Kirk & Washburn In MIAA Tournament

Washburn won the first game of the MIAA softball tournament on Wed. in a close 2-1 game against Emporia State.   Taylor Kirk recorded two at-bats but had no hits and one base on balls.

Washburn lost the tournament semi-final game against Missouri Western  by a 4-1 score.
Taylor Kirk had 3 at-bats with one hit, a home run.   Thus she had the only run and only RBI for the team.

Washburn lost their last game of the season to Northeastern State U. by a score of 3-2. This game was for 3rd place in the MIAA League tournament.  Taylor had one hit and one RHI in her 5 at-bats.

For the season,  Taylor had a batting average of .347 and slugging average of .693.  She had 14 of the team's 25 home runs and led the team with 17 walks.  She also led the team in RBIs with 51.

Rossville High senior  Jordan Bittner, daughter  of Kevin and Angie Bittner, has been nominated to the Capital Journal All Academic Team.

George Sullivan Passes Away

George Sullivan of Rossville, Kansas was called to Heaven to be with his Lord and Savior, and beloved wife of 70 years, Marie on May 3, 2019.

George Edward Sullivan was born to Michael B. Sullivan and Anna D. (Yeadon) Sullivan on February 22, 1925. He grew up in Solomon, Kansas with his 11 brothers and sisters, they all preceded him in death. He fell in love with Marie Corcoran at first sight and told her brother that he was going to marry her. They were married in March of 1949. Together they raised four children. He is survived by Anna Marie Alvarez, Peg Sullivan, William Sullivan (Kay) and Janice Craven (Kelly). He was a proud Grandpa to 10 Grandchildren, Jason Sullivan (Mona), Matt Sullivan, David Sullivan (Alicia), Stephanie DuBose (Demitre), Katie Kincheloe (Matt), Cody Alvarez (Liz), Caitlin Alvarez, Robert Heil (Beth), Christopher Heil (Jennie) and Garrett Heil . He was blessed with 15 Great Grandchildren during his life. George was loved and cherished by his family especially all his nephews and nieces.

He served in the Navy during WW II and the Korean War.   He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign War and American Legion. After serving his country he trained in Salina, Kansas to be a Lineman for Kansas Power and Light. In 1956 he moved his family to Rossville to take on the role as District Manager. He retired from Westar (KP&L) after 43 dedicated years. George was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers for 70 years.

George found the time and energy to always volunteer. He was a Member of the Lions Club, 4-H Leader, Boy Scout Leader, Rossville High School Booster Club, and served on the board at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church. George and Marie loved their volunteer work with the Rossville Senior Center and at the age of 92, he was still delivering meals to seniors that were homebound. The Rossville community honored George on August 8, 1987. They made a proclamation that it would be "George Sullivan Day and he served as the Grand Marshall of the Rossville Tall Corn Festival Parade. The plaque he received is engraved, George Sullivan, In Appreciation for over 30 Years of Service to the Rossville Area Community, Our World is a Brighter Because of You." He was a shining example to his children, grandchildren and to everyone who knew him on the importance of helping and giving to others.

When he was not on his lawn mower, swinging on his porch swing or watching KU, KSU or the KC Chiefs, he would spend time with Marie at the casino. And yes, he did win a bass boat once but took the money instead!  The Sullivan Home got a new roof that year!

Our hearts are full of gratitude for all those who helped to care for our Dad during these past few months. You were his Angels on Earth.

The visitation will be held on Wednesday, May 8, 2019 from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M., followed by the Rosary at 7:00 at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church, Rossville, Kansas. The funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, May 9, 2019 at 10:00 A.M. at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church, Rossville, Kansas. He will be laid to rest in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Solomon, Kansas at 3:00 P.M.  Donations may be made to Rossville Senior Center, Mt. Calvary Cemetery Fund or donor's choice in lieu of flowers.

Sharon (Davis) (60) Pierce Passes Away

Sharon’s  Story

Sharon Ione Davis entered this world on December 13^th, 1942 to her parents Donice Ione (Marney) and Francis E. Davis of Rossville, Ks.   Sharon spent her childhood growing up on the Mulvane Ranch and Farms West of Rossville where her father had became Manager and a Business Partner. The old ranch house and most of the ranch buildings were destroyed by the flood of 1951 when the Kansas River overflowed its banks.  A new ranch home was built after the flood waters receded and the Davis family remained to rebuild the ranch.      

Sharon participated in Brownie and Girl Scouts as a young girl and was a member of the Rossville 4-H Club where she raised and entered her prize winning 4-H calves in the 4-H Fair. 

Sharon was attending a sewing class in the Home Economic’s Department at Rossville High School on January 14^th, 1958 when her mother drove by ‘honking the horn’.  ‘Donice’ was on the way to the hospital to deliver Sharon’s younger sister ‘Candace Davis’.  Despite their age difference, Candace and Sharon formed a loving relationship and shared many good times growing up and throughout their lives.

