Forrest Kidney Passes Away

Forrest Kidney has passd away but no obituary available. Forrest was a long-time resident of Rossville and owned Kidney Insurance in Rossville; and had four kids attend RHS: Mike 1979, Jim 1982, Bryan 1986, and Tina 1989.

 

Louzetta Mahan Passes Away

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the death of Louzetta Isabelle Mahan of Rossville, Kansas, born in Biggar, Saskatchewan on  Oct. 19, 1939, who passed away on February 9, 2022, at the age of 82, 

She was predeceased by : her parents, James Roy and Margaret Glover Moore; her spouse Dale Paul Mahan; and her siblings, Leon and Opal.

She is survived by : her children, Cherry Mahan (RHS class of 1978) and Robin Mahan (RHS class of 1983) (Sheri); her sisters, Cherry Morgan Collins and Marcia K. Moore Collins; and her grandchildren, Logan Mahan of Scottsdale, AZ and Matalyn.

State and Sub-State Basketball Schedules

 Class 3A, 2A

Class 2A will have 66 schools and 3A will have 64 schools per class. These schools will conduct 8 sub-state tournaments of eight/nine schools. Groupings are based on a geographical basis after host sites are determined.

  • Seeding will be completed on Wednesday, February 23, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. Brackets will be posted on the KSHSAA website after they are verified.
  • Monday, February 28 Class 3A Boys and 2A Girls will play quarterfinal games at the higher seeded team.
  • Tuesday, March 1 Class 3A Girls and 2A Boys will play quarterfinal games at the higher seeded team.
  • Thursday, March 3 Class 3A Boys and 2A Girls will play semifinal contests at the sub-state host site.
  • Friday, March 4 Class 3A Girls and 2A Boys will play semifinal contests at the sub-state host site.
  • Saturday, March 5 Class 2A Girls and Class 3A boys will play at 5:30 p.m. with the winner advancing to the state tournament. Class 3A Girls and Class 2A boys will play at 7:00 p.m. with the winner advancing to the state tournament.

Donald McGranahan Passes Away


Donald V. McGranahan, 86, passed away Tuesday, February 1, 2022, at a Topeka hospital.

He was born August 4, 1935, at Emmett, the son of George G. and Cleo B. Bartlett McGranahan. Don graduated from Emmett High School. He served in the Army National Guard and lived in Rossville for several years. 

Don worked for Goodyear Tire and Rubber in Topeka for 41 ½ years. He was a member of the Emmett United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Galen D. McGranahan; a stepson, Damon Magette, a son-in-law Terry Kubes, and a grandson, Jared Cheek.

Don and Janice K. Magette were united in marriage on March 24, 1977, at Topeka. She survives of the home.

Other survivors include his children, Debra Kubes, Ness City, Trudy Padilla, Paola, Donald (LeAnn) McGranahan, Topeka and Bruce McGranahan, Wamego; a stepson, Brandon (Joan) Magette, St. Marys; two daughters, Debra Kubes, Ness City, and Trudy Padilla, Paola; 16 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren

Iona Baumchen Passes Away

Iona Graf Baumchen, 87, of St. Marys  died Feb. 4, 2022, at Lawrence Presbyterian Manor where she had lived for 26 months.

She taught in Maple Hill for three years before moving to St. Marys Grade School where she taught until she retired. She loved to teach reading and language and enjoyed developing many hands-on projects for her classroom. 

She married Daniel Peter Baumchen on Aug. 7, 1954, at Emmett. They lived in Clay Center before moving to St. Marys in 1957. The Baumchens were married 65 years.

She worked as the recreation director for the City of St Marys and was responsible for everything from scheduling umpires to booking bands for dances. Iona managed the St Marys Swimming Pool for seven years and directed a comprehensive American Red Cross swimming program for hundreds of children in St. Marys and surrounding communities. She served Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in a variety of ways, including being a lector and teaching CCD classes.  Iona worked many years at the St. Marys Community Food Pantry, faithfully serving people weekly. A special job was preparing holiday food baskets.

The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. until the rosary at 7 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 10 at Piper Funeral Home, 714 Maple St., St. Marys. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Friday, Feb. 11 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, St. Marys. Interment will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.

Winnie Ellis Passes Away



Maple Hill-Winnie L. Ellis, 87, passed away early Monday, February 7, 
2022, at a Topeka hospital.

She was born in Lola Township Cherokee County Kansas on November 9,
1934, the daughter of Paul A, and Beulah G. Craine Richards. Winnie was
raised in the Oswego community.

Winnie along with her husband Dean owned and operated the B&B Café,
Mr. D's and D& W Snack Bar all in St. Marys. She had worked at Nickerson
Farm's at Paxico and Rezac Sale Barn in St. Marys. While living in
Richardson, TX, she worked in the lunchroom at the local school. Winnie had
been an Avon representative and a Stanley/Fuller Brush Agent. She was a
member of the St. Marys Bible Baptist Church and the Maple Hill Senior
Center.

On July 25, 1956, Winnie was united in marriage to Marvin Dean Ellis at
St. Marys. He preceded her in death on March 15, 2019. She was also
preceded in death by her parents and two sisters Paula and LaDorna.

Survivors include two sons, Larry D. (Ellen) Ellis, Springfield, MO, and
Steven W. Ellis, Delia; her daughter, Lynette L. Muller, Manhattan, a brother,
JA (Pam) Richards, Des Moines, IA, and her beloved dog Kandi; 5
grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, February 12, 2022, at Piper
Funeral Home. Interment will be in Valley View Cemetery, St. Marys. Winnie
will lie in state and the family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M
Friday at the funeral home.

Amanda and Caila Hill Combine For 40

 Amanda and Caila Hill each contributed greatly in Kansas Wesleyan University's 87-50 win over the U. of Saint Mary on Feb. 3 in Leavenworth.

Amanda had 22 points on 7 of 14 shooting including 4 of 5 at 3 point range and 4 of 6 at the FT line.  She also had 11 rebounds, 6 assists, 3 steals, and 1 block.

Caila Hill had 18 points on 8 of 9 shooting and 2 for 2 on FTs.  She also had 1 rebound and 1 assist.

Joann Meenen Passes Away

Joann Darlene Heusted Meenen was born on June 28, 1929 in Clay Center, Kansas to Warren V. and Bertha McNeal Heusted.  She passed away on February 4, 2021 at her home in Topeka, Kansas where she lived with her daughter, Linda Brown.

 After moving to Topeka, she became of member of the Rossville Methodist Church. 

Services will be held at Rossville Methodist Church on Saturday, February 12th at 2:00 p.m. Masks will be required at the church. Inurnment will be at a later date in Riverdale Cemetery at Clifton, Kansas.
