James Adkins Passes Away (Updated)

James Louis (Lou) Adkins, 83, died peacefully Thursday October 22, 2020 at Mercy Regional in Springfield, MO.

He was born August 28, 1937 in Topeka, Kansas. The son of James Preston Adkins and Viola Thompson Adkins.  He grew up in the Rossville/Dover area and graduated from Rossville High School.

Lou was loving father, grandfather and brother. Lou was a devote Christian and was always there when someone needed a helping hand, He will be missed by all of those whose lives he touched.

Lou was preceded in death by his daughter Valerie Eastman; his brother Otis Reed; his sister LaVerne Hoffman: and his sister Lorraine Adkins.

Survivors include his children: Janet Adkins, Barnes, KS; Jim Adkins, Topeka, KS and Margaret Shelman, Berryville, AR; grandchildren: Chris Adkins, Barnes, Ks; Michelle Brammer, Barnes, KS; Chance Eastman, Overbrook, KS; Christi Eastman, Michigan Valley, KS; Heather Spencer, Berryville, AR; Jenna Stum, Delia, KS; Shawna Isakson, Topeka, KS, and Shane Shelman, Berryville, AR. and over 20 great grandchildren.

Lou had a passion for hunting, fishing, traveling and playing his guitar.  He loved his bluegrass music. He was always quoting phrases from John Wayne movies, his favorite quote was “never apologize, it’s a sign of weakness” which he told to anyone who apologized to him. He loved to pass out gold dollars to little kids and pretty ladies, he found joy in the way the kid’s eyes would light up. He was also a beekeeper for a while.

Lou got his passion for refrigeration work while working alongside his best friend Dean Smith, when they were younger, working on the ice cars on the trains in Topeka. He later worked at the Menninger Foundation in Topeka, retiring from there in the late 1970’s. In 1981 he moved to Eureka Springs, AR starting his business Adkins Refrigeration, which he managed until his retirement in 2010.

He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Dover, Kansas

Lou was a member of First Christian Church in Eureka Springs. He enjoyed serving his church as a deacon/elder and Sunday school teacher.  Lou started the annual fish fry several years ago for the congregation that continues to this day.

Visitation will be Friday October 30, 2020 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Piper Funeral Home in St Mary’s Kansas.  Graveside services will be Saturday October 31, 2020 at 10:00 am in the Dover Cemetery at Dover Kansas.

A memorial service is planned in Eureka Springs at First Christian Church for November 21, 2020 at 10:00 am.

Volleyball At Rock Creek

      The Lady Dawgs split at Rock Creek on Oct. 20,  winning one match 25-20 and 25-23, but losing the other 19-25, 25-20, 22-25.    The team is 7-3 in the MEL and 24-9 overall.

      They next play at the  3A Sub-State tournament in St. Marys, Sat., Oct. 24

Horak Up For Area Athlete Of Week

Among those nominated for the Capital-Journal Athlete of the Week. 

TORREY HORAK, ROSSVILLE FOOTBALL: Horak came up big in the Bulldawgs’ No. 1 vs. No. 2 showdown with arch rival Silver Lake. Horak ran for 181 yards and three touchdowns and threw for 186 yards and two scores to lead Rossville to a 50-35 victory.

Charles Martin Passes Away

Mr. Charles D. Martin,  who has lived in Emmett, St. Marys, Maple Hill, and now Meridan, passed away on Oct. 15, 2020.  You can read his obituary at:

Rossville Drug Arrest

From the Rossville Police:

October 17th, 2020 just before 9pm at US 24 Highway & Crawford east of Rossville: The on-duty Rossville Officer had just completed a traffic stop when an SUV pulled in behind him. The driver got out and was acting very nervous. The officer immediately noticed the vehicle tag expired two years ago. The driver stated he had just visited Rossville and had a flat tire. Shortly thereafter, the driver admitted his license was revoked and he had no insurance. An open container of alcohol was in plain sight in the front seat and the driver had a warrant out of the City of Topeka for Failure to Appear in court. A Shawnee County Sheriff’s Deputy was requested as a backup officer. Further investigation revealed methamphetamine, marijuana, prescription opiates, drug scales, and other paraphernalia to distribute narcotics in the suspect’s possession. The contraband was seized, the vehicle was impounded, and towed from the scene. The driver was arrested and transported to the Shawnee County Jail. The case will be forwarded to the Shawnee County District Attorney for consideration of prosecution of multiple misdemeanor and felony charges including driving while revoked, driving while a habitual violator, possession of illegal opioids, and possession of narcotics with intent to distribute. The Rossville Police Department wishes to thank the Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office for their assistance with this incident.

Abilene Volleyball Quad Tournament

     The Lady Dawgs competed at the Abilene Quad on Oct. 17 winning one match and losing two.

    They lost to Buhler 23-25, 16-25, then defeated Abilene 25-12, 25-22, then lost to Smoky Valley 22-25, 25-21, 22-25,  Their overall record now stands at 23-8. 

    Their next matches will be at Rock Creek on Tue, followed by the Sub-State on Sat.  

Richard Keller (44) Passes Away

 Richard L. Keller, 93, died Thursday, October 15, 2020, at Midland Hospice House in Topeka.

He was born November 10, 1926, at Delia, the son of Mabel King Keller and Levi Keller. "Dick" graduated from Rossville High School in 1944, and soon after enlisted in the United States Army and was stationed at Nagoya, Japan as a sergeant of a Motor Pool Division.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, George and Charles Keller.

He worked for Kansas Power & Light for over 43 years retiring in 1989. He was a member of the Catholic Faith and was a member of Jimmie Lillard Post No. 31 of the American Legion in Rossville. Dick loved to fish, hunt, and travel. In 1954 he built the house that they still live in.

On October 2, 1948, he was united in marriage to Mary Katherine Allen at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in St. Marys. They were married 72 years. She survives of the home.

Other survivors include his son, Rick, and wife Janelle, Topeka; a grandson, Chase Keller, Topeka; a sister, Jaunita Raab, Topeka.

A prayer service will be at 10:30 A.M. Tuesday, October 20, 2020, at Piper Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 9:30 until the service. Interment will be in West Lawn Memorial Gardens, Topeka.