Sharon’s Classmates will remember Sharon as a cheerleader in high school and riding around in her ‘Classic 1959 Black Impala’. Many ‘Happy Days’ were spent with her friends and classmates having numerous slumber parties, campouts, horse-back and hay-rack rides,  and just getting off the school bus in time to watch Dick Clark’s American Band Stand. It was always ‘fun’ to go to the Community Center on Saturday nights for a tri-city ‘sock hop’sponsored by KTOP Disk Jockey Charlie Christian.   

Sharon graduated from Rossville High School in 1960 and in 1961 she earned a Secretarial Certificate from the Clarks Business School in Topeka, Kansas, where she became employed as a secretary in the office at the Topeka State Hospital.  In 1963, she moved to Phoenix, AZ and she obtained a position as a Secretary and Title Clerk for Stewart Title.  A few years later, she returned from Phoenix to Rossville to work with her dad on the ranch. ‘Francis Davis’ was over-heard saying that ‘Sharon’ was one of the best truck drivers that he had ever hired to fill silos.

Sharon loved horses and was good at barrel racing.  She was often seen in local parades and rodeos.  In 1971 she was elected Queen of the Rossville Centennial and rode in the Centennial’s parade in a horse drawn carriage.  Sharon’s sister Candace, and her dad, Francis Davis, also rode their horses in the Rossville Centennial. 

Sharon enjoyed home making, working with her mother and sister in arts and crafts, especially ceramics.  Ranch hands would testify that she was a ‘good cook’ too.

In 1978 and having an adventuresome spirit Sharon wanted a new career so she took her love of horses to the Denver, Colorado area where she had answered an ad for a ‘Training Assistant and Groomsman’ in the horse racing business.  Thus, she assisted in training and groomed numerous race horses in Denver, Lincoln, Omaha, and even in Chicago. She met her future husband, Michael Pierce in Nebraska.  They were married in Lincoln on June 17, 1980 and they became business and marriage partners for over 42 years. The couple settled in Paulden, AZ, a small community located near Prescott,  AZ .  Not only did Sharon and Mike race, own and train horses they sponsored two Venezuelan families obtain U. S. citizenship and they were also ‘Big Brothers’ to two boys. Together, Sharon and Michael continued in the horse racing business until December of 2018 when they sold the last of their horses in order for Michael to devote full time to caring for Sharon.

Sharon Passed away on April 30, 2019, in Prescott, AZ after a long illness.  A Memorial Service will be held at the Rossville Cemetery near her parents gravesites with Piper’s Funeral Home of St. Marys, Ks. officiating  on May 25th at 11:00 a.m.   

Sharon is survived by her husband, Michael Pierce of Paulden, AZ and Sharon’s younger sister, Candace Davis of Monett, Missouri along with numerous cousins both on the Marney side, as well as the Davis sides of the family.

Baseball Team Splits With Wamego

    The RHS baseball team split their games with Wamego on April 29 at Joe Campbell Stadium.
The Dawgs won the first 5-4 but lost the second 3-0.  Rossville is now 8-7 for the season.

    The Lady Dawgs split with Wamego on April 29, winning the first game 13-9, but losing the second one 12-2 in five innings.
    Rossville is now 7-7 for the season.

        The Rossville High School Alumni Scholarship Foundation has awarded over $26,000.00 in scholarships to graduating seniors of Rossville High since 1999.  An endowment account was established in 2007.   Interest from this account and a grant received from the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation will be used for scholarships to be given.   This year we plan to honor the three winners of $1500 scholarships at this party.   We thank all alumni and friends for your tax deductible donations to this fund.  Join us for the reunion party and/or consider making a donation to our Foundation.

Joseph Muller Passes Away

    It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Joseph T. Muller (Rossville, Kansas), born in Saint Marys, Kansas, who passed away on April 28, 2019, at the age of 83, leaving to mourn family and friends. Family and friends can send flowers and condolences in memory of the loved one. Leave a sympathy message to the family on the memorial page of Joseph T. Muller to pay them a last tribute.

    He was predeceased by: his parents, Frank Muller and Catherine Bennett Muller; his siblings, Francis Muller and Bonnie Brunin. He is survived by his children, Joseph T. Jr. and Tricia. Memorial contributions may be made to the Kansas Army National Guard Museum or Grace Hospice and sent in care of Piper Funeral Home, 714 Maple Street, St. Marys, Kansas 66536.
    A funeral service will be held on Thursday, May 2nd 2019 at 10:00 AM at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church (208 W Bertrand Ave, St Marys, KS 66536, USA). Visitation will be held on Thursday, May 2nd 2019 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM.
