Charla (Teske) (70) Diederich Passes Away

Charla R. Diederich, 71, passed away Saturday, March 4, 2023 at the Midland Hospice House in Topeka.

Charla was born March 4, 1952, in Onaga, the daughter of Lawrence A. and Vera “Bernadine” Cameron Teske.  She was raised in the Delia community and graduated from Rossville High School in 1970.  She married Russell G. Freel in Vallejo, CA.  After living there six years they moved to St. Marys. They would later divorce.

Charla worked at the B&B, the CO-OP hardware store and in the CO-OP offices.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Larry Teske.

Survivors include her son, Donny (Whitney) Freel, Rossville, their children, Bryson & Nolan; her sister, JuDee Turner, St. Marys, two nieces, Deana (Robert) Core, St. Marys, and Lynn (Zach) Haver, Omaha, NE; longtime family friend, Beverly Rogers.

A Celebration of Life will be from 10:00 A.M. until 12:00 P.M. Saturday, March 11, 2023, at the St. Marys Senior Center.

Private inurnment will be in the Valley View Cemetery, St. Marys.  Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society and sent in care of the Piper Funeral Home.

     

Jane (Rogers) (58) McClelland Passes Away

Funeral Services will be 10:30 A.M. Friday, September 23, 2022 at the Rossville United Methodist Church.  Private burial will be in the Rossville Cemetery.  There will be a visitation Thursday, September 22, 2022 from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M. at the funeral home.

Virgie (Fidler) (77) Sheely Passes Away

Longtime Alamosa resident Virgie Sheeley ,64, passed away peacefully in her sleep at her home in Alamosa on July 16,2022.

Virgie was born in Corning, California on July 8, 1958, the daughter of Forrest F. Fidler and Lela Pearl (HitchCock) Fidler. She was lucky enough to have been harassed by her older brother Darrell and her younger brother Jess. Virgie grew up in Red Bluff California, where her family farmed Milo, Wheat, and raised pigs as well.

Editor Note:  Virgie attended Delia Grade School and Rossville High as a member of  the Class of 1977.

Virgie met Calvin “Bud” Sheeley at his restaurant La Sahara and fell in love with him instantly. They were  united in marriage in 1979. Virgie and Bud started Dairy Island and later True Grits Steak House, which she operated for more than 30 years. Bud and Virgie reaffirmed their vows shortly before Bud passed away in 2015. We find some comfort in knowing that they are now reunited.

She is survived by her mother Lela Fidler of Alamosa; her daughters Brandi (Juju) Martinez of Castle Rock, CO, and Sheri (Derek) Inness of Rocky Ford, CO; her grandchildren: D’Nessa, Tay’Lor, Paige, Bowen, Benjamin, Paisley, Brexton, and her beloved dog Xena.

Virgie was preceded in death by her father Forrest, her husband Calvin “Bud” Sheeley, and her brothers Jess Fidler and Darrell Fidler.

Our mother always made us feel loved, but she adored her grandchildren! She was always their biggest cheerleader. She would drive hours to cheer for one of her babies. Our Mom’s greatest pleasure in life was spoiling her 7 grand babies. She always made sure she had a surprise or treat every time they saw each other. It wasn’t just about spoiling them. She wanted them to feel special. No matter how small the accomplishment, it never went unsaid that she was so very proud of every single one of them. She was their biggest hype man!

Anyone that knew our mother knew that she had an enormous heart that matched her beauty! If you needed a ride to your AA classes, or to be taken to a doctor's appointment in Pueblo. She always had the words you needed to hear. Her energy always matched the situation. If you ever needed a fun night out, you could call Virgie she was your gal, never more than a phone call away. She was the hardest working person most of us will ever know! She opened her restaurant at 10:00 a.m. and cooked all day until 10:00 p.m. She hand cut all the steaks at the restaurant, ground all the hamburgers, and made patties. Breaded the country fried steaks. Did her payroll, and still be the most beautiful amazing mom, grandma, and daughter.

