Rossville coach Kenny Swart and Perry-Lecompton coach Kent Houk would have loved to come away from Friday’s baseball doubleheader with a sweep.

Yet considering each team entered the twinbill with undefeated records, a split really wasn’t all that demoralizing for either as well.

Rossville handed Perry its first loss of the season in rather emphatic fashion, routing the Kaws 10-0 in the opener. Perry got its revenge, however, returning the favor by dealing the Bulldogs their first setback with a 7-5 victory in the nightcap.

“That’s a good ball team and a team like that, with the kind of pitching they ran out, they can do well in 4A,” Swart said. “They’ve got good arms, solid defense and have good hitters. It was a good matchup for us and I think our team will grow by playing a good team like that.”

Houk agreed.

“You have to have games like this to see what kind of character your team has,” Houk said. “It’s easy to beat teams 15-0 — you can be happy doing that all day long. But what do you do when you have a little bit of adversity? I was really pleased with how we responded and that’s a really good team over there.”

Really good would describe the effort Rossville got from senior ace Marcus Catron. The righty completely silenced Perry’s bats in the opener, holding the Kaws to just one hit in the game.

He got all the support he needed when the Bulldogs plated a run in the bottom of the first, but Rossville broke the game open with a six-run fourth inning. Jack Steckel smacked a three-run double to key the big inning and Devin Morris followed with a two-run homer.

The Bulldogs ended things in the fifth with three more runs, outhitting the Kaws 9-1 in the contest and taking advantage of five Perry errors

“Marcus threw really well in the first game, threw a lot of strikes,” Swart said. “We played solid defense behind him and you can’t ask for anything more out of your starting pitcher than what he gave us.”

Catron used his bat to get Rossville going in the second game, delivering an RBI single in the first for a quick 1-0 lead.

After being shut down for the first two innings, however, Perry’s bats finally awoke. Zach Linquist stroked an RBI double down the left field line in the third, starting a three-run frame and stretch where the Kaws scored in four straight innings.

Rossville had an answer for Perry early, countering with three run of their won in the third with Catron belting an RBI double off the centerfield fence and Corbin Horak driving in another. The Bulldogs matched Perry’s run in the fourth with one, but the Kaws tied the game in the fifth on Charlie Shuck’s RBI single.

Linquist then took the mound and shut down Rossville the rest of the way, striking out the side in the fifth and fanning six in three innings. Perry broke through in the sixth when Linquist and Bowen Cunningham led off with singles and three Rossville errors led to the decisive runs.

“A good ball club like that is going to take advantage of any extra outs you give them,” Swart said after watching his team commit six errors in the second game. “We harp on the kids to stay focused in and we really haven’t had to deal with that much this season, But you get in a tight ball game like that, you live and you learn.”

Perry finished the second game with 13 hits, salvaging the split to move to 10-1. Rossville fell to 9-1.

“We haven’t lost a doubleheader in two years, and they kind of did the same thing to us last year,” Houk said. “They beat us 13-4 in the first game and then we came back and beat them 2-1 in eight innings. I’m really proud of the guys for coming back because that’s not an easy thing to do when you have one hung on you like we did. A few years ago, that wouldn’t have happened but now we believe in ourselves a whole lot more.”

Mitchell Porter Goes to FBLA Nationals

Mitchell Porter, a freshman, placed 3rd at State FBLA in Introduction to Business.

He will compete at the national level this summer in Nashville, TN June 29-July 2.

2012-2013 RHS Awards Night

ROSSVILLE HIGH AWARDS

Rossville High has an Awards Night each year recognizing students who have received honors and/or scholarships.  This is a re-cap of  last years awards (2012-2013school year) for those who missed the announcements.

During the annual Spring Awards Night at Rossville Jr./Sr. High School held on May 8, 2013, the following awards were presented:

KSU OUTSTANDING MATH & SCIENCE AWARD

Each year, in conjunction with Kansas State University’s College of Engineering, Rossville High School’s math and science teachers are asked to nominate one individual they believe is the best student in each of these two subjects. This year, teachers selected Morgan Cahill to receive this honor.

