Victor School Celebrates 125 Years

Victor One-Room School to celebrate its 125^th Birthday

This celebration will take place at “Old Prairie Town” at Ward-Meade Historical Park in Topeka on December 15^th, 2016 at Noon. Located at 124 N. Fillmore, Topeka, KS.

The school was originally built in 1891 in the Czech community NE of Rossville. It was located across the road from the Historic Moravan/Bohemian Hall in rural Shawnee County.

The school building was moved to its present location at Ward-Meade Historical Park in 1981, and is being preserved and used to give youngsters the opportunity to experience a one room school and get an idea of how their great-grandparents were educated.

Many school alumni will be present with many of their grandchildren to tell stories about their school days at Victor. Juanita Kendall (age 90) will read a short history of the school. A video interview taken with Sister Mary Kratina (age 92) will be one of the highlights of the celebration.

The names of all former students of Victor School will be on display.

The Rossville Elementary School 3^rd and 4^th graders with Principal Ann McCullough will be the honored guests and are excited to be a part of this celebration.

Also expected are Shawnee County and Topeka City Officials with Ward-Meade Personnel show casing the school.

Everyone is invited to attend this 125^th Birthday Party. It will bring back your happy memories to share of days spent in the school. This will also bring everyone up to date as to the state of the building as it proudly stands today on display at Ward-Meade Historical Park.

JACOB BRADSHAW

Rossville QB-CB

Bradshaw led Rossville to its third straight Class 3A championship with a 12-1 record and did so by posting some staggering offensive numbers. Bradshaw led Kansas in rushing with 2,734 yards this season to go along with 1,774 passing yards and 56 total touchdowns.

This was the first season for Bradshaw (6-foot, 180 pounds) to play quarterback after sitting behind Tucker Horak, who rushed for 2,859 yards and threw for 2,070 yards with 77 touchdowns last season. Trying to follow a season like that was no easy task, but Bradshaw was able to handle the pressure.

Bradshaw played his best games in the playoffs. In Rossville’s five playoff victories, Bradshaw finished with 1,206 rushing yards (241.2 average) and 672 passing yards with 19 touchdowns. He rushed for 281 yards and five touchdowns in a thrilling come-from-behind 48-42 victory over Hesston in double overtime in the Class 3A championship game.

Coach Derek Hammes: “We knew going into this season what his attributes were. He knew he was a smart player and he was athletic. When he gets in the open field, he can run away from people. What we didn’t know was about his experience and how he would handle things under pressure and make the reads that he needed to make in our offense. I had a pretty good indication he would be a good player for us, but I didn’t know he would be this good. The numbers are so difficult to wrap your head around with the numbers that position has put up for us the last few years.”

Manbecks Have A Boy

Cole and Vanessa Manbeck are the proud parents of a new baby boy.  Brody Vaughn Manbeck was born Dec. 4 and weighed  9.3 lbs and is 21.5 inches long.

Rossville Canned Food Drive December 5-9

    This week,  the Rossville Rustlers  4H club is sponsoring a food drive at the grade school and the jr/sr high school.

    The grade school will be collecting by class, and the class with the most food collected will get a pizza party.

    The food drive at the high school is called "Can the Teachers" and if the students bring food and cover a teacher's door, they won't have to have class on Friday, Dec 9!

RHS Takes Part In Quest Challenge

More than 40 high school teams from across the state vied at the annual Quest quiz challenge in Topeka this weekend to show their knowledge of topics ranging from government and science to music to literature.

Several Shawnee County teams took home awards, and some will advance to the annual televised showdown among the top-scoring 16 teams.

Washburn University has hosted the Quest High School Academic Competition since 1981.

KTWU is unveiling a new game show set for this year’s televised 16-team Quest finals, and will tape it during three weekends in late January and early February. The program will be viewable on KTWU and Cox Cable. The airing date was not immediately available.

Michael McGuire, dean of the Washburn honors program and an associate professor of psychology, said the event is a way for the university to promote academics and give back to the community. Schools and students do not pay fees to enter the competition.

Additionally, it gives students a chance to visit the campus, which for some is their first introduction to the school.

