Java For Jonah

ROSSVILLE, Kan. (WIBW) - A coffee shop in Rossville is brewing for a good cause, helping one little boy fight a rare auto-immune disease.
Java for Jonah is being sold to help an 8 year old boy named Jonah Slack whose family deserves the energy boost more than most.
"Jonah’s IgE should be 90 or less and he's currently at 17,000,” said Jonah’s father Derek Slack.
8 year old Jonah and his parents have been put through the ringer with medical issues since he was born.
"Honestly Jonah doesn't sleep hardly at all, so we know if we complain about sleep how much more tired is he,” Derek said.
Jonah has Hyper IgE Syndrome which makes him allergic to everything. There could be other issues too, including a high risk for cancer.
Mom Shawna Slack said Jonah’s constantly experiencing itching that won't stop and a lot of pain throughout his body, which keeps him from sleeping.
Jonah said right now his hands look fine, but from his feet to his ankles, it’s not so good, and the medical treatments can be pretty rough.
"Well each day I take a bath that has bleach in it that just kills the bacteria on my skin,” Jonah said.
Treatments are also expensive. Jonah uses different ointments, steroids, and light treatments to combat his skin condition. He also sleeps in wet pajama's to help his skin absorb the moisture.
Derek said with the lack of sleep, the family runs on a lot of steam, and that’s why coming to the local coffee shop is their fuel pretty much every single day.
Family friend Sarene McCrory owns Grounded Coffee House in Rossville and found the answer the Slacks have been looking for.
"I just kind of had a God moment where it hit me that okay you need to act on this, and so I told my husband okay this is what’s going on, and this is what I'm thinking, this Java for Jonah just keeps coming up, and running through my mind and we have to act on this,” McCrory said.
The Java for Jonah coffee bags can hardly stay stocked, with much of the Rossville community wanting to help out. Dad Derek said it’s been an overwhelming happy surprise.
"To sit in here everyday and get to watch people pick it up and buy it, it's humbling, each sip that I take it humbles me, it really does, but it was a beautiful gesture,” Derek said.
To help support Jonah’s cause you can buy Java for Jonah bag of coffee for $15 at Grounded Coffee House in Rossville. They are open every day from 6:30 to 11:30 a.m.
You can now buy a bag of Java for Jonah coffee online at:.

Message From Tom Dailey

Christmas is a'coming... I'm remembering the gathering in Rossville, KS where the Veteran's Monuments are now... there'd be a Christmas tree with lights and somebody giving away "stockings" of peppermint sticks, an orange, nuts, "squishy peanuts", and lumps of sugar with a thin veneer of chocolate on 'em. We'd sing Christmas carols and the kids would get a stocking... that was right after the church "children's programs... and THIS is my "piece" from 1949, when I was 6 years old.

The Rossville girls staged a big second half rally to get a win over Sacred Heart in the Chapman Irish Classic tournament on Friday night.  They were down 7 points at the half,  but stormed back for a two point win at the end.
The Sacred Heart Knights trailed by six (39-33) with nearly three minutes to play, but got the game tied on back-to-back 3-pointers from sophomores Ally Cochran and Hannah Goetz.
After Rossville (2-1) regained the lead on a bucket from Caila Hill, Sacred Heart sophomore Amber Palen pulled her team even again with a shot a step inside the 3-point line with 12 seconds to play.

Rossville’s Avery Anderson made both ends of a one-and-one with 4.8 seconds remaining. The Knights went the length of the court and got a good look for 3 from Cochran, but the ball bounced off the rim as the buzzer sounded.

Dannefers Help Raise Money

Claira Dannefer, 12, of Abilene, said she was inspired by her best friend, Dallas Parks, 11, also of Abilene, who had been born with a cleft palate and was able to get the surgery as an infant.
“She really wanted to help someone else who couldn’t afford the surgery,” Dannefer said of Parks.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a cleft lip and cleft palate are birth defects that occur when a baby’s lip or mouth doesn’t form properly during the mother’s pregnancy. The causes of a cleft lip or palate are largely unknown, according to the CDC, but it is thought that changes in genes or environmental factors may play a role.

Dannefer went to work in late 2016, collecting scrap metal to raise the money that has since been donated to Samaritan’s Purse, an international Christian relief fund. The $1,346 she was able to raise in the span of 8 to 9 months has since contributed to a cleft lip and cataract surgeries, the purchase of water filters, milking goats and the coverage of shipping costs for items distributed by Operation Christmas Child, an initiative of Samaritan’s Purse.
“I’m really happy I’ve been able to help other people,” Dannefer said. “I hope other people will be influenced to help others.”
Someone who was inspired to help was her grandfather, Daryl Dannefer, of Rossville.
“We’re not supposed to be proud, but I was proud of her,” he said of Claira. “I always knew she had a good heart.”
Claira Dannefer said her grandfather was the person who gave her the idea to collect the scrap metal to raise the money. Daryl Dannefer said he used social media to get the word out that he was helping his granddaughter collect the metal.
“I put it on Facebook and it just went crazy,” he said. “I would also go around to people’s houses and let them know I was collecting scrap metal.”
Although they live nearly 80 miles apart, Claira Dannefer said she would try to help her grandfather whenever she could collect scrap metal during her visits to her grandparents’ home in Rossville.
“He did a lot of work to help me out,” she said.
Daryl Dannefer said often the main trash collector in Rossville would call him if he saw someone throwing away something that could be salvaged, like a large appliance.
“I would haul it into Topeka,” he said. “We were going as far as Onaga to pick up scrap metal.”
Daryl Dannefer said someone even donated a pickup truck to be salvaged. He said an employee of a recycling center in Topeka also donated some money to his granddaughter’s efforts.
“We were just blown away,” he said. “As I was unloading the copper, aluminum, electric motors, I explained to the man working there about Claira’s idea to earn money for those in need. He was so impressed with an 11-, 12-year-old girl’s heart to give that he donated 5 dollars of his own money to her. There are plenty of great people still around.”
Melissa Dannefer said she and her husband, Eric Dannefer, have always tried to teach their daughters Claira, Naomi, 13, and Hope, 8, that there are other people in the world who are in need and deserving of help.
“We’ve been blessed,” she said. “We’ve always tried to raise our girls to know the world is bigger than they are.”

Willard Bridge Speed Limit Changed

From the Capital Journal:
The Shawnee County Commission on Thursday approved raising the speed limits on parts of the road between Interstate 70 and Rossville. The decision came after a Nov. 13 traffic and speed study in the area showed traffic levels could handle increased speeds, public works director Tom Vlach said.
Drivers traveling south from Rossville currently must slow from 50 mph to 35 mph at N.W. 33rd road north of the Kansas River. That speed must be maintained across the bridge and through Willard until 450 feet south of 2nd Street, where it returns to 50 mph.
The speed limits the county approved Thursday allow drivers to maintain 50 mph for an extra half mile until they reach the north end of Willard Bridge. Across the bridge, the limit will be increased to 40 mph until entering Willard, where the speed is reduced to 35 mph. South of 2nd Street the limit returns to 50 mph.
The traffic study recommended 40 mph through Willard, Vlach said, but he recommended keeping the speed at 35 mph.
“I’m not comfortable with that speed with the high number of intersections and potential pedestrians in Willard,” he said.
Commissioner Shelly Buhler, a former Rossville mayor who represents the area, joked that the slope of the bridge increases the chance for speeding coming into Willard from the north.
“Rossville police monitor that area quite frequently,” she said. “So, drive accordingly.”
