Rezac Wins 200 M State Title

From the Capital=Journal:

WICHITA — Only moments before stepping into the blocks for the Class 3A boys 200-meter final on Friday at the State Outdoors, Mid-East League rivals Woodrow Rezac of Rossville and Brogan Renfro of Silver Lake made what some might consider a sacrilegious pact between two presumably heated rivals.

"Right before the race, we looked at each other and said, 'We're bringing that state title back to 24,'" Rezac said.

The insinuation being, that it didn't matter which did it, as long as the mission was accomplished. Which might seem odd given the intensity the Rossville-Silver Lake rivalry carries no matter what the sport.

But as Rezac put it, "We live only 10 miles away from each other, no sense being enemies. We all get along. Except when it comes to football. With football, it's full War on 24. That's how Rossville and Silver Lake are."

When Rezac made good on their pre-race pact, winning by a mere .01 seconds over Perry-Lecompton's Hunter Hess in 22.15 seconds, the friendly rivals celebrated his title. But at the same time, the rivalry juices were still there.

Rezac admitted that he "really doesn't like the 200," even though he's the school-record holder in the event. But after coming up just short of getting a title in his favorite event, the 100, finishing second to Holcomb's Zephyn Mason by .05 seconds in 10.74, the 200 was his only chance left to get the first state title of his career.

He set the stage for the title with a strong showing in preliminaries, posting the fastest qualifying time from his spot in lane seven after an off week at regionals.

"That got my confidence boosted back up," Rezac said. "I was ranked pretty close to last coming in and I had to step it up to show what I've got."

Potawatomi First Census Book

The Potawatomi census book of 1862 remains a vital foundational document for the Citizen Potawatomi Nation; however, the Tribe does not have possession of it. CPN staff first saw it in 2006 at St. Marys Indian Pay Station Museum in St. Marys, Kansas. The artifact documents the Nation’s beginning, and members and staff of CPN have spent almost 15 years attempting to gain custody from the city’s historical society.

The Treaty of 1861 presented Potawatomi in Kansas the option to either continue living on a communal reservation or accept a small allotment for their families and begin a path to United States citizenship. Those who took individual parcels later became known as Citizen Potawatomi. Part of the treaty also guaranteed a census of those living on the reservation accepting allotments, which the government carried out the following year.

Sherer Fights Thru Pain To Win

From the Capital-Journal

More than an hour after stepping off the court Saturday at Riverside Tennis Center in Wichita, Alex Sherer was still in pain.

Physically, that is. His left calf that had cramped up on him late in Saturday's Class 3-2-1A state championship singles match was still locked up, understandable given the match lasted more than two hours and went three sets, two going to tiebreakers.

Despite the physical agony, Sherer was in sheer ecstasy. The Rossville senior had just made history, becoming the school's first state tennis champion.

Sherer took a 6-7 (8-10), 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) win over Wichita Collegiate's Nick Grabon in a grueling championship match, capping a 36-2 season — the only one of Sherer's high school career.

"I don't think anything compares to what that means to me, and nothing compares to the moment for sure," Sherer said. "It means everything. Rossville's not exactly full of tennis players. I was that kid looking up watching all these high school kids winning state titles in football, baseball, whatever. Having big sporting moments. This was my sport and not knowing if I'd ever have that chance to have a high school career."

Sherer cruised into Saturday's semifinals with a pair of easy wins on Friday and then waited out a long rain delay to start Saturday's play before beating Smoky Valley's Jake Lucas 6-1, 6-0 in the semifinals.

Instead of getting another shot at Kansas City Christian's Caleb Bartels, who beat him in the regional finals, Sherer got Grabon, who advanced with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Bartels in his semifinal match.

The two hadn't faced each other since their youth and with the tournament being held in Wichita, Grabon had a large contingent on hand to watch the match. But he'd seen enough of Grabon to know what he brought to the table.

After dropping the first set in a 10-8 tiebreaker, Sherer had to change things up.

"Nick's forehand is his big shot, so I was trying to keep it low to his backhand," Sherer said. "Mix him up, get forward a lot. And it was working early on. I just had to flip the momentum."
He accomplished that as Sherer jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the second set. But Grabon flipped it right back, reeling off four straight game wins to close to 5-4 before Sherer closed out the set to force a third one for the title.

In the third set, his left calf started cramping on him, but Sherer fought through it. He got out fast again in the final set, leading 3-1 and 5-2. But he couldn't finish off Grabon immediately and saw the Spartan rally to not only tie the match, but go up 6-5 with the serve to win it.

But Sherer broke Grabon's serve and after being tied 3-3 in the tiebreaker won four of the next five points for the title.

"I just told myself, 'This is it. This is what it all comes down to,'" Sherer said. "I came up with some good shots and got it back to a tiebreaker and played some key points in the tiebreaker to seal it.

"It was definitely satisfying, definitely awesome."

Evelyn (Kovar) (55) Bayside Passes Away

Evelyn Thompson Bayside - Nee Kovar Died peacefully May 6, 2021 at the age of 84 years old. Beloved wife of the late Mahlon Thompson Jr. Dear mother of the late Barbara Bielicki and mother-in-law David Bielicki of Belgium and Katherine (David) Eurich of Bayside. Preceded in death by her siblings Earl (Disca Ann) Kovar, Betty Kovar and Agnes (Robert) Rafferty. Further survived by 4 grandchildren; Johnathan Bielicki, Christopher Bielicki, August Eurich and Anastasia Eurich; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Evelyn grew up on a farm in Rossville, Kansas and was truly an educator at heart. She was ahead of her time as a woman in both science and education, earning her bachelor's degree in Biological and Physical Science in 1958 and her masters degree in science in 1963, both from Emporia State University. She married Mahlon, the love of her life and also an educator, in 1965. After moving to the Milwaukee area in 1966 she taught at a number of institutions, including spending many years teaching Anatomy and Physiology to nursing students at Milwaukee Area Technical College. She also taught high school students as a science lab instructor for over 20 years at Pius XI high school until she retired in 1996. The number of lives that she touched through her teaching is countless and is something she took pride in during her life. She enjoyed spending time with her family and taking road trips across the United States. Her children and grandchildren were her pride and joy.

Visitation on Wednesday, May 19th at Schmidt & Bartelt Funeral Home, 10280 N. Pt. Washington Rd., Mequon from 4-6pm. Private burial at Wisconsin Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers please consider memorials to The Gathering of Southeast Wisconsin in Evelyn's name
