James Booth Passes Away
Delia:James C. "Jim" Booth, 77, passed away Saturday, January 28, 2017 at the Community Hospital in St. Marys.
He was born May 19, 1939 at Emporia, the son of Russell and Elsie Marie Shelinbarger Booth. Jim was raised in Osage County south of Osage City on the Maris Des Cygens River. After graduating from Lebo High School he attended Kansas State and Emporia State Universities.
Jim became a full time farmer in a partnership operation with his father and brother. He moved his family to Jackson County in 1970 due to the Federal Corp of Engineers purchase of ground for the Melvern Federal Reservoir. Jim along with his wife Jo and two sons operate J and J Farms west of Mayetta. He was a member of the Delia Presbyterian Church. Jim joined the Lebo Masonic Lodge in 1961 and transferred his membership to the Delia Lodge. He was a member of the Kansas Farm Bureau and served on many committees and held many offices. He was a 4-H community leader and had coached Baseball. He was currently serving on the Jackson County Rural Water Board No. 3 and the Kaw Valley Electric Election Board.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
On March 25, 1961 he was united in marriage to Jo Anne Whittington at the Osage City Presbyterian Church. She survives of the home.
Other survivors include his four sons, Jeffery (Cherri) Booth, Delia, Joe (Tonia) Booth, Mayetta, Jacy (Susan) Booth, Parkville, MO. and J.R. (Molly) Booth, Clinton, MO; his brother, Milton Booth, Emporia; 11 grandchildren.
Celebration of Life Services will be at 10:00 A.M. Thursday, February 2, 2017 at the Delia Presbyterian Church. Graveside services will be at 3:00 P.M. Thursday afternoon at the Arvonia Cemetery south of Osage City. Mr. Booth will lie in state and the family will receive friends from 5:30 until 7:30 Wednesday, February 1, 2017 with a short service at 7:30 P.M. at Piper Funeral Home in St. Marys. Betty Lou Smith Passes Away
Betty Lou Smith, 82, Silver Lake, died Tuesday, January 24, 2017, at Midland Hospice House. She was born March 29, 1934, at Marysville, the daughter of Ben Amon and Mae (Gellinger) Messick. Betty graduated from Marysville High School. Before retiring she worked at Luce Press Clippings.
She was a member of Rossville Christian Church. She enjoyed reading, sewing, and her Bichon Frise, Prince.
She was married to Lester N. Smith, Sr., on April 6, 1953, at Marysville. He preceded her in death on March 30, 2004. Surviving are her children: Lester N. Smith, Jr. (Linda) of Valley Falls and Jeanne Linsey (Dean) of Silver Lake; a sister: JoAnn Lacy of Marysville; four grandchildren: Rebecca Whipple (Shane), Michelle Brown (Chris) Sarah Caleb (Matt) and Colin Linsey (Aimee); and great-grandchildren: Cassandra, Kevin, Kris, Kaiden, Allison, Brooke, Tyler, Logan, and Laine. Memorial services will be at 1:00 PM, Saturday, January 28, 2017, at Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, 245 NW Independence Avenue, Topeka. KWCA Rankings For 321A Wrestling
The Dawgs dropped back to 9th in the 321A rankings this week. Bryce Gfeller is still ranked at #2 in the 138 lb class and Isiah Luellen is still at #1 in the 160 lb class.
Mary Carr Passes Away
Mary L. Carr, 84, formerly of Topeka, Kansas, died January 23, 2017 at the Missouri Baptist Medical Center, Town and Country, Missouri.
She was born August 15, 1932, the daughter of George Raymond and Lucy (Blandin) Burns. She graduated from Circleville High School. Mary married Darrell E. Carr on September 1, 1956. On September 1, 2016 they celebrated 60 years of marriage. He preceded her in death on September 18, 2016. She was a member of the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation, serving on the Charitable Donation Committee. She was a member of St. Matthew Catholic Church in Topeka, active for many years in their Woman's Organization and at Adoration. She was also a long-time volunteer at Let s Help in Topeka. Prior to her marriage, Mary was employed as a supervisor by Hallmark Cards in Topeka; she later worked for many years as a bookkeeper at Stone Container in Cincinnati, Ohio. Mary enjoyed painting, sewing, gardening, dancing, and water aerobics; most of all, she enjoyed her grandchildren. She is survived by her children, Bradley Brad (Mattie) Carr, Topeka, William Bill (Greda) Carr, Aberdeen, South Dakota, Julie (Michael) Dimeo, Issaquah, Washington, Catherine Cathy (Richard) Wieder, Chesterfield, Missouri; three grandchildren, Sarah Wieder, Denver, Colorado, Rob Wieder, Chicago, Illinois, and Dan Wieder, Chesterfield, Missouri; and one great-grandson, Troy Chalcraft, Eatonville, Washington. Other survivors include her sisters, Theresa (Wayne) McNary, Ozawkie, and Julia (Philip) Kennedy, Topeka; and sisters-in-law, Donna Burns (Martin, deceased) of Holton, and Ruth Burns (James, deceased) of North Carolina. She was preceded in death by three other brothers, Philip Burns (Bernadette, deceased), Edwin Burns (Bonnie, deceased), and Billy Burns.
Mary will lie in state after 2:00 pm Thursday at Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home in Topeka, where a Rosary will be prayed at 6:00 pm. The family will receive friends following the Rosary until 8:30 pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 am Friday at St. Matthew Catholic Church, with graveside service at 1:30 pm at the Rossville Cemetery. Schumacher On Area Athlete Of Week List
Cole Schumacher was one of the ten athletes in the running for Capital-Journal Area Athlete of the Week for this week. Schumacher led Rossville to the
title at the Jefferson North Invitational, averaging 14.7 points. He
scored 12 in the title-game win over Jefferson North and had a tourney
high of 22.
