Golden Giants Sweep 3 Game Series
From CJOnline
Be it pitchers’ duel, offensive slugfest or a methodical drubbing, the style of game was inconsequential.
The Topeka Golden Giants mastered them all in a three-game sweep of the Rossville Rattlers, capping the three-day run with an 8-3 victory Wednesday night in Rossville. Topeka fell behind 2-0 in the first inning but chipped away in the middle of the game and pulled away late to finish the sweep.
“We had a good series,” Golden Giants coach John Tetuan said. “We won in a variety of ways, and it was just team wins every night and that’s a big reason why we’re playing good baseball right now. Some nights we hit; some nights we pitch well. It just seems when we’re not doing one or the other, the other side picks it up and gets it done.”
Tanner Triggs’ two-run homer in the first inning gave Rossville a glimmer of hope it could avenge the 5-2 and 12-10 losses to Topeka the previous two nights. But the Rattlers couldn’t manage another run until Dakota Farkas’ RBI double in the eighth, and by that time Topeka had taken control.
After getting single runs in the fourth on a wild pitch and fifth on Connor Crimmins’ solo homer, the Giants took the lead for good in the seventh on Jake Wodtke’s RBI single. Butch Rea doubled in a run in a two-run eighth, scoring on Crimmins’ RBI single. After Rossville got a run back, the Giants tacked on three insurance runs in the ninth with Ryan Ihle singling home a pair.
With the game still tight, Rossville saw a golden chance to tie it in the seventh come up empty when Josh Srna was caught too far off third after Harrison Hill had singled deep off the fence. The Rattlers also had a runner thrown out at the plate in the eighth.
“They’re a really good team that plays the game the right way,” Rossville coach Tobi Cowdin said. “They put a lot of pressure on you to make all the little plays and we didn’t make them all tonight.”

Tom Dailey Photo
Above is a photo of Tom Dailey, taken about 1947. Something unusual is the white plastic wheel trim between the hub cap and the rear car tire. Back then, white wall tires and full size wheel covers were expensive and somewhat rare. The inexpensive plastic trim kind of bridged the gap between the two, but was even more rare.