Teams that will compete on KTWU will be Washburn Rural, Rossville, Topeka West and Seaman in Shawnee County, along with Bishop Carrol, Mill Valley, Manhattan High, Wichita East, Jefferson West, St. James Academy, Augusta, The Independent School, Derby, Junction City, Maur Hill-Mount Academy and St. Thomas Aquinas.

The top three schools from 3A were: (1st) The Independent School-Wichita, (2nd) Maur Hill-Mount Academy and (3rd) Rossville

Rossville's team consisted of  Mitchell Porter, Emily Woodcock, Kathleen Schuler, Fred Schuler, Ryan Ehrlich and Ashley Rietcheck.

Jacob Bradshaw Makes All-State Team

“I can’t wrap my head around any of the numbers because they’re amazing.”

Knowing those words came from the mouth of Rossville football coach Derick Hammes, one reasonably could assume he was talking about Tucker Horak’s 2015 season for the ages.

And he very well could have after Horak put together arguably the greatest high school statistical season in Kansas history as a senior, becoming the state’s first quarterback to rush and throw for more than 2,000 yards in the same season.

Instead, Hammes was referring to the 2016 season Horak’s successor, Jacob Bradshaw, orchestrated in leading Rossville to its third straight Class 6A state title. Stepping into a job with all eyes on how he would perform, Bradshaw delivered a season which wasn’t a far cry off Horak’s epic campaign a year ago.

The Bulldawg senior amassed 4,508 yards of total offense and 56 touchdowns to leave his own mark on the Rossville program and earn him a headlining spot on The Topeka Capital-Journal’s 2016 All-State Top 11 squad.

“Each kid had a different style, but the result was pretty darn similar,” Hammes said. “To me that’s an indication both were great players and great catalysts for what we were doing. As a coach, you’re extremely lucky when you think you have a once-in-a-lifetime type of guy. And then you have two back-to-back.”

After playing wide receiver for Rossville during its 2015 title run, Bradshaw knew going into the 2016 season there were going to be comparisons to his former teammate. He would be judged on not just every move, every game, but also by where he took the Bulldawgs along the way.

That kind of pressure can be suffocating, but Bradshaw maintained his focus on guiding Rossville back to the 3A state championship. The means of getting there mattered little to him.

“It was kind of a challenge and I did my best to stay away from all of that,” Bradshaw said of the outside pressure. “Once I step on the field, all that goes away completely and you’re locked in on what you have to do to help your team win.

“We really had a belief on our team that if we worked hard and did everything the right way, we could get back to the state championship game. We did that.”

In the process, Bradshaw did an arguably better-than-expected impression of his predecessor. Though he didn’t quite reach Horak’s lofty numbers, he wasn’t far off.

Bradshaw’s 2,734 yards rushing rank only behind Horak’s 2,859 yards in program history for a single season. His 1,774 passing yards are ninth in school history.

And Bradshaw punctuated it all with a stellar performance in the Class 3A title game, throwing for 147 yards and three touchdowns and rushing for 281 yards and two scores, including the game-winner as Rossville edged Hesston 48-42 in overtime for the three-peat.

“I was eager to see how I’d do, but I was surprised at how it turned out,” Bradshaw said. “I tried to learn a lot from (Horak) last year and he definitely helped me out as much as I could. We had a tremendous line and coach puts me in a great position to put up numbers. I had a great supporting cast around me and we had enough playmakers on the team to help me out a lot.”

Whatever questions Hammes, or anyone, had about Bradshaw entering the season, he answered them. Emphatically.

“Once he got it in gear, he never looked back,” Hammes said. “He did a super job for us.”

Bradshaw is one of two dual-threat quarterbacks on The Capital-Journal Top 11 this year. He’s joined by Great Bend senior Jacob Murray, who re-wrote the Panther record book for total offense and touchdowns in leading the Panthers to the Class 5A semifinals.

“I’m kind of at a loss for words as to how well he did,” Rossville coach Derick Hammes said. “I knew he was going to be good and he turned into being for us the kind of quarterback we needed, but it was more than that. His competitiveness really showed through and he was super-athletic. He was all-everything for us this year.”
