Drug Arrest In Rossville
From the Rossville Police Facebook page:
October 14th 2017 near US 24 & Main in Rossville at approximately 11pm: The on duty Rossville Officer witnessed a U-Haul truck drive into a local convenience store with a male driver. After leaving the store a few minutes later, the truck committed a minor traffic infraction and was stopped. The individual driving at that time was a female with no license who was also a registered offender for felony narcotics distribution. The male who had been driving was in the center passenger seat; he had a suspended license.
Upon having both subjects exit the truck, the officer saw the male had a partially concealed handgun on his hip and a methamphetamine pipe sticking out of his shoe. Both subjects were detained along with the third passenger. A Silver Lake Police Officer and a Shawnee County Sheriff’s Deputy were both called to assist as backup.
Further investigation revealed the male driver was in possession of marijuana, methamphetamine, and drug paraphernalia. A loaded .40 caliber Glock handgun was taken into evidence as well. The male driving suspect was arrested and transported to the Shawnee County Jail where he was booked in on multiple felony and misdemeanor charges including Criminal Possession of a Firearm. The other two individuals were released on the scene and soon obtained a ride out of town.
The truck was held for U-Haul who sent a wrecker to retrieve it as the individual who had rented it had been arrested.

Young Woman Arrested In Rossville
From the Rossville Police Facebook Page:
On October 17th, 2017 the Rossville Police Dept. received a phone call from a concerned City utility employee about a young lady that was not acting correctly. He stated that this person had entered a house that was being cleaned by the landlord’s employees. The young lady tried to enter the property without permission and was acting as if she was under the influence of an illegal narcotic. The landlord’s employees notified a close by City employee about the behavior of this young woman.
Officers from the RPD and SLPD responded to the area of Main and Pottawatomie streets to locate the young lady. Officers located her in the 400 blk of Spruce St. From the way the young lady was acting it was clear that she was under the influence of a narcotic drug and was not being rational. She was arrested for pedestrian under the influence of drugs and transported the Shawnee County Jail where she was released to their custody.
After the fact we started receiving complaints on this individual all throughout the community; one in particular is where this person made contact with a mother and her children while walking on Main St. This person picked up one of her children and started walking the other direction while the mother was taking care of one of her other children. The mother caught up with the young lady and took her child back. The mother of the children does not want to pursue any criminal charges at this time.
The young lady that was arrested was not from the community and could not communicate to the officers why she was here.

Old Willard Bridge Gone
From the Capital-Journal:
ON THE KAW
— The skeletal steel and concrete remnants of the half-century-old Willard
Bridge stretched across the Kansas River for the last time Wednesday.
The demolition of the bridge, built in 1955, capped a more than
$18 million project replacing the failing structure that carried Carlson Road
across the river with a new bridge expected to last 100 years.
The explosion was a fitting end for the old bridge, Shawnee
County commissioner Shelly Buhler said from a sandbar upstream from the blast.
Since the early 2000s when she was mayor of nearby Rossville, Buhler has kept a
file on the bridge’s condition and fought as a commissioner to secure funding
for its replacement.
“I
knew I needed to see it,” she said as she thought about the moment, calling the
explosion “impressive.”
“I don’t know that I have any words. It’s weird,” she said.
“It’s the final piece of the whole project.”
Tom Vlach, Shawnee County public works director, joined Buhler
with a handful of construction employees. With the exception of notices sent to
residents within the 1,500-foot blast zone, the demolition wasn’t made public
so spectators wouldn’t crowd around the river banks, Vlach said.
“I didn’t even disclose when I went to the Rossville coffee shop,”
Buhler said.
Though the old Willard Bridge was rehabbed in 1983, age failed it slowly.
The county first lowered the bridge’s weight limit in 2007 because of concerns it could collapse. A 2009 assessment found heavy corrosion on metal pins supporting the bridge that could cause them to fail. The bridge is the same type as the Interstate 35 bridge in Minneapolis that collapsed in August 2007, killing 13 people and injuring 145.
After a series of weight-limit reductions in 2015 the brought its maximum weight to 9 tons, the bridge that previously carried farm equipment and school buses between Willard and Rossville in rural Shawnee County could only hold passenger cars.
Just 25 or 30 pounds of RDX explosive, a compound NASA developed to separate rocket boosters, brought the metal frames down with a splash, Ryan Redyke with Tulsa-based Dykon said. The demolition company has collapsed dozens of bridges making Willard “pretty straight forward.”
“(RDX) cuts metal like a torch,” he said casually. “Not a lot of troubled need.”
On Thursday a crew from contractor A.W. Cohron and Son will remove the metal and cut the concrete support towers down.
Wednesday’s blast was no-frills, but Buhler and hundreds of others were excited to christen the new bridge in August. Nearly 300, including Lt. Gov. Jeff Colyer attended an opening ceremony where Buhler was the first to drive across the new bridge.
ROSSVILLE IN PRECARIOUS POSITION
From the Capital-Journal:
As the three-time reigning Class 3A state champion, Rossville has shown it can get it done when it has to the most. Well, the Bulldawgs will have to do it once again on Thursday to keep its hopes of going after a fourth straight title alive.
Despite being 0-2 in District 4 play, Rossville (2-6) still somewhat holds its postseason destiny in its own hands. A 35-7 loss to St. Marys last week looked devastating, but when Council Grove beat Mission Valley 18-14 it kept the Bulldawgs alive. Very much alive.
Rossville, Council Grove (5-3) and Mission Valley (5-3) are all 1-1 in district play behind district unbeaten St. Marys (5-3), which only needs to beat Mission Valley to secure the district title. If that happens and Rossville beats Council Grove, the runner-up spot will come down to points. Rossville can move past Council Grove with a win by three or more points and can pass Mission Valley with a win by at least 10 points and Viking loss by at least 10.
A blowout win by the Bulldawgs and blowout loss by Mission Valley gets Rossville into the playoffs easily.
“After a year full of challenges, we are very fortunate to still have a chance to be a playoff football team,” Rossville coach Derick Hammes said. “The fact that we have this opportunity motivates me and I would imagine there is still motivation for the remaining teams alive in our district. Nothing would surprise me at this point.”