AMERICAN LEGION AWARDS

The American Legion Jimmy Lillard Post 31 awards two students each year from Rossville High School with a certificate and medal. The students are chosen by the faculty based on the criteria of courage, honor, leadership, patriotism, scholarship, and service. This year, presented by Mr. Kenny Wichman, the American Legion awarded Jacob Pletcher and Lexi Zlatnik with the honor.

TOPEKA CAPITAL-JOURNAL ALL STATE ACADEMIC AWARD

This award is sponsored by the Topeka Capital-Journal. Every Kansas high school selects one individual to represent their school based on academic and extracurricular performances. Nathaniel Jelinek was named to the Topeka Capital-Journal Honorable Mention All-State Academic Team.

KSHSAA CITIZENSHIP AWARDS

The Kansas State High School Activities Association each year awards one male and one female student from each high school with a citizenship award. Individuals receiving this award must demonstrate respect for fellow students, the citizens of the community, adults, and their country. They must also show respect and tolerance for others, good sportsmanship, and good citizenship. Cole Brecheisen and Kaylee Brown were given this award.

DALE DENNIS AWARD

The Dale Dennis Excellence in Education Award was established in 1996 by Kansas administrators to honor the long and valuable service that Dale Dennis gave to Kansas education. It is based on Citizenship, Service, Scholarship, and Common Sense. The award was presented to Rain Schultz-Pruner.

BENNY STACH AWARD

Benny Stach was a Rossville student who lost his life in an auto accident during his Senior year. His classmates and family began the award in Benny’s memory.

It is awarded to an RHS student who displays many of the qualities Benny possessed. Nominations and the final selection are made by the faculty based on several qualities, including friendliness, helpfulness, understanding, and warmth for others. Kyle Hammer was presented the award.

U.S. ARMY SCHOLAR-ATHLETE AWARDS

The U.S. Army presented the Scholar-Athlete Awards to Dalton Catron and Amanda Hurtig. Recipients of this award are determined by faculty nominations and must demonstrate commitment to both academics and athletics.

U.S. MARINES OUTSTANDING STUDENT AWARDS

The U.S. Marine Corps presents awards in three different categories. The Scholastic Excellence Awards were presented to Nathaniel Jelinek and Rebecca Sage for their academic achievements. The Semper Fidelis Award was given to Rachel Jensen for excellence and commitment to the band program. The Distinguished Athlete Awards were presented to Scott Shinn and Janeigh Dantzson for their accomplishments in sports throughout the school year.

JOHN JOHNSON LEADERSHIP AWARD

The John Johnson Leadership Award was created to honor Mr. Johnson for his years of dedication to the students of Rossville High School. The award began in 2007 and is presented annually to the student who demonstrates quiet leadership and service. Hailey Thornburg was chosen as the seventh recipient of this award.

SENIOR INSPIRATION AWARD

The Senior Inspiration Award was presented to Amanda Borcherding-Garcia. Amanda has maintained a positive attitude and constant smile while facing many challenges and stretching herself way beyond her comfort zone. She has gained confidence and poise that will prove invaluable in her journeys next year at Washburn University.

MICHAEL KELLER AWARD

This year, Rossville High School began a new award to honor the long and dedicated service provided to our school by Mr. Michael Keller. Mr. Keller began his teaching career in 1978 and has dispensed his wisdom, sense of humor, and discipline to countless students over this 35-year period. The recipient of this award must display strong citizenship, respect for others, attention to details, and have excellent attendance and punctuality. The 1^st recipient of the Michael Keller Award was Jason Logan.

YWCA FUTURE LEADER

      Amanda Hurtig was recently awarded a scholarship at the 25^th Annual YWCA Leadership Luncheon in Topeka, KS. Presented the award as a YWCA Future Leader

       Amanda is an intelligent young woman with high moral character and an incredible work ethic, holding a 4.0 GPA and ranking 4^th in her graduating class. She is a Kansas Scholars Curriculum Completer and Kansas Honors Program Award recipient. She is always open-minded, respectful, and accepting of others’ differences and is a wonderful role model for younger students and teammates.

       Her activities include cross-country, track, Art Club, FBLA, and Scholars’ Bowl. She is also the Senior Class Secretary and Winter Royalty Queen. She has qualified for state in both cross-country and track and won awards for artwork and FBLA competitions. She volunteers for the Anthony Bates Foundation Heart Screening and the Topeka Helping Hands Humane Society.

