Brett Cowdin Memorial Night

RATTLERS' ANNOUNCE COACH COWDIN MEMORIAL CEREMONY
ROSSVILLE - The Rossville Rattlers Summer Collegiate Baseball team will host a Brett Cowdin Memorial Night on Saturday June 14, 2014 at 7:00 PM.

The Rattlers will be taking on league rival, the Baldwin City Blues. The organization will be retiring Brett's number 14 in a pre-game ceremony and are welcoming all former players, fans, friends and colleagues of Brett Cowdin.

Brett Cowdin, founder of the Rossville Rattlers and Topeka Golden Giants, passed away unexpectedly November 13, 2013. Coach Cowdin also served as a baseball and football coach for numerous Topeka and Rossville high school teams during his career. He was coaching with Washburn Rural High School as well as the Rattlers at the time of his passing.

"We want to fill Joe Campbell Memorial Stadium on June 14th to honor a great coach, mentor, and friend. We encourage everyone whose lives were touched by Brett, to come out Saturday night and join in on a memorable night," said Rattlers General Manager David Streeter.

Admission to all Rattlers' games are free - following Coach Cowdin's founding philosophy of providing free events for people of all ages to enjoy. The Rattlers will have BBQ available for purchase, along with commemorative t-shirts to benefit the Rossville Rattlers mission of helping players reach their collegiate and professional goals.

RHS Curriculum Completers

Rossville Jr./Sr. High School had four seniors this year who completed the required curriculum as set forth by the Kansas Board of Regents and earned the designation of State of Kansas Curriculum Completer. In order to earn this distinction, students must have completed 4 years of English, 4 years of Math, 3 years of Science, 3 years of Social Studies, and 2 years of Foreign Language. The students who met these criteria are Sydney Marney, Samantha Thompson, Therese VanderPutten, and Davis Warton
All Curriculum Completers are then eligible to be considered for an additional award. The Kansas Board of Regents on behalf of the Kansas Legislature ranks these Curriculum Completers based on their GPA and ACT scores. Samantha Thompson and Davis Warton were designated as 2014 Kansas State Scholars.
In addition to this award, the Kansas Dept. of Education and the Board of Regents honor students for exceptional academic performance based on their ACT. Davis Warton received a score of 34 on the ACT assessment and has been designated as a Kansas ACT Scholar.

Police Chase Through Rossville

From CJOnline:
ST. MARYS -- A man and a woman were arrested Wednesday after a vehicle chase that began just west of St. Marys, Pottawatomie County Sheriff Greg Riat said in a news release Thursday.
Riat indicated Ashley L. Gillispie, 28, and Jason Lee Gillispie, 30, both of Higbee, Mo., were being held in the Pottawatomie County Jail at Westmoreland.
Riat gave this account:
A Pottawatomie County Sheriff’s deputy at about 4 p.m. Wednesday stopped a white pickup truck with a freezer in the back on the Oregon Trail Road, about three miles west of St. Marys.
The deputy learned from a dispatcher that at least one of the truck’s two occupants was wanted on an arrest warrant out of Missouri.
Meanwhile, the two people fled in the vehicle and drove east toward St. Marys.
The Pottawatomie County Sheriff’s Office, St. Marys Police Department, Kansas Highway Patrol, Rossville Police Department and Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office took part in the ensuing chase, using stop stick devices on several occasions to deflate the pickup’s tires.
The pickup went east to Silver Lake, where it went off the end of the road at the T-intersection of Railroad Street and Rice Road.
Both occupants fled on foot but were quickly taken into custody.
Both were arrested on unspecified, outstanding Missouri warrants, and in connection with possessing illegal drugs.
Ashley Gillispie also was arrested in connection with fleeing to elude and possession of drug paraphernalia, while Jason Gillispie was also arrested in connection with obstructing the legal process or official duty.
