Summer Classic Begins July 10
The 2013 Summer Classic will get underway on Wednesday night in Rossville at 7:00 PM. The Summer Classic a round-robin style wood bat competition that will feature some of the area's premier collegiate baseball players and teams.
Taking part in the Summer Classic are three local teams; the Topeka Golden Giants (29-13), Rossville Rattlers (12-13) and Junction City Brigade (16-6).
From July 10th through July 15th, all three teams will play each other twice, once at home and once on the road. The team with the most wins at the conclusion of the schedule will be named the 2013 Summer Classic Champion.

RHS Scholarships Received This Year
MULTIPLE SCHOLARHSHIPS AWARDED TO LOGAN
Jason Logan was the recipient of five scholarships at the annual Spring
Awards Night held at Rossville High School. He was awarded the $300 H &
R Block Scholarship, which is donated by H & R Block of Silver Lake and
is based entirely on a hand written application and essay.
The Rossville High School Alumni Association, represented by Mrs. Helen
Lytle, awarded Jason the $1000 RHS Alumni Scholarship. The Association
was founded in 1998 and has awarded over $9400 to deserving students in this
15-year period. The award’s recipient must meet high standards set out by the
association and be a good representative of RHS as they move on through college
and begin their career.
Jason had previously received the Custom Wood Products Scholarship. This
$1000 renewable scholarship was established by Donald and Pamela Lake to
further Custom Wood’s commitment to the communities of Rossville and St.
Marys.
This is the 1st year for the RHS Opportunity Scholarship,
which is provided by an anonymous donor. Recipients were chosen based on GPA, ACT, resume, strength of
schedule, and an essay over an experience that made an impact in their life.
Jason received the $1000 scholarship.
The Rossville United Methodist Church, represented by Toby and
Ann McCullough, also provided Jason with a $1000 scholarship. He plans to
attend Butler Community College in the fall to major in agricultural
engineering. Jason has previously been awarded Livestock, Academic, and
Vocational scholarships through Butler, as well as the Shawnee County Master
Gardener and Dover Community Foundation Scholarships.
SHARP
AWARDED HALLMARK SCHOLARSHIP
Abigail Sharp received the $200 Les Hallmark Memorial Scholarship at
the annual Spring Awards Night held at Rossville High School. The scholarship
was established by Dorothy Hallmark and is awarded annually in memory of Les
who was an Art teacher at Rossville High School for many years. Abby has competed in league art competitions
over the last 4 years and placed every piece entered. She received 5 medals at
league this year, including a 1st place in advanced pencil drawing
and 2nd place in overall 2D. She plans to attend the Univ. of Kansas
in the fall to major in Theatre and has also received a KU Academic
Scholarship.
JENSEN
RECEIVES SCHOLARSHIPS
Rachel Jensen was presented the Duane Parr Memorial Scholarship
of $500 at the annual Spring Awards Night held at Rossville High School. This
scholarship was established by J.D. Parr and his family and friends as an
endowment to honor Mr. Parr, who passed away in January of 2006. Since the Parr family has a strong interest
in music, the recipient must have participated in high school band. Rachel participated
in band all 4 years, received a “1” rating on her flute solo at regionals, is a
section leader, and helped the RHS band receive a 2nd division
rating at state.
Rachel was also awarded the $500 Cole Arnold Memorial Scholarship,
presented annually by Toby and Ann McCullough in memory of their son Cole who
died in a car accident the summer before his Senior year.
The P.E.O. Scholarship of $300 was presented to Rachel by
Lynette Hudson. This scholarship is awarded annually to young ladies from each
of the area high schools. Rachel plans to attend Kansas State University in the
fall to major in Horticulture.
ZLATNIK
AWARDED SCHOLARSHIPS
Lexi Zlatnik received the Kenny Hillebert Memorial
Scholarship at the annual Spring Awards Night held at Rossville High
School. This is a $200 award given by Ken and Carol Hillebert in memory of
their son Kenny. Kenny grew up and
attended school in Rossville and was in a fatal car accident during his Junior
year. The scholarship is awarded annually to someone who reflects the type of
person Kenny was, including showing respect for others and community and school
pride.
Karen Dick presented Lexi with the $200 Rossville Booster
Club Scholarship, which began in 2012. The recipient must have participated
in a KSHSAA activity throughout high school. Lexi plans to attend Washburn
University in the fall to major in Business Marketing, where she has received
the Washburn Presidential and Academic Scholarships. She has also received the Golden City Sertoma
and honorary Cecile Zlatnik Memorial Scholarships.
TOMSON RECEIVES AWARDS
Mr. Jim Dodge announced the winner of the Kansas Masonic
Grand Lodge Essay Contest at the annual Spring Awards Night held at
Rossville High School. This year’s subject was “In marketing the State of
Kansas to a national audience, what would be the major focus of your campaign?”
This year, Taylor Tomson wrote the winning essay.
Mrs. Helen Lytle presented the $1000 RHS Alumni
Scholarship to Taylor. The Alumni Foundation began in 1998 and has awarded
over $9400 to deserving students in this 15-year period. The award’s recipient must meet high