After the passing of her brothers and father our mother brought our grandma to live with us permanently. It was a Dorthy, and Sophia type relationship for mom and grandma. Some of our best memories are with the four of us girls. Mom had dedicated these last few years taking care of grandma. Our grandma is so very saddened by “her Virgie’s passing.”

Our mother would be deeply touched by the amount of love and support that has been extended to our family. Please feel free to visit our grandmother (Lela Fidler) at the care center. She needs a little more tender loving care now, more than ever.

A visitation will be held at the Rogers Family Mortuary in Alamosa on Wednesday, July 20, 2022 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. A graveside Celebration of Life Gathering will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, July 22, 2022 at the Monte Vista Cemetery in Monte Vista. Concluding the funeral there will be a celebration, at Virgie’s home (2333 Thomas Avenue, Alamosa, CO) at 2:00 p.m. Virgie’s love was boundless, as was her class and integrity. Alumni Wrestling Fundraiser For Cody

ROSSVILLE (KSNT) – Five years ago, Rossville wrestling coach Cody Lambotte was diagnosed with ALS, commonly referred to as “Lou Gehrig’s Disease.” ALS has left Lambotte paralyzed from the neck down.

As hospital bills added up, Rossville assistant wrestling coach and Lambotte’s brother-in-law, Chris Graves, decided to help.

Graves reached out to his wrestling family about creating an alumni dual with wrestlers from the area. Graves was hoping to get ten matches. Within two hours, he had 20.

“When [Cody] was diagnosed, you can imagine what we went through as a family, as a wrestling family,” Graves said. “Wrestling as a whole is sort of a family network.”

Wrestlers traveled long distances to participate in the fundraiser, coming from as far as Hoxie and Norton to support Lambotte.

“Cody really embodied what wrestling is all about,” Silver Lake wrestling coach Colt Rogers said. “He wore his emotions on his sleeve. You see how much passion, and love and blood, sweat and tears into it, just by watching it in the corner.”

Lambotte’s mom, Alaina, said she knew how much the support means to Cody.

“He loves it,” Alaina Lambotte said. “[Cody’s] made a huge impact on this community, and for them to keep backing him…he loves it.”

Tickets to enter cost $10 for an individual or $30 for a family. No total count has been reported yet, but the gym was packed Friday night.

“A lot of this money comes out of pocket for certain things, or maybe insurance doesn’t cover,” Graves said. “So we’re just trying to do our part to give back to him.”

John Rogers (89) Passes Away

John W. Rogers, 50, of Topeka, passed away Friday, January 22, 2021.

He was born November 23, 1970, in Topeka, Kansas, the son of Don and Ruth (Raine) Rogers.

John graduated from Rossville High School in 1989. He worked as a Sous Chef.

John was a proud recovering member of the Narcotics Anonymous (NA).

Survivors include his parents, Don and Ruth Rogers of Topeka; his brother, Jared Rogers of Topeka; his uncles and aunts, Martin (Jane) McClelland of Rossville, Art (Tamara) Raine of Harrison, Arkansas, Linda Raine and Robert (Cathy) Cooper both of Topeka.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Clyde (Fern) Rogers; his maternal grandparents, Joe (Dorothy) Raine and Ruth Raine.

John enjoyed aviation, history, museums, cooking, painting, drawing or anything he could do with his hands. John was very creative and gifted.

Honoring John’s request, cremation is planned. A memorial ceremony will be held at a later date post Covid-19.

Dean Page (45) Passes Away (updated)

Dean Rogers Page of Rossville died Monday, November 30, 2020 at the age of 92 at Aldersgate Village in Topeka after contracting COVID-19. 

Dean was born to Ralph and Ruth Page on January 13, 1928 in Willard, Kansas. One of two children, he graduated from Rossville High School in 1945 and earned a degree from Kansas State College in 1952. Dean married Mildred Crow of Dover on August 13, 1950, and together they had four children.