      Amanda is the daughter of James and Kathy Hurtig and plans to attend Kansas State University in the fall to major in Pre-Med.

PRUDENTIAL SPIRIT OF COMMUNITY AWARD

     The Prudential Spirit of Community Award program was created to honor students at various levels and is based exclusively on volunteer community service. Prudential has awarded RHS Junior Caleb Falk with a Certificate of Achievement for his dedication of many hours to the betterment of others. He began his volunteer journey by working at the Topeka Rescue Mission and is now participating in the Active Water campaign to raise money to help provide clean drinking water to the people of Africa. He has also made a personal pledge to drink only tap water, meaning no bottled water or pop, and is now in week 43 of this pledge.

RHS SENIORS RECEIVE WASHBURN AWARDS

Three Rossville seniors were honored at a recognition reception held on Washburn University’s campus. The students were among over 100 Shawnee County seniors receiving awards. Each also received a backpack with the Washburn University insignia. Rebecca Sage and Lexi Zlatnik each received Academic scholarships based on GPA and ACT scores.

Lexi Zlatnik and Taylor Tomson received Presidential scholarships. All Shawnee County high schools are allowed to award two per school. Rossville High School awards these prestigious scholarships to the top two academic Washburn bound students each year. The award is for $1000 and is renewable for all four years they attend.

MULTIPLE SCHOLARHSHIPS AWARDED TO JASON LOGAN

Jason Logan was the recipient of five scholarships at the annual Spring Awards Night held at Rossville High School. He was awarded the $300 H & R Block Scholarship, which is donated by H & R Block of Silver Lake and is based entirely on a hand written application and essay.

The Rossville High School Alumni Association, represented by Mrs. Helen Lytle, awarded Jason the $1000 RHS Alumni Scholarship. The Association was founded in 1998 and has awarded over $9400 to deserving students in this 15-year period. The award’s recipient must meet high standards set out by the association and be a good representative of RHS as they move on through college and begin their career. 

Jason had previously received the Custom Wood Products Scholarship. This $1000 renewable scholarship was established by Donald and Pamela Lake to further Custom Wood’s commitment to the communities of Rossville and St. Marys. 

This is the 1^st year for the RHS Opportunity Scholarship, which is provided by an anonymous donor. Recipients were chosen based on GPA, ACT, resume, strength of schedule, and an essay over an experience that made an impact in their life. Jason received the $1000 scholarship.

The Rossville United Methodist Church, represented by Toby and Ann McCullough, also provided Jason with a $1000 scholarship. He plans to attend Butler Community College in the fall to major in agricultural engineering. Jason has previously been awarded Livestock, Academic, and Vocational scholarships through Butler, as well as the Shawnee County Master Gardener and Dover Community Foundation Scholarships.

LES HALLMARK SCHOLARSHIP

Abigail Sharp received the $200 Les Hallmark Memorial Scholarship at the annual Spring Awards Night held at Rossville High School. The scholarship was established by Dorothy Hallmark and is awarded annually in memory of Les who was an Art teacher at Rossville High School for many years. Abby has competed in league art competitions over the last 4 years and placed every piece entered. She received 5 medals at league this year, including a 1^st place in advanced pencil drawing and 2^nd place in overall 2D. She plans to attend the Univ. of Kansas in the fall to major in Theatre and has also received a KU Academic Scholarship.

RACHEL JENSEN RECEIVES SCHOLARSHIPS

Rachel Jensen was presented the Duane Parr Memorial Scholarship of $500 at the annual Spring Awards Night held at Rossville High School. This scholarship was established by J.D. Parr and his family and friends as an endowment to honor Mr. Parr, who passed away in January of 2006. Since the Parr family has a strong interest in music, the recipient must have participated in high school band. Rachel participated in band all 4 years, received a “1” rating on her flute solo at regionals, is a section leader, and helped the RHS band receive a 2^nd division rating at state.

Rachel was also awarded the $500 Cole Arnold Memorial Scholarship, presented annually by Toby and Ann McCullough in memory of their son Cole who died in a car accident the summer before his Senior year. 