The Kaw Valley Education Association annually raises
money and presents scholarships to an RHS and SMHS student planning to pursue a
career in education. This year’s RHS award was presented to Hailey Thornburg by
Mrs. Laurel Jackson at the annual Spring Awards Night held at Rossville High
School. Hailey plans to pursue a teaching degree in elementary education at
Kansas State University, where she has received a KSU Activity Scholarship.
The $300 Rossville Community Development Committee (RCDC)
Scholarship was awarded to Hailey based on her achievements and community
involvement. The award is given annually
to recognize students who contribute to the community of Rossville.
Hailey was also presented the $1000 Rossville United
Methodist Church Scholarship by Toby and Ann McCullough.
PERINE SCHOLARSHIP PRESENTED
TO BORCHERDING-GARCIA
The Doug Perine Memorial Scholarship was established in 2012
and awarded at Rossville High School during the annual Spring Awards Night. The
Perine family wanted to honor Doug, a long time community figure, by presenting
the $500 scholarship to an RHS student planning to continue their education in
an area related to medicine. Amanda Borcherding-Garcia was the 2nd
recipient of the award. She will attend Washburn University in the fall to
pursue a degree in Nursing. Amanda has also received a Vocal Music Department
Scholarship at Washburn and the Wamego Dutch Mill Scholarship.
SCHULTZ-PRUNER RECEIVES AWARDS
Rain Schultz-Pruner received the Cecile Zlatnik Memorial
Scholarship of $250 at the annual Spring Awards Night held at Rossville
High School. This scholarship is awarded annually to recognize individuals who
demonstrate outstanding character, service, and leadership.
This is the 1st year for the RHS Opportunity
Scholarship, which is provided by an anonymous donor. Recipients were
chosen based on GPA, ACT, resume, strength of schedule, and an essay over an
experience that made an impact in their life. Rain received the $750
scholarship. Rain plans to attend Kansas State University in the fall to major
in Pre-Med/Biology. He has also received the KSU Achievement Scholarship.
BROWN AWARDED DARTING MEMORIAL

begin classes only one week after her graduation from Rossville High School.
DARTING MEMORIAL GIVEN TO ESCOBAR
Jeffrey Escobar, a Senior at Rossville High School, recently
received the $150 Pete Darting Memorial Scholarship. The award was
established in 2008 by the Darting family to honor Mr. Darting, an avid
supporter of the Rossville Dawgs. Jeff plans to attend Highland Community
College in the fall to study Animation.
HAMMER RECIEVES DARTING MEMORIAL
Kyle Hammer received the $150 Pete Darting Memorial
Scholarship at the annual Spring Awards Night held at Rossville High
School. The award was presented this year by Mr. Kenny Darting and was
established in 2008 by the Darting family to honor Mr. Darting, who was an avid
supporter of the Rossville Dawgs. Kyle plans to attend Kansas State University
in the fall to major in Pre-Nursing.
KELLEY GIVEN OPPORTUNITY SCHOLARSHIP

scholarship at the annual Spring Awards Night held at Rossville High School.

