RHS Baseball Players To Watch in 2022
Tops In Sports for Shawnee Co. Selected several baseball players to watch in 2022. Among them were:
KADEN BROWN, Rossville
A senior catcher/pitcher/outfielder, Brown earned second-team All-Shawnee County honors last season after helping the Bulldawgs post a 15-7 record. Brown hit .425 last spring with 25 runs scored and 16 runs batted in. As a pitcher Brown went 3-0 with an 0.38 ERA, recording 23 strikeouts in 18 innings pitched.
McGWYRE LEATHERS, Rossville
A senior third baseman/catcher, Leathers earned second-team All-Class 3A recognition last season after helping the Bulldawgs post a 15-7 record. Leathers, who also received All-Shawnee County honorable mention, hit .333 with 26 hits, 16 RBI and 14 runs scored.

Tops In Sports Top Picks to watch in Shawnee Co. Track and Field include.
AMELIA FOSTER, Rossville
A junior, Foster was a double state medalist for the Bulldawgs in the Class 3A state track meet last spring, taking sixth in the 400-meter dash and seventh in the 800 and earning All-Shawnee County honors. Foster was a regional champion in the 400 and 800 and was also a state qualifier for the 3A cross country meet last fall.
BRIAR GILLUM, Rossville
Gillum, a senior, posted a third-place finish in the Class 3A girls shot put last season at state and added an eighth-place state finish in the discus. An All-Shawnee County pick, Gillum had a season-best throw of 41 feet, 2.50 inches in the shot put and had a best of 126-6 in the discus. Gillum was a regional champion in the shot put.
Sofball Team Gets Wins Over Jeff West
The RHS varsity softball team got off to a good start with two lop-sided wins over non-MEL Jeff West, 13-3 and 11-0.

JoAnn Sulzen Passes Away
JoAnn worked at AT&T as a switchboard operator before her marriage and then was a homemaker for her family. JoAnn was well known for her love and kindness and welcomed everyone into her home. She was famous for her baking and sewing and loved her husband and children very much. She enjoyed family vacations and camping with them. JoAnn was greatly involved in her church and in the Altar & Rosary society of St. Vincent de Paul Church in KC, Immaculate Conception in ID, and a supporter of the New Immaculata Church in St. Marys, KS where her home has been for the last few years.
JoAnn married Paul J Sulzen on May 13, 1961, at St. Peter’s Cathedral, in Kansas City, KS. They raised 12 of their 13 children as “Baby Eddie” was directed to heaven shortly after his birth. JoAnn and Paul adopted 8 of their 13 children and they gave them a home of unending sacrifice and love. Her selflessness and sweet caring personality will be missed by everyone who had the pleasure of knowing her. She was preceded in death by her parents, her son Edwin, her grandsons Phillip Sulzen, and Edwin and Isaac Schwanbeck.
She is survived by her family: her beloved husband Paul, her 5 sons and their families, Rex, John & Mary Frances (14 children, 13 grandchildren), Ron & Patty (9 children, 5 grandchildren), Fr. Carl Sulzen, and James; her 7 daughters and their families: Mary Ann (2 children), Paula & Robert (11 children, 3 grandchildren), Lori & Marc (2 children), Celia & John (5 children), Angie (3 children), Maria & Marty (3 children) and Philomena; 50 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. Her brothers Paul and Gene Altenhofen and their wives remain among the living.
A Requiem Mass will be offered at 11:00 am, Thursday, March 31, at Assumption Chapel in St. Marys, KS. Interment will be in Our Lady of Peace Cemetery, St. Marys. “Mom” will lie in state and the family will receive friends on Wednesday from 2:00 – 4:00 pm at Piper Funeral Home. The Rosary will be on Wednesday evening at 5:20 in the Assumption chapel.

