John Ntsch Is 3A Softball Coach Of Year

Sports in Kansas has named Rossville coach John Nitsch as the 3A Softball Coach of the Year: A Bulldawg alum, Nitsch led Rossville to the program’s first state title since 2000. He has coached softball at some level for 25+ years. Rossville took 4th at state in 2022. Finishing 20-4 overall this season, Rossville defeated Columbus, Southeast of Saline, and Santa Fe Trail for the 3A state championship.

WIBW Softball Story and Video

ROSSVILLE, Kan. (WIBW) - The Bulldawgs began postseason play red hot and they rode that momentum to their first state title in over two decades.

Rossville beat their War on 24 rival Silver Lake in the Regional Championship after the Eagles were ranked No. 1 all year.

The Bulldawgs cruised to a 19-7 win over Columbus in the Quarterfinals. Southeast of Saline was next in the Semifinals and RHS won that, 6-4 and untimaley that state trophy over Santa Fe Trail, 2-0.

”I think it’s going to make our program that much stronger because to me when you get that pressure and bullseye on you, it makes you work that much harder to stay on top and that’s what I tell our girls every time, we want to get there and stay there,” Head Coach Jon Nitsch said.

“We have eight juniors coming back, eight of our returning starters so moving forward I feel like we’ll definitely have our team coming back and have that momentum going into the year knowing how hard we need to work and just repeating it.” Junior Emma Mitchell said.

For junior Kinsey Perine, she’s proud of where the program has come and she hopes this will inspire the younger generation as well.

“I feel like the more people that see us succeed, they’ll come to our games and bring their kids to camps and little kids will look up to us and be like I want to be like them and then it’ll just continue to grow from there,” Perine said.

Rossville finishes the season at 20-4.

Defending 4A Champs Next For 14-0 RHS Softball

 From the Capital-Journal

There’s not much better measuring stick in the area than the team just up the road. Defending 4A state champion Wamego comes to Rossville on Monday, a match that was postponed by weather a week earlier. Steamrolling toward a repeat, the Indians will test Rossville’s readiness for 3A playoff competition.

“I think we’re going to have a bulls eye on us in that one because we took two games from them last year when they ended up winning the 4A state title,” Rossville coach John Nitsch said. “I think (Wamego has) had this game circled for a long time.

"It will still count for our overall record that determines seeding for regionals, so it’s important from that standpoint.

“It’s really huge for our girls because it’s a bigger school we play in other sports besides just softball. Our girls want to make up for losing to them in basketball this year. They were ahead at halftime and let it get away.

"So it’s turned into a little bit of a rivalry.”

The Bulldawgs will have to grind through a busy week with a lot on the line. They will face Rock Creek on Tuesday. That should determine the Mid-East league crown.

If the Bulldawgs want bragging rights against Wamego, they will be out for revenge against Rock Creek. The Mustangs, who have moved up to 4A this year, foiled Rossville’s drive for a 3A state bid last year.

Heidi Nitsch Record Day

From the Cowley Courier Traveler, 3/21/18

Cowley College sophomore shortstop Heidi Nitsch had a record-setting day at the plate Friday against Kansas City before most of the players had an at-bat.
Nitsch homered in her first three at-bats in the first game of a Jayhawk East doubleheader, including a three-run shot and a grand slam in the bottom of the second inning of Cowley’s 21-3 rout of the Lady Blue Devils at Lady Tigers Field.
The Lady Tigers swept the twinbill, taking the nightcap 10-2.
The No. 3 batter in the lineup, Nitsch stepped to the plate with two out in the bottom of the first inning and lofted a solo home run to spark a five-run, two-out rally for put the Lady Tigers (14-11, 5-1 Jayhawk East).
That was just a prelude of things to come.
Nitsch followed a single to Brianna Fuchs and a walk to LaTaylah Perez with a three-run blast with nobody out in the bottom of the second.
The Lady Tigers sent 19 batters to the plate in the inning, and 14 of them scored.
Nitsch was far from finished, smacking a grand slam with one out in the frame.

The two home runs and seven RBI tied Cowley records for one inning.

Murray To Play At Cowley CCC

Sammie is pictured seated between her parents, Shane and Tina Murray, and with her brother Tyler.

Rossville High School senior Sammie Murray signed a National Letter of Intent to continue her softball career at Cowley County Community College.  Murray follows former Lady Dawg Heidi Nitsch, who helped lead Cowley to the NJCAA World Series this spring.  Murray, a mainstay in the Rossville lineup since transferring to RHS for her junior year, seamlessly shifted to left field this spring after playing third base as a junior.  The move in the field did not affect her hitting, as she posted career highs in batting average (.377), on base percentage (.429) and slugging percentage (.623).  Murray also pitched during her career, posting six wins as a junior.  Sammie’s versatility in the field and overall athleticism will be extremely helpful as she battles for playing time at Cowley this fall.

mother Tracy Nitsch, and father John “Dink” Nitsch.
Head RHS Softball Coach Curt Brecheisen is pictured standing.

Rossville High School Senior Heidi Nitsch has signed a National Letter Of Intent to play softball at Cowley County Community College in Arkansas City, Kansas. Cowley is a program that is usually in the top end of the very competitive Jayhawk JuCo conference. Entering her senior season at Rossville High, Heidi was a 2 time first team All Mid East League selection, as well as a 2 time Kansas Softball Coaches Association 3A All- State selection. She has also been a multiple time Sparkler All Star selection for her summer team, Kansas Heatwave.