Pre-Veterinary Medicine.

Rachel Taylor received two scholarships at the annual Spring Awards Night held At Rossville High School. The RHS Opportunity Scholarship of $250 was provided by an anonymous donor and awarded to Rachel. Recipients were chosen based on GPA, ACT, resume, strength of schedule, and an essay over an experience that made an impact in their life.
Rachel also received the Ray and Rita Mohr Scholarship,
which is sponsored by a Topeka couple and open to any senior in the state of
Kansas. The Mohr’s are strong supporters of education and wanted to show that
support by providing a $500 scholarship to a deserving student. This is the 1st
time that a Rossville student has ever received this award. Rachel plans to
attend Washburn University in the fall to major in Nursing.
OPPORTUNITY SCHOLARSHIP AWARDED TO SMITH
This is the 1st year for the RHS Opportunity
Scholarships, which were provided by an anonymous donor. Recipients were
chosen based on GPA, ACT, resume, strength of schedule, and an essay over an
experience that made an impact in their life. Darcy Smith received the $250
scholarship at the annual Spring Awards Night held at Rossville High School.
She has joined the U.S. Army and plans to attend Kansas State University in the
fall to major in Animal Science. She has also received the KSU Activity
Scholarship.
RCDC AWARDED TO CATRON
Dalton Catron was awarded the Rossville Community
Development Committee (RCDC) Scholarship at the annual Spring Awards Night
held at Rossville High School. This $300
scholarship was awarded based on Dalton’s achievements and community
involvement. The award is given annually
to recognize students who contribute to the community of Rossville. Dalton plans to attend Washburn University in
the fall to major in Business.
PLETCHER AWARDED RHS OPPORTUNITY
Jacob Pletcher received the $750 RHS Opportunity Scholarship
at the annual Spring Awards Night held at Rossville High School. This is the 1st
year for the award, which was provided by an anonymous donor. Recipients were
chosen based on GPA, ACT, resume, strength of schedule, and an essay over an
experience that made an impact in their life. Jacob plans to attend Butler

member of the KSU Women’s Rowing team and will major in Accounting.

experience that made an impact in their life. Becca received the scholarship at
the annual Spring Awards Night held at Rossville High School. She will attend
Washburn University in the fall to major in Nursing and has also received a
Washburn Academic scholarship.

Rattlers Get a Win over the Brigade
The Rattler's picked up a 5-1 win over the Junction City Brigade in a rain shortened game on Saturday night at Joe Campbell Stadium. The Brigade had a grand slam in the top of the 6th to tie the game, but lightning and rain stopped the action and the official score reverted back to the 5-1 at the bottom of the 5th.
The Rattler.s A. J. Doolittle threw the first four innings giving up just one run and four hits.

Rattlers Split With Brigade
The Rossville Rattlers picked up a rare win against the Junction City Brigade on Thursday night 5-3. The Rattlers have been successful against other teams, but have lost most of their contests with the Brigade.
The Rossville Rattlers fell 9-5 on Friday night to the Junction City Brigade. Rossville’s Aaron Gile drove in a game-high three RBIs in the losing effort.
They play the Brigade again on Saturday night.

Hi Bulldawg Fans!
The RHS Booster Club is preparing for a new and exciting
year. As a member of the Booster Club your membership donation ($20.00 per
family/alumni - $50.00 per business) are the hardest working dollars you’ll
spend. Memberships are open to anyone in
our community (not just those who have a junior high or high school student) and
your donation supports the local Jr/Sr High clubs and students.
During the 2012-2013 school year, the Booster Club provided
snacks during summer weights, gave gifts for state bound teams and individuals,
helped with the purchase of a large popcorn machine and supported the
Scholarship fund. In addition, Booster
Club purchased pizza for the Snake Dance and junior high Fall Dance. We also
provided unique Bulldawg apparel for our fans!
For the upcoming 2013-2014 school year we are providing
support for the Hudle program to the students and student athletes and are
partnering with our athletic department on a 1st Annual Golf
Tournament, additional information will be sent when available. If you have any other ideas, please attend
our booster club meetings on the second Wednesday of the month at 7:00 pm in
the High School Commons Area beginning in August.
We are looking forward to an exciting year ahead and we hope
that you will join us in supporting our great students and athletes! If you are interested in volunteering for any
of the Booster Club events, there will be sign-up sheets at school enrollment
or check the school web page under Dawg Booster Club.