The P.E.O. Scholarship of $300 was presented to Rachel by Lynette Hudson. This scholarship is awarded annually to young ladies from each of the area high schools. Rachel plans to attend Kansas State University in the fall to major in Horticulture. 

LEXI ZLATNIK AWARDED SCHOLARSHIPS

Lexi Zlatnik received the Kenny Hillebert Memorial Scholarship at the annual Spring Awards Night held at Rossville High School. This is a $200 award given by Ken and Carol Hillebert in memory of their son Kenny. Kenny grew up and attended school in Rossville and was in a fatal car accident during his Junior year. The scholarship is awarded annually to someone who reflects the type of person Kenny was, including showing respect for others and community and school pride.

Karen Dick presented Lexi with the $200 Rossville Booster Club Scholarship, which began in 2012. The recipient must have participated in a KSHSAA activity throughout high school. Lexi plans to attend Washburn University in the fall to major in Business Marketing, where she has received the Washburn Presidential and Academic Scholarships. She has also received the Golden City Sertoma and honorary Cecile Zlatnik Memorial Scholarships.

TAYLOR TOMSON RECEIVES AWARDS

Mr. Jim Dodge announced the winner of the Kansas Masonic Grand Lodge Essay Contest at the annual Spring Awards Night held at Rossville High School. This year’s subject was “In marketing the State of Kansas to a national audience, what would be the major focus of your campaign?” This year, Taylor Tomson wrote the winning essay.

Mrs. Helen Lytle presented the $1000 RHS Alumni Scholarship to Taylor. The Alumni Foundation began in 1998 and has awarded over $9400 to deserving students in this 15-year period. The award’s recipient must meet high standards set out by the association and be a good representative of RHS as they move on through college and begin their career.

Taylor also received one of the $500 RHS Opportunity Scholarships provided by an anonymous donor. Recipients were chosen based on GPA, ACT, resume, strength of schedule, and an essay over an experience that made an impact in their life. Taylor plans to attend Washburn University in the fall to major in Nursing and has also received the Washburn Presidential Scholarship.

SCHOLARSHIPS AWARDED TO HAILEY THORNBURG

The Kaw Valley Education Association annually raises money and presents scholarships to an RHS and SMHS student planning to pursue a career in education. This year’s RHS award was presented to Hailey Thornburg by Mrs. Laurel Jackson at the annual Spring Awards Night held at Rossville High School. Hailey plans to pursue a teaching degree in elementary education at Kansas State University, where she has received a KSU Activity Scholarship.

The $300 Rossville Community Development Committee (RCDC) Scholarship was awarded to Hailey based on her achievements and community involvement. The award is given annually to recognize students who contribute to the community of Rossville.

Hailey was also presented the $1000 Rossville United Methodist Church Scholarship by Toby and Ann McCullough.

PERINE SCHOLARSHIP PRESENTED TO BORCHERDING-GARCIA

The Doug Perine Memorial Scholarship was established in 2012 and awarded at Rossville High School during the annual Spring Awards Night. The Perine family wanted to honor Doug, a long time community figure, by presenting the $500 scholarship to an RHS student planning to continue their education in an area related to medicine. Amanda Borcherding-Garcia was the 2^nd recipient of the award. She will attend Washburn University in the fall to pursue a degree in Nursing. Amanda has also received a Vocal Music Department Scholarship at Washburn and the Wamego Dutch Mill Scholarship.

RAIN SCHULTZ-PRUNER RECEIVES TWO AWARDS

Rain Schultz-Pruner received the Cecile Zlatnik Memorial Scholarship of $250 at the annual Spring Awards Night held at Rossville High School. This scholarship is awarded annually to recognize individuals who demonstrate outstanding character, service, and leadership.

This is the 1^st year for the RHS Opportunity Scholarship, which is provided by an anonymous donor. Recipients were chosen based on GPA, ACT, resume, strength of schedule, and an essay over an experience that made an impact in their life. Rain received the $750 scholarship. Rain plans to attend Kansas State University in the fall to major in Pre-Med/Biology. He has also received the KSU Achievement Scholarship.