Ever a consummate citizen soldier, Dean served two years on active duty in the Army and 30 years with the Kansas Army National Guard, retiring as a colonel. His service to his country inspired his son and two grandsons to serve, which brought him endless pride. Dean worked as an activity therapist and administrator at the Menninger Clinic in Topeka for 36 years, retiring in 1990. He also served his community as lifetime member of the Masonic Lodge, Eastern Star, and the Rossville United Methodist Church, in which he held many leadership positions.

A longtime K-State football and basketball season ticket holder, Dean cheered for the Wildcats in good, bad, and downright ugly years. In fact, he was a lover of all sports, watching Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs defeat Tom Brady and the Buccaneers the evening before he passed. Dean was also an avid reader, lover of history, and active traveler. These interests were combined with his wife Mildred and other friends for multiple bus trips around the country. 

Dean was preceded in death by his wife Mildred and sister Phyllis Keller. He is survived by his children: Cherie Hodgson, Manhattan, Deana Turner, Topeka, Sandy Gilmore, Overland Park, and Roger Page, Overland Park, as well as 11 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. His family brought him great joy, and in return he demonstrated how to live a life of devotion, generosity, and compassion.

A private graveside service for immediate family will be held at the Dover Cemetery. A celebration of life will take place when it is safe to again gather in large groups. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Rossville United Methodist Church, sent in care of Piper Funeral Home, 714 Maple Street, St. Marys, KS  66536. William Raine Passes Away

     William L. “Bill” Raine, 77, passed away Wednesday, September 23, 2020, at his home.  He was born in Topeka on October 4, 1942, the son of Otto M. George Jr. and Ruth Mae Schlotz George.

     Bill lived in the Maple Hill area most of his life and graduated from Maple Hill High School.  He worked at Goodyear Tire and Rubber, retiring in 1997.  In 1986, Bill pursued a desire to follow his dad’s profession and attended World Wide Auctioneer School at Mason City, IA.  This profession he followed until 2019.  He also loved the cowboy life, which he fulfilled by owning his own cow herd.  Caring for the mother cows and enjoying the calving season were a joy for him.  Bill was a member of the Maple Hill Community Congregational Church.

     Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Ruth Raine; his father, Otto George Jr; a son, William Todd Raine and a great-grandson Ryan Herrin.

    William L. “Bill” Raine and Linda Sue Ungeheuer were united in marriage in Topeka on April 18, 1961.  She survives of the home.  Other survivors include his son, Troy of Topeka; his brother, Arthur (Tamara) Raine, Harrison, AR; his sister, Ruth Ann (Don) Rogers, Topeka; four grandchildren, Erica (Matt) Herrin, Levi (Whitney) Raine, Tasha Raine (Jim Weir), Tamara Raine (Josh Hartman); seven great-grandchildren, Corwin Weir, Jaycee Herrin, Liam Hartman, Quinton Herrin, Talan Weir, Hinsley Raine, and Kelton Raine; three step-great-grandchildren Preston Hartman, Gavin Hartman, and Xander Meyers.

     Graveside services will be at 11:00 A.M. Monday, September 28, 2020, at the Maple Hill Cemetery.  Interment will be in the Maple Hill Cemetery.  Bill will lie in state and the family will receive friends on Sunday, September 27, 2020, at Piper Funeral Home in St. Marys from 3:00 until 6:00 P.M.

Laird and Sharon French Celebrate 50th

Laird and Sharon French are celebrating their 50th anniversary. Laird is a retired farmer rancher and Sharon is retired from the BNSF Railroad. Married August 1st, 1970 they have celebrated many happy years together.

They are blessed with two children Shawn and Charlotte, and grandchildren Emily and Claire.

Mary (Cobler) Warner Passes Away

Mary Schiefelbein Warner, 94, of Topeka, died on May 28, 2020.

She was born Mary Ellen Cobler on November 9, 1925, in Rossville, KS, to Barbara and Walter Cobler. She was the sixth of eleven children and grew up in Topeka. In 1942, she married Sylvester Schiefelbein, the fourth of eleven children. Their big, loving families were always important in their lives and shaped the lives of their own six children.

