Leo Berry Passes Away


 Leo D. Berry, 83, passed away Thursday, June 6, 2013 at St. Francis Hospital in Topeka.
He was born November 2, 1929 at Topeka, the son of Leo Daniel and Mildred Rupin Berry.  Leo grew up in the Rossville community and graduated from St. Marys High School, in 1947.  He attended Creighton University and Kansas State University and served in the United States Coast Guard.
Mr. Berry owned and operated the Berry Grain and Seed Company, Berry Fertilizer and Berry Irrigation companies for many years before selling them on July 28, 1976 and retiring.  He was a member of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Rossville and the Knights of Columbus.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Robert Lee Berry.
Leo was united in marriage to Darlene Thompson in 1954 in Greensburg.  She survives of the home.
Other survivors include two sons, Michael (Cindy) Berry, Meriden, and Vincent (Stacy) Berry, Topeka; a daughter, Rhonda (Gary) Busse, Raymore, MO; 11 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 A.M. Tuesday, June 11, 2013 at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Rossville.  Interment will be in the Rossville Cemetery.  Mr. Berry will lie in state after 2:00 P.M. Monday, June 10, 2013 at Piper Funeral Home in St. Marys where the family will receive friends from 6:00 until the rosary at 7:00 P.M.  Memorial contributions may be made to St. Stanislaus Catholic Church or Catholic Charities of North East Kansas and sent in care of the Piper Funeral Home..

Rattlers Host Youth Baseball Camp

    The Rossville Rattlers will host a youth baseball camp from 9 a.m. to noon Thursday and Friday at Joe Campbell stadium. Area kids ages 5 to 14 will get pointers on hitting, catching and fielding. Rattlers coach Brett Cowdin and players will give instruction to attendees.
    Cole Gruber had a hot bat for the Rattlers, but it wasn't enough to get a win against the  Joplin Outlaws, as Rossville lost 4-3 at Joe Becker Stadium on Tuesday.
     The Rattlers next game is Thursday night at the Junction City Brigade.

    The Rattlers will play their home opener against the Kansas City Bandits at 7 p.m. Friday.

Barbara (McCoid) Wegener (46) Passes Away


    Barbara Ann Wegener, 84, died April 16 2013, at Dewey Medical Lodge, Dewey, Oklahoma.
    Friends may call at the Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Hiawatha after 12 noon Sunday, where the family will meet with friends from 6:00 – 7:30 that evening. A celebration of Barbara’s life will be held at First United Methodist Church in Hiawatha, KS on Monday, April 22, 2013 at 10:30 AM., with Rev. Randy Quinn officiating. Interment will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Hiawatha.
    Barbara was born August 7, 1928, in Topeka, KS, to Harley and Vina (James) McCoid. Barbara attended Silver Lake and Rossville Schools and graduated from Rossville High School in 1946. Barbara graduated from Kansas State University in 1950 with a degree in Home Economics. She taught Home Economics at Hiawatha High School for two years. Barbara married Charles Joseph Wegener on June 1, 1952. Barbara and Charlie made their home on a farm near White Cloud, Ks for many years prior to moving to Hiawatha, KS in 1978.
    While living on the farm, Barbara was an active member of the Zion Methodist Church of rural Robinson, Ks. After moving to Hiawatha, she transferred her membership to the First United Methodist Church. Barbara was a member of PEO HU Chapter. She was also thru the years active in the UMW Susannah Circle.
    Barbara was preceded in death by her father, Harley McCoid, her mother, Vina McCoid, and her husband, Charles Joseph Wegener in 2009
    Barbara is survived by one son Dennis Charles Wegener and wife Nora of Bartlesville, OK, two granddaughters, Lisa Wegener of Bartlesville, OK, Emily Wegener of Tulsa, OK, a grandson, Mitchel Wegener of Tulsa, OK, one brother, James McCoid and wife Ruby of McCall, ID, one sister-in-law Laura Wegener of Hiawatha, and several nieces and nephews.
    Memorial contributions are suggested to the First United Methodist Church Memorial Fund which may be sent in care of the funeral home, 124 S 7th St., Hiawatha 66434.

Rattler's Drop Two Games to Junction City

    The Rattlers lost games to the Junction City Brigade over the weekend.  The Brigade was a 10-3 victor on Sat. night and then topped it off with a 4-3 victory on Sunday.
    The Rattlers Visit the Joplin Outlaws on Tuesday evening and return to Junction City on Thursday evening.
    The home opener for the Rattlers will be Friday evening against the Kansas City Bandits.

Annual Alumni Dinner/Dance 2013



The Rossville Scholarship Foundation  had their Rossville Alumni dinner this past Saturday night.  It was well attended.  We had over 140 registered alumni and guest in attendance.  During the business meeting the basketball team of 1945-46 was honored.  This team had the most wins of any team in school history.  Record was 24-1.  There were seven members of that team present to be honored. Then two members of the football team joined the others from the basketball team to be honored for their winning football season.
The two $1,000 scholarship winners, Taylor Tomson and Jason Spencer, each gave a short speech on their accomplishments and future plans. 
Clyde Strimple spoke on how important a scholarship was to him.  His helped him to go to college and become a teacher and coach to many students and athletes. 
Election of officers was held.  June Wehner Burgett elected president,  Clyde Strimple elected vice-president,  Helen Wehner Lytle elected secretary, Sandy Lloyd Tomson elected treasurer.  Members at large are Billee Dolezilek and Bob Dolezilek.   Two members retired from the board.  They are Charlie Foster and Jane Rogers McClelland.  Elected as new members at large were Dean Page and Bonnie Fauerbach. 
Roll call of classes was held.  Oldest class attending was Class of 1941.  James Fitzgerald and Juanita Raab.   Most recent class was 1985.  Chris Tomson and Ann Dolezilek.
Next years party will be June 7, 2014.

Ken and Mary Ann Heiland Celebrate 50th


   Kenny and Mary Ann Heiland Kenny & Mary Ann (Halloran) Heiland of Duncanville, TX will be celebrating their 50th anniversary.   They were united in marriage in the Immaculate Conception Church at St. Marys, KS on June 8th 1963.        
Kenny retired from the Fleming Co., Mary Ann from BNSF & Howard Measurement Inc.
    Their children are sons Jamie, Brian, Kevin( deceased) wife Amy. Grandchildren Taylor, Ashlee, Jamie II, Trenton Heiland, Jessica ( Heiland) Wallis, husband Tate, step granddaughter Amanda Floyd & son Ayden Floyd. Great-Grand Son Mason Wallis. Junction City Hosts Biplane Fly-In and Rattlers

This Saturday, Junction City will host the National Biplane Fly-In and the opener for both the Junction City Brigade and Rossville Rattlers Baseball teams.    A good place to spend the day if you are not attending the RHS alumni dinner/dance on Saturday night.
The National Biplane Fly-In will bring biplanes, experimental and fixed winged planes from across the USA to Freeman Field in Junction City. Gates will open at 7:00 am with a pancake feed. Rides will be available for a charge in a Biplane or Helicopter. At 12 PM, a formation flying contest will begin. Guest can walk the plane parking area and get up close to the planes and talk with the pilots. Static display and vendors will be on-site
At 7 p.m., baseball returns to historic Rathert Stadium. The Junction City Brigade Baseball Team will kick off the season with a game against the Rossville Rattlers. KC Royals Hall of Famer Dennis Leonard and the Commanding General of Fort Riley, General Funk, will throw out the first pitches.

Leona Wright Passes Away

   Leona Wright, 104, of St. Marys, passed away on May 24.
   Miss Wright operated the Wright Beauty Salon for 52 years and was well known in the area.