PETE  DARTING MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIPS

Kaylee Brown received A $150 Pete Darting Memorial Scholarship at the annual Spring Awards Night held at Rossville High School. The award, presented by Mr. Kenny Darting, was established in 2008 by the Darting family to honor Mr. Darting, an avid supporter of the Rossville Dawgs. Kaylee plans to attend Marinello Cosmetology School and will begin classes only one week after her graduation from Rossville High School.

Jeffrey Escobar, a Senior at Rossville High School, also  received a $150 Pete Darting Memorial Scholarship. . Jeff plans to attend Highland Community College in the fall to study Animation.

Kyle Hammer also received a $150 Pete Darting Memorial Scholarship at the annual Spring Awards Night. Kyle plans to attend Kansas State University in the fall to major in Pre-Nursing.

RHS OPPORTUNITY SCHOLARSHIPS

This is the 1^st year for the RHS Opportunity Scholarships, which were provided by an anonymous donor. Recipients were chosen based on GPA, ACT, resume, strength of schedule, and an essay over an experience that made an impact in their life. 

 Haley Kelley received the $500 scholarship at the annual Spring Awards Night held at Rossville High School. She plans to attend Kansas State University in the fall to major in Pre-Veterinary Medicine.

 Darcy Smith received the $250 scholarship at the annual Spring Awards Night held at Rossville High School. She has joined the U.S. Army and plans to attend Kansas State University in the fall to major in Animal Science. She has also received the KSU Activity Scholarship.

Jacob Pletcher received the $750 RHS Opportunity Scholarship at the annual Spring Awards Night. Jacob plans to attend Butler Community College in the fall to major in Agricultural Communication. He has also received the Butler Livestock Judging, Academic, and Vocational scholarships.

Janeigh Dantzson received the $250 RHS Opportunity Scholarship at the annual Spring Awards Night.  Janeigh plans to attend Kansas State University in the fall where she will be a member of the KSU Women’s Rowing team and will major in Accounting.

Rebecca Sage was recently awarded a $750 RHS Opportunity Scholarship,at the annual Spring Awards Night. She will attend Washburn University in the fall to major in Nursing and has also received a Washburn Academic scholarship.

RACHEL TAYLOR RECEIVES 2 AWARDS

Rachel Taylor received two scholarships at the annual Spring Awards Night held At Rossville High School. The RHS Opportunity Scholarship of $250 was provided by an anonymous donor and awarded to Rachel. Recipients were chosen based on GPA, ACT, resume, strength of schedule, and an essay over an experience that made an impact in their life.

Rachel also received the Ray and Rita Mohr Scholarship,  which is sponsored by a Topeka couple and open to any senior in the state of Kansas.  The Mohr's are strong supportrers of education and wsanted to show that support by providing a $500 scholarship to a deserving student.  This is the first time that a Rossville student has ever received this award.  Rachel plans to attend Washburn University in the fall to major in nursing.    

RCDC  SCHOLARSHIP

Dalton Catron was awarded the Rossville Community Development Committee (RCDC) Scholarship at the annual Spring Awards Night held at Rossville High School. This $300 scholarship was awarded based on Dalton’s achievements and community involvement. The award is given annually to recognize students who contribute to the community of Rossville. ROSSVILLE HIGH SCHOOL ANNOUNCES CURRICULUM COMPLETERS

Rossville Jr./Sr. High School had four seniors this year who completed the required curriculum as set forth by the Kansas Board of Regents and earned the designation of State of Kansas Curriculum Completer. In order to earn this distinction, students must have completed 4 years of English, 4 years of Math, 3 years of Science, 3 years of Social Studies, and 2 years of Foreign Language. The students who met these criteria are Morgan Cahill, Amanda Hurtig, Taylor Hartshorn, and Abigail Sharp

All Curriculum Completers are then eligible to be considered for an additional award. The Kansas Board of Regents on behalf of the Kansas Legislature ranks these Curriculum Completers based on their GPA and ACT scores. Amanda Hurtig was designated as a 2013 Kansas State Scholar.

