Nick Reesor (15) At Highland CC


      Nick Reesor is on the 2015 football roster at Highland Community College.  The 5' 11" 190 pound freshman is listed as a defensive back.

Centrailia Visiting Tonight

    Centrailia will be visiting tonight.  The football game will start at 7 PM.

After Prom Meal At Tonight's Game

 There will be an "after prom fundraiser" meal during  tonight's game with Centrailia.  Serving of an Indian Taco, cookie and drink for $6 to begin at 6 PM

RHS & SMHS Split In Volleyball

    The RHS and SMHA volleyball teams each picked up one Mid-East victory as they split their match on Oct. 6.   The RHS girls picked up the win in the first match 25-15, 25-23. But the St. Marys girls continued to improve and the second match, which was very close,  was won by the Bears 20-25, 25-10, 19-25

Patricia Herrmann Passes Away

    Patricia Lou Herrmann, 72, passed away Monday, October 5, 2015 at Lexington Park in Topeka.
    She was born May 31, 1943 at Sabetha, the daughter of Patrick and Clara Maurine Shadal Reid.  Mrs. Hermann graduated from Sabetha High School in 1962.  She received her education degree from KSTC in Emporia and also her Master’s Degree.
    Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 A.M. Saturday, October 10, 2015 at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Rossville.  Inurnment will be in the Sabetha Cemetery at 2:00 P.M.  A rosary will be recited at 9:00 A.M Saturday at the church.

Golf Team at Silver Lake Open

     The RHS girls golf team came in 5th of 7 teams at the Silver Lake Open at Western Hills on Oct. 5, 201.    The team was led by Emily Woodcock with a 53 and Jesse Sowers with a 55.

Derik Kesler Sentenced For Accident


Derik Kesler of  Rossville was fined and sentenced to jail time Monday in Riley County District Court in connection with his role in a 2014 fatality accident in which he was using his cellphone when his vehicle struck KMAN-AM radio reported.
The fatality crash occurred the evening of June 26, 2014, as Kesler was driving a 2007 Dodge pickup truck south on K-177 highway, about three miles south of Manhattan.
The truck struck a bicycle that also was southbound and was traveling on the right shoulder of the highway, according to Kansas Highway Patrol accident reports.
After the collision, the bicyclist came to rest in the west ditch of the highway, while the pickup truck stopped on the southbound shoulder.
The truck’s driver, Kesler, stopped immediately and called 911, but the bicycle rider, Mark Jilka, 49, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Jilka was known in the Manhattan area as an avid bicyclist and was wearing reflective clothing at the time of the crash.
KMAN-AM radio reported that according to Kesler’s witness statement, he was using the GPS service on his phone at the time of the collision and didn’t see the bicyclist.and killed a bicyclist south of Manhattan.
Derik Kesler, 33, who pleaded no contest to one count of vehicular homicide, was sentenced to one year in the Riley County Jail in Manhattan, court officials said.
He was granted parole for one year and will serve 22 weekends in jail, which also could be served as 44 days in succession.

Court officials said he also was fined the maximum $2,500 and will be able to drive only to and from work during that period. Restitution was settled out of court,

     The Kaw Valley cross country team came in third of five teams competing at the Horton Invitational.  There were other teams competing,  but could not place as a team because they did not have the minimum of five runners

Last: beat St. Marys 57-13 Rossville scored all 57 points in the first half of their win over St. Marys. Tucker Horak completed 15 of 16 passes for 213 yards and three scores. He tossed touchdown passes to Trevor Balch, Cole Schumacher, and Christian Roduner. Horak also rushed for 203 yards and three touchdowns on only eight carries. Junior Dawson Hammes added 119 yards rushing and two scores on ten carries.

#2 Wichita Collegiate (5-0)
Last: shutout Clearwater, 35-0 Collegiate improved to 5-0 with a mythodical win over Clearwater. Nathan Burgoyne rushed for 195 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Spartans. The win marked the third shutout of the season for the Collegiate defense.

#3 Scott City (5-0)
Last: beat Hugoton 47-7 Scott City scored in every quarter in a 40-point win over Hugoton. Junior quarterback Bo Hess completed 11 of 15 passes for 177 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for another score. Hess tossed touchdown passes to Drake McRae and Wyatt Kropp, who each caught four passes for 76 yards. Kropp also rushed for 76 yards and a touchdown, while Cooper Griffith added 86 rush yards and two scores. Freshman Wyatt Hayes carried four times for 84 yards and a touchdown.

#4 Halstead (5-0)
Last: beat Sterling, 64-6 Halstead scored 30 points in the first quarter in handling a Sterling team that entered the game 3-1. Tony Morris returned the opening kickoff 84 yards for a touchdown to get the Dragons on the board. Blake Beckett rushed for 177 yards and four touchdowns on only seven carries.

#5 Silver Lake (5-0)
Last: won at Winfield 41-7 Silver Lake made the long trip to Winfield and came away with a 41-7 win over the Vikings. The Eagles scored on their first drive of the game and recovered a fumble and immediately scored again for a 14-0 lead. Silver Lake has won both meetings in this series including a 56-0 shutout at home last season.