Mission Valley Game Progress
Rossville scored with 7 seconds left in the first qtr. to take a 6-0 lead on a run by Trevor Johnson.
MV struck back quickly with 10:26 left in the half with a 64 yard TD pass to tie the game. The teams traded short drives in a defensive struggle until MV scored on a pass play with 36 seconds remaining to go up 13-6. On the previous play, Christian Madill sacked the MV quarterback which seemed if might slow their drive as they faced a 2 and 17. But, the successful pass nullified the fine defensive play
The Dawgs scored with 3:22 left in the third to tie the game at 13 all.
Dawgs scored on a long pass of about 50 yards early in the fourth qtr to go up 20-13. In the ensuing MV drive, the Dawgs intercepted. However their drive ended about the 20 coming up about one inch short in a measurement of 4th down. The MV drive was once again stopped by an interception whcih was taken back to about the MV 30. A few plays later the Dawgs scored to go up 27-13 with 3:27 left in the 4th. However, on the next drive, the Vikings completed a long pass to the 10 yard line and two plays later scored. A fake extra point kick added two points to get within 6. But the Dawgs fumbled the ball on a bad snap and MV had the ball with two minutes left. MV scored as time ran out, but the Dawgs blocked the extra point kick. Tied at 27 at the end of regulation time.
On to OT.
The Dawgs were on offense first. They were not able to get the ball into the end zone so attempted a field goal which missed. MV was able to complete a pass into the end zone to win 66-27.
Rossville is now 0-1 in district play. They must win at least 2 of the next 3 games to get continue in the playoffs.