RHS ANNOUNCES NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY MEMBERS

    Rossville Jr./Sr. High School inducted 21 new members into the National Honor Society at the Spring Awards Night on May 8, 2013. Senior Amanda Hurtig; Juniors Brooke Channel, Briena Duryea, Tagen Lambotte, Skylar Olson, Samantha Thompson, and Therese VanderPutten; and sophomores Kennedy Anderson, Haley Brown, Lauryn Catron, Taylor Cooper, Makayla Crow, Breanna Ebert, Danielle Glotzbach, Brooke Hase, Breanna Hill, Corbin Horak, Taylor Kirk, Rachel Lord, Nick Reesor, and Andrea Rietcheck lit the candle of honor and recited the pledge as new members.

    RHS existing members are Seniors Kamryn Bittner, Kaylee Brown, Nathaniel Jelinek, Rachel Jensen, Jason Logan, Jacob Pletcher, Darcy Smith, Hailey Thornburg, Taylor Tomson, and Alexandra Zlatnik and Juniors Cheyanne Daniels, Hailey Dick, Caleb Falk, Macy Gillum, and Davis Warton.
    NHS officers for the 2013-2014 school year were recently elected and are as follows: President Caleb Falk, Vice-President Davis Warton, Secretary Hailey Dick, and Treasurer Makayla Crow.

RHS MID-EAST LEAGUE ALL ACADEMIC TEAM

The Mid-East League each year awards a medal to all students who have participated in at least 3 activities sponsored by the Kansas State High School Activities Association and have maintained a 3.5 Grade Point Average in the first 3 quarters of the school year. Horton Invitational golf

    The boys golf team competed in the 2014 Horton Invitational coming in fourth in the two man, four man, and six man teams.    Gabe Marney was the sixth place individual and Jordan Pickens came in fourteenth.
    Atchison won the two man team team event while Maur Hill won the four man event and Perry-Lecompton had the best six man score.

    The lone event winner from Rossville was Ashley Reitcheck who won the 400 meter run.    The boys 4 x 400 meter relay team and the 4 x 800 meter relay team each came in second,  as did the girls 4 x 400 meter relay.
    The RHS boys JV came in third and the girls JV came in 4th with several first and second place finishes.

Softball Team Splits With Wamego

  The RHS girls split their double header with the Wamego Red Raiders on April 17 losing the first 7-10,  but they came back strong in the night-cap winning that game 17-2.

Dawgs Get Two Easy BB Wins

The Dawgs clobbered the Wamego Red Raiders in two games on April 21,  scoring  Wamego  19 runs to one.

    In game one,  which the Dawgs won 9-1,  Thatcher Horak had three RBIs on a home run.  Marcus Catron also had three RBIs on two singles.  Corbin Horak added two RBIs on two sacrifice flies.  Tucker Horak pictched all seven innings allowing only 2 hits and no earned runs to keep his ERA at 0.00 after eleven innings thus far.  Tucker had seven strike-outs for the game.  

    In game two,  the Dawgs scored 8 runs in the 5th inning to end the game with a 10-0 margin.  Ethan Woodcock pitched all five innings allowing one hit and getting four strike-outs.  Corbin Horak had two RBIs off a double while going 1 of 2  At Bats and also having a walk.  Thatcher Horak had two singles in three At Bats to add two RBIs.  Adding one RBI each were:  Tucker Horak, Marcus Catron, Nick Reesor, and Christian Rodunner.

    The Dawgs are now 8-0 for the season.

Thelma (Smith) (51) Dick Passes Away

    Thelma Jean (Smith) Dick, age  81, formerly of Holton, passed away Sunday, April 20, 2014, at Lexington Park in Topeka, Kansas, with loved ones at her side.
    She was born September 20, 1932 in Pottawatomie County, Kansas, the daughter of Stanley and Emma Susan (Williams) Smith. She graduated from Rossville High School in 1951.
    She married James I. S. Dick on March 7, 1952, in the Presbyterian Church, of Rossville. They later divorced.
    Thelma retired August 18, 1994 after 29 year of service with the State of Kansas in the Motor Vehicle Division. She was a member of the First Baptist Church and served as a deacon and a member of the Dorcas Circle. Thelma was a loving and devoted mother, grandmother, sister and aunt and a loyal friend to many. She enjoyed her church and time spent with family and friends.
    She is survived by a daughter, Jana Lutz (Jerry) of Holton, and a son, Bruce Dick (Kim) of Delia and two sisters, Martha Miller, of Wamego, and Helen Fouraker, Miles City, Montana and 6 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Claude and Louis, and three sisters, Nona Rafferty, Dorothy Perry, Ruth Mahoney.
    Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m. Friday, April 25, 2014 at the First Baptist Church in Holton. Burial will follow in the Silver Lake Cemetery. Thelma will lie in state at Mercer Funeral Home in Holton through Thursday evening. VanVlecks Have a Boy

Willie and Danielle VanVleck of Rossville are the proud parents of a new baby boy born April 19 at Stormont-Vail.

