Gertrude Overstreet Passes Away

    Gertrude Marie Overstreet, 95, of Rossville, Kansas, passed away February 27, 2018 at the Rossville Health Care. 
    Visitation was Thursday, March 8, 2018 at Davidson Funeral Home from 6:00-7:00 p.m. Graveside service  at Rochester Cemetery, March 9, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. 

Arthur Decker (49) Passes Away

Arthur Gerald Decker, 87 passed away Monday, March 26, 2018 at a local hospital after sustaining injuries from a fall at his home. 

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Lois, his sons, Brent and wife Loan, Bryce and wife Tricia, daughter, Emily, four grandsons, Darrin, Nickolas, Braydn and Issak and his younger sister, Charlotte resides in St. Mary's, Kansas and extended family members. He is preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Mary Decker, sister, Winnie, and brothers, Robert and Willis. 

Mr. Decker was born and raised in Rossville, Kansas and later became a lifelong resident of Topeka, Kansas. In his early years, Mr. Decker worked at his parents' farm. After high school, he served in the Navy and later in the Marines during the Korean War. He worked at Goodyear for 38 years before retiring. Mr. Decker was an active member of the Elmont United Methodist Church, Shriners, The Marine Corp League and the local Lincoln Club. His hobbies included antique cars, antique toys, working in the yard and taking care of his beloved pets. He was a good father and husband and was always there to help anyone in need. 

Funeral services for Arthur will begin at 11:00 a.m. Friday at the Elmont United Methodist Church, 6635 NW Church Lane, where his family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until service time. Private burial will be at Half Day Cemetery.

MEL Forensics

    Rossville High hosted the MEL Forensics tournament of Mar 27.  League champions include Hannah Miller in Poetry and Abigail Escobar in Serious Solo.  Abigail McCrory and Kaleb Badura are back to back duet champs.

Taylor Kirk (15) At Washburn U. Softball

    The Washburn University softball team played four games over the weekend, winning all four.
They beat Lincoln University of Missouri from Jefferson City, MO, 8-0 and 12-0 before defeating Lindenwood University of St. Charles, MO,  9-1 and 8-2.  Taylor Kirk (Rossville) had a good series collecting five hits and seven RBIs, which included two home runs, in twelve at bats for a .417 batting average  and an impressive .917 slugging percentage for the 4 game series.

Alumni Dinner June 2, 2018

Mark your calendar.  Rossville High School Reunion, Dinner and Scholarship presentation will be held June 2, 2018 at the Dekat Parish Center in Rossville.  Social Hour begins at 4:00 with a catered dinner served at 6:00.  The scholarship winners will be introduced and a short program will follow.  All Rossville High graduates are invited to attend.  Invitations to previous attendees will be mailed the middle of April.  For questions or to be included on the mailing list, call June at 785-584-6080 or email June Burgett at meburg@embarqmail.com.

Alumni Foundation Awards Four Scholarships

The Rossville High Alumni Foundation will be awarding four $1,500 scholarships this Spring.  These scholarships are funded by the Alumni Foundation and a grant from the Prairie Band Potawatomie Nation.  Any graduating senior planning to continue their education in college, vocational-tech or trade school is eligible to apply for these scholarships.  The scholarship application is available at the High School.  Deadline for submitting the application is April 11th.

Vera Cutsinger Passes Away


Vera M. (Burress) Cutsinger, 92, of Topeka, passed away on March 21, 2018. Born June 28, 1925 in Rossville, she was the daughter of Melvin and Grace Burress.

Vera married Everett Cutsinger on October 5, 1944 in Oskaloosa, Kansas. Together they owned several businesses including Plaza Cleaners for over 20 years.

Survivors include her son: Larry Cutsinger; granddaughter: Ann (Bradley) Ellebracht and great-grandchildren: Delaney and Benjamin Ellebracht. 

Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m., Monday, March 26, 2018 at Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel, 1321 SW 10th Avenue. Interment will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be held Sunday from 1:00-3:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

Kenneth Houck Passes Away


Delia:  Kenneth R. Houck, 81, passed away Tuesday, March 20, 2018 at the Midland Hospice House in Topeka.
He was born  June 21, 1936 at rural Delia on the same farm that he lived on all of his life, the son of Leroy and Elsie W. Jacobson Houck.  Kenneth graduated from Delia High School in 1954.
Kenneth was a farmer and stockman.  He was a member of the Delia Presbyterian Church where he had served as an elder.  He was a member of District No. 3 I.H. Collectors Club, the KFHA (Kansas Fur Harvester Association) and a past member of the Delia Lions Club.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
On August 17, 1974 he was united in marriage to Linda Winkler at Tecumseh, She survives of the home.  He is also survived by his son, Chris Houck, Delia.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 A.M. Thursday, March 29, 2018 at the Delia Presbyterian Church, Delia, Kansas.  Interment will be in the Delia Cemetery.  Mr. Houck will lie in state and the family will receive friends from 6:00 until 7:30 P.M. Wednesday, March 28th at Piper Funeral Home in St. Marys.  Memorial contributions may be made to the Delia Presbyterian Church or to Midland Care and sent in care of Piper Funeral Home, 714 Maple Street, St. Marys, Kansas 66536.