Maydean Swoboda Passes Away
Maydean was born in Clifton, Kansas, to John and Margaret Knoettgen on May 3,1924, the youngest of seven,
Maydean was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Roy, and all her siblings. Thirteen years after Roy's death, she began a friendship with fellow White Lakes walker Paul Moran, which developed over coffee into a "very great relationship." He also preceded her in death. Maydean is survived by her children, Deidre Michael (Harold) of Silver Lake, Kansas, Tegan Swoboda (Cindy) of Topeka, Kansas, Seth Swoboda (Joe Anarella) of Albany, New York, and Shad Swoboda of Kansas City, Missouri, as well as grandchildren, Megan Hewitt (Rich), Shanna Martin (John), Sarah Barkemeyer (Scott), Michael Swoboda (Olivia), and great-grandchildren, Eleanor, Ryan, Jonah, Kate, Charlie, and Miles.
She was a member of the Church of The Assumption/Mater Dei Assumption Catholic Church in Topeka from 1954 to the present. The family thanks the dedicated staff at Oakley Place of Rossville and the Midland Palliative and Hospice teams for their loving care and support in the past eleven months.
The rosary will be prayed at 5 p.m. Monday, March 28th, at Kevin Brennan Family Funeral Home, 2801 SW Urish Road, Topeka KS 66614, with visitation to follow until 7 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 29th, at Mater Dei Holy Name Catholic Church, 1114 SW 10th Avenue, Topeka KS 66604.

Kimberly Dick Passes Away
Kimberly K. “Kim” Dick, Delia, 58, passed away at her home on Wednesday, March 16, 2022.
She was born April 11, 1963, in Topeka, the daughter of Gene and Shirley Bond Irwin. Kim was raised in the Rossville community, where she attended school.
Kim married Mark Wisely, they later divorced. She married Bruce Dick in 2001. He survives at their home.
Other survivors include her daughter, Jessica Wisely, Silver Lake; her granddaughter, Mikayla Terry, Silver Lake; four sisters Debbie Irwin, Topeka, Kelly Irwin, Topeka, Angel Day, Rossville, and Tracey Woosley, Paris, KY.
Kim was preceded in death by her mother, Shirley, her father Gene, and a sister Karen Lira.
Memorial graveside services will be at 10:00 A.M. Saturday, April 2, 2022, at St. Clere Cemetery north of Emmett

Vaughn Flora Passes Away
Vaughn Flora was born Jan. 17, 1945 and died Mar 17, 2022. He lived in a number of Kansas communities in the state including several years in Delia while his children attended Rossville High. Vaughn is survived by his loving wife Julie Flora of the home as well as his children Troy Flora (RHS class of 1982), Topeka; Trent Flora (RHS class of 1984), Delia; and Trina (RHS class of 1988) Hand (J.D.) Augusta. He is also survived by his brother Jan Flora (wife Cornelia) of Ames, IA; and nieces Gabriela Flora of Denver and Natasha Flora Shoom-Kirsch (Matt) in Toronto, Canada. He had a slew of grandkids, great-grandkids and great nieces and nephews: Jessica Fisher (husband Jayson and children Zane Crouch, Rolly and Ryder Fisher); Kaylie Flora (and daughter Marlie Shae DeWald); Josie and Jett Hand; Lily Flora, and Sydney and Bailey Shoom-Kirsch. His step-kids are Rebecca Nelms (Pat) of Lincoln, NE; Danny Weisser (Ceil) of New York City; David Weisser (wife Jenny and children Elise, Marin, and Isaac) of Lincoln, NE; Dina Weisser-Holland (husband Chris and children Lilyana and Noah) of Lincoln, NE; and Debra Weisser (children Jonah and Austin) of Fort Collins, CO. Other survivors are his sister-in-law Katie Witham (husband Richard and children Katie Holt and Anna Lee) of Counce, TN.; Dan Michael (wife Debby and children Jennifer and Matthew) of Collierville, TN.; and Susan Stovall (husband Jimmy and children Little Jimmy. and Suzanne) of Memphis. He is also survived by Debby Sylvia, his assistant, who he called his guardian angel. He is preceded in death by his parents Leonard and Billie Flora.