Nancy Pelfrey Passes Away

     Nancy D. (Conner) Pelfrey, 55, passed away Saturday, April 19, 2014 at her home near Rossville after a 16 year battle with cancer.

     She was born on January 10, 1959 at Waco, TX, the daughter of Elbert and Opal Stem Conner.  Nancy graduated from Wabaunsee High School.

     Nancy was an LPN for Cotton-O’Neil for 22 years.

     She was preceded in death by her parents, step father, Walter L. Rice, Jr.; two brothers, Stephen E. Conner and Terry L. Conner.

     On May 26, 1979 Nancy was united in marriage to Randall G. Pelfrey in Rossville.  Randy survives of the home.

     Other survivors include, her daughter, Sara R. (Lewis) Tams, Rossville; her son, John R. (Chelsea) Pelfrey, Rossville; two sisters, Judy L. (Stephen) O’Neil, San Bernardino, CA, and Martha J. (Stephen) Cook, Topeka; a step-sister, Trudy K. (Gary) Filkins, Topeka; her brother, Jerry E. (Jaye) Conner, Topeka, two grandchildren Emma K. and Conner G. Tams, along with numerous Nieces and Nephews.

    The RHS boys golf team competed in the Osage Invitational on April 17.  The team standings were as follows:

Softball Team Gets Double Win at St. Marys

    The RHS softball team picked up two additional league wins defeating the St. Marys Bears 16-5 and 15-5 on April 17.   Their record is now 9-1 overall and 5-1 in league play.

Dawgs Shut Out Bears

    The RHS baseball team mauled the St. Marys Bears in two games on April 17 with both being shortened to 5 innings with the Dawgs leading 12-0 in the first game and 11-0 in the second game.  The Dawgs are now 6-0 for the season.
    In game one,  eight Dawgs had RBIs with shortstop Corbin Horak leading the team with three of the RBIs.  Zach Nitsch had two RBIs
    In game two,  third baseman Marcus Catron led the team with four singles in four times at the plate.  He scored three runs and brought his season batting average up to .750.

Royal Valley Invitational Track and Field

    Rossville High competed in the Royal Valley Invitational Track and Field Meet on April 15.

Dawgs Defeat Manhattan Twice in Softball

    The RHS softball team added two more wins on April 15 to push their record to 7-1.  They beat Manhattan 1-0 and 7-3.

Rattlers Add Final Six Players

The Rossville Rattlers are pleased to announce the final six signings for the summer 2014 team. The Rattlers are excited to welcome in three more area players, adding to our mix of local and national talent.

Tanner Triggs (IF - Washburn University) Tanner is a 6'2, 185-lb infielder who is a red shirt freshman at Washburn. Triggs is a 2013 graduate of Hayden High School where he lettered in baseball his final two years for the Wildcats. He earned all-city and all-league both years and helped his team win a 4A state championship as a senior.

 

Cody Renfro (IF - Silver Lake High School) Cody is a infielder from Silver Lake High School. Renfro was a 2013 All Mid-East League honorable mention during his sophomore season. Cody was also a member of the 3A State Championship team last season with Silver Lake.

 

Jeff Christen (Catcher/IF - Butler Community College) Jeff is a 6'0, 170-lb catcher/utility player with Butler Community College. Christen was a 2013 All Mid-East League first team selection out of St. Marys High School.

 

The Rattlers are also pleased to welcome back a pitcher from the 2013 squad.

 

A.J. Doolittle (RHP - Southwestern Oregon Community College) A.J. returns for his second summer in Rossville. Doolittle, a 6'1, 200-lb pitcher from Medford, Oregon, is finishing up his Sophomore season at SWOCC and is looking for a spot next fall. Currently he is attracting interest from Division I and Division II schools. In 27 innings last summer, he allowed 25 hits, 12 runs with 9 earned runs. His ERA was 3.00 as he racked up an impressive strikeout-to-walk ratio of 26-5.