Lydia Francis Carl /Dailey (Smatla)(36) Passes Away
Lydia Francis Carl /Dailey (Smatla) Born July 28th, 1916 in Maple Hill, KS, the oldest daughter of Czech immigrants Thomas & Marie Smatla, she grew up with 5 brothers & 2 sisters near Rossville, KS.
After graduating from Rossville HS in 1936, she worked in Topeka and put herself through Barnes Business College, earning what would now be an Associate Degree. "I wanted to make something of myself" she would often say. Ultimately meeting and marrying Donald Dailey in 1942 "He was a great dancer." She was with the War Price Administration during WW-II in San Francisco, having a baby boy in 1943. Fearing possible invasion on the coast, she moved back to Willard, KS with her parents; Don following after the war was over. She was with Capper Publications, Farmers Insurance and the US Dept. of Agriculture (she was certainly qualified for that!) for many years, ultimately transferring to the Treasury Dept, retiring from the IRS. Incredibly active in Senior groups, the JoCo Election Commission and the Overland Park Presbyterian Church, she always had her "hands in the dirt"... this great Mom who could make ANYTHING grow, always had a large garden, and made frequent visits to the "home place" farm to help her parents & brothers. Growing up in the Depression, she wasted nothing ("Don't you throw that tin foil away!"), and we always had plenty of canned vegetables & fruits from the gardens. Many holiday dinners were made by Mom's talented hands, and little talking could be heard over the sounds of happy eaters. She lost husband Don in 1987, remarrying James Carl in 1988, happily sharing their life until his passing in 2010. Having outlived 7 siblings, she then spent the remainder of her 101 years at Overland Park Place, but continued to feed birds who landed on her balcony ledge & grow starter plants on the windowsill.
Survivors include her son, Thomas C. Dailey of Sedalia, CO; nieces, Paula Kingman, Denise Horgan and Kristi Seigler of Kansas City, Rita Darlene Antoniowicz of Albany, GA, Marcia Reiter of Topeka, KS and Debra Likes of Leavenworth, KS; nephews, Larry Smatla of Oskaloosa, KS, Calvin Kingman of KCMO, Tom Smatla & Paul Smatla of Grand Junction, CO and many grandnieces & nephews and Tom's "adopted" daughter Shona & son Sean.
Come celebrate Mom's life and remember... stand on the plastic!
Visitation will be 2pm - 4pm, Sunday, October 15th at the McGilley & Hoge Chapel. Her Celebration of Life Service will be 10:30am, Monday, October 16th at the McGilley & Hoge Chapel, 8024 Santa Fe Drive, Overland Park with burial following the service at the Czech Moravian Cemetery, Rossville, KS. District Playoff Picture
From the Capital-Journal:
Best district — This one isn’t even close. Chaparral is 5-1 and is one-point loss away from being undefeated. Had the Roadrunners avoided the hiccup, they would have been the fourth undefeated team in District 10. Not only are Cheney, Conway Springs and Garden Plain all 6-0, each has scored at least 280 points. Chaparral joins Cheney and Conway as the only 3A teams to have scored more than 300 points. Any of the four teams is a legitimate title contender.
Worst district — All four of the above teams reside in the Central Plains League. So do three of the four teams in District 9. The difference? District 9 gets the bottom third of the league with Douglass, Wichita Independent and Belle Plaine combining for one win. Bluestem (2-4) leads the district which easily lags behind the rest of 3A.
District winners — Nemaha Central, Maur Hill, Silver Lake, Rossville, Wellsville, Jayhawk-Linn, Galena, Caney Valley, Douglass, Conway Springs, Halstead, Hesston, Marysville, Phillipsburg, Hoisington, Cimarron.
District runners-up — Sabetha, Pleasant Ridge, Perry-Lecompton, St. Marys, Osage City, Humboldt, Cherryvale, Neodesha, Bluestem, Garden Plain, Hutchinson Trinity, Marion, Riley County, Norton, Larned, Lakin.

Burlington Football Game Progress
The Dawgs scored on both of their first quarter drives to lead at the end of the first quarter 12-0.
The Burlington Wildcats toughened up on defense and went to a spread offense in the second quarter. The Wildcats scored a TD and two point conversion while the Dawgs scored six points to up their lead to 18-8 at the end of the half. During the first quarter, the Wildcats employed a single wing formation with unbalanced line. But, that wasn't working very well so they typically lined up in a spread formation and threw quite a bit in the second quarter.
The single wing with unbalanced line is the same formation that the Bulldogs used very effectively in the late 1950s.
In the third quarter, the Wildcats went back to the single wing primarily and moved the ball better than earlier in the game. Their defense was better than the first half and held the Dawgs scoreless. They scored 8 points and the Dawg lead was cut 18-16 at the end of the third.
Early in the fourth quarter, the Dawgs scored on a long pass play to go up 25-16 and then added another TD to take a 31-16 lead. But the Wildcats were not ready to give up and they quickly scored again to narrow the Dawg lead to 31-24. But the Dawgs still had some fight and Trevor Dawson scored quickly to go up 38-24. But, the quarter and the scoring wasn't over yet and the Wildcats added another TD pass to get within 38-32. The Dawgs went in ball control mode and were able to run the clock out while still in the 38-32 lead.
