RHS Girls Lose A Close One

     The RHS girls played Cair Paravel in the first round of the Burlington Tournament and built up a nice lead by the start of the 4th quarter,  but then fell apart and ended up losing by one point,  45-44.

RHS Boys Lose At Burlington

    The RHS boys basketball team lost their first round of the Burlington Tournament to the host team by a  75-32 score.

Commissioner Shelly Buhler Sworn In


TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW)-- Local Shawnee County officials were also sworn in Monday morning.
Honorable Larry Hendricks conducted the official swearing in ceremonies Monday morning. Shawnee County Commissioner Shelly Buhler took her oath of office before the commission meeting. Buhler represents the first district which includes Rossville, Silver Lake and Auburn. This is Buhler's third term in office.
Also sworn in Monday were Register of Deeds Becky Nioce. Shawnee County District Court judges David Debenham, C. William Ossmann and Cheryl Rios Kingfisher were also sworn in.
Following the swearing in Buhler was named the Shawnee County Commission vice-chairman. Kevin Cook was named chairman.

RHS-SMHS Split Basketball Games

    The RHS boys basketball team defeated St. Marys 57-46,  but the girls varsity team lost 42-27 in their Jan 16 Mid-East matchup on the Rossville court.

RHS Wrestlers At Basehor-Linwood

    The RHS wrestlers attended the big Basehor-Linwood Bobcat Classic tournament this year on Jan. 16-17.  Attending this year were ACCHS, Andale, Baldwin, Basehor-Linwood, Bishop Ward, Blue Valley, Blue Springs MO, Bonner Springs, Chapman, Clay Center, Columbus, Fort Scott, Glenwood Iowa,Goddard, Junction City, Lansing, Mountain Range Col, Olathe North, Olathe South, OsawatomiePaola, Piper, Pittsburg, Platte County MO, Prairie View, Riley County, Rossville, Royal Valley, Santa Fe Trail, Smithville Mo, STA, St. James Academy, Topeka Seaman, Tonganoxie,Turner,

Bryce Gfeller (21-3,10) (113 lb) received byes the first two rounds.  He then lost to Riley Alderman of Olatha North.

Alex Cavanaugh (23-3,11) (120 lb.)  defeated Zac West of Santa Fe Trail the first round and Eaden Searcy of Tonganoxi the second round.  He then lost to Khamin Crow of Seaman.

Alex Bird (5-13,12) (145 lb.) lost to Austin Purtle of Smithville.

Derek Gentry (13-10,11) (152 lb) received a bye the first round and defeated Will Gerring ((8-6, 12)  of LS the second round.  He then lost to Austin Andres (22-9,9) of Goddard.

Nick Reesor (21-3,12) (160 lb) received a bye the first round and defeated Patrick Haase of Olatha South the second round. He then lost to Isaac Dulgarin (25-0,2) of Olatha North who won the class defeating all opponents by falls.

Kody Hurla (7-10, 9) (285 lb) received a bye the first round.  In round two,  he lost to Arnez Dowdy (13-10,11) of Turner.

Winfield Jansen Passes Away

     Winfield G. Win Jansen, 80, Topeka, KS passed away Thursday, January 15, 2015 at Rossville Health Care and Rehab Center.
    Win was born December 26, 1934 in Roxbury, NY. He was one of eleven children raised in a foster home in Athens, NY. Win came to Topeka as a member of the U.S. Air Force serving as a Senior Medical Specialist. While stationed at Forbes Air Force Base, he met his angel Leatha C. Smith. They were married March 18, 1956. She preceeded him in death on August 16, 2010 after 54 years of marriage. Win and Leatha were involved in bowling at the state level and Win was an avid hunter and fisherman. He also enjoyed coaching his son Steve in baseball for many years.
    Upon leaving the Air Force, Win worked in management at Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company for 27 years. Win was probably best known for his years selling automobiles at John Hoffer Chrysler Jeep, where he was awarded the Chrysler Gold Award. This was the first Gold Award ever given by Chrysler in the Topeka market.
    Survivors include a son Steven Jansen (Lorna), Fort Mohave, AZ and a daughter Kim Livingston (Chuck) Topeka, KS, four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
    A graveside funeral service will be 12:30 P.M. Wednesday, January 21, 2015 at Leavenworth National Cemetery, Leavenworth, KS. Mr. Jansen will lie in state from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. Tuesday at Carey Funeral Home, Burlingame, KS, where the family will meet friends and relatives from 5:30 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. In lieu of flowers, spend the day with a child!

The Kansas Wrestling Coaches Assn rankings for 3A this week are out and RHS maintains its number 2 ranking.  The Dawgs have  three wrestlers ranked number 1 in their class,  and another at number 3 which is unchanged from the last poll in December.

Win Half A Hog

     The RHS booster club is holding a drawing for a chance to win a half of hog – two winners will be drawn – at the Rossville vs. St. Marys game this Friday night. Tickets will be available Friday night and the drawing will take place during the boys game.  Winner doesn’t need to be present to win.  All proceeds will benefit the Rossville Booster Club LED sign. 
      Special thanks to Miller Brothers Show Pigs (Kelly and Alyssa Miller) for the donation of the hog.

Rossville Boys Lose To Rock Creek

    The RHS boys basketball team played at Rock Creek on Jan. 13 but lost 51-25.  Their record is 4-5 for the season and 1-2 in the Mid-East League.

    The RHS girls picked up a road win at Rock Creek on Jan. 13 with a convincing 59-46 victory.  The girls are 6-3 overall and 1-2 in the Mid-East League.