 

We also welcome in two more Division I pitchers, both playing in the state of North Dakota.

 

Ellery Bresnahan (LHP - University of North Dakota) Ellery is a 5'8 left handed pitcher from Casselton, North Dakota. His senior year in high school, Bresnahan owned a 3-0 record with a 0.43 ERA and 28 strikeouts in 16.1 innings-pitched. A two-time American Legion Class B state champion, he finished 5-1 with 64 strikeouts in 30 innings-pitched as a junior. Ellery is currently a closer for North Dakota. Bresnahan was also named the 2013 Gatorade North Dakota Player of the Year.

 

Kyle McCulloch (RHP - North Dakota State University) Kyle, a 6'1, 180-lb right handed pitcher from Olathe, Kansas. Kyle played baseball for two years at Iowa Western Community College in Council Bluffs, Iowa. There he made 14 appearances as sophomore out of relief. McCulloch finished with a 2.30 ERA in 27 innings pitched while he struck out 21 and walked six. He was a member of 2012 JUCO World Series championship team that went 62-6. He was named 2010 Kansas Association of Baseball Coaches' Pitcher of the Year with Desoto High School.

    The RHS softball team picked up two additional league wins against Wabaunsee on April 11 to push their record to 3-1 in the Mid-East league and 5-1 overall.

Benjamin Simecka Passes Away

  Benjamin Joseph Simecka, 88, passed away on Wednesday, April 9, 2014 at the Rolling Hills Manor in Topeka.      He was born May 23, 1925 in Delia, Kansas, the son of Joseph and Mary (Cander) Simecka. Ben graduated from Delia High School in 1943 and farmed on the "Home Place"  until retirement.  On June 1, 1949 he was united in marriage to Norma Jean Fechner who preceded him on January 30, 2006.  Survivors include two daughters, Sheryl Gudenkauf (Mike), Topeka; Michelle Simecka, Montana; four sons, Joe Simecka (Coleen), Silver Lake; Dave Simecka, Delia; Mark Simecka (Tonya), Ozawkie; Bennie Simecka (Mary), Olathe;  9 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren, an additional great grandson expected July 2014.  One sister, Josephine (Simecka) Constant survives.  Ben was preceded in death by 2 grandchildren, 3 brothers & 3 sisters.  A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 AM Saturday, April 26, 2014 at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Rossville.    Private inurnment will be at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in St. Marys. Catherine (Martin) (50) Devader Passes Away

Catherine L. DeVader, 82, passed away Wednesday, April 9, 2014 at the St. Marys Manor.

She was born January 10, 1932 on a farm south of Rossville the youngest of 10 children  of Henry and Edith Burns Martin.  Catherine attended Rossville Schools.

She and her husband Joe owned and operated C&J Café in Emmett for several years.  Catherine later worked at Jeffrey Energy Center for several years.  She was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church and the altar sodality at the church.  Catherine was a member of the Citizen Band Potawatomi Nation and the Jolly Workers Club.  She was an avid sports fan.

On August 26, 1950 she was united in marriage to Joseph Charles DeVader at Rossville.  He preceded her in death on June 1, 2002.  She was also preceded in death by an infant son, Ronald L. DeVader and a daughter Roberta K. DeVader-Dale on February 22, 2011, and 7 siblings.

Survivors are four sons, Larry DeVader and Dave DeVader both of Topeka, Robert DeVader, St. Marys and Gerald “Chief” DeVader, Emmett; four daughters, Edith Fuller, Topeka, Loretta Scott and Marcia Wagner both of Rossville and Ranae Baker, Scott City; a brother, Charles Martin, Silver Lake; a sister, Betty Gibson, Topeka; 17 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren with 2 on the way.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 A.M. Saturday, April 12, 2014 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in St. Marys. Catherine will lie in state from 3:00 until 6:00 P.M. Friday, April 11, 2014 at the church where a rosary will be recited at 6:00 P.M.  Interment will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, Emmett.  Memorial contributions may be made to the Catherine L.
