Robert Sage Passes Away

Dover—Robert L. Sage, 90, passed away Tuesday, May 15, 2018 at his rural Dover home.
He was born April 12, 1928 on a farm near Dover the son of John L. and Mary Moran Sage. Bob was raised in the Dover community and graduated from Dover High School in 1946. He served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict.
Bob was a farmer and stockman all of his life. He served over 30 years on the Kaw Valley REA Board. He was a member of the Dover American Legion and had served on Dover School Board. Bob was a member of, and was president of Shawnee County Fire District No.4. He also was a member of Wabaunsee County Farm Bureau and served as president for two years. Bob was a past member of Dover Lodge No. 490 IOOF.
On May 8, 1955 he was united in marriage to Caryolne L. Mischler in Topeka. She preceded him in death on April 30, 1999. He later married Lucille Leach on April 14, 2001. She died March 5, 2013.
Survivors include two sons, Roger (Brenda) Sage, Maple Hill and Rob (Denise) Sage, Dover; two daughters, Janet Sage Bruce, Dover and Beverly (Terry) Weber-Cobb, Topeka; a brother, Harold (Adell) Sage, Dover; a sister, Shirley (Fred) Jepson, Topeka; a sister-in-law Shirley (Chris) Davis and family, Salina; grandchildren, Amos, Lacey, Jessie, Lindsay, Ross, Hallie, Reed and Raven; 8 great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be at 11:00 A.M. Friday, May 18, 2018 at the Dover Cemetery followed by a Military Service. Mr. Sage will lie in state and the family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. Thursday, May 17, 2018 at the Dover Community Center. MEL Track and Field

At the MEL league track and field,  the RHS girls team was 4th of six teams.  The boys team was 6th of the six teams.

Top Five finishes were turned in by the following, with Trevor Johnson, Holden Hurla and Bo Reeves winning their events.

Avery Anderson was 2nd in 100 M dash, 3rd in 200 M dash, and 3rd in long jump.
Kylee  Badura was 4th in the 800 M run.
Breaira Bergstresser was 4th in 1600 M run.
Julia Streit was 2nd in the 3200 M run.
Jordan Bittner was 5th in the 100 M Hurdles and 5th in the 200 M Hurdles.
Mary Shults was 5th in Shot Put.
Maura Buhler was 5th in Javelin
Trevor Johnson was 1st in 100 M dash and 1st in 200 M dash.
Ben Price was 4th in 400 M dash.
Holden Hurla was 1st in the 1600 M run.
Bo Reeves was first in the Long Jump.

Derek Balch Is Student Of Week

    Derek Balch assisted another student in finding a folder (that was full of homework) and turned it into the office. The other student was able to avoid a handful of zeros due to Derek's kindness!

Rowena Gannon Passes Away

Rowena M. Gannon, 86, of Rossville passed away Wednesday, May 16, 2018 at the St. Marys Manor.
She was born May 16, 1932 at Muscotah the daughter of Russell and Gladys Sisco Hollenbeck. Rowena moved to Topeka at an early age and graduated from Topeka High School.
Rowena had worked at Nellie's Variety Store in Rossville and clerked sales for her son. She was a member of the Rossville United Methodist Church and the UMW at the church. Rowena was a charter member (65 years) of Jimmie Lillard Post No. 31 of the American Auxiliary in Rossville. She enjoyed sewing, quilting and crafts. Rowena collected Raggedy Ann Dolls and had made many as gifts.
On January 6, 1950 she was united in marriage to Leo H. Gannon. He preceded her in death on April 28, 2017. Rowena was also preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Bud, Dee and Dwayne; sisters, Norma, Marilyn and Bonnie.
Survivors include two sons, Randell (Cindy) Gannon, Rossville and Vern (Sherri) Gannon, Manhattan; a daughter, Linda Lake, Manhattan; 5 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, May 19, 2018 at Piper Funeral Home in St. Marys. Interment will be in the Rossville Cemetery. Mrs. Gannon will lie in state and the family will receive friends from 6:00 until 7:30, Friday, May 18, 2018 at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Jimmie Lillard Post No. 31 of the American Legion Auxiliary and sent in care of Piper Funeral Home, 714 Maple Street, St. Marys, Kansas 66536. Lady Dawgs 2nd In Regional

The semi-finals and championship game were played May 15 in the Sabetha 3A softball  regional.
Rossville won their semi-final game against St. Marys 3-0.  On the other side of the bracket,  Silver Lake bear Riley Co. 10-0.  The Lady Dawgs and Eagles met for the championship game which was won by Silver Lake 4-1.

    The Rossville baseball team lost their first round regional game against Council Grove 4-2 in five innings.

Alex Little Engagement


Kristin Jean Conley and Alex Jordan Little, of Manhattan announce their engagement.
Kristin is the daughter of Dwight and Julie Conley, of Gypsum. She is a graduate of Southeast of Saline High School, Gypsum, and Kansas State University with a degree in political science. She works as a district representative for U.S. Sen. Jerry Moran.
Alex is the son of Randal and Nancy Little, of Rossville. He is a graduate of Rossville High School, Rossville, and North Central Kansas Technical College, in Beloit. He is employed by Bayer Construction, of Manhattan.
The wedding is planned for July 7.

Alumni Foundtion Scholarships

    The Rossville High Alumni Scholarship Foundation has announced the four winners of $1,500 scholarships.   The scholarships are given to graduating seniors of Rossville High School.   The  winners are Kylee Badura, Maura Buhler, Jalyn Porter and Isaiah Luellen.

Alumni Foundation Dinner

    Plans have been finalized for the 9th annual Rossville High Alumni reunion and party to be held on June 2nd.  The four $1,500 scholarship winners have been invited to the party and will tell the group about their plans for college.   Travis Van Vleck, a former scholarship winner and principal of Rossville Grade School, will speak to the group also.  All alumni are invited to attend.   A catered dinner starts at 6:00 with social time at 4:00.   Cost for the party is $22.50 per person.   Proceeds go to the Scholarship Fund.  Registration is requested.  The invitation follows.  Contact June at 785-584-6080 or email meburg@embarqmail.com with questions.

The Rossville High School Alumni Scholarship Foundation has awarded over $20,000.00 in scholarships to graduating seniors of Rossville High since 1999.  An endowment account was established in 2007.   Interest from this account and a grant received from the Prairie Band Potawatomie Nation will be used for scholarships to be given in May.   This year we will give four scholarships in the amount of $1,500 each during this party.   We thank all alumni and friends for your tax deductible donations to this fund.  Join us for the reunion party and/or consider making a donation to our Foundation.
Cost for the evening is $22.50. 
Meal by Wanda’s Country Cookin’.  
Program will follow the dinner.
