RHS Boys Lose To Silver Lake 76-33.

The Dawgs were totally out manned at Silver Lake on Dec. 18, losing by 76-33.
The first quarter score was 22-15 in favor of the Eagles.  They upped their lead to 38-23 after 2 periods and 61-28 after a 23 point third period. The final score was 76-33.

From the Capital-Journal:
SILVER LAKE: Given that he’s Silver Lake’s leading scorer, it wasn’t a shock to see Dillon Byrne have a big game Tuesday night.
But with second-leading scorer Mason Griffin sidelined with the flu, Byrne felt the need to pick up his scoring even more.
“I talked to Mason today and he said, ‘Hey, you need to step up tonight,’ ” Byrne said. “We’ve both been up there scoring all year, but that’s what I knew I had to do. But I didn’t think I’d come out and shoot like that.”
Byrne stepped up big indeed. After missing his first shot of the game, Byrne made his next six. All of those were in the first quarter and four were from 3-point range as the senior forward scored 18 straight points in the quarter to help the Eagles open up a 22-15 lead.
Byrne never really slowed down, finishing 14 of 20 from the field overall, 4 of 5 from three and 3 of 3 at the free-throw line for a career-best 35-point night, leading Silver Lake to the blowout win.
“I hit that first shot and I was feeling it,” said Byrne, whose previous high was 34 last year against Wabaunsee. “When I hit that second one, I was like, ‘Well, this is going to work out.’ I got to the rim and got my teammates some open looks too.”

Silver Lake finished 30 of 46 from the field as a team and Walker Moore added 11 for the Eagles (4-1, 2-1). Taegan Sumner led Rossville with 16 points.

RHS Girls Lose To Silver Lake 43-28.

The Rossville girls lost at Silver Lake on Dec. 18.  The first half was pretty even as the lead went back and forth,  but the Eagles outscored the Dawgs 12-2 in the third period to pull away.
After 1 quarter,  the Eagles led 8-6
After 2 quarters,  the Eagles led 20-18
After 3 quarters, the Eagles led 32-20
At the end of the game,  the Eagles were up 43-28.

From the Capital-Journal:
SILVER LAKE — There wasn’t anything glamorous about Silver Lake’s 43-28 girls victory over arch rival Rossville at home on Tuesday night.
But the manner in which the Eagles secured the victory — tough rebounding, solid free-throw shooting and a strong defense — sure was a thing of beauty in the eyes of Eagle coach Loren Ziegler.
“We struggled shooting the ball tonight ... but I love how we compete,” Ziegler said. “We’re playing as hard as we can and it’s not always pretty, but we’re rebounding, we’re defending and tonight we made our free throws. We’re doing a lot of the little things we need to do to win.”
Silver Lake’s defense was at its best in the third quarter. After Caila Hill scored in the the first 1:15 of the second half to tie the game 20-20, the Eagles’ zone defense clamped down.
Rossville went scoreless for the rest of the quarter and didn’t make another field goal until Hill scored at the 4:38 mark of the fourth quarter. By that time, the Eagles had opened up a double-digit lead, closing the third quarter on a 12-0 run.
Silver Lake only made two field goals in the quarter, but hit 7 of 8 free throws in the period. On the night, the Eagles were 24 of 31 overall, masking a rough shooting night from the field where they made just 9 of 32 shots overall and 1 of 13 3-pointers.
Silver Lake also out-rebounded Rossville 29-13, getting 10 offensive boards.
Daryn Lamprecht led Silver Lake (3-2 overall, 2-1 in Mid-East League play) with 12 points and eight rebounds, while Jayme Lindstrom added 11 points.
Hill led Rossville (2-4, 0-1) with 10 points and the Bulldawgs were just 12 of 35 from the field and 4 of 15 at the free throw line.

Jean Taylor Passes Away

Jean June Taylor, 86, of Silver Lake, passed away Tuesday, November 27, 2018.

She was born October 11, 1932, in Boston, Massachusetts, the daughter of Albert and Ruth (Shellmer) Quinlan.

Jean and her siblings grew up in the Irish/Italian neighborhoods of East Boston during the 1930's. She was nicknamed 'Quin' in her youth and made a name defending her twin sister Joanie against school bullies at East Boston High School. After she graduated high school she worked in the dietary department at Boston's Mass General Hospital. She was street smart, Boston tough, and Boston stubborn...all traits the beautiful 21-year-old brought with her to Kansas after meeting and marrying the love of her life, Merle Taylor. Merle was a crewman on the USS Block Island and had docked in Boston for a week. Jean saw him at a club, dropped her handkerchief to catch his attention, and the rest became history.

Jean and Merle were married on September 4, 1954 in Milton, Massachusetts, and then moved to Silver Lake where Merle farmed with his family. Jean adjusted to country life and together she and Merle raised five children. Through it all she never let the Boston accent go (you can take a kid out of Boston but you can't take the Boston accent out of Jean Taylor!). Jean operated an in-home daycare for years and then became famously known as Silver Lake's Pizza Lady, making pizza at Casey's General Store for 15 years. Jean's life was full of love, orneriness, and fun. She loved family gatherings and she absolutely loved spending time with her grandchildren and great granddaughter. She will be dearly missed.

Jean lived for the past three years at Oakley Place in Rossville, where she endeared herself to all. She was well cared for by her children and the caring staff at Oakley Place. She was preceded in death by her husband Merle, her twin sister, Joan Moody; sister Barbara Vesowate, and brothers, Al Quinlan and Walter Quinlan. Survivors include children, Susan (Steve) Tate, Edward (Terri) Taylor, Mark (Jacque) Taylor, Bill (Janice) Taylor, all of Silver Lake, and Brenda (Ronald) Payne of Meriden; 12 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild.

A Funeral Ceremony will be at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, December 1, 2018 at Parker-Price Cremations, Funerals & Receptions, 245 NW Independence Ave., Topeka, Kansas. Interment will follow at Prairie Home Cemetery, 35th & Menoken Road. The family will greet friends thirty minutes prior to service time at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the DARE program in support of the Silver Lake city-wide safe Halloween celebration (an annual event that Jeannie loved), or to the Topeka Rescue Mission.