Mary enthusiastically embraced Sylvester's Roman Catholic faith, which she faithfully practiced her whole life. She and Sylvester were active members of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, and their children attended Sacred Heart School. Mary served as a Eucharistic minister at church and for the homebound. She was a member of the Legion of Mary, Daughters of Isabella Little Flower Circle #503, and the Altar Society.

Sylvester died in 1979. Mary married Loren Dale Warner in 1982. Both Mary and Dale retired from Ohse Meat Company. They enjoyed traveling and attending Dale's Air Force reunions. Dale died in 1988.

Mary was blessed with 16 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren, 9 great-great grandchildren, and 61 nieces and nephews. Her family and friends will remember her for her delicious apple pie and her homemade noodles, spread across the kitchen counter to dry, and for the Volga German specialties she learned to make from Sylvester's mother, Amelia. They will remember her for her hard work, both at home, and in the jobs she took to help support the family.

They will also remember her devotion to her mother and Sylvester's mother, both of whom died on her birthday. They will remember all the times she cared for her sick and dying siblings. They will remember how well she and Sylvester danced waltzes and polkas, played on the dulcimer by Sylvester's brother Joe at the wedding dances that were an important part of family life. Her children will remember with great love the sacrifices she made for them as they were growing up. They will remember her tremendous will to live, seen in her survival of a major illness when she was 83, and in her determination in the years afterwards to be with her family through the challenges of aging.

Mary is survived by her six children: Lyle (Sharon), Richard (Ann), Linda Burghart (Steve), Michael (Steve Klinkerman), Mark (Heidi), and Craig (Carolyn). She is also survived by her brothers Walter Cobler (Nancy), Robert Cobler (Donna), and Fred Rogers (Norma).

She will lie in state at Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. and a Parish Rosary will be prayed at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 2nd. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, June 3rd, at 10 a.m, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Interment will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.

    The Rossville High School Alumni Foundation held the 10^th Annual Reunion, Dinner and Scholarship Presentation on Saturday June 1, 2019 at the Dekat Parish Center.   Social hour began at 4:00 with a catered dinner served at 6:00.  During the program that followed, Garrett Carver, Katie Glotzbach and Jordan Bittner were each awarded $1,500 scholarships given by the Alumni Foundation.   Garrett and Katie introduced themselves during the program.  Jordan was unable to attend.   Victor Miller, milestone class of 1969, spoke to the group about his time in school moving from a one room school to graduating from Rossville High School.    Deceased alumni were honored.   Election of officers was held.   Leaving the Alumni Board were Kathy Dayton Kovar, Bonnie Fauerbach and Virginia Rezac Foster.   Joining the board were Connie Broxterman Fischer (class of 1988), Colleen Ross Gillum (class of 1989) and Abigail McCrory (class of 2018).   There were 80 alumni and guests in attendance.  The evening ended with class photos being taken.  Next year’s party will be June 6, 2020.

Harold Rogers Passes Away

     Harold Gene Rogers, 90, passed away at home on October 27, 2018 in Middleton, Idaho. 

     Harold was born on October 10, 1928 to Albert and Evelyn Rogers in Kearney, Nebraska. He married Marcia Hagerty in 1952. While living in Nebraska and Iowa they had three sons. The family moved to Rossville, Kansas in 1959, where Harold was the manager at an alfalfa dehydrator plant for over 10 years. Harold loved to raise pheasants and peacocks, hunt and fish. In 1970, the family moved to Winnemucca, Nevada where he worked as a mechanic for the Humboldt County School District. While working for the school district, he met and married Marilyn Lesh in 1976. Harold and Marilyn later moved to Middleton, Idaho where Harold continued to work as a mechanic until he retired.
     Harold is survived by his wife, Marilyn Rogers, brother, Frank (Janet), sons William (Brandis) and Michel (Karen), step-daughter Kay (Blaine) and numerous nieces, nephews and grandchildren
Harold is preceded in death by his parents, son Gary Rogers, step-sons Brian and Carson Clelland, and his sisters Betty, Elaine, Pat and Marlene.