Rattlers Victorious Over Midwest Bruins
The Rattlers took advantage of Midwest Bruin pitching mistakes to belt out a 9-1 victory on Tuesday night at Joe Campbell Stadium. The Bruin pitchers allowed a number of walks and Head provided the firepower with four RBIs to put the Rattlers ahead early in the game.
Zach Nitsch, an RHS graduate, drew a walk in the bottom of the third to force in the only run for the Bruins.

Adrian Barber Obituary
Adrian C. Barber, 21, of Rossville died Saturday, June 29th in Topeka, due to injuries sustained in an ATV accident.
He was born October 16, 1991 in Topeka, KS the son of Dwayne Barber and Charlene Wilson. He graduated from Rossville High School and had previously lived in Delia.
He is survived by: his parents, Dwayne Barber and Charlene Wilson of Rossville, KS; his grandmother, Helen Wilson of Topeka, KS; his sister, Brooklyn Gama of Rossville, KS and his brothers, Cody Wilson, Aaron Barber and Lance Buskirk all of Rossville, KS.
A memorial service will be 1:00 p.m. Friday, July 5th 2013 at Mercer Funeral Home in Holton. Memorials are suggested to the Adrian Barber Memorial Fund and may be left in care of Mercer Funeral Home, P.O. Box 270 Holton, 66436. Grace Miller (59) Passes Away
Grace E. Miller, 76, passed away Sunday, June 30, 2013 at the Plaza West Care Center in Topeka.
She was born November 22, 1936 at Perry the daughter of Clarence Isaiah and Pearl Opal Best Dick. She grew up in the Rossville community and graduated from Rossville High School.
Mrs. Miller helped on the family farm and later helped with custom harvesting for nearly 10 years. Grace was a school bus driver and a cook at the Rossville schools. She also was a seamstress and had worked for Luce Press Clippings in Topeka. She was a member of Jimmie Lillard Post No 31 of the American Legion Auxiliary and had been a past member of the Eastern Star.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 A.M. Monday, July 8, 2013 at Piper Funeral Home in St. Marys with interment in the Rossville Cemetery. Grace will lie in state and the family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M. Sunday, July 7, 2013 at the funeral home

Rattlers Lose to Clarinda A's
The Rossville Rattlers lost 10-3 to the Clarinda A’s on Sunday at home. The A’s led 3-1 after five and put the game away with four runs in the sixth. Rossville’s Alex Head went 2 for 3 at the plate.
Dale Mahan Passes Away
Dale Paul Mahan, age 76, Rossville, passed away Saturday, June 29, 2013 at Stormont Vail Hospital in Topeka.
He was born February 13, 1937 at Holcomb, MO, the son of Byron and Amy Borer Mahan. and graduated from Parker High School in 1955.
Dale had worked for the State of Kansas for 45 years retiring in 2000. He worked for the Highway Commission and later for the Kansas State Board of Agricultural Division of Resource as the Water Commissioner. He lived in the Rossville community for many years and was very community minded and was instrumental in the early years of the Tall Corn Festival. He was a past member of the Lions Club, coached youth softball, baseball and basketball and was an avid fisherman, hunter and golfer
Funeral services will be at 1:00 P.M. Wednesday, July 3, 2013 at the Rossville United Methodist Church. Interment will be in the Rossville Cemetery.

Former Rattler Signed by Tigers
Former Rattler pitcher Joe Flattery signed a free agent contract with the Detroit Tigers following the 2013 K-State season and has been assigned to the GCL Tigers of the Rookie Gulf Coast League.
